Guide
CAMCORDERS
Camcorders do more than just play back video on a TV. You
can edit your videos on a computer, e-mail them, or upload
video clips to such sites as Facebook or YouTube. Some
camcorders even have 3D capability, GPS, and built-in projectors
Shopping tip
Electronic view-
finders can help
you shoot video
in bright light
situations.
Scan this or see how, page 11
What to look for
An LCD with very good
quality, since most models
don't include a viewfinder
and you'll need to compose
on the display
Long battery life, since
battery life varies greatly.
Also, look for models that
can be charged via a com-
puter's USB port
Although image quality
is the most important factor
in our tests, be sure to check
for audio quality, which
varies greatly
What to skip
Digital zoom, since this
type of zoom degrades im-
age quality
What you'll pay
For full-sized HD camcord-
ers, you'll spend $300 to
$1,500. For pocket camcord-
ers, you'll spend $75 to $250.

Guide to the R atings
Overall score is based mainl y on image qual ity, the p resence of useful features, battery l ife, and
weight. Megapixels is the sensor's p ixel count, in mil l ions. Weight (oz.) is with battery and memory
card. Image quality combines several tests, incl uding regul arp hotos, l ow-l ight p hotos, and fl ash
p hotos as wel l as resol ution, macro, veil ing gl are, vignetting, and col orand geometric distortion
tests. Flash photos tests the qual ity of the buil t-in fl ash's outp ut and evenness of il l umination.
Video quality mostl y refl ects footage shot in regul arand low l ight, with audio qual ity and macro
(cl ose-up ) cap abil ity al so considered. Ease of use is oureval uation of the camera's control s,
manual , resp onse time, and focusing. LCD quality is a judgment of images viewed undervarious
conditions. Viewfinder is oureval uation of its qual ity, incl uding accuracy in disp l aying the framing
of the image that wil l be recorded. Test lens is the kit l ens tested. To cal cul ate its 35-mm-equival ent
focal range, mul tip l y the minimum and maximum shown, resp ectivel y, by the magnification factor,
if shown (in p arentheses). Price is ap p roximate retail .

Guide to the Ratings
Overall score is based mainly on mage quality, ease of use, and versatility, plus LCD, flash,
and video quality. Megapixels is the number of pixels, in millions, on the sensor. Weight (oz.)
is with battery, memory card, and strap. Image guality combines several tests, including regular
photos, low-light photos, and flash photos as well as color tests, among others. Flash photos
tests the guality of the built-in flash's light outp'ut and evenness of illumination. Video guality
mostly reflects footage shot in regular and low light, with audio quality and macro (close-up)
capability also considered. Ease of use is our evaluation of the camera's controls, manual,
response time, and focusing. LCD quality is a judgment of images viewed under various lighting
conditions. For widest angle (mm), the lower the number, the broader the vista the camera
can capture. Battery life (shots) is as the manufacturer states. Price is approximate retail.

SLRs
Most cameras are very reliable, and few
differences exist among brands. That's what
we found when we asked more than 146,000
readers who bought a digital camera between
2007 and 2011 about their experiences. The
graph shows the percentage of, models for
each brand that were repaired or had a serious
problem. Differences of fewer than 3 points
aren't meaningful, and we've adjusted the
data to eliminate differences linked solely to
the age of the camera. We lacked sufficient
data to include Pentax and Olympus SLR cam-
eras, but they do not appear to have reliability
problems. Models within a brand can vary, and
design or manufacture changes might affect
future reliability. Still, choosing a brand with
a good repair history can improve your odds
of getting a reliable model.

Guide
PRINTERS, ALL-IN-ONE
if ail you do is print, you can save money and space by
purchasing a dedicated printer. But if you want to copy or
scan, or even fax, it's worth investigating an all-in-one.
What to iook for
If you don't need to print in
color or scan color photos, an
all-in-one laser for superior
quality, faster print speed,
and a lower cost per page
An all-in-one inkjet, if you
want color printing and a
model that excels at printing
your photos
A built-in duplexer to print
on both sides of the page
What to skip
High ink- or toner-cartridge
costs, which can make a
bargain-priced printer a bad
deal in the long run
An inkjet with a single color
cartridge, because separate
color cartridges may be more
economical, depending on
your photos
What you'ii pay
All-in-ones are actually getting
less expensive and more ver-
satile. Inkjets cost $60 and up.
