MantaWatch Internship Program Application Pack 2013

A four-week manta research and conservation internship available to Indonesian marine science students and supported by four Guy Joseph Award full scholarships. This internship offers young marine professionals an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and insight, while developing and demonstrating their skills. MantaWatch is a UK marine research and conservation organization that promotes awareness and participation in manta ray conservation worldwide. Guys Trust provides educational opportunities for young people in developing countries. The charity was established in memory of Guy Joseph, a founding member of the MantaWatch team. Be studying towards a degree in marine/coastal environmental sciences, fisheries science, marine/ coastal resource management, or a related discipline. Be at least 20 years of age. Possess excellent proficiency. written and spoken English

PROGRAM
MantaWatch has teamed up with Guys Trust to offer four Guy Joseph MantaWatch Awards to deserving and academically gifted students in fields related to marine science. The Guy Joseph MantaWatch Award is a full scholarship to the MantaWatch Internship Program. The successful candidates will join MantaWatch for four weeks1, working at a field site in Indonesia under the close supervision of the Research Director. They will receive tuition in manta ray and elasmobranch ecology and management, and training in monitoring and scientific diving techniques. Working alongside MantaWatch staff and partners, they will gain experience of standard field techniques, experimental design, sampling protocols, environmental monitoring, scientific diving, and the role of citizen scientists in conservation management. MantaWatch interns play a critical role within the team, while gaining valuable experience of managing and analyzing large datasets generated by MantaWatch members around the world. Interns will work with MantaWatch staff to communicate research findings, including via the preparation of scientific papers. This internship is an opportunity to work within an international research and conservation organization, and to interact with professional marine scientists, while gaining valuable practical experience to support graduate studies in marine science.

Be computer-literate in standard software applications, including Microsoft Office applications. Have a track record of successful interaction with different cultures and beliefs. Be willing to travel and work in remote locations with basic amenities. Have strong interpersonal communication and networking skills, and be energetic, engaging, social and articulate. Possess, or be able to obtain, DAN (Divers Alert Network) insurance or similar, a recent certification of fitness to dive issued by a medical professional, and basic open water SCUBA certification issued by a recognized certifying agency (e.g., PADI). Be proactive, independent and posses the qualities of a future leader and MantaWatch ambassador.

AWARD
This fully funded internship includes: Living stipend up to IDR 2,000,000; Accommodation at the field site; Diving equipment, survey materials and other field costs if required; and Domestic flights and travel if required. The successful candidate will require access to a laptop computer during the internship.

A review panel will assess applications against the eligibility requirements. Eligible applicants will receive instructions on how to submit a short application video. Applicants will be short listed via a transparent and democratic selection process. Short listed applicants will be interviewed. Please note, due to the large volume of applications we are only able to respond to short listed applicants. Only complete applications will be considered. If you have not been contacted within 4 weeks of the submission date, then you have not been selected for this internship.

REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must: Be enrolled in a degree program at a graduate school in Indonesia both at the time of application and during the internship.
