ROAD FREIGHTERS OPPOSE SA CARBON TAX South Africas Road Freight Association (RFA) says it will lobby against the SA Governments proposed carbon tax set for implementation on January 1, 2015. The RFA says it opposed the carbon tax, especially as the local availability of clean fuels and biofuels, producing less carbon dioxide, remained an issue, Engineering News reported. The formal introduction of cleaner fuels in South Africa was set to take place on July 1, 2017. RFA technical and operations manager Gavin Kelly was reported as saying the carbon tax burden would also fall on a road freight industry with low margins but which kept the wheels of the economy turning. INVESTOR PLAY FOR SANDALWOOD INVESTMENT SCHEME Listed investment company Hamilton Securities Limited is preparing a competing bid for the acquisition of a potentially lucrative sandalwood plantation investment scheme in managed by Elders Forestry in Western Australia. As with other companies in the agricultural investment scheme sector in Australia, Elders is under financial pressure to offload the forestry assets and has agreed a A$70 million deal on the Sandalwood Schemed, with Santanol Pty Ltd. The Financial Standard Online reported that for the deal to go through Hamilton executive director Giles Craig says that Elders requires the support of unit holders. But Hamilton, a listed investment company, is preparing a counter-bid in consultation with the current unit holders of the scheme, who believe they are at risk of recording substantial losses on their investment.
