A Message From Our Principal

Dear Parents, We are happy with the way things are going with our Leader in Me program at Southland. We have introduced three of the seven habits, and with Valentines Day approaching what better time can there be to implement the fourth habit, Think Win-Win! Everyone can win. All of our students will be taught this habit of being kind and considerate of others. We will encourage students to engage in noncompetitive, cooperation building activities within the classrooms and at recess. We will be helping them to learn about emotional bank accounts. When you do and say nice things and treat others kindly, you will make a deposit into their emotional bank accounts. On the other hand, acting rudely or being mean is a withdrawal. We want them to know that when conflict arises, they should look for third alternatives that make both sides happy. Living this habit takes courage. The first three habits help build a foundation for that courage. Being proactive and taking charge of your actions and words is the most important part of this foundation. Knowing that how you treat others will build good relationships for the future comes from Beginning with the End in Mind. Living the habit of First Things First also includes knowing that people come first! This foundation makes it possible to live the Win-Win philosophy. Thank you parents, for supporting this program and reinforcing the habits at home. Safety is very important to us at Southland. We have been working with Riverton officials, as well as our district, to make sure our school is as safe as possible. Within the next few weeks the district will install several new state-of-the-art security cameras throughout the school, inside and outside. They have already installed 2 peepholes in every portable door, one adult height and one student height. For safety, we have asked our teachers to keep the portable doors locked at all times, so please check-in before heading outside. You can help us by checking in at the office and getting a badge or name tag when you are visiting the school. If you forget, our teachers and staff will remind you throughout your visit. Thank you for helping us make sure our school is a safe place for everyone. Thank you for your support, Michele Daly & Tiffany Cooke
