Re: Ocean acidity and fisheries collapse Dear President Obama, Please ask the PhDs on your staff and within your Cabinet to dig deeply into this. You have nally made climate change a priority at the White House, and you need to know that the challenge we face with CO2 emissions extends to the depths of the ocean, and to the foundation of our food chain. Acidication of the ocean must be part of the discussion of the impacts of anthropogenic CO2 emissions -- along with drought, famine, water wars, severe weather, and sea level rise -- with respect to the social and economic chaos that will come with continued expansion of carbon-based energy and burning of fossil fuels.

Present and Future Changes in Seawater Chemistry

Richard A. Feely, James Orr, Victoria J. Fabry, Joan A. Kleypas, Christopher L. Sabine, and Christopher Langdon Abstract The oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 changes the seawater chemistry and potentially can alter biological systems in the upper oceans. Estimates of future atmospheric and oceanic CO2 concentrations, based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emission scenarios, indicate that atmospheric CO2 levels could approach 800 ppm by the end of the century.

Corresponding models for the oceans indicate that surface water pH would decrease by approximately 0.4 pH units, and the carbonate ion concentration would decrease by as much as 48% by the end of the century. The surface ocean pH would be lower than it has oceans buffering capacity, which would reduce its ability to accept more CO2 rates of nearly all calcifying organisms studied to date decrease in response to decreased carbonate ion concentration. In general, when pCO2 was increased to -5% to -60% was observed. Unless calcifying organisms can adapt to projected changes in seawater chemistry, there will likely be profound changes in the structure of pelagic and benthic marine ecosystems.

Please lead US as Charles Grant did -- emulate him (http://WhoIsCharlesGrant.com) Call on leaders and colleagues in the energy sector to join you -- boldly courageous Begin scheduling the retirement and dismantling of the old fossil fuel infrastructure Shift investments from carbon energy infrastructure to new carbon-free technology Compel Congress to enact a revenue-neutral carbon fee with rebates to all citizens

Barack, begin talking about what values can save Earth. For humanity
