Question W31: Note the denition of the rigid surface. Would the rigid surface behave differently if its reference node (901) had been dened at coordinates (30.0, 20.0)? No, in this simulation it would not make any difference. However, if the rigid body were used in a dynamics simulation and were free to move, the rigid body reference node would have to be placed at the center of mass. If the rigid body had an applied rotation, the reference node would have to be at the center of rotation.

Question W32: Answer:

Is the separation of the sheet from the rigid surface noted in the message le? (Hint: search for the word OPENING.) The message le prints out information about the changes in the contact boundary conditions at the slave nodes. The number of closures, the number of openings, and the nodes that are overclosed are printed out to provide information about the current state of contact in the simulation.

Question W33: Answer:

Why does the die penetrate the deformable sheet? How could the model be modied to prevent or minimize this effect? In a contact pair the slave nodes cannot penetrate the master surface, but the master surface can penetrate the slave surface. To prevent this result, rene the mesh that forms the slave surface. If the master surface were deformable, a second contact pair could be dened where the roles of the master and slave surface are reversed. This technique gives better resolution of the contact between the surface, but it increases the cost of the analysis and makes interpretation of the contact output variables difcult.
