TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

Have your say on important plans affecting Tarporley this January

WE are expecting there to be two, if not three, important consultation events in the village during January. We would urge everyone to look out for them and either to go along to have your say or to write in. Watch out for notices on the village notice board by the entrance to St Helens Church, and flyers delivered through your door. One of the events will be about the development of the Brook Farm site and the land opposite for outdoor sports facilities for the village. The other will be about the creation of a village square, adjacent to High Street, by the northern entrance to St Helens churchyard and the access road to the Done Room. We understand that the planning application for the land off High Street, known as the Daffodil Field, is to be re-submitted to the Council soon. The Parish Council objected to the first application, and we understand in this second application, the developers have tried to address some of the objections. Anyone wishing to comment on this second application must write in, even if they wrote in about the first one. This is considered as a new application and comments are not carried forward. Broadband Moves to roll-out superfast broadband to homes and businesses in Cheshire are a step closer with the announcement, at the end of November, of money from the EU. To make sure that Tarporley doesnt miss out on this development, we need to show there is a demand for superfast broadband locally. So please register with Connecting Cheshire at www. connectingcheshire.org.uk. It takes just a matter of minutes. Thanks. Lights We would like to thank everyone for attending the Christmas Lights event under the chestnut tree at the end of November. The children from the Primary School sang so well and Father Christmas was very popular. Thanks too to the many people and businesses who made the event such a success, and to those who helped decorate High Street with its many Christmas trees and lights. And finally, may we on the Parish Council wish you a very prosperous and successful 2013. P.S. We have just heard that a decision about the appeal by Fox Strategic Land and Property Ltd regarding their planning application for 100 houses on the land off Nantwich Road has been delayed until late January 2013. The original decision date was on or before December 19th 2012. 10 To advertise call 01244 350398

Peter and Patrick complete coast-to-coast challenge

A CyCLIng duo have raised a staggering 32,000 for charity by riding across the United States of America. Peter Holland and Patrick Milroy cycled 3,150 miles from Los Angeles to Boston Massachusetts on their Wheels-4-Wheels adventure. Peter (65) a retired businessman from Tarporley, and Frodsham gP Patrick successfully crossed the mountains and deserts of the US in 32 days - almost 100 miles a day every day. That was some target, even for the fit and healthy! You can read the story of their journey on the website www.wheels-4-wheels.com By doing so they have raised money to provide powered wheelchairs for disabled children in our area. Thanks to the generosity of their friends and communities the team have raised a staggering 31,000 to help local children and the charity Whizz Kidz is facilitating a project to distribute this by providing wheelchairs and other mobility aids to local children and young people. More life savers in Tattenhall

A SUCCESSFUL programme of Heartstart training to the general public has been running in Tattenhall over the last few months resulting in 60 people so far being trained in this potentially life saving skill The initiative is a community collaboration between The Studio in Tattenhall and the Tattenhall First Responders where a 3 hour workshop is run every month training a maximum of 12 people at a time to ensure that everyone is able to participate in the exercises and receive individual feedback. The Heartstart scheme has been developed by the Britsih Heart Foundation to provide free Emergency Life Support (ELS) training in the community and schools. The scheme is aimed at the public and anyone from the age of ten upwards can attend and learn the complete range of ELS skills. To date 2.6 million people have been trained through Heartstart. The Heartstart programme includes skills such as: l assessing an unconscious patient l performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) l dealing with choking l dealing with serious bleeding l helping someone who may be having a heart attack. Knowing what to do when someone has a cardiac arrest is important. If you can 28 To advertise call 01244 350398 do CPR you can buy the time needed for professional help to arrive and save the life of your loved one. Being able to do CPR more than doubles their chance of survival. The Heartstart course is designed to follow the current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines. Jill Raine, from The Studio, and Rob Selby, from the Tattenhall First Responders, have been overwhelmed by the response to the initiative as all the courses so far have been fully booked as are all the courses up until May 2013. Jill said: The feedback from participants on the training has been universally positive and its encouraging to see so many people wanting to learn this essential skill. We would like to see this initiative spread to more local communities in Cheshire. Although the training is provided free of charge, any donations to Tattenhall First Responders are gratefully received and used to support the continuing work of this valuable community asset. Please contact Jill on 01829 771895 if you would like to book on the next available course or Rob Selby on 07792 885260 if you are a member of a First Responders group and would like to receive training on how to deliver the course.

Tarvin men complete peak challenge only just!

