Todd:
So, Kadi, you arefrom Estonia. Can youtalk about gender rolesfor the new generationcompared to the older generation?
Kadi:
Yes, in Estonia, Ithink it's really like, wehave this kind of Westerntype of family, and under Western type, I mean likethat it doesn't matter if like ... the woman doesn'thave to be a housewife. She can work. She cando whatever she likes.Like, even maybe thetendency right now is thatwomen are more ...becoming more likemasculine. Often ithappens that womenmake more money thanmen do and they're theones who bring the breadin the house. Yeah, compared to Easternsociety where usuallywomen are considered ashousewives. They justhave to clean and cookand raise the kids, and inmy country ... no ...there's not such a thingand I think it always hasbeen like that. I'm notquite sure but...
Todd:
Who does thechores like cooking andcleaning?
Kadi:
Yeah, I think we alldo it. We don't have thatkind of rule that womenonly have to clean andcook. Of course in somefamilies, it is like thatbecause women arebetter cleaning, especially, rather thanmen are, but yeah, menare quite good cooks.
Todd:
What do people dofor childcare? Like whotakes care of thechildren?
Kadi:
Nannies. Yeah. Wehave nannies for workingmothers, they usually liketo hire people to watchover the children and justthey play with them andalso like kindergarten, likechildren start going tokindergarten in Estoniawhen they're reallyyoung, maybe from threemonths. I think even, yeah, you can go to workwhen your child is likehalf-a-year old. Just go towork. Take a child there, and people are going tocare about her.
Todd:
Is the nannyexpected to cook andclean as well?
Kadi:
It depends on thecontract. It depends onthe contract. Yeah, if youhire a person who thatyou say you're gonna payhim or her, usually her, like for cleaning, cooking, taking care of thechildren, whatever, itdepends on the contract.
