Presentation Title
Naturopathic clinical care for men with localized prostate cancer: A caseseries
Description
Dr. Yarnell will present a series of unselected cases from his clinical practice illustrating the
effects of total naturopathic clinical care to help men with localized prostate cancer.
Abstract
Learning objective: To review naturopathic treatment of localized prostate cancer patients.
Outline: A series of patients with localized prostate cancer will be described (in terms of
baseline characteristics at presentation), followed by discussion of the treatment protocols utilized
and which elements were common vs. distinct between patients, and to review the outcomes in
terms of serum tests, bioimpedence analysis results, changes in DRE, and (in some cases) color
Doppler transrectal ultrasound of the prostate (cdTRUS) imaging. Various pharmaceuticals
related to the care of prostate cancer patients will be mentioned.
Target audience: Clinicians who work with prostate cancer patients; students looking to
work with same; naturopathic clinical researchers.
Objective: To present preliminary evidence that naturopathic treatment for patients with
localized prostate cancer is safe and effective.
Method: Unselected caseseries
Results: Most patients with localized prostate cancer show stable PSA kinetics, stable
PAP levels, improvement in phase angle and body fat percentage, stable DREs (or improvement),
and improvement on cdTRUS (when available).
Discussion: These cases provide initial justification to investigate a naturopathic program
for localized prostate cancer patients at the Bastyr Integrative Oncology Cancer Clinic (BIORC),
compared to a matched group treated with conventional means at the Seattle Cancer Care
Alliance.
