Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property to be bought and sold, and are forced to work. Slaves can be held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase or birth, and deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to demand compensation. - Wikipedia

Of course, each of us soon comes to realize that the environment has its own form and style, and that we can only go so far in re-organizing it. Attempts to impose our desires upon the external world often result in that phenomenon known as Natural Opposition, wherein our efforts to change things are resisted or completely impaired. Thus, we are usually able to arrange furniture within our homes and plant trees where we want them upon our estates. But outside the walls of our domiciles, and beyond the fences of our grounds, there are other entities who are also devising means to control their environment. If they are allowed to persist in their endeavors, some of them will actually end up telling us how to arrange our furniture and dictating what type of foliage we may plant, and even where we may place a tree. Persons who are prisoners or slaves, and people who live in China, or in condominiums, or in rented apartments, flats or homes, are automatically restricted from many outer activities by

dictatorship, or by the rules of a homeowners association, or by a landlords rental agreement. We usually accept these restrictions as being normal. However, if these other entities, including bacteria, lions, sharks, politicians and governmental agencies, are permitted to expand their ambitious control unchecked, each of us would soon become insolvent, enslaved or eaten alive until we are dead. Our immune systems and sense of individuality are what step forth to check the expansion of dictators and tax collectors sometimes we succeed, especially when acting in conjunction with others of like mind, and sometimes we die, or at least we end up paying outrageously unfair taxes. Therefore, the often-heard phrase, Ye are against the people, ii takes on a certain daily meaning of self-promotion and selfpreservation. With everyone and everything ultimately out to protect itself, we can easily come to see our society, the human civilization, and even life itself, as a vast battlefield in which the dynamic strife of contending forces results in the status quo. Extraordinary aggression by any special interest results in war and can be

These are pitiful works, both in their exposition and in the motivation of their readers. However, many other books present a more scholarly approach. One may find dissertations on the Qabalah, volumes about Initiation, and tomes that set forth the Rites of Ceremonial Magick. We quickly define the Black Arts as being selfish in nature,

usually at the expense of the environment or of other people, and White Magick as being selfless effort toward speeding up the evolutionary process for everyone and everything. In between these two extreme definitions, we find the quaint terms Yellow Magic and Shades of Gray, which define the realms wherein magicians everywhere usually find themselves. The first book in this little Essay offers the basics of Ceremonial Magick, from the gold mine of the initiate, through the machine shop of the magician, to the advanced methods of pure White Magick. It can be of value to the beginner, but even the advanced magus might find a few techniques and hints to fortify his or her database. But please remember - Sometimes things get out of control:

THERE ARE ALSO A GREAT NUMBER of books on Meditation or Yoga available in the marketplace. Many are superficial, merely dealing with the techniques of stress-reduction in a busy world, and a rather high percentage relates to the difficult postures and poses of Hatha Yoga. However, some books present a more refined approach. One may find dissertations on the ancient science and art of meditation, and other texts that set forth the principles of Raja Yoga.

The subject is MYSTICISM. This term derives from the Greek mystikos, an initiate of the Eleusinian Mysteries, and is defined as the aspiration towards attaining identity with, or conscious awareness of, ultimate reality, spiritual truth, or primordial consciousness through direct experience, intuition, or insight. We will be examining the "Mysteries of Mysticism," but why should there be "Mysteries?" Well, the Greek word mysteria means initiation. The process of initiation implies that the magicians, as well as the mystic's, goal unfolds gradually in several, distinct stages, degrees or steps. The term mysticism originated in a Greek word that meant "to conceal." In the Olympian world, "mystical" referred to "secret" religious rituals. In early Christianity, the term came to refer to "hidden" allegorical interpretations of scriptures. Only later did the term come to denote a "mystical theology" that included direct experience of cosmic consciousness. The generally accepted definition does not include experiences such as out-of-the-body events, telepathy, precognition, and clairvoyance, for all of these are associated with known objects, or are qualities that utilize the senses, or are achieved via ordinary introspection (such as human thoughts). If we were to assemble a collection of formal definitions of "Mysticism" or "Mystical," we would have to read through a lot of long words accompanied by numerous philosophical distinctions. But the process itself is quite simple, even if the definitions appear to be complex. Therefore, in this Essay, we simply define Mysticism as Union with the Primordial Consciousness. The second book in this little Essay hopes to be one of those refined texts, offering the basics of Raja Yoga from the basic concepts of the moral structure, through the discipline of the body, emotions and mind, to the advanced results of meditation. But please remember Nobody ever said it was going to be easy!

Introduction
A Glossary is a list of difficult or specialized words with their definitions, often placed at the back of a book.

that a Glossary or Definition of Terms is usually placed at the back of a book or an essay, where the reader can refer to it when seeking the meaning of some obscure terminology. But we will constantly be using terms in this Treatise that have been routinely subjected to misuse, misinterpretation and misunderstanding. Thus, in order to avoid any confusion, the Definitions will herewith precede the practical instruction and discussion of the various subjects.
EVERYONE KNOWS

Please note that these Definitions are not in alphabetical Order M AGIC , or Magick however it is spelled, is defined in this Essay as "The Induction of Change." Everybody, it seems, wants a better way of life and if they can't get it by hard work, then why not use "supernatural" means to accomplish their ends? Of course, Magic is not supernatural. It is simply "natural," but some weak-minded practitioners, and a lot of superstitious non-practitioners, seem to think that it utilizes powers that are above and beyond natural laws. Most intellectuals merely discredit it completely. Additionally, this Essay has nothing to do whatsoever with prestidigitation, or "stage magic," for that is just illusion and trickery.
xiii

The word Magic is derived from Magus, an Old Persian term used to denote a Zoroastrian astrologer-priest. This word found its way into the English language from the Old French word magique in the late 14th century. Magic has been, and still is, practiced in every civilization and culture throughout the world. It was, and is, well-known throughout China, Tibet, Europe, Africa, India, Arabia, among the Indians of the Americas, the aborigines of Australia, and even in that youngster, The United States of America. The old spelling, Magick, was revived by the Master Therion in order to distinguish the sacred art from entertainment by sleight of hand or the use of deceptive devices. D IVINATION is that branch of the magical arts that deals with the viewing of a reflection of any given situation. This is the practice of consultation, assessment and seeking guidance. Commonly known as "fortune telling," this process encompasses many styles, including astrology, tea leaves, psychometry, I Ching, and of course, the Tarot. From time to time, everyone wants to know what is really going on from some deeper or different perspective. Does he love me? Should I look for a new job? Am I being attacked by evil forces? Why am I so distressed? Will the stock market rise or fall? The common person will often seek out a consultant: A medical doctor, a psychologist, a gypsy, an astrologer, et cetera. The magician is encouraged to perform his or her own readings or, if they are "too close" to the situation, they should at least consult another initiate. A magician should become familiar with all the various forms of divination, then select the one that is most appealing (because it is seemingly the most accurate) and proceed to specialize in its practice and performance. Some people just pick the easiest format - others will go on to master all of these arts. ASTROLOGY is perhaps the most complex of the divinatory arts. There are two forms: Scientific and Reflective. The Scientific format involves constructing a chart and then looking up the meanings of the houses, signs, positions, and angles (or accessing these meanings from memory). This form is actually an intellectual exercise.
xiv

One may include astrological calculations in his or her rituals. TEA LEAVES, CRYSTAL BALLS, AND MAGICAL MIRRORS are all in the same category. One looks at (or into) the leaves, ball or mirror, and an image (or a scene or a symbol) appears. This image is then interpreted. Two factors are involved: (1) Seeing the image - this is called clairvoyance. (2) Interpreting the image - this may involve the intellect, but it really should involve the passive, philosophical mind, or even intuition. PSYCHOMETRY is the art wherein an object (a ring, bracelet, watch, shirt, or anything belonging to the subject) is held, and the operator senses the vibration of the item. An idea or image is then perceived, and interpreted, based on that vibration. I CHING (Yi King in the Cantonese dialect) means Book of Changes, and it is an ancient Chinese system of philosophy and divination. Six coins or sticks (or 49 yarrow stalks) are thrown, or otherwise manipulated, in response to a stated situation or question. The resulting pattern is noted and the interpretation is looked up in an I Ching book or even via the Internet. THE TAROT format involves posing a question while shuffling a deck of Tarot cards (or even playing cards), arranging the cards into a set pattern (there are many patterns), and interpreting each card according to its position in the "spread" (pattern).
xv

stages of the spiritual path. OCCULT means "hidden." That's all. It does not mean evil, the devil, satanic, or any of the other derogatory terms used by fundamentalist ministers and newspaper reporters. Occult also refers to secrecy. One principle that is always applicable to Magick is: Don't tell other people what you are doing! The discussion and disclosure of your efforts usually results in a dispersion of your magickal energies and gives rise to opposition from your family and associates. ESOTERIC means "pertaining to the few," as differentiated from exoteric, which means "pertaining to the many." Magick is not something to be talked about, except for your "few" associates in this art. WHITE MAGICK is the causing of change in order to advance the evolutionary process. This type of Magick is carried forth in the seventh physiological neurocircuit and is known as Metaprogramming - this implies that the inherent programming in all lesser (lower) levels of consciousness is essentially fixed in place and unchangeable - unless one gains access to this very high realm of being wherein change is possible. This level corresponds to the concept of Wisdom and Will. BLACK MAGIC is the causing of change in order to advance or benefit the magician at the expense of someone else. It is thus a form of burglary. It is commonly assumed that the White school and the Black school exist in opposition to each other. This is due to the fact that they are working in opposite directions.
xvi

