The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program is now accepting applications for the 20132014 Fellowship Year. The Einstein Fellowship Program is available to current K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators with a demonstrated excellence in teaching and leadership. Selected teachers spend 11 months in Washington, D.C., sharing their expertise with STEM program directors or policy makers. Einstein Fellows may serve in a congressional office or in one of several government agencies. Fellows receive a monthly stipend and an allowance for professional travel and relocation. The fellowship year begins August 2013. Applications are currently open and due by 11 p.m. EDT on Dec. 5. Learning more about this opportunity here. Common exam evaluator Common exam evaluators will analyze, score and report student proficiency levels on Common Exams based upon a specific rubric.

CMS releases student-survey results A student survey conducted in the classrooms of 1,700 teachers in 2011-2012 has shown educators received top marks from students for making classes challenging, explaining material so that students learn and for demonstrating care for students. CMS released district-wide findings of a student survey given to more than 5,000 teachers across the state. North Carolinas Department of Public Instruction decided to conduct the Tripod survey, designed by a Harvard professor and a global educational firm, after CMS teacher teams advocated the use of student input in teacher assessment. The survey measures student perception in seven areas, called the Seven Cs: care,

confer, captivate, clarify, consolidate, challenge and control. The survey was given to more than 20,000 students of the 1,700 teachers chosen for the survey in CMS. Wells Fargo doubles your gift to ASC During the 2012 One Community. One Campaign., you can have your gift to the Arts & Science Council doubled, thanks to a generous $100,000 match opportunity from Wells Fargo. The dollar-for-dollar match will be applied to donations to ASC from CMS employees and will directly support ASCs Cultural Education Fund. The dollars will directly impact CMS through field trips and classroom experiences for children, and teacher training and development. One Campaign. continues through Nov. 16. Discovery Education account update CMS has adopted a process to upload new teachers to the Discovery Education site daily. With this process, a convention for username and password has been adopted and some existing accounts might be impacted. Please click here for details. Starting Monday, Nov. 5, please use the new naming convention to log in Discovery Education.

CMS is introducing a new process to identify potential facilitators CMS is introducing a new process for candidates interested in becoming facilitators, starting will literacy facilitators and eventually elementary math and academic facilitators. The application period begins on Oct. 15, and runs two weeks. NC Standard Course of Study resources NCDPI wants educators and public school supporters to have access to the answers they need surrounding the many changes occurring this year in our schools. They developed a new website that features a wealth of information on the new NC Standard Course of Study, including a thorough overview of the new standards, plus a menu of resources for educators to explore. It can be found here.

As a common exam evaluator, you will analyze, score and report student proficiency levels on common exams based upon a specific rubric. You will also attend training, maintain strict timelines and maintain confidentiality. The following requirements apply:

World Affairs Councils Council Scholars awards The World Affairs Council of Charlotte is pleased to announce the Council Scholar Awards for the 2012-13 school year. The Council Scholar Program offers a unique opportunity for selected educators to travel out of the country and bring their experiences abroad home to their school community in North Carolina. National Federation of Independent Business: Young Entrepreneur Awards The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards program raises awareness among the nation's youth of the critical role that private enterprise and entrepreneurship play in the building of America. Maximum award: $10,000 in tuition assistance. Eligibility: high school seniors. Deadline: Dec. 17.

AWARDS
PBS LearningMedia/ The Henry Ford PBS Teacher Innovator Awards recognize innovative Pre-K-12 classroom educators, media specialists and technology coordinators who use digital media to enhance student learning. Entrants submit a short video or PDF with text and images that showcases their work. Entries can be a demonstration of a unique teaching technique or the outcome of influence on a student work. Maximum award: all-paid, week-long "Innovation Immersion Experience" at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Mich. in August 2013; free professional development from PBS TeacherLine. Eligibility: pre-K-12 classroom educators, media specialists and technology specialists/coordinators. Deadline: Dec. 12. 2012-13 Christopher Columbus Awards The Christopher Columbus Awards is a national, community-based STEM competition for middle school students and teachers looking to make a difference in their community. Working in teams, students identify a problem in the community and apply the scientific method to create an innovative solution. Maximum award: $25,000 grant. Eligibility: schools (grades 6-8) and community groups. Deadline: Feb. 4. NSTA: Shell Science Teaching Award The Shell Science Teaching Award recognizes one outstanding classroom science teacher who has had a positive impact on his or her students, school, and community through exemplary classroom science teaching. Maximum award: $10,000. Eligibility: K12 classroom science teachers. Deadline: Nov. 12. IRA/Weekly Reader: Eleanor M. Johnson Award The International Reading Association/Weekly Reader Eleanor M. Johnson Award recognizes an outstanding elementary classroom teacher of reading/language arts. The award honors Eleanor M. Johnson, founder and editor-in-chief of Weekly Reader, who died in 1987. Maximum award: $1,000. Eligibility: classroom or reading teachers working directly with students on a consistent basis in an elementary classroom setting who have taught for five full years and are nominated by at least four persons; applicants/nominees must be Association members. Deadline: Nov. 15. IRA: Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Award

The International Reading Association Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Award honors an outstanding elementary teacher of reading and language arts dedicated to improving teaching and learning through reflective writing about his or her teaching and learning process. Maximum award: $1,000. Eligibility: regular classroom elementary teachers of reading and language arts grades K-6; must be IRA members. Deadline: Nov. 15. NSTA: Wendell G. Mohling Outstanding Aerospace Educator Award The National Science Teachers Association Wendell G. Mohling Outstanding Aerospace Educator Award recognizes excellence in the field of aerospace education. Maximum award: $3,000, as well as $2,000 in expenses to attend NSTA's national conference. The recipient of the award will be honored during the Awards Banquet and the Aerospace Educators Luncheon at the NSTA Conference. Eligibility: educators in informal education settings (e.g., museums, government, science centers). Deadline: Nov. 30. NSTA: Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching The Delta Education/Frey-Neo/CPO Science Awards for Excellence in Inquirybased Science Teaching will recognize and honor three full-time Pre-K-12 teachers of science who successfully use inquiry-based science to enhance teaching and learning in their classroom. Maximum award: $1,500 towards expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference, and $1,500 for the awardee. Eligibility: Pre-K-12 teachers of science. Deadline: Nov. 30.
