Inquiry approach The core of inquiry approach is spontaneous and self explorations.

From an early age, children are naturally curious and inquisitive about the early age; children are naturally curious and inquisitive about everything in the immediate environment .they continue to wonder how things happen as they grow and gain satisfying experiences. The inquiry approach popularly called discovery approach emerged as teaching methodology aims to assist children in finding answers to their own questions, gathering data and other evidences formulating own conclusions. It is implemented through activities designed to make the learner go through a step-by-step procedure during inquiry. They discover concepts by themselves, employing such processes as analyzing, evaluating and synthesizing own observations. Ultimately they become independent inquirers, critical minded and highly motivated students. Developing competence The role of the teacher and other adults reacting with the children are the following: 1. Guidance on consistent use of science processes will enhance the skills and ensure their continued use in the lifelong quest for knowledge. 2. Plan lesson that would require active participation of all groups in the lesson investigations. They learn what they do. Generation of knowledge through involvement in systematic procedures become well-ingrained. More meaningful interactions and sharing of ideas follow. 3. The teachers questioning techniques must be suited to the thinking ability of the students. Why and how questions will develop their reasoning ability. Students will at the same time learn how to ask through provoking questions. Divergent questions that provoke reasoning is encouraged. 4. Allow flexibility in the students way of doing things they must be free to decide on hoe they could satisfy their own thirst for knowledge. In this way their creativity and resourcefulness will be expressed un hampered by traditional ways that often restrict their reactions 5. Higher order thinking skills such as critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving are developed through independent inquiries and first hand experiences. 6. The value of self managed learning styles is appreciated and internalized, guaranteeing lasting satisfaction, pride and confidence. 7. Social traits such as respects for opinions of others, tolerance and cooperation are valued by all. Recommended Activities 1. Assign a group to visit a natural pond nearby. Study anything that interests you. Upon their return, let them narrate freely, A. What question did they ask one another? B. Name interesting objects, organisms, and why and how they look. C. What do they like to explore next?

2. Write an essay on what they love to ask their parents and why? 3. Do their parents allow them to ask questions freely? How do they feel about it? 4. What is your reaction when you a. Listen to grand prize winner in singing contest? 5. Experiments to be performed in the laboratory. a. State the problem b. Ask the student to plan the procedure they will follow. c. Let them formulate own conclusion. 6. Perform a silent demonstration in front of the class. a. Observe the students why-did-it happen look registered in their faces. b. Then, allow them to ask all kinds of questions c. Call on the other observer to answer. 7. Survey the age, birthday and number of brothers and sisters of every member of the class. Do the following: a. Arrange them into group b. Present data in an organized way c. Formulate conclusions 8. Enumerate two happenings in your environment that you like to observe and gather information from. In the end, what did you do with the data you gathered? What did you learn from this activity. 9. Plan lesson that stress cause and effect relationships.

Teacher Role This is to remind teacher: 1. The changed role is that of a guide, facilitator and motivator, rather than an authority who determines and dictates how a lesson should be carried on through. 2. The conducive learning environment should be adequately provided in order to enable the students to perform investigative activities with ease and freedom of movement. 3. Allow them to plan data-gathering procedure, the materials and the tools to be used and the report on the finished product. With the whole class, critique the presentation and accuracy of the data gathered and conclusions arrived at.