Historically, specific acts of Black Magic included Bewitching the Neighbor's Livestock, Winning the affection of a Maiden , and Bearing False Witness. Contemporary, specific acts of Black Magic include Sending Spam over the Internet, Displaying Advertising intended to mislead the Purchaser, and Selling Curses and Spells to witless Clients. YELLOW MAGIC is the maintaining of the status quo, and it seeks to preserve a harmonious, gentle way of life. Yellow Magic is performed only when either the White or the Black way gains dominance. In other words, when things get moving too fast or become stagnated. The school of Buddhist thought comes to mind. Examples of Yellow Magic include acts to Find a Lost Dog, Promote a Business, and Locate a new Dress. These actions do not bring gain at the expense of someone else but, on the other hand, they do not contribute to the evolutionary advancement of mankind. HIGH MAGICK is a term that has mixed connotations. The U.S. Department of Justice defines High Magic as "the manipulation of energies." Oh Lord, Give us a Break ! Other folks say it is White Magick, Aegyptian Magick, Ceremonial Magick, or simply Magick as opposed to Witchcraft. With all these mixed signals being transmitted, the term will not be used again in this Essay. A MAGICIAN is a practitioner of Magick. Other terms include: Magus, Magi (plural), and Maga (a female magician). SORCERER is another title that denotes a magician, but (again) it often suffers from confused usage. The word Sorcery derives from the Old French word Sorcerihich that entered the English language around 1300 and had its roots in the Vulgar Latin term Sortiarius, from sors ("fate") - obviously meaning "one who influences fate." The appellation Sorceress first appeared in English in the late 14th century, while Sorcerer apparently did not find usage until 1526. In this Essay, the term Sorcerer is defined as One who performs Magic, but without the full knowledge of what they are doing. Thus a Sorcerer or Sorceress is essentially a Black Magician, although one who is merely stupid, uninformed or deluded, and
xvii

who is fully capable of eventually seeing the error of his or her ways. This term is not to be confused with the designation of the essentially evil Black Brother. A BLACK BROTHER (or Sister) is a magician of high rank who sells out to his or her ego for the purpose of gaining power or wealth, or in order to preserve his or her sense of separate individuality. Black Brothers can join forces, in which case they become members of The Black Lodge. A LODGE is an Order, association, network, tribe, circle, or other similar designation that denotes a group of like-minded individual practitioners and their students. Of course, a Lodge can also refer to a Temple or a building, or even a tent in the desert. Other terms include cult and sect, and these are used by fanatical ministers and newspaper reporters with great glee. Cult derives from "cull," the process wherein ill-sized or defective oranges or little chickens are separated from the bulk product that is intended for the marketplace. Sect is short for "section" - a mere part or piece of the whole. Both terms carry a negative connotation in the minds of the general public. THE BLACK LODGE is a formal association composed of Black Brothers and Sisters who have banded together for the mutual satisfaction of their desires for personal benefit and their pursuit of power. The Black Lodge very often manifests in the Political and Financial arenas, and currently goes under the alias, The MilitaryIndustrial Complex. THE WHITE LODGE is a formal association of White Magicians who have banded together for the mutual satisfaction of their goal of evolutionary advancement for all of humanity (and even the lesser kingdoms in nature). The White Lodge is usually hidden (occulted) from view. THE GREAT WHITE LODGE is the overshadowing parent of our Planetary Hierarchy or White Brotherhood, and is said to be located in the Sirius Star System. This cannot be proven. THE WHITE BROTHERHOOD is a much misunderstood, and often falsely claimed, title that (in its true sense) is the externalized, planetary manifestation of the White Lodge.
xviii

There are two major expressions now viable on planet Earth: THE TRANSHIMALAYAN WHITE BROTHERHOOD has its roots in the Orient (particularly Tibet) and has been promoted in the western world by a series of feminine messengers who interestingly have a surname that begins with the letter "B" Blavatsky, Besant and Bailey, plus many others whose name does not begin with a "B." THE GREAT WHITE BROTHERHOOD (sometimes known as the A A) has its roots in the middle-east (particularly Ancient Aegypt) and has been promoted by a series of male messengers who have various surnames, including Saint Germain, Rosencreutz, Mathers, Therion and many others. THE SEVEN SECRET CHIEFS compose the membership of the archetypal council that influences the planetary hierarchy of our planet. They simultaneously stand in direct correlation to cosmic principles, spiritual beings, classical prophets, and incarnated humans who are overshadowed by the basic nature of these overlords. They are known as the Mahatmas, the Masters of the Temple and the Magi of the White Brotherhood, the seven Ray Lords, and the seven Chohans. They are said to govern the ongoing, evolutionary advancement of mankind. Their existence cannot be proven, but their possibility is implied by white light being refracted into seven distinct colors as rainbows by raindrops and prisms. Throughout metaphysical history, we encounter claims of people being visited by entities who suddenly materialize, deliver a message or instructions, and then disappear. Sometimes the appearance is subtle (non-visual) and sometimes the appearance is a full-blown physical manifestation. Frater Perdurabo was visited by Aiwass, whom he said he did not see, but whom he sensed, and he even received a mental impression of his "physical" appearance. Alice Bailey was visited, so she said, by the Masters Kuthumi (Koot Hoomi), Morya, and Djwhal Khul, in full physical manifestation. These same Masters were variously said to have met physically with Madame Blavatsky on her journey to Tibet, and Morya met with the Madame in England. The list goes on and on.
xix

The question is: Are these entities actual, living, physical men, or are they etheric human beings, or are they astral entities, or are they thoughtforms created by (now-deceased) human beings, or are they manifestations sent by the recipient's "higher self," or are they merely a convenient hallucination, or are they the results of a disordered psyche? The author does have direct experience in communicating with "Masters" and Devas in an etheric-physical sense, wherein their outline is sensed or actually seen, or wherein their presence is felt (sometimes in an almost overwhelming manner) as they deliver their message through "channeling" or other "psychic" communication, but the experience of a fully-manifested, physical being is still wanting. We must leave the decision as to the reality of manifested beings up to each individual. Something is certainly happening, but let not the magician give credence to anything that does not lie within his or her own experience. THE PLANETARY HIERARCHY denotes the ascending ranks of initiates and Masters who govern the spiritual development of our planet Earth. This is another designation for The White Brotherhood, whose existence cannot be proven. An ADEPT is, in common terms, one who is "skilled" (in some area). In magickal terms, an Adept is an accomplished being of high (expanded) consciousness. But there is a principle here that must be remembered, for it is critical to our understanding and our efforts:

An Adept is not an Adept unless operating in the Light Body.

For example, Mr. Johnson is a practicing magician. When he performs his Magick, he does so in his Body of Light and his consciousness is expanded beyond mere personal considerations. But when he is working in the marketplace, Mr. Johnson is subject to the same rules that govern all the rest of humanity. For one thing, when operating as a normal human being, his personality may be pleasant, mild, gruff, critical, extroverted or withdrawn, and is subject to modifications according to stress levels and considerations of physical pain or discomfort. But when operating in his Light Body, his personality will be aligned and his radiance will take on entirely different qualities.
xx

There are some advanced beings who apparently remain constantly in rapport with their higher nature, and thus their Light Body, and they can be considered to be Adept at all times. We often call them Master or Avatar, or some similar title. THE LIGHT BODY is built in mental matter on the higher (abstract) mental plane. It should not be confused with the astral body (it almost always is), which is built up from emotional matter on the astral plane. The Body of Light is more stable than the astral body, and the idea is that the Light Body will (first) overshadow the astral body, and (second) supercede and replace the astral body. The Light Body is also known as the Soul Body or Causal Body, and although it is relatively permanent in relation to the illusory astral body, it is eventually subject to disintegration. iv ENLIGHTENED or ILLUMINED are similar terms that imply a person has reached the end of the spiritual path, which is true but also not true. The en prefix in enlightened means inner or inside; thus this term refers to an Inner Light. Illumined means lit up. Both terms refer to a person who is involved with an awareness of, or identification with, an inner light that is also radiated out into the environment where it can affect other beings. Aside from the subjective feelings of a human being who is in the presence of a temporarily or permanently enlightened person, one of the best tests is to observe that persons influence on animals. Of course, the real test is made by examining the defined size of, and light radiation from, the persons energy field (aura). It is noteworthy to state that the number of people who can actually see a human aura in its fullness are indeed few, even among so-called magicians and mystics. Yet, there is a further consideration within this precarious subject of enlightenment, and this is that a person who is radiating auric light, or in some cases actual visible light, is doing so by virtue of his or her Body of Light or causal body. The causal body is radiating whitish-golden light because it is burning up, just like a sun. Eventually the karmic fuel in the Light Body is exhausted, and then the radiation changes to an unfathomable black light, a clear light known as The Black Sun.
xxi

and bugs) are ultimately included within the consciousness of the mystical magician, we suggest that the Solar Angel is a projection of our own soul, but recommend that he or she be treated as an external entity merely for practical purposes because this is more convenient! The central rite of aspiration in White Magick is to attain to the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel or to contact the Solar Angel. This can be accomplished in several ways. The "central rite" term is used because it comes after the glamorous rituals of the beginner, yet before the attainment of understanding. THE MAGICKAL MEMORY - Where do we come from before we are born? Where do we go when we die? These questions are not to be answered by the reasoning mind, but rather by direct experience. A continuity of consciousness through the process called reincarnation is the generally accepted theory throughout much of the world, but this exists primarily as a belief system and is rarely based on direct experience. The obvious question is, "Why can I not remember my previous lives?" The esoteric tradition tells us that this memory is stored at the Soul (causal) level, and to remember those previous lives one must contact this higher level of his or her own consciousness. Sometimes seers will offer to read your past lives for you, but such readings are often worse than useless, for if they contain false information (and they usually do), an illusionary thoughtform can be created that will cause endless havoc. This is something each individual must do for themselves.
xxii