NINE men from Tarvin have completed the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Mount Snowdon in Wales all within 24 hours. The seven climbers and two drivers successfully completed the challenge in 23 hours 50 minutes, so with 10 minutes to spare, but ultimately achieved their goal. They were motivated to complete this in a bid to support the Tarporley War Memorial Hospital who have treated a number of relatives and friends - their continued commitment to care is highly commendable and all of the men taking part wanted to raise vital funds to help with the refurbishment of patient rooms. In support of their efforts they carried out a number of fundraising events and received sponsorship and donations from a number of local people and businesses from both Tarvin and Tarporley. They raised a total of 8342.84 which we was presented to Tarporley War Memorial Hospital last month. Fund raising co-ordinator Julie Leach said: The Tarvin Three Peaks Challenge team would like to give special thanks to all of the local businesses who provided prizes or sponsorship, and for all of the generous donations given by everyone, we are truly touched by the magnificent support we have received - This certainly motivated the climbers to successfully complete the challenge, and the money we have raised has surpassed all of our expectations. Police update from Kelsall and Tarvin l Police have been stop checking young people to deter them from getting on the roof of Kelsall Primary School. l Motorists continue to park on the double yellows outside the Co-op store, hair salon and the Greedy Pig in Kelsall. Police are warning that they will dish out 30 fines to people causing an obstruction rather than use the car park opposite. l Youths were seen throwing eggs at a property on Pitts Close, Tarvin. l Police received complaints from Tarvin residents of door to door salesmen selling of household cleaning products.

Humbug, humbug thought Scrooge, as another year drew to a close. The world was clearly going quite mad, the ghost of Christmas past (a Mr Mervyn King) had gobbled up all those government bonds using something called quantitative easing and now Scrooge was getting next to no interest on his coffers. This was not a happy state of affairs. The spirit of Christmas present, George Osborne wanted to take more and more of Scrooges precious funds in taxes, the very thought turning his already cold heart to ice. External heat and cold had little influence on scrooge, no warmth could warm and no wintry weather chill him, but even he couldnt fail to feel the effects of inflation

Low interest rates, high inflation and even higher taxes weighed down heavily on scrooge, as of course they do with us all. Now Scrooge had a nephew, who had visited that very day, come said the nephew gaily, what right have you to be dismal, what reason have you to be morose, youre rich enough. Rich enough, raged Scrooge, hed recently been visited by the ghost of Christmas future, and what he saw filled him with fear. Words and phrases like, workplace pension, capital gains tax and inheritance tax, swam before him, he had looked into the future and seen the cost of care swallowing up his fortune, of all the Spectres he had

Bunbury war hero honoured

EDDISBURY MP Stephen OBrien has honoured a war hero from Bunbury. Mr OBrien made a presentation of a Royal British Legion County Certificate of Merit to 92-year-old John Walker. John was born in 1920 and served with The Durham Light Infantry 1939 to 1946 in 8th Army and was wounded three times. Following the end of the Second World War Mr Walker took a job as a head gardener in Bunbury where he has lived ever since, taking an active role in the Royal British Legion Bunbury Branch. Not only has he Chaired the Bunbury Branch he has Chaired the Service Committee, the Welfare Committee and been the Poppy organiser having been a regular poppy day collector since 1948. Car driver injured A car driver suffered spinal injuries following a collision with a lorry on the A51 Nantwich Road at Tarporley at the end of November. It is believed that the car flipped onto its roof leaving the driver trapped inside. Unwanted bikes for Africa THIS January, the Rotary Club of Tarporley is supporting the campaign to collect unwanted bikes for shipment to Africa. They are doing this in association with the Rotary-supported charity Jole Rider (http://jolerider.org) and their Bikes4Africa campaign to make the journey to education possible for thousands of children. health & beauty

with Angela Bartlett Q. I often use face wipes to cleanse my skin. Is this ok or should I use a cleanser? A. Apart from occasional use, I never advocate the use of face wipes. Firstly, many of them contain harsh ingredients such as alcohol which is not a good ingredient for your skin. Secondly, wipes are often used too aggressively on the skin and the regular rough treatment can adversely affect the elastin fibres leading to premature skin sagging. Finally, it is rare that a wipe will fully cleanse your skin and any skin therapist will tell you that a thorough cleansing ritual is the corner stone to good skin care. If your skin is not thoroughly cleansed any products you apply afterwards will be less effective which is a waste of money. For my top tips on the perfect cleansing routine visit the January newsletter page of our website www.angelabartlett.co.uk Q. Can facial exercises prevent skin ageing? A.Facial exercises aim to tone muscles, but skin ageing is far more complex than loss of muscle tone. Factors such as the loosening of the facial ligaments that holds the muscles in place, movement of fat pads, loss of skin elasticity etc. all have a part to play in the ageing face. There is no research to suggest that facial exercises work and if you think about it logically the reason why botulinum toxin (botox) erases wrinkles is because it reduces muscle movement so by increasing muscle/facial movement with facial exercises you are likely to increase wrinkling. Look in the mirror and notice that the parts of your face which are the most wrinkled its the areas of your face you stretch and crinkle the most! By all means tone your body muscles to improve your figure. This month the new Tarporley Business 121 training are offering our clients a free fitness assessment when you book any Body Treatment with us in January. 46 To advertise call 01244 350398

WHEN IS A SALE NOT A SALE?

