Abstract
A
comparison
of
the
test
results
obtained
for
the
unaged
French
and
2024-T3
(bareand
hardanodized)
alloys
suggests
that the
resistance
of
all
materials
to
raindrop
erosion
is
identical.
Superiorperformance
of
the
hardanodized
Alloy
2024-T3
samplewas
not
observed
duringthe
erosiontesting.
Post-test
examinations
of
the hard
anodized
2024-T3
sample
indicate
that
the
performance
of
thecoating
was
limited
by
spallingof
the
coating
from
thesubstrate.
A
reviewof
the
literature
suggests
that
this
conditionis
due
to
abnormal
surfaceroughness
of
theanodiccoating.
This
condition,
which
can
be
minimized
with
the
application
of
silicone
waxes
(or
similar
surface treatments)
to
thecoatedsurfaces,
does
contribute
to
poor
chemical
and
impact
resistance.
No
pre-test
surfacecharacterizationswere performed
on
this material.
In
summary,
theresults
of
this program
suggest
that
Alloy
2024-T3
be considered
as
a
candidatereplacement
material
for
theFrench
alloy
that
iscurrently
being
used
on
the
outer
wing
slats
of
the
HU-25A
aircraft.
The
local
overheating(retempering)
of
the
material
during
anti-icing
periods
will
reduce
the
corrosion
and
erosion-relatedperformance
ofthe
alloy;
however,
thedegradation
will
be
no
worse than
currently
being
experienced
with
the
French
alloy. Additional
testing
of
thehardanodized
Alloy
2024-T3is
required
before
this
material
can
be recommended
over the
uncoated
material.
