Overview MetroPort Auckland is a proven concept which has gained wide acceptance in the Auckland market, since its inception in June 1999. MetroPort Auckland is New Zealand s only truly integrated intermodal cargo gateway that creates supply chain efficiencies. The driver behind the seamless delivery from Port of Tauranga to the inland destination in Auckland, is the IT system SPARCS which allows the Tauranga Container Terminal (TCT) to plan and control the movement of import containers, off vessels and onto trains, destined for MetroPort Auckland. Annual throughput has increased from 32,000 TEU in the first year to 168,000 TEU year ending June 2008. KiwiRail provide the rail connection between MetroPort Auckland and the Tauranga Container Terminal. The Port of Tauranga s current arrangements with KiwiRail run through to May 2013 with preferential rights of renewal beyond that. MetroPort Auckland is a Customs bonded area and fully licensed Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry site.

MetroPort Accessibility Location is the key to MetroPort Auckland s success. It is well served by road; bordered by the region s two main motorways plus several other major arterial routes. Its proximity to Auckland s main industrial, warehousing and distribution areas are a great advantage, with shorter transit times to end destinations, improving the overall supply chain efficiency.

MetroPort Accessibility continued As the MetroPort operation is intermodally focused, we have recognised that with rising fuel costs, road carriers are seeking all possible efficiencies in order to kept costs to importers to a minimum. We have worked very hard to ensure truck turnaround times at MetroPort have been the lowest in the Auckland market and they have been for some years now. Average turn time for 12 months to August 2010 is 15.6 minutes.

Vehicle Booking System (VBS) MetroPort is not planning to introduce a VBS, instead importers can enjoy the freedom of calling any time of the day or night to uplift their cargo to meet their supply chain requirements. Imports through MetroPort can actually arrive into store quicker than via other local ports, due to the seamlessly integrated intermodal nature of the operation: Efficient vessel berthing and high crane productivity for discharge Priority train planning by the customer with ShuttleSelect Immediate truck access and faster turnaround times at MetroPort Direct access to multiple state highway routes MetroPort is located in the heart of Auckland s industrial belt meaning shorter transit times If you take an into store approach to imported goods, there is only one supply chain solution that ticks all the boxes for customer focus, speed and efficiency, MetroPort Auckland.

Key Infrastructure Due to growing demand, in 2005 over $3 million was spent to substantially increase paved area and ground slots and the rail apron was increased to provide for longer trains. Significant spare capacity has been built in to allow for future growth. Specifications are as follows: Ground Slots Rail Siding Siding length Reefer Points Total Area Occupied Import Free Time MetroPort Auckland was the first Terminal in New Zealand to offer extended free time. Importers enjoy five free days (including day of arrival) and the lowest demurrage rates in the region. Any days a container spends dwelling in Tauranga are not counted in the free time allowance at MetroPort Auckland; a definite advantage for importers. 1450 Two exclusive sidings 780 metres which can accommodate trains up to 110 TEU 60 3.5 hectares

Train Scheduling & Capacity The current schedule is as follows: Three trains per day of 106 TEU each, supplemented by trains of 70 TEU. Plans are in place to achieve future train sizes of 120 TEU with the purchase of new locomotives and rolling stock, subject to demand. Rail capacity is supplemented by road, as necessary. Access to Empty Container Depots (CYs) MetroBox Auckland is a joint venture between Toll NZ and Port of Tauranga, servicing shipping line s requirements for empty containers. Specialised Container Services have the management contract for MetroBox Auckland and bring a high level of expertise and experience to the operation. Current services consist of storage, repairs, washing, pretripping, and Fonterra upgrading. The operation covers an area of two hectares and has storage capacity for 6,000 TEU. MetroBox Auckland is situated on the KiwiRail Southdown site, beside MetroPort Auckland and adjacent to the KiwiRail network. Extended operating hours allow flexibility not enjoyed at other Auckland depots. Synergies with MetroPort Auckland and KiwiRail allow for easier repositioning of empty containers, especially during peak times such as the dairy season.

Information Technology ShuttleSelect ShuttleSelect is MetroPort Auckland s interactive web-based delivery request tool. Customers (via a secure logon) can select the desired delivery window in which they require their containers to arrive at MetroPort Auckland. The delivery period ranges from first available (priority) in order to expedite delivery of urgent cargo, or the option to delay delivery for up to five days, useful for when warehouses cannot accept the full shipment. This ground-breaking tool allows the import market to tell us when they require their cargo, resulting in a co-coordinated and efficient supply chain. ShuttleSelect also has various auto track and alert functions that keep customers fully informed. MetroPort Auckland Interface MetroPort Auckland is connected to the Tauranga Container Terminal s IT systems via a high-speed Wide Area Network connection. This means users in MetroPort Auckland have access to SPARCS and EXPRESS in the same way as an operator in Tauranga. The Port of Tauranga was the first in the world to operate SPARCS and EXPRESS in a multi-terminal, intermodal configuration. Navis have now incorporated the Port's multiterminal concept into their software for use worldwide. This multi-terminal configuration is what gives boarder control agencies confidence in our ability to maintain supply chain integrity, thus allowing containers to move from Tauranga Terminal to MetroPort Auckland without specific Customs or Agriculture clearance. Full clearance is only required when uplifting imports from MetroPort Auckland.