All of ones physical, emotional, mental, and social imprinting and programming is lost with the death of the brain. That which remains is the subject of our search into the Magickal Memory. Some people do not accept the concept of previous existences and will explain past life "memories" as the tapping into the genetic archives inherited from our parents. There is no need to discount this view, especially in view of the fact that those previous experiences are said to be recapitulated (re-experienced) in this lifetime. Tradition tells us that the entire course of our previous lifetimes is rebuilt and re-experienced at an extremely rapid rate beginning with the union of egg and sperm, and continuing forward through the animal-like stages of prenatal development to birth. The initial experiences of any lifetime are supposedly re-creations, which continue the major events that shaped our consciousness in prior lives. We all look forward to that specific day when our consciousness realizes that the pre-determined experiences have all been acted out and we are truly now moving forward into new territory. Another, perhaps more realistic, view is that any and all experiences that have ever happened to any person are held in an universal consciousness that is spread across all of space and time. These are the so-called Akashic Records. Activated by any individuals genetic code, a person will selectively experience certain events and remember them. Whether stated in metaphysical terminology such as "previous lives," or expressed through the psychological or physiological concepts of "imprinting" or "conditioning," the Magickal Memory still remains a source of information relating to unexplained behavior patterns, and we maintain that it must be apprehended by direct experience. The objective in searching the Magickal Memory is not to remember that one was Cleopatra, Joan d'Arc, Osiris, or Attila the Hun, or even to remember a life as a wretched cripple, or the one where death came with the plague at age twelve. The objective is to retrieve information that explains your unconscious foundation to yourself in the here-and-now. The overall record of everyone's career, including the rise and fall of civilizations, is found in the Akashic Records.
xxiii

KARMA is The Law of Cause and Effect. When a person gets offbalanced due to unworthy thoughts, words, and deeds, their causal "bank account" is credited (added to). When a person redresses offbalanced thoughts, words, and deeds, their causal "bank account" is debited (subtracted from). The Soul is like an individual's bank book, and the Akashic Records are like the bank's records of everyone's accounts, including the history of the bank itself. The idea is that ones account must become balanced, much like the financial requirements for a non-profit corporation, wherein at the end of a fiscal year, nothing remains. SYMPATHETIC MAGICK implies a certain "sympathy" or causative connection between a ritual (and its instruments) and a condition or a scenario in the outer world. Actions portrayed in the rite are meant to have a similar effect on the external situation. NATURAL OPPOSITION is the inertial force that tends to counteract the effects of sympathetic magick. Magick is change, but everything is in its place, or traveling in a particular direction, and it all wants to stay that way. Opposition can begin in the early stages of preparation for a ritual, will often attempt to provide distractions during the rite itself, and may interfere with the resulting energies created by the ceremony. The absence of opposition merely confirms that one is proceeding in harmony with divine Will. THE EGO is a many-sided designation. The Transhimalayan system defines the Ego as the Soul itself (the "reincarnating ego"). Modern psychologists use it as a definition of self-awareness. Common usage says it's a self-centered (selfish or self-important) person. And the school of the eight neurocircuits attributes its meaning to the second circuit of territorial dominance or subservience. In this Essay, ego is used to denote the sense of individual selfawareness, the description of the separate, important person - as opposed to the adept of universal consciousness. SACRIFICE - It should be recognized that the ego is what is sacrificed unto the Higher Self upon the magickal altar. Incense is also a form of sacrifice. The ancient sacrifice of animals (or other humans) may be effective in generating vital energy, but it is repugnant to the white magician.
xxiv

THE SUPER-EGO is a psychological term that refers to the moral part of the mind, which is an assembly of parental and societal values. It stores and enforces external rules. Magically speaking (and this departs from the psychological definition), the Super-Ego is an extension of the self-centered ego. In our efforts to become worthwhile, famous, or meaningful, we tend to identify with someone or something that is greater than our insignificant selves. Examples include sporting teams, rock stars, churches, illumined beings and magical Orders. Of course, we actually remain insignificant, but through our identification, our ego is inflated. "I am a fan of The Rolling Stones, therefore I am important." ...or... "My religion is more correct than yours! Let's start a conflict over it!" T-shirts embossed with pictures of "my heroes" proclaim my superiority. Esoteric jewelry, prominently displayed, shows forth "my spirituality" and "my exceptional choice in metaphysical affiliation." I am a member of the Guru Ramababa sect, and as such I am enlightened (and, of course, better than you). All this nonsense is an expression of the fourth physiological socio-sexual neurocircuit, and as such it is nothing more than subliminal, cultural programming that acts as a barrier to the further development of higher consciousness. On the surface, the psychological definition and the magickal explanation appear to widely differ. But if you were to ponder each one separately, then compare them, you might find that they are the same thing. Oh Lord, preserve us from the Super-ego. THE MATRIX is a term for the structure of the external world. Illusionary in nature, it is a three-dimensional, holographic projection radiated from the interior of a living being. He or she looks out and says, "It is solid, it is real!" But it is not - otherwise magicians would not be able to influence it. The awareness of the illusionary constitution of external "reality" is a hallmark of the advanced magician. SHAMANISM defines the characters and practices of "primitive wizards. In ancient tribal structures there were (are) three officers: The Chief, the Medicine Man, and the Shaman. The Chief is the political leader, the Medicine Man is the doctor who deals with known reality, and the Shaman is the (spiritual) priest who confronts the unknown.
xxv

Today, the Medicine Man and the Shaman are often confused with each other and referred to as the same officer - but this was not always so, and the two titles originally represented quite different functions. The term "Shaman" originally came from Siberia, but it is now applied to the spiritual magician or medicine-man of any tribe, anywhere in the world. Some white people, most of whom are basically deluded and who belong to no ancient tribe whatsoever, nor have they received formal training from such tribes, designate themselves as Shamans because they have taken a few classes on the subject and wish to impress their clients and friends. In reality, many Shamans (the real, indigenous variety) are dangerous. Almost all of them use their arts on behalf of their clients (who pay a fee) for the most petty reasons - to cast spells on difficult neighbors, to acquire wealth, to seduce attractive companions, and (especially) to break spells conjured by other Shamans. These guys are constantly trying to steal each other's power, are engaged in endless, ongoing competition, and remind us of similar tactics used by priests, ministers, scientists, administrators, educators, businessmen, politicians, secretaries and menial workers everywhere. However, they do seem to have a certain amount of unusual power. Voodoo priests, Amazonian Shamans and African witch-doctors (to name but a few examples) routinely heal patients and cast wicked (if not deadly) spells, the effects of which are poo-pooed by modern medical doctors and "rational" scientists. Yet, the evidence remains. It seems that we, in our "advanced" civilization, have developed reason, intellect and rational thinking to a high point indeed. But, in our evolutionary development, we have left something behind - something that is still possessed by the "primitive" mind. We might call it instinct or perhaps natural thinking. There are, of course, advanced Shamans who epitomize the natural healer. Using their developed abilities, they enter the "other world" on behalf of their clients and seek the true cause of disease
xxvi

and psychological disorders, and assist their clients to develop their own spiritual awareness. In this regard they are to be respected, for they are no different than a teacher of White Magick. MEDITATION is commonly described as a practice for relaxation. But that is merely superficial, for the term actually comes from the same root as mediation or the "bringing together" of opposing parties in a dispute. In our case, it is the bringing together of the higher self and the lower self. One ancient example of Meditation is Raja Yoga. This art has eight branches, including Morals ("doing good"), Restraint ("thou shalt not..."), Asana ("control of posture"), Pranayama ("control of energy-breath"), Pratyahara ("introspection"), Dharana ("mental concentration"), Dhyana ("meditation" - the result), and Samadhi (an "expanded" result). For the magician, the purpose of performing these mystical routines is simply that he or she is not going to get very far in Magick if the internal controls are not developed. Thus a wellrounded magician will move forward on two fronts by engaging in both mystical (internal) and magickal (external) practices. VISUALIZATION is a form of meditation - a version of dharana (concentration), wherein fixed objects or dynamic scenarios are imagined. Visualization can also be a form of astral projection. THE GREAT WORK describes the walking of the spiritual path. It specifically does not mean Magick or Meditation or Initiation or Ritual, but it includes these (and all similar) terms. The Great Work is the sum total of all the efforts expended by a spiritual aspirant in his or her journey from "normal" human consciousness to full spiritual attainment, plus all efforts employed in furthering the cause of evolutionary advancement after having reached his or her personal goal. THE PATH refers to The Path of Initiation. There actually is no Path, for if there were, then the process would be much easier. However, there are guideposts and waymarkers, and sometimes the way is smooth and familiar. But at other times, the bewildered aspirant finds that everything is engulfed in
xxvii

total confusion - these are periods when the path disappears, bridges are broken, and individual seekers must expose their own illusions and find their own "Path." Another definition of the Path, perhaps the most specific and realistic, is that it is an actual pathway of Light that leads from the heart chakra to the crown chakra. It is built through meditation. It has been called The Lighted Way, and the Tibetans call it the

higher self and issues instructions and commands that are designed to guide the aspirant along his or her path. But, the human mind loves to argue and to question authority, even if the authority is their own higher nature. So a Guru gets a lot of resistance and argument from students. In India, and among sterner teachers everywhere, the disobedience of orders may well result in the banishment of the student. The famous Oriental statement is, "You may no longer consider yourself to be my student!" So the student might as well go along the program and give up all self-determination in the earlier stages. But then there comes the time when the Chela needs to be "graduated." After following the teacher's orders, often for many years, the aspirant must be allowed to sort things out alone. It has been said that the adept of the Inner Order needs little or no assistance from his superiors. Thus a hallmark of a true, enlightened Guru is that he or she is willing to allow a student to graduate - when the time is right. Some teachers will assume the role of a Guru even though they are not enlightened.
xxviii

