BISHOP CHALLONER

CATHOLIC COLLEGIATE SCHOOL

POLICY : HIV AND AIDS

Aims
To ensure all students have factual information on HIV and AIDS.

To put this information into a Catholic context.

“We are, then, dealing with an intrinsically moral issue and not simply one of public health.
No campaign against Aids can ignore or trivialise the moral question”.

Cardinal Basil Hume.

We follow the guidelines of the Diocese of Westminster.

Education on HIV/AIDS is integrated into the curriculum of Bishop Challoner R.C. School.
Aspects of the subject are dealt with in R.E., PSHE, Social Studies, Biology and Technology.

Clear factual information must be given to students on how the HIV virus is spread and the
consequences. It is also important to allay the fears caused by sensational and inaccurate
media reporting.

As Catholic educators, we must also make is abundantly clear to our students that those who
suffer with Aids deserve great compassion and understanding. Their lot is indeed hard
without the added burden of prejudice and intolerance.
