MR0203595 (34 #3444) 53.00 ONeill, Barrett Elementary differential geometry. Academic Press, New York-London 1966 viii+411 pp. This book on elementary differential geometry can be highly recommended. Its emphasis is on the geometric content of the subjects treated, whereas it takes great pains to be formal, precise and up-to-date in terminology. The details are fully exposed, and there is no leaving to the reader as is often found in books on differential geometry because of the inherent difculty of the subject. Therefore, the book should also be an excellent help for those who want to learn the subject from the text only. Contents: (I) Calculus on euclidean space; (II) Frame elds (curves in space); (III) Euclidean geometry (rigid motions in space, as they affect curves and surfaces); (IV) Calculus on a surface (2-dimensional differentiable manifolds); (V) Shape operators (embedded surfaces in E 3 ; local theory); (VI) Geometry of surfaces in E 3 (also global aspects); (VII) Riemannian geometry (intrinsic theory of surfaces with Riemannian metric).