These fakers will then refuse to allow their students to find their own way, even when it is obvious that they are ready. This tendency to "hold on" to advanced students is a dilemma faced by parents, teachers and Gurus in all times and ages. For example, in 1969, Guru Capricornus was faced with a problem. Her internal message was loud and clear: "The gates of initiation are closed! Send everyone away!" Her response was, "I will never send anyone away!" Her "hanging on" attitude resulted in no formal "graduations," but her Order then experienced a period marked by ongoing disasters, accompanied by repeated confrontations with the Establishment, and displays of severe internal strife wherein most students left of their own accord. In 1976, Teacher Muriel "Isis" Dorner was faced with a similar dilemma. Her internal message was, "Send everyone away that has been your student for over one year!" Her response (as it was overheard by a nearby student) was to cry out, "No! No! It's not fair!" But three days later, she relented and met with each person who had been her student for more than a year and she graciously said, "Now you have to do it by yourself." Her "graduations" resulted in no hard feelings and many students went on to become competent in their own Light. THE HIGHER SELF is another one of those often misused and misunderstood terms, although the general meaning is quite clear. For the "lower" person (the persona or "personality"), the Higher Self is the Soul or the Solar Angel that resides on the causal plane of consciousness. For the magician who is in touch with his or her Soul, the Higher Self is what would be more correctly termed the Spirit that dwells on the even higher (Buddhic or Atmic) levels. For the magician who is in touch with his or her Spirit, the Higher Self is the Monad that resides on the monadic level. In other words, the term Higher Self is relative, for no matter where one is in any given moment, there is always a higher level of being. This distinction only disappears when one is in the state of Samadhi (universal consciousness), for then all references and differences disappear. BANISHING is commonly defined as the act of "sending away" negative entities from the magickal circle. These entities are known as demons, spirits, shades, shells, ghosts, and so forth.
xxix

However, Banishing ideally sends away all entities, thoughts, concepts, wishes, desires, et cetera, because we want a perfectly clear magickal circle, emptied of all considerations, that is suitably prepared for the Invocation of a higher force. INVOCATION is the magickal procedure wherein a higher force (a god or deity) is "called down" (from a superior, expanded level of consciousness) into the magickal circle and into the magician. LEAKAGE is that phenomenon wherein some (or heaven forbid, all) of the magickal energy somehow "leaks out" of a magickal circle. The result of leakage is uncontrolled, distracting events in the external environment, including irritating noise, sudden weather disturbances, or foul odors. Or a neighbor's garage may catch on fire. The leakage may have several causes. For example, the circle may have a physical break in it (where paint failed to adhere or chalk lines are not continuous), a foreign, unconsecrated object may reside within the circle (like the neighbor's business card), a magickal instrument may fall across or outside the circle, or the magician's mind may simply wander and become unfocused. EXTERNAL GATHERING OF SPIRITS may be confused with leakage, but it is a different matter. Magickal energy attracts spirits from the etheric and astral planes. They gather outside the circle to observe for they are curious. This is normal, and they should simply be ignored. Now if some spirits are troublemakers and there is leakage, then the combination can create a troublesome circus throughout the external environment. Again, it is best to simply check the continuity of the circle and then ignore any ruckus. Both leakage and spirit gathering are common in the beginning stages. But as one progresses on the path they become less obvious and eventually they disappear completely. For the individual magician, their disappearance indicates an increased internal control and a more precise external discipline. Group workings that involve advanced magicians will experience little or no leakage or gathering, but when a beginner is added to their ranks, the external distractions arise again - much to the amazement and terror of the newcomer, accompanied by understanding chuckles on the part of the adepts.
xxx

EVOCATION is the magickal procedure wherein a differentiated force (a "spirit" or a demon) is "called forth" (from his or her isolated place of residence) into a magickal triangle that is located outside the magickal circle. It is of critical importance that a proper Banishing and a successful Invocation be performed prior to evoking a spirit, for the overshadowing consciousness of the invoked deity is what controls the demon. Without the presence of this higher force, the untamed, elemental force of the demon will usually end up controlling the magician. The evocation of a spirit, without first invoking a deity, is a specific definition of the practice of Sorcery and always ends up being a form of Black Magic. THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND is a favored topic of psychologists. Modern psychiatrists are familiar with the term, but they are not included here because they are usually medical doctors whose favorite topic seems to mainly be the prescription of pharmaceutical substances as opposed to actual psychological analysis. Sometimes people have traumatic experiences, especially as children, and the un-resolved events are simply too distressing to keep in the conscious memory. So they are pushed down (stuffed) into areas of the brain where the mind wont have to deal with them. This is sort of like locking an unruly child in a closet. However, these events are still viable, and they come into play when a person encounters a similar experience in their daily life. The person may then react in a bizarre manner, completely unaware of what is causing them to behave as they do. If the response is problematic, they may seek out a psychologist to help them discover the source of their difficulty. The source is called a complex (because it is complicated) and it is said to reside in the subconscious mind. The term subconscious indicates that these complexes are beneath the level of normal awareness. DEMONS or SPIRITS are nothing more than unharmonized aspects of the subconscious mind. Although they appear to be separate entities, and although they may display a universal image unto various magi, these guys are nothing more than repressed (or forgotten) psychological complexes.
xxxi

Another type of spirit is associated with the deva evolution, which includes angels and elemental forces. Thus we hear terms like the four elemental kings, who are the personified images of the fourfold divisions of matter: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. The magician or the mystic, in full expansion of consciousness, contains all things within his or her being. However these spirits are defined or categorized, they must be called forth and controlled, lest they interfere with The Great Work. THE NEW AGE is a slogan that has been used for centuries. Everybody always wants things to get better and the vision of better things to come never fails to draw ardent supporters - and their money. Currently, The New Age is a title that has been adopted by fringe-mystics and pseudo-magicians who usually promote an overly-optimistic, unrealistic view of reality. The 18th dynasty of Ancient Aegypt ( circa 1550 BC) started after the Egyptians drove out the hyksos, the foreign rulers. This is seen as the end of the Second Intermediate Period and the start of the New Kingdom, which historically really was a New Age, because everything in art, politics and culture underwent a radical change. Closer to our time, another true New Age started in 1945 with the detonation of the gadget, the first atomic bomb. This age was already being ushered in, starting around 1900, with the introduction of automobiles, electricity, radio and all the other modern marvels that we now take for granted. After 1945, the transition into a full-blown New Age continued with flying saucers, television, plastic products, LSD, and the Internet system that seems to have forever changed the way humans interface. A particularly obnoxious course of study within the present spiritual New Age community revolves around the subject of prosperity. After attending a few seminars on this topic, one quickly finds them all to be nothing more than subtle, selfish, forms of black magic. A subdivision of The New Age is
xxxii

As we view it today, it has its roots in the Knights Templar, who implemented our current worldwide banking system. Although the Templars were historically crushed (for purely political and economic reasons), do not be mislead! Their banking system, and their remarkable power, has survived throughout the lesser ages. A singular example is the infamous Jolly Roger flag, traditionally flown by pirates. This symbol, a skull, situated above or over two crossed bones, was instituted by the Templars who originally flew it on the masts of their commercial sailing ships in order to warn off pirates! Today, the highly-publicized, yet still secret, Skull and Bones Society is alive and well at Yale University, and its membership includes former and current Presidents of The United States. To further trace out these linkages, simply type any of the following entries into the Internet search engine of your choice:
Templars, Knights Templar, Temple Bar, City of London, Central Bank, Illuminati, New World Order, Trilateral Commission, G-7, G-8, Skull and Bones Society, Federal Reserve System.

Many authors and speakers like to cite the fact that the powers of Light are overcoming (or have overcome) the powers of darkness on planet Earth. This New Age concept is one from which we should be spared, for it is illusionary and wishful thinking. Ah yes, the Light has won many battles on the higher planes, but down-to-earth Terra Firma is still firmly in the grip of The Black Lodge. This is due to the fact that almost everyone, virtually everywhere, is ruled by his or her own selfish ego.

POLITICS is a topic that regularly comes up at the end of any lengthy discussion of metaphysics. This is because spiritual principles have been shared and examined, ideal social structures have been invented or proposed, and then someone eventually brings up the current state of society and the ruling government's position. The Ideal Administration is then compared to the contemporary Establishment and before you know it, revolution is in the air ! This is exactly what has happened many, many times in the past. See any history book for further details. Pay attention to items like Illuminati and Freemasonry and the Founding of The United States. But you will have to seek out esoteric history books, for the Establishment's sponsored texts will certainly omit the metaphysical motivations and spiritual ideals. Also consider the fact that most countries in the world are governed by dictatorships or repressive regimes. The United States and several of its allies in the "first world" offer what is perhaps the best that can be achieved under our current circumstances. Even this group of nations can be closely examined and found wanting, for political leaders are routinely unmasked to reveal their insincerity and corrupt practices. Legislators continuously sell out what is best for the whole in favor of special interests. People in positions of social and financial power constantly bully, manipulate and otherwise influence "free" beings into submission. Some ancient civilizations had ways of dealing with political corruption. They required that administrative office-holders take a vow of poverty, with the government then providing for their needs (and not at an expansive, expensive level), thus theoretically eliminating the personal profit motive. Other societies merely killed their kings and rulers if they didn't look after the people in a befitting manner. However, if you think you can personally influence the present conditions and direction of politics by magical means, take care! This is neither impossible nor even improper, but the Establishment does have its ways of sensing potential change agents, even if they are only working magically. Somehow, its a function of natural opposition.

