C. PRESENTATIONS

1. Asset Building

Carly Hoogedeen gave a presentation on Asset Building. She reported that she is
currently working with communities in Surrey, the Township of Langley and the Delta
Police Department.

She explained that the US-based Search Institute has identified the 40
Developmental Assets as important qualities, values, experiences, and
characteristics of children and youth that will enable them to become healthy and
successful adults. This positive child and youth development philosophy is gaining
great momentum throughout North America, with the goal of diminishing the
negative stigmatization of young people, and working towards viewing and treating
young people as resources in creating healthier and more engaged communities.

The Fraser Region Community Justice Initiative Association will contribute $1,000
towards any asset focused event or project that is youth driven and is of benefit to
the youth or the community.

Moved by E. Rowell,
Seconded by G. DeVynck,
That all the members of the Youth Advisory Committee be involved in the planning
of this project, and this topic be tabled and discussed further at the
February 25, 2009 meeting.
