Katia:
Hey, Enam, I'veheard that in Bangladeshthere are still arrangedmarriages. Is that true?
Enam:
Yes, it is true. Westill have arrangedmarriages but the number of arranged marriages isdeclining these daysbecause students, or evenyou can say (the) younggeneration don't like thiscustom anymore. They wantto choose their own bride or groom by themselves, butyeah, we still have thisarranged marriage in our villages where the bridedoesn't know the groom andthe groom doesn't evenknow the bride. Their parents just arrange themarriage and introducethem for two days or a fewweeks, they just get to knoweach other, maybe just littletalks ... then they just getmarried. Everything startsafter the marriage.
Katia:
Wow! That is sointeresting, but what aboutyou? How do you feel aboutit?
Enam:
Actually, I havedecided not to go for anarranged marriage, and Ihave already talked with mymom and she said, " OK,you can choose your ownbride" ... but tell me Katia, what would you do if youwere in Bangladesh and youhad to do arrangedmarriage? Suppose you arein Bangladesh. You are aBangladeshi girl and your parents are asking you tomarry a guy they choose for you.
Katia:
Well, I would reallytrust my parents that theywould choose the best thingfor me, however if I wouldmeet somebody else beforethey did, I would probablywant to choose my ownhusband, but then it wouldalso be interesting tounderstand my parents andbecause I know they wouldwant the best thing for me,but it's a little bit difficultquestion.
Enam:
So, Katia, do youhave arranged marriages inMexico? Or you don't have?
Katia:
Actually, not really.Mexican boys, Mexicangirls ... they fall in love andmany times actually they goagainst the parents andactually that's common inthe movies. So, no arrangedmarriages in Mexico. ButEnam, I'm very curious, howdo arranged marriageshappen? How do theywork?
Enam:
Well, it's kind of interesting I think becausethe match makers oftenstudy about the familybackgrounds, their valuesand they perceptions, everything, and when theysee that this two peopleshave the same, kind of,values, and they share thesame level of understanding, then theytalk with the parents andalways both the man andwoman has a chance to talkabout the values and how tothink about the lives andthat then they decidewhether to get married or not.
Katia:
That is so interesting.