A MYSTIC is a practitioner of Mysticism. Other terms include: Meditator and Yogi or Yogini. Different cultures will have various names or titles for a person who is intent upon uniting with primordial consciousness, or one who actually has united with that "primary" or "beginning" awareness. Sometimes, someone will merely be vague or metaphysical in their writing or verbal communication, and they are then referred to as being "mystical." But this is just a simple metaphor. THE LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS CONSCIOUSNESS is often described as being a ladder-like series of planes or levels, and sometimes as an arrangement of concentric circles. Both descriptions are accurate. The essential factor is that one is "here" (in the dense physical world) and is intent upon getting to "there" (union with the primordial consciousness). The journey from "here" to "there," sometimes called the spiritual path, involves several alterations in awareness as one acclimates to expanded states of perception. Although it may be convenient to categorize these succeeding levels as being "up," they are actually "in." That is, all external perception is illusionary, for it is simply a holographic projection of the mystic's inner life upon an external, three-dimensional matrix. Thus, we ultimately discover that the primordial consciousness (the "Adi") is not "up there," but rather is "deep inside," covered over with screens and veils that are composed of various forms of glamour and illusion. "Everything in the Universe is nothing but thought." v These Levels of Consciousness have been symbolized in several ways, but three descriptions are somewhat familiar to the western mystic: The Seven Planes, The Tree of Life, and the Concentric Circles. THE SEVEN PLANES Consciousness can be described as being a ladder-like series of seven planes or levels, with the dense physical plane at the bottom and the primordial consciousness (the "Adi") at the top. There is also reference to seven planes that are further divided into forty-nine subplanes. The aspirant is therefore required to rise up through these planes, each of which is considered to be "higher" and "more expanded" than the level(s) that are "lower" on the chart.

CONCENTRIC CIRCLES Consciousness can be also be described in a series of circles that progressively expand or contract. Expanding circles place terra firma at the center. This arrangement would be suitable for the magician who views "higher" consciousness as being "up" and "out," as if he or she is astral projecting or expanding into more subtle levels of awareness: Contracting circles place terra firma at the outer rim. This arrangement would be suitable for the mystic who views "higher" consciousness as being "in," as if he or she is rejecting the illusionary matrix and internalizing into more subtle levels of awareness:

YOGA means "union" or uniting. What is implied here is a Union of the mundane awareness and the primordial consciousness. There are several forms, styles or schools of Yoga:

introduced to India by Yogi Swatmarama in the 15th century. He compiled the Hatha Yoga Pradipika . vi In this text, he describes Hatha Yoga as "A stairway to the heights of Raja Yoga," thus identifying it as a preparation, consisting of physical purification, intended to make the physical body fit for the undertaking of meditation. It has been suggested by some authors that Hatha Yoga is a "black art." This is because the practitioner's focus may be upon the physical body, and such focus may then take precedence over the mental body where the true goal is to be pursued. BHAKTI YOGA - Bhakti is a Sanskrit word that means devotion. For Hindus, this word is used to signify devotion to a deity or an aspect of God. As a style of Yoga, Bhakti is described in the Bhagavad Gita, where it is depicted as the supreme form of divine expression, for which all other practices should be discarded. The word Bhakti comes from the root Bhaj, whose meanings include "to share in", "to belong to", and "to worship." There is neither selfish expectation nor fear involved. The devotee simply feels, believes, and directly experiences his deity to be an Ocean of Love. There is no bargaining or expectation of rewards. The result simply must be experienced by the devotee.
xl

JNANA YOGA - In the Bhagavad Gita, Jnana Yoga (sometimes spelled Gnana Yoga) is described as "Knowledge of the Absolute." Jnana means "knowledge" and forms the basis of the Greek word Gnosis, a state of "knowing" where spiritual knowledge in the sense of mystical enlightenment is signified and not common knowing as derived from books or Tables of Correspondences.

Yoganandas Self Realization Fellowship provides what is possibly the most [<---] tranquil and harmonious venue in the Los Angeles area at Pacific Palisades, California.

xli

AGNI YOGA is the discipline of fire, causing the awakening of the serpentine power (kundalini) through the united action of mind (manas) and life force (prana). Agni Yoga is a synthesis of many styles of yoga, especially Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Raja Yoga. Agni is the Sanskrit word for Fire. also see: Kundalini Yoga

In some applications, the devotee creates a mental image of the Guru (through dharana or "concentration") and places it in a special compartment that is located within his or her own heart chakra. Constant devotion to this image is intended to bring about a state of dhyana (meditation) or "oneness with" the Guru, thus transmitting the consciousness of the teacher to the practitioner by overshadowing or union. KUNDALINI YOGA aims at "raising the kundalini," which is the "serpent fire" that resides in the lowest (root) chakra. The ascent of this force burns off all dross in the other chakras and when it reaches the highest chakra at the crown, the practitioner experiences illumination or union with the primordial consciousness.

xlii

The raising of the kundalini is supposed to be a natural occurrence that is brought about by progress in meditation or devotion. Forced ascent of this primal life force is said to literally burn physical tissue, disrupt the etheric body, lead to obsession or insanity, and is suspected of being the cause of spontaneous human combustion wherein people are mysteriously ignited and turned into ashes. TANTRA YOGA Due to the extensive range of practices included in the term Tantra, it is necessary to review the tantric principles. The common rituals (puja) might be composed of any of the following practices: MANTRA
AND

YANTRA: Mantras are words or phrases that

IDENTIFYING WITH DEITIES: Practitioners either visualize themselves as the deity, or experience a darshan (vision) of the deity. In magickal practice, this first form is known as the assumption of godforms, and both forms can be encountered as the result of an invocation. SECRET RITUALS: These might include the elements of ordinary ritual or may be substituted with other sensual rites such as a feast of forbidden foods, coitus, visiting charnel grounds, and sometimes involving bodily functions like defecation, urination, and vomiting. These are purposeful violations of social or moral codes, or personal repugnations, intended to shock ones consciousness into rearrangement. SEXUAL RITES: In the West, these have been commonly associated with Tantra in its entirety, but really, sexual rites are only practiced by a minority of tantric sects in India.
xliii

Beyond the physical plane, a fusion of Shiva and Shakti energies takes place resulting in a united energy field. On an individual level, each participant experiences a fusion of their own Shiva and Shakti energies. In western arcane schools, and occidental Orders, these techniques are known as (secret) sexual magick rites, and the close-held (occult) secrets of their secret rituals are eventually found to be identical with some Sufi, Tantric, and Taoist practices, which have been openly discussed in Oriental scrolls and books for centuries.

RAJA YOGA - An ancient form of Meditation is called Raja Yoga. This art has eight branches:

Restraint (inhibitory control or "thou shalt not...") Observances ("virtues" or thou shalt) Asana ("control of posture") Pranayama ("control of breathing") Pratyahara ("introspection") Dharana (mental "concentration") Dhyana ("meditation" - the result) Samadhi (an "expanded" result)
These "branches" or "limbs" are found interwoven amongst all of the styles of Yoga that have been described above.

RAMANA MAHARSHI maintained that the purest form of his teachings

associated with Advaita Vedanta, and Jnana Yoga, he recommended Bhakti Yoga to those he saw were fit for it, and also gave approval to a variety of other paths and practices. He wrote In every true spiritual treatise it is said that for attaining spiritual emancipation it is necessary for us to restrain our mind. After knowing that this restraint is the ultimate intention or purpose of such treatises, there is no benefit to be gained by studying without limit a countless number of treatises. AND NOW, in order to maintain some balance in our zealous quest, we present our featured guest speaker U.G. KRISHNAMURTI viii "I have no teaching. There is nothing to preserve. Teaching implies something that can be used to bring about change. Sorry, there is no teaching here, just disjointed, disconnected sentences. What there is - is only your interpretation, nothing else. For this reason there is not now nor will there ever be any kind of copyright for whatever I am saying. I have no claims."

"My aim is not some comfy dialectical thesis but the total negation of everything that can be expressed." "The so called self-realization is the discovery for yourself and by yourself that there is no self to discover. That will be a very shocking thing because it's going to blast every nerve, every cell, even the cells in the marrow of your bones. ix The psyche or self or mind, an entity which UG denied as having any being, for it is composed of nothing but the "demand" to bring about change in the world, in itself, or both. He stated that when the continuity of thought is broken, even for a split second,1 its hold on the body is broken and the body falls into its natural rhythm. Thought also falls into its natural place then it can no longer interfere or influence the working of the human body. In the absence of any continuity the arising thoughts combust. He described how it is the pineal gland ( Ajna Chakra) that takes over the functioning of the body in the natural state, as opposed to thought. U.G. also maintained that the reason people came to him (and to gurus), was in order to find solutions for their everyday real problems, and/or for solutions to a fabricated problem, namely, the search for spirituality and enlightenment . He insisted that this search is caused by the cultural environment, which demands conformity of individuals as it simultaneously places within them the desire to be special. Consequently, the desire for enlightenment is exploited by gurus, spiritual teachers, and other "sellers of shoddy goods", who pretend to offer various ways to reach that goal. FRATER SHIVA STRIKES THE BELL IN FLASHDANCE III - JULY 25, 1992

Chapter 1

Initiation
Initiation has been defined as a "progressive sequence of directed energy impacts." These impacts are characterized by points of tension, and these lead inevitably to points of crisis - the whole process being governed by the Law of Cause and Effect. - Bailey ii
INITIATION IS BOTH A PROCESS AND AN EVENT. As an event, it implies the commencement or the beginning of some enterprise. It may signify entry into a position, a fraternity, a sorority, or an Order, but it can also represent the starting point of any process. Initiation rituals often include (actual or symbolic) indignities that are acted out upon the person of the candidate (the individual who is being initiated). Why would a candidate be made to suffer such real or pretended humiliations? The spiritual path is filled with crisis events that expose the aspirant to his or her illusions and weaknesses, and these are usually uncomfortable, terrifying affairs. Initiatory rites simply attempt to portray a semblance of these events and evoke a feeling similar to what is experienced when it really happens. Having been symbolically subjected to these terrors, it is then expected that the candidate will subsequently undergo them in reality, either within his or her own consciousness, or externally in the "real" world. If the Initiating Officers truly possess the required energetic capability, then such a rite may indeed propel a candidate forward on his or her path.
3

