    Background InSeptember2010,worldleadersgatheredinNewYorktoreaffirmtheircommitmenttotheMillennium DevelopmentGoals(MDGs)andevaluateprogress.Withthe2015targetdateonlyafewyearsawaythe campaignresultsarespreadunevenlyacrossthecontinents,withleastachievementinAfrica. Thegoalsaredeemedtobestillachievable,butgoodgovernanceisanecessitytoachievetheset objectives.Unfortunatelyintheprocessofpolicyformulationandimplementation,thereisastrikinglackof systematicengagementofelectedrepresentativesoftheaffectedpopulations.Africanparliamentarians facethedauntingtaskofprovidingoversightoflegislation,policiesanddevelopmentfundstowardsthe MDGswithoutaccesstoresearchonpolicyimpacts,informationonbudgetsallocationsandforeignaid flows.ThroughtheMDGProgramme,AWEPAaimsatcapacitatingparliamentarians,thereby strengtheningparliamentarydemocracyasameanstowardsAfricasachievementoftheMDGsover2011 2015. Objective TheoverallobjectiveoftheMDGProgrammeistocontributetotherealisationofdemocracy,poverty reductionandsustainabledevelopmentinAfricathroughsupportingthecapacitydevelopmentofregional AfricanParliamentsandthroughpromotingabetterunderstandingamongEuropeanparliamentariansofthe challengesforachievingtheMDGsinAfrica.