MOST OF THE TIME IN THE CARPET TRADE!!

Beware of shops offering unbelievable deals with large discounts off recommended retail prices.
There is no RRP. As a retailer we decide what price to sell a product for. If a shop can offer you massive discounts then they have probably just put a massive mark up on the item to start with. Remember, nothing in life is free!! Shops offering free fitting or free underlay probably have it worked into the cost of the carpet. We have never known any fitters who work for free and have never been given underlay free, so if shops can offer these things for free then they are either making a loss or have added it into the price of the carpet!! Our family business has grown from strength to strength due to your recommendations! We strongly believe in genuine competitive prices and Excellent service whether you are spending 100 or 10,000. We have 5 teams of dedicated experienced fitters!! We are officially the busiest small independent carpet shop in Chester and throughout the North West!

WE HAVE NEVER HAD A SALE AND NEVER WILL!!

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIxTH FORM COLLEGE

Thank you for your support Miss Vicky Cheshire Year 11 Achievement Leader / Camp Uganda 2013 Expedition Leader Tarporley High School & Sixth Form College For more information please contact the school: Email: admin@tarporley-high.cheshire.sch.uk Telephone: 01829 732558

Finally, If you would like any additional information about this expedition, or if you are in a position to assist the students with their fundraising in any way, then please do get in touch. All of the money raised in school will go directly to these two worthwhile causes.

Students on an African mission to save the rhino

THIS summer, a small group of students from Tarporley High School & Sixth Form College will embark on a trip of a lifetime to Eastern Africa. Four students from year 11 and 13, will form part of a composite crew, consisting of students from various different schools across the UK. They will travel to Uganda to participate in a four week expedition organised by Camps International. During the visit they will undertake two vital projects. For the first part of the trip, they will be based at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary which is home to one of the Worlds most endangered species, the White Rhino. The students will help the rangers in the day to day care and management of the 12 rhinos currently based Theatre trip to Manchester A nUMBER of KS4 and KS5 students went to the Royal Exchange, Manchester to see Tennessee Williamss Orpheus. For many, staff included, it was their first trip to this unique performing space, situated within the old Cotton Exchange. Imogen Stubbss spellbinding portrayal of a woman infused with bitterness, but whose passions are reignited by the arrival of a stranger in a snakeskin jacket, kept the audience captivated. 52 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.tarporleytalk.com at the sanctuary. They will also work within the local community to educate and support local people in the careful management of their livestock and the importance of local wildlife within their community. From Ziwa, the students will travel east to Budadiri, a small village based at the foot of Mount Elgon. During their stay there, they will work collaboratively with local residents to re-build a school for local children. As a country which forms part of Eastern Africa, Uganda is renowned for its excellent education system. Sadly however, the facilities in most schools do not always reflect this. The group will work against the clock to build a clean, safe and well equipped school suitable for the local population and not only will they build the school, they will also teach in it too! The students have already begun their fundraising campaign and they will continue to undertake fundraising activities both within the school and as part of the local community. Their most recent fundraising idea is staff recipe book. Fine Dining, is a collection of favourite recipes submitted by the staff at Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College. Fine Dining is available to view or purchase from the Schools Main Reception / Library Reception. Recipe books are priced at 3.50 each or 3 for 10.

Roseanne is queen of the jungle

FORMER Tarporley girl Roseanne Capper has been trekking through the jungle hoping to raise 2,000 for charity Rosanne, who grew up in Springhill, had been working as a lawyer in London for six years when she decided that she wanted a six-month career break to do some volunteering in Central America. The 29-year-old came across a charity called Education for the Children Foundation (EFTC), which is a project based in Jocotenango, Guatemala, that gives over 500 children education, food, healthcare and shelter www.eftc.org.uk . Rosanne has been helping out at the school for over a month and has now been inspired to do a three day trek through the Guatemalan jungle, hoping to raise 2,000 for the charity. The school is called La Esperanza which means hope and 80% of the children live in the slums on the steep hillside of Vista Hermosa with families who cannot afford to send their children to school. Rosanne along with three other fundraisers, trekked for three days through dense tropical undergrowth, carrying their own kit and camping in the wild to reach the Mayan ruins of El Mirador and the largest Pyramid in the world, La Danta on 21st December for the end of the Mayan calendar. If you would like to sponsor her to help her reach her target and support the school, please go to http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ rosannecapper Above: Roseanne with one of the children that she helped to rehouse from a shack to a brick house. Look up....
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesnt require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing whats needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floor space in an average home. So shouldnt you be making the most of it? And thats where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And thats all it does. Its not a generic building company, and its not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. Its what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...Our average job is about