DRUID INITIATION

On the other hand, many schools of thought maintain that an initiation ceremony should not be conferred upon a candidate until he or she has already undergone the corresponding process in consciousness and/or in life. In this case, the ritual represents a confirmation and a commemoration of an advancement previously attained by the aspirant. Both of the above scenarios are realistically applicable and each one potentially contains the element of truth. So, when a candidate is blindfolded and bound, this represents a state of helplessness and inability to do anything about it. When he or she is led three times around a circle, or circumambulated around the interior of a temple, this portrays a wandering in search of truth. When he or she is immersed in water, or has water sprinkled upon them, this depicts the amniotic fluid present at birth and a rebirth into a new (higher) state of being. By the time this lofty symbolism degenerates to the level of the typical collegiate fraternity or sorority initiation rite, the indignities usually include throwing raw eggs at the candidate and the spiritual significance has been lost. But all these ceremonies originate in the definition first given above. As a process, initiation is an ongoing journey into expanded awareness. It is The Path of Initiation, marked by a series of crisis events, or initiations, that lead ever upward, onward and inward.
4

M A S O N I C I N I T I A T I O N circa 1800

Spiritual Initiation does not include rites of entry into collegiate fraternities, business organizations, and political office. Spiritual Initiation is the process and the critical events that exemplify the graded progress of the aspirant toward full spiritual awareness. The earlier grades are typically ego-based, resulting in much confrontation and confusion. The middle stages involve coming to terms with expanded selfawareness and the expiation of karma. The higher levels exemplify the realm of the Master and the process of teaching others. The term, Lineage, refers to the line of adepts, teachers or initiates who have "gone before" the present initiate, and upon whose energies and teachings the candidate relies. A solid, viable lineage provides inspiration as well as security for the individual member. Many lineages can be traced back to ancient times, although the line may be shaky. Backed up by no real lineage, some courses and workshops purport to teach ancient mysteries, but they are actually based on the teacher's reading of books or previous enrollment in a similar course. These seminars abound in metaphysical bookstores and hotel rooms everywhere. You will possibly even get a certificate in Shamanism or a Doctor of Divinity degree. Buyer beware!
5

This is the true lineage. Down the line is where one is coming from the foundation. Up the line is where one is going the future potential. So its a timeline, in a way, but any point is accessible in the here-and-now, depending on ones ability to shift up or down.. The line is distinguished by points of light, but these are not circular in shape, like chakras or globes. Rather, they are the pointed capstones of vast pyramids of light. Each pyramid is clearly outlined and that contour forms the boundary of a dimension. These dimensions are the degrees of initiation, the graded upline of adepts in ones internal lineage, and the holographic reflections of the various levels of the so-called spiritual hierarchy.
6

THE LINE

This line, and its pyramids and capstones, is something that one sees. It resembles the diagram of the seven planes, but fails to evoke the symbology of the Tree of Life. When seen off-center, the pyramids take on a three-dimensional quality and they are not lined up along the linear axis. They are reminiscent of the shapes that are visible within a crystal. When viewed on-line, so to speak, right in the middle of the linear edifice, one ceases to see the structures and instead becomes the line, the lineage, the path, and the being who encompasses all these things. In their off-line juxtaposition, they are symbolically seen as a City of Pyramids. This description of the true lineage, the straight line that extends upward and downward along the spiritual path, is not intended to replace the Tree of Life or the ever-expanding concentric circles of the Forty Aethyrs. It is simply something that has been seen and experienced, After all, its just a line. EXTERNAL INITIATION is a process, with corresponding events, that is bestowed by a guru (teacher) or an Order (group) upon a candidate. Initiation fees always apply! Much of this activity is spiritually valid, some of it is of "mixed" content, and a lot of it is outright fraud. INTERNAL INITIATION is the process, with corresponding events, that is experienced internally, with or without reference to any external rites. In other words, this is the real thing. SELF-INITIATION is the process, with corresponding events, that is set in motion by the individual candidate. A few schools of thought actually provide written initiation rituals for the aspirant to administer to himself or herself. If properly presented, and genuinely linked to a viable lineage, this approach can be quite effective. EMPOWERMENT is a particularly interesting form of initiation in which a level of consciousness, a link with a deity, or a specific
8

power such as healing ability, is transmitted directly from a practitioner to an aspirant. There may or may not be a "labor of preparation" involved and, immediately after the transmission, the aspirant finds that he or she is miraculously transformed or is otherwise able to apply these transmitted energies or powers.

These procedures are known in many cultures and are often linked to ancient lineages. Tibetan Wang ("empowerment") ceremonies offer what is perhaps the shining example of this art. In our modern society, the best known application of this method is probably Reiki, which calls its transmissions "attunements." Reiki has become somewhat muddled mainly due to competition for the (often exorbitant) fees and infighting over inconsequential matters. The diehard troublemakers of this system are represented by the older-school "Reiki Masters" (a pompous title, indeed) who foolishly paid ten-thousand dollars for their third degree mastership, and now find it necessary to condemn and belittle later-school "Independent Reiki Teachers" simply because, "They can't be real because they don't charge enough!" Some older-school "Masters" have also been known to circulate vicious, dire warnings about "dark elements" having been introduced into many newer lines of transmission (again, because they offer attunements at reduced fees). The Black Lodge is there all right and, just like many churches and the political arena, it is firmly entrenched in the old school. The original (oldest-school) system of Doctor Usui had but one degree and charged no fees at all!
9

Another contemporary empowerment system is Sirius, a direct, unbroken lineage of the Tibetan Wang. Sirius is much more powerful than Reiki, and is generally much less expensive.

candidate establishes his or her own linkage with higher consciousness through self-administered rites, the natural powersthat-be arrange for some valuable item to be taken away, either through loss or theft. There was an amusing document circulated, somewhere around 1989, that stated, "When you sign the Oath of a Probationer, your life will fall into ruin. Your bank account will be closed. You will lose your job. Your dog will die. Your mate will leave you." Et cetera. What makes this anecdote not amusing is that it is often true! The aspirant to spiritual enlightenment will find that they have to leave it all behind. The only things that are not removed are those possessions and concepts to which one has no attachment. Eventually everything, including the sense of self, must fade away in the final mystical experience. A common concept among many people is that no one should charge anything for spiritual teachings or services. This is because they want to get something for free, and it is a selfish, unreasonable expectation. Any teacher or group has the right to expect reasonable remuneration for their time and expenses. Teachers must maintain a residence, pay utility bills and eat. Groups must maintain a temple, pay utility bills, and (often) feed their students. The only question here is what is reasonable? Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, originally delivered his system in a single "attunement" for free. After a heart-wrenching experience, he discovered that recipients did not appreciate the procedure and made no use of the energy. He therefore resolved to charge a fee, the exact amount of which nobody seems to have remembered.
10

After his death, a subsequent Reiki practitioner divided the system into three degrees and assigned the following fee structure: First degree - $150. Second degree - $500. Third degree "Reiki Master" - $10,000! Traditional Reiki Masters still charge these same fees today. Other, more reasonable, practitioners will deliver the same attunements for around $60, $75, and $300. Alice Bailey, the well-known author, used to give free public lectures (circa 1930). She noted that attendance was not high and the audience appeared to be listless. So she started charging fiftycents per lecture. Attendance improved and the listeners appeared to be much more attentive. TRANSMISSION is the transfer of consciousness, knowledge and/or powers. The three types of transmission are: Oral, symbolic and direct. Oral transmission occurs through speaking and listening, or through writing and reading. Through the "Power of the Word," the brain translates these utterances into concepts and practical applications. Such ideas are transmitted through conversations, speeches, and books. Certain words of power, pronounced during ceremonies, have a similar, if not more potent, effect. Symbolic transmission takes place through emblems, symbols, icons, and works of art like statues, paintings, and talismans. Initiation ceremonies are composed of symbolic rites that usually include oral transmission, and (if genuine) contain a central act of direct transmission. Direct transmission may be enacted without words or symbols, although these may be synchronized with the transfer of consciousness. Sometimes, the delivery is from the eyes of the transmitter, for there are accounts of certain holy men whose glance (if they simply look at you) causes your consciousness to radically change. And sometimes the reception is through the eyes of the beholder (Darshan = "the act of viewing a holy man - or woman"). Initiation rituals (are supposed to) contain a central act of direct transmission. Although symbols may play a part, Empowerments are usually short and direct.
11

