URBAN DESIGN AND

COMMUNITY
ARCHITECTURE

BY AR.ANGELA GABRIELLE LORENO

PLAN 2-FUNDAMENTALS OF URBAN DESIGN AND COMMUNITY ARCHITECTURE colegio de san juan letran-calamba

Community Architecture can be simply defined as, “architecture carried

outwith the active participation of the end-users”.(Wates, Handbook 184)
PLAN 2-FUNDAMENTALS OF URBAN DESIGN AND COMMUNITY ARCHITECTURE colegio de san juan letran-calamba

Community Planning starts with understanding the civic

framework of a place — the agencies, organizations,
institutions, and residents that shape places. It entails
meaningful engagement to learn how places are valued
and to identify expectations, hopes, and concerns.

Urban Design involves understanding, organizing, and shaping relationships

between buildings, streets, open spaces, landscape elements, and natural
features.
PLAN 2-FUNDAMENTALS OF URBAN DESIGN AND COMMUNITY ARCHITECTURE colegio de san juan letran-calamba

Urban design is interdisciplinary; we work with architects, engineers,

economists, and other technical and creative professionals to uncover new
paths and possibilities. We create clear, compelling visuals to communicate
observations, ideas, and concepts, and to generate excitement about the
future.

Social factors include reference

groups, family, role and status in
society, time and available
resources.

Sociocultural perspective refers to a

point of view that is built upon the
idea that society and culture are
major factors influencing personal
development.
PLAN 2-FUNDAMENTALS OF URBAN DESIGN AND COMMUNITY ARCHITECTURE colegio de san juan letran-calamba

There are many sociocultural

factors referring to man; some
examples are religion, attitudes,
economic status, class, language,
politics and law. These factors can
affect quality of life, business and
health, but as future architects we
will be focusing to what planning
and designing architecturally a
community should be.

3.2.1 Pros:

• Sufficient Data for Analysis, you will be able to

gather great information that would help support
during the analyzing phase.

• Adaptation, so for that the community will be

able to consider the development from the other
neighbors and they will not have the feeling of
being alienated.

• Distinguish, any area or community will be

noticed according to ambiance, people,
architectural character, and etc.

3.2.2. Cons:

• Ideal/ Practical aspect because of

modernity, as the generation goes by, the
activities of man becomes more realistic,
ideal or practical.

The community’s culture can be used as a source of

information for the planning, design, and development of
projects that would connect to the user’s characters and
tradition. Research findings show that culture-oriented product
have meaningful content that reflect the people’s lifestyle as
well as provide them with symbolic personal, cultural and
social values that helps facilitate product acceptance. (Richie
