The epigraph at the beginning of Amber Road is from a poem by Ernest Dowson, who also provided the title for Gone With the Wind. What do you think the author intended by drawing such a parallel? From the moment Joe lays eyes on Victoria he is infatuated. How does his reaction to her and his apparent ability to see what is under her skin affect the way she sees herself? More than one character asserts that the day Singapore surrendered was the day 'the sun set on the British Empire. Is this a fair observation? A leopard doesnt change its spots. Did the manner in which both Victoria and Joe dealt with, first, the coming of the war and then the peace prove or disprove this saying? Are any of the other characters evidence of the opposite view? The Japanese in World War 2 are often drawn as stereotypes cruel, devious and ultimately suicidal. Discuss the characters here that break that mould and what redeeming characteristics they present.