The Curriculum for the training of a magician is lengthy, complex, and can take the better part of a lifetime to complete. Of course, every school has its own agenda and thus the subjects may vary. But the genuine lineages all seem to agree on the major points. Beware of any school that teaches how its principles and curriculum are different from, and superior to, other schools of thought. The Outer Order is the world of the "outer" personality (including the physical body, the emotions, and the concrete mind). The Outer Order is composed of those men and women who have commenced walking the Path. They are usually associated with a group, an Order, a tribe, a circle, a dojo, a church, a temple, a lodge, or some other designation of the place where initiates get together to practice escaping from the Matrix. Unfortunately, Outer Orders are mostly places where people are just pretending to escape from the Matrix, while they are secretly running around doing Matrix-type stuff to their fellow initiates. It's all very confusing because hardly anybody's personality is properly aligned. Some schools have astutely perceived this tendency for a clash of egos and have moved to counter its effects by allowing aspirants to know only that person who first introduced them, plus any candidates that they themselves introduce after becoming initiate. In theory, this works nicely, but in practice there are almost always leaks of identities. Usually, there's no way around it. Most aspirants have to endure the trumpeting of the elephants, the booming of the bass drum, and the performance of the clowns as they make their way through the maze and the egos of the Outer Order. The Inner Order is the realm of the "concealed" person (the Soul). The Inner Order is composed of those men and women who have aligned their personas, and have passed through the veil of illusion to link with their own Solar essence. Although these adepts may be affiliated with the "inner circle" of a group, Order, tribe, dojo, church, temple, monastery or lodge, such membership is essentially meaningless, for the true definition of "Adept" is that of an individual who is linked to his or her own Soul or Solar Angel, and by virtue of that link, he or she is united through the Heart with all other adepts of the Inner Order. The part that most people don't understand is that, in terms of
12

consciousness, there is only One Inner Order. It is not a membership or a building. It is a network of worldwide consciousness that includes everyone who has passed beyond the Veil of Illusion. Anyone openly claiming in the marketplace to be a member of this Inner Order is to be examined carefully. The Supernal Order is the "higher" person (the Spirit or Monad). The Supernal Order is composed of those individuals who have erased their personal history. They have "crossed the Abyss" to become nothing more than a channel for their Monad. They are known to us as Masters. Among the Shamans of the Americas, the term Nagual is often used. It is generally thought that people who reach this rarified consciousness have destroyed their ego. This is both true and untrue, because Masters still have an ego and they still have personalities. Sometimes we don't like their personalities. It is usually better to judge them by their Work and to knock off the personality assessments. Only certain imperfections, the Adept's accidents or personal karma, have been burned off. The Master still has an ego, but it is an ego that offers no resistance to his or her higher nature. Beyond the Supernal Order, and more expanded than the levels of consciousness normally expounded by the revealers of Orders, grades and the Path, there are further realms of existence. These are sometimes vaguely referenced as the states that precede and encompass the Tree of Life. Or perhaps as the level of the Nirmankaya, the Adi - the domain of the Lord of the World, or the cosmic mental plane.

Chapter 2

The Instruments
As with magick itself, a magical weapon is any instrument used to bring about intentional change. With that said, in practice, magical weapons are usually specific, consecrated items used within ceremonial magic. There is no hard and fast rule for what is or isn't a magical weapon. Common weapons include the dagger, wand, holy oil, cup, disk, lamp, bell, and censer. - condensed from Wikipedia
MAGICAL INSTRUMENTS are the tools of the magician. They have also been called magical weapons and the armory. They are primarily used by the beginner and the moderately advanced Adept. Magicians operating in the higher realms ideally utilize nothing but spiritual-mental energy and may thus be said to have advanced beyond the use of magical toys. Every magical instrument must be initiated prior to allowing its entry into a magical circle. One simply follows the same procedures as prescribed for the initiation of a human candidate - wrapping in a black cloth, binding the cloth, charging it with an oath, etc. That is, it must be first be purified (banished - all inherent energies must be purged from the instrument - usually with distilled water or salt or salted water), then charged (the desired energy is invoked and/or evoked into the instrument), then consecrated (the instrument is anointed with the sacred oil).
15

Consecrated instruments should be kept wrapped in wool or silk that is colored according to the correspondence of the inherent energy. Wool and silk, being of animal origin, insulate the enclosed energy and prevent it from contamination or leakage. Numerology (the study of numbers) forms a great portion of the basis of the following discussion. The magician should be particularly familiar with the meaning and uses of the numbers from zero () to ten (10). see: THE SYMBOLOGY OF NUMBERS in the Appendix

The Temple THE TEMPLE is the structure wherein a magical ceremony takes place. It can actually be an ancient temple, or just a special room, a grand hall, a grass shack, a tent, a garage, a living room, or a chicken coop. Sometimes there is no walled structure because the use of a small valley or an open meadow has been selected. Especially suitable for magical purposes is a Power Center (if you can find one). A Power Center is a place that radiates natural energy. A Power Center is said to be ideally configured if it is surrounded by rock (either in a close circle or at a further distance by massive barrier walls) and has only a small or restricted entrance. But on the other hand, one of the most potent Power Centers known to man (The Oregon Vortex) iii has none of these qualities, except that it is surrounded by hills and it sits just off a narrow two-lane (paved) road. see: POWER CENTERS in the Appendix
16

If the Temple is done up in grand style, there will be many enhancements. Unless you want to repaint and redecorate for each working, the color of the walls and (any) curtains will be selected for general purposes. As an example, shades of beige representing stone or papyrus are particularly suitable for the walls, especially when contrasted with purple or maroon drapes.

Various Statues, Columns, Murals, Symbols, or Thangkas may enhance the environment, but only if suited for general workings. Specific workings require harmoniously attuned enhancements. The Tibetan word Than means "flat" and the suffix ka denotes a "painting." A Thangka is therefore a flatsurface painting that can be rolled up when not being displayed. It is also referred to as a "scrollpainting." In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Temple corresponds to the physical body of the magician wherein all the other processes take place. THE CIRCLE THANGKA DEPICTING MILAREPA iv THE CIRCLE is painted, inscribed, or laid out upon the floor. The magical circle is round, thus symbolizing completeness. This circle can be applied with paint or chalk. It can also be a round carpet that is rolled out upon the floor of the temple. It might even be a rope that is uncoiled to form the circle, or (in natural settings) one may simply inscribe it in the dirt with a stick.
17

Care should be taken to ensure that the circle is unbroken. Areas where paint did not adhere, chalk lines that are incomplete, or dirt-inscribed lines that are imperfect offer gaps in this protective device through which demons may enter the circle or through which magical energy may leak out. Some traditional pictures depicting a small circle that is three or four feet in diameter surrounding a magician are quaint, but unrealistic. For a single magician, the circle should be more like nine feet in diameter. For group workings, it should be enlarged accordingly. In expansive group rites, there have been circles that were one hundred feet across.

Traditionally, the circle is inscribed with the names of various deities whose designations offer protection. In the authors

that is, the orientation of levels of consciousness leads across the oval from one end to the other. The higher levels are traditionally oriented in the East, although other directions may be appropriate.
18

It is important that a magician never allows any part of himself or herself to extend beyond the edge of the circle, nor permits any magical instrument to do the same (see the exception under The Triangle, below). This may appear to be a quaint rule, but when a true higher force has been invoked, and spirits are gathered outside the perimeter, the breaking of the circle's integrity can be disastrous. On the other hand Then we all consumed the magickal libation, proceeding therefrom to the Banishing and the Invocation, leaving the circle opened and not closed in the magickal way. So we did that. And then we proceeded even further by taking our magickal circle with us in our automobiles over to the savants' "open house" meeting that was scheduled to begin in thirty minutes which we did. - Inside Solar Lodge v Now, sometimes, especially in long, drawn-out, group ceremonies, the kind that can go on for hours, a magician may need to perform natural functions. A minor rite for departing and reentering a circle has been developed, but do not be so foolish as to exercise it during actual invocation or evocation procedures: To leave a stabilized circle, stand just inside the perimeter, facing outward. Then trace a flaming pentagram in the air, project banishing energy through the center of that pentagram (pushing the pentagram further outward), and quickly step over the edge of the circle. This is the same as energetically pushing dogs (or people) away from a doorway so that you might pass through while forbidding them entry. To re-enter a stabilized circle, stand just outside the perimeter, facing inward. Then reach forward and up with one hand. As you sweep that hand down and along your side and then backward, say apo pontos kokai daimonos ("and save us from every demon"), or a similar phrase, and quickly step over the edge of the circle. This is the same as energetically pushing dogs (or people) back from a doorway through which you wish to pass while preventing them from following you. The number of designated points in a circle will vary with the nature of the intended operation ( see: The Symbology of Numbers in the Appendix). For general purposes, the number 4 can usually be used - that is, four small pentagrams are inscribed upon the
19

circle in the four cardinal directions. Upon these pentagrams stand four small lamps or candles. "Glow-sticks" are particularly suitable for outdoor ceremonies (especially when there is wind) - they are designed to be internally broken in order to release and mix preinstalled chemicals that will then provide a "glow" for eight to twelve hours. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Circle corresponds to the energy field, or aura, of the magician wherein all energies are radiated. The Altar THE ALTAR is placed in placed in the center of the circle. Ideally it is a double cube, with one cube placed on top of another. Each cube is about two feet on each side, making the Altar (more or less) four feet high. Ideally the Altar is made of wood, although other materials may be suitable. Sometimes one may simply use a large rock, a nightstand or a double-cube sized television cabinet. The Altar, being of rigid, squared dimensions, symbolizes the basic, solid principles that govern creation, and it is the foundation upon which the magician works. It should have access doors to the interior, and perhaps a drawer or two, inside of which the other consecrated instruments are stored when not in use. In a perfect magical world, the magician would select a fine acacia or oak tree, chop it down with a magical axe, and cut the trunk into boards that are then sanded and polished. The boards would then be fitted into place and held together with iron nails or screws, or glued with wooden dowels. The exact height of the finished Altar would be equal to the distance of the magician's navel from the floor. Acacia is used symbolically in Freemasonry to represent purity and endurance of the soul, and as funeral symbolism implying resurrection and immortality. The bark, root and resin are used to make incense for rituals. Smoke from acacia bark is thought to keep demons and ghosts away and to put gods in a good mood. Humans and elephants enjoy an alcoholic beverage made from its fruit.
20

In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Altar corresponds to the skeleton of the magician whereupon all life and movement is supported.

using wool or silk thread, or perhaps gold or silver wire extracted from the magician's mines. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Altar Cloth represents the periosteum that covers and protects the skeletal bones of the magician.

