Exit Noise, Enter . . . ?

By Jack Schimmelman
We travel the world. We arrive in place. As the cacophony of ambition dies with the last vestiges of Hurricane Sandy we stand with a man who saved capitalism. Like Roosevelt before him, President Obama was reelected as our economy slowly stood on its knees wondering which way the wind blew. It is a gift of our fatuous media that we collectively did not know how close our world culture teetered on the brink of oblivion. Silly legislators stood in long lines aching to be seen on large flat screens, their flush heads emitting heated shadows enunciating gobblygook on either side of the aisle. Yes, we were blissfully unconscious, asleep, dreaming of tearing down the other side. But President Obama was elected to work for us. And work he did. He gathered around him co-conspirators in the banking crisis. Only then could he know how the inside looked. His gaze revealed a carcass that had once housed peoples equities; peoples dreams. No longer would their children go to college. No more would citizens fortunate few graduate from universities with living wages awaiting them. So he did what he had to do. He saved unworthy banks. He saved worthy industries. Automobiles once again were being manufactured in our country. Southern states with their right-to-work laws profited vastly from international automakers setting up shop in their states. The rust belt no longer rusty breathed with the clang of metal meeting metal. GM, Chrysler and Ford (which did not take a bailout) encountered rarified atmospheres. And so, the President is reelected to try to do for the rest of us what he has done for the auto industry. One would think as the capitol dome safely floats back to its foundation after nearly flying off into space from all of the hot air that had filled its calculating chambers for four years that the truth would be purified in the senses of all who have been handed the baton by constituents of this beautiful land. But no. Before we could quietly contemplate the implications of Tuesdays birth, the harsh hatred of progress swims upstream once again. Echoes dressed in ghostly digital images exclaim that the election is a fraud. This isnt possible! Yes, it is. As I write these syllables, I assure you that this President will go on to become one of our greatest. After denial has fled our shared amnesia, history will once again see that it was this tall, thin young man who stood between us and disaster and had the courage to do what was

necessary not only to prevent our final descent, but to begin our recovery to a more humane, peaceful and prosperous culture. He risked everything in order that more of us be covered with health insurance and mandated that we take responsibility. A mandate that originated with the Heritage Foundation and before that with Bismarck in Germany when they mandated health insurance for all of its citizens in the late 19th century. Even his own advisors urged the President to delay gambling all of his political capital on healthcare reform. If the Republicans want to avoid receding into the twilight of antiquity, they must start to cooperate with the President. Let Grover Norquist walk the reverberation chambers of Fox News begging for new autographs on his treasonous rolls of papers asking for oaths to principles that supersede the constitution. Good women and men will finally ascend to fulfill their promise and our journey will arrive at fates eternal home our hearts. Yes, it is our heart, our soul for which we voted. We gather to witness renaissance. This wont be easy.