FOOTBALL TALK... TARPORLEY VICS FC

Vics end the year on a high

TARPORLEY Vics First and Reserve teams have both played to their full potential in the past months football matches and the results have all been positive. The First Team has played on two occasions and has won both games. The first match against Daten FC was a good away performance against the Leagues bottom side, and it is always pleasing to win comfortably away from The Flacca. The remaining match was a Crewe & District FA Cup quarter final tie against Winnington Avenue FC. The Vics controlled the match and convincingly won 5-1. They have now progressed to the semi finals which will be played in the New Year, with the opponents yet to be drawn. Reserves The Reserves stretched their winning run to four games with Sandbach United 3rds, Crewe FC Reserves and Duddon United all defeated in the period since the last report. The most pleasing results were against Crewe FC & Duddon United FC, who were despatched 7-2 and 1-0 respectively. Tarporley Vics Reserves are now climbing the League table although they currently trail Duddon by seven points; however they have three games in hand to further reduce the deficit.

Tarporley Vics Reserves Team Captain Adam nichols, who along with Steve Lloyd, Warren Hill, Mike Parker & Adam Walton supported Tarporley Round Table in decorating Christmas trees along Tarporley High Street

Peckforton is countys top hotel

PECKFORTON Castle has been crowned Hotel of the Year at the Annual Marketing Cheshire Awards. More than 370 guests attended the prestigious awards at the M&S Bank European Headquarters and enjoyed champagne before sitting down to an evening hosted by former Hollyoaks actress and presenter Terri Dwyer. This year the competition was particularly fierce in the Hotel of the Year category as it was the first time both the small hotel and large hotel categories had been merged together into one set of nominations. Chris Naylor, Managing Director of Peckforton Castle, said: Myself and the family are so proud to have won such a prestigious award, especially as the category for Hotel of the Year culminates so many great hotels within Cheshire. We hope to promote and make our region proud in the National awards and celebrate all things Cheshire! Peckforton Castle was commended for its very high standards of customer service, quality of locally sourced food and commitment to staff training. Peckforton will now be entered into the 2013 national Visit England Awards.

Councillors set the benchmark

JUBILEE benches have been set in place at Utkinton and Cotebrook. The benches were funded by donations from villagers and events across the parish. Parish council chairman Graham Stewart and Cllrs Ian Priestner, Maggie Stewart and Frank Tunney ably assisted by Ted Scott, all assembled and undertook the placement and backfilling the holes with a specialist mix that will ensure the bench stays in place. The Parish Council thanks all concerned for their donations and contributions to what we hope will become meeting points across both villages. GARDENING jOBS fOR jANUARy

January is often thought of as the colourless month of the year but there are some plants that flower and others that provide colour, shape and form. Hellebore orientalis will often flower in milder weather in January and their pink, white and deep velvety plum flowers lift the spirit in these short days. Cut off most of their large leaves and the flowers will be visible. Structural seed heads such as Sedums look beautiful when frosted so dont cut them down. Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) and winter flowering heathers (Erica) will also flower in January. Evergreen plants come into their own in winter and you may want to consider a large structural shrub for year round foliage and form. Try Fatsia japonica if you have a sheltered space which does not get the early morning frost. This plant has large glossy light green leaves that will give a dull corner continuous leaf colour. With groups of different coloured hellebores planted around the base it would look wonderful throughout the dark months. Garrya elliptica

GardeninG by Janet HeatH

is a shrub with evergreen leaves and silvery green catkins that look as though Christmas decorations have been hung on the branches. There are some tasks that can be done in January in preparation for spring. Dig over and level any ground you want to have ready for spring planting such as new borders or vegetable beds. Dont do this if the soil is very wet as it will cause compaction of the soil. Prune back overgrown Clematis montana, wisteria and ornamental vines whilst the leaves are off the plants. This will enable you to see the structure of the plants. Continue to prune other overgrown shrubs. Make sure that any dahlia tubers or gladioli corms lifted for overwintering, are kept dry and frost free. Cover more delicate plants with horticultural fleece in freezing weather to prevent losing them over winter. Weed the garden making sure that you get the roots out especially of plants such as dandelion and bittercress. The latter sets seed so fast that you need to get rid of it before it flowers.

THE speaker at our December meeting gave a talk entitled Chester Zoo and the last 30 years. Penny Rudd is the registrar at the zoo and she told us about the huge changes that have been made in the care of animals and their conservation during that time. It was good to hear that Chester Zoo is recognised as one of the top three in the world and is involved in 50 projects in five continents. With their aims to further Conservation, Education and Recreation we all felt that we should support the zoo as much as we could in the future. Final plans for the Xmas party were made and members were reminded of the New Year Lunch at The Millpool on 16th January. Did you spot him? He is on the bottom of page 40.