The Book THE SACRED BOOK is the text most revered by the magician. This book contains the magical, philosophical, or moral precepts upon which the magician bases his or her general workings. This might be a Bible (which merely means "book" - a text most magicians who have been subjected to the Inquisition will probably not select), the Koran, The Book of the Law, The I Ching, etc., or a text delivered directly to the magician by his or her Solar Angel.
21

This text will set forth the basic moral, ethical, and philosophical principles that the magician has chosen to rule his or her operations and, in fact, his or her life. This Sacred Book may remain out of sight within the confines of the Altar, unless otherwise directly involved in any actual magical working, for the magician will certainly have already memorized its entire contents. In a perfect magical world, the magician would possess a Sacred Book written in or her own script with a magical pen upon fine linen or papyrus made by hand. It could be copied from another established text or it might be written directly by dictation from a higher being. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Sacred Book represents the central nervous system that determines basic consciousness and primary reactive responses.

that the advanced magician design his or her own ceremony - the use of a previously published grimoire (grammar), book of spells, or similar text would be ridiculous. However, in order to practice, the beginner must usually rely upon previously published rites. In group workings, copies of this Book (which realistically might only be a collection of typed pages) would be held by each participant - so that everyone is on the same page, so to speak. This Book can be eliminated if the magician, or the group, has completely memorized all the details set forth therein. This is in fact a requirement in Freemasonry, wherein all participants have been made to commit their rites to memory, for the writing down of the rituals is forbidden (see Masonic Rituals on the wild world web, or in books written by heretic, renegade masons). In our perfect magical world, the magician(s) would utilize a Book of Rites constructed and written down in the same manner as prescribed for a Sacred Book. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Book of Rites represents the peripheral nervous system that determines ritualistic consciousness and delivery of specific motor actions.
22

THE MAGICAL RECORD is another book, the third type to be considered. This is used for writing down the procedures used and the results obtained therefrom. It should include the date, the time, the prevailing conditions (temperature, wind conditions, etc.), the practice(s) that were performed, any phenomena observed, and the results. The modern New Age term for this Record is a Journal. This Magical Record is often valuable at a later date, when the details have faded from memory (in sometimes only two or three days). In our perfect magical world, the magician would utilize a Record constructed and written down in the same manner as prescribed for a Sacred Book. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Record represents the memory that is preserved in certain brain cells of the magician. Heavy Metal THE DISK is a circular piece of metal, preferably cast of solid gold. Ideally, it is nine inches in diameter and about one-half of an inch in thickness. The Disk is also called a Pantacle, a Pentacle, or (rarely) a Coin. The Disk is the elemental instrument of Earth. It is usually placed in the center of the Altar top. It represents the basic principles that the magician has selected to govern his or her general work. It is inscribed (by using the magical dagger) with a geometrical map of the levels of consciousness as expressed in the unique design (formula) that the magician will use in performing the Great Work, plus any symbols (letters or graphics) that help to further define the scheme.
23

It is of vital importance that the design be perfectly balanced in a concentric arrangement. The most common mistake made by neophytes is arranging the design in a non-concentric manner so that it appears as a vertical picture - this is appropriate for a Lamen, but not for a Disk. Basic arrangements in the design usually include four (+/-) concentric symbols. In the center is a dot or an eye, or some similar glyph that represents unity. The next two levels proclaim the operative blueprint, often being the 3=8, 4=7, or 5=6 formula. Some magicians expand into three levels with a (for example) 5=7=11 formula. Anything will work as long as it is balanced, meaningful and workable.

In the perfect magical world to which we constantly refer, the magician would find and operate a gold mine, extracting a rather large portion of pure gold. This would then be cast into a Disk of proper dimensions, and would be worth a small (maybe a large) fortune.
24

This Disk would then be highly polished, and the design will be inscribed thereon. After purifying, charging, and consecrating the Disk, (however it is made) it should be kept wrapped in green or earth-toned silk or wool. In the "real" magical world in which most of us live, we find that we must usually rely somewhat on spirits of acquisition and salesman to help us out. First of all, this amount of gold is prohibitively expensive - thus we may accept brass as a substitute. Perhaps you could find a brass disk already punched out from sheet metal in a metal warehouse. This is exactly what was found in the mid-1960s. They were eleven inches in diameter, about an eighth of an inch thick, were perfectly round, and had a smooth surface that was easily polished. But we have never seen the likes of them since that time. Thus, in later times, machine-shop demons were evoked. Here is how you do it: Go to a metal shop-supply house. Find a brass plate that is between one-eighth of an inch (1/8") and one-half of an inch (1/2") in thickness. Have the machinist cut it with his metal-cutting bandsaw into the diameter of your choice - probably between four inches and eleven inches. The perimeter will probably be rough with band-saw marks and must be extensively polished (see below), while the flat surface will usually be relatively smooth and will polish much more easily. Or ... Find a round brass bar that is between four inches (4") and six inches (6") in diameter. Brass bars usually don't come any wider. Have the machinist cut it with his metal-cutting band-saw into the thickness of your choice - probably between one-fourth of an inch (1/4") and one-half of an inch (1/2"). The flat surfaces will be rough with band-saw marks and must be extensively polished (see below), while the perimeter will probably be relatively smooth and will polish much more easily. Regardless of which style you select (plate or bar), polishing will be required. Obtain an electric drill and a rubber disk "backing pad" attachment that is used by automobile body-repair persons (see your local auto parts store), or just use a "disc sander."
25

With contact cement, glue the Disk directly to the rubber backing pad - make certain it is perfectly centered or it will take a lot of extra revolutions to get the Disk perfectly rounded. Rotate the Disk (with the electric drill or disc sander) while placing the edge of the Disk against a flat concrete surface or a metal file. Brass is soft and it will soon be ground down to form a perfect (but rough) circle. Then do the same thing again, but this time place the surface of the Disk against a (very flat) concrete surface. It will soon be ground down to a flat (but rough) surface. Obviously, if the Disk already has a relatively smooth edge or surface, you can skip the concrete/file stage and proceed to finer polishing. Now that the Disk is rounded and flat, you must polish it in stages using various mediums. This is the sequence: 1. Rotating the Disk that is still glued to the rubber backing pad,

polishing pad (which is usually included) over the auto body-repair backing pad. Rotate this cloth pad directly on the Disk while applying the following abrasives (which are mixed with water): (1) Pumice, (2) Zinc Oxide or powdered Chalk or other fine polishing abrasive, (3) Brasso - a commercial brass polish [add no water]. Do this on both surfaces and the edge of the Disk. At any stage, scratches or imperfections may be observed and must be removed by returning to an earlier stage. You should end up with a brilliant, shining Disk that looks just like gold. As time goes by, the shiny brass will oxidize and become dull this is remedied by getting out the can of Brasso and a soft cloth, but now the polishing can simply be performed quickly and efficiently by hand. The design is probably best inscribed with a rotary engraving tool. Take care - one slip of the tool means regrinding and polishing
26

again in order to restore a smooth surface. Now that's a lot of work! The Disk will probably be the hardest instrument to build in a proper manner. For the warrior-priest-knight, the Disk is a representation of the shield.

THE DISK DESIGN OF FRATER ACHAD circa 1911 vi

In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Disk represents the muscular system of the magician that makes terrestrial motion and activity possible.

The Holy Grail THE CUP is a drinking vessel made of silver. It is also called a chalice, or sometimes (when the new age aspirant is starry-eyed) a grail. Ideally, the cup is six to nine inches in height. This describes the modern version - older versions consisted of simple wooden bowls (perhaps a bit too primitive today). There are also suggestions of bowl-shaped vessels carved from a single, large emerald or a chunk of moldavite (a 50,000-year old, extra27

terrestrial, energetic, fragmented meteorite found only in Czechoslovakia, but sold all over the world). The Cup is at its is best when simple and without excessive ornamentation. It should ideally bear no inscriptions or engraved designs, except as noted below. The Cup is the elemental instrument of Water. It is conveniently placed anywhere on the Altar. It represents the receptive nature that the magician employs during invocation. The Cup is inscribed with a number, uniquely chosen by the magician to represent the emblem or character that he or she will use in performing the Great Work. Any additional designs or artwork are superfluous and serve only to confuse the simplicity of the number. The number should correspond and integrate with the design on the Disk and the word of power on the sword. See integration further on in this Essay. In the magical world, the magician would, of course, find and operate a silver mine, extracting a portion of pure silver. This would then be melted and cast into a Cup of proper dimensions. This Cup would then be highly polished in a manner similar to that of the Disk, and the number would be inscribed thereon. After purifying, charging, and consecrating the Cup, (however it is made) it should be kept wrapped in blue silk or wool. In our "realistic" world, we find that we will rely on salesman or websites to help us out. Thus we may accept a commercially manufactured Cup as a substitute. You can often find a silver Cup, already manufactured and polished, at shopping centers and pawn shops. Avoid cheap, plastic cups, cups designed for trophies, and cups with handles, fancy designs or inscriptions. An appropriate emblem or hallmark may already be in place, and this is acceptable as long as the design is harmoniously compatible with the Disk design and the number on the Cup. Gaudy gems glued onto the instrument make it unacceptable. Plain, simple, shiny silver - these are keywords to guide your purchase. A Cup that is merely silver-plated is possibly the best that you can achieve. The number is best inscribed with an engraving tool. Again, be careful, for a major slip of the tool means wiping out the Cup as regrinding and polishing again are often not possible, especially if the Cup is merely silver-plated.
28

It is acceptable to obtain a Cup that has been previously owned, but avoid one that has been used for magical purposes. A new one is best. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Cup represents the receptive higher mind of the magician that receives inspiration, insight and information from above. Getting to the Point THE MAGICAL SWORD is usually a Dagger made of steel, with a handle of wood. Ideally, the blade is nine or eleven inches in length. This is beyond the usual "six-inch" maximum length allowed in most locales when defining a "concealed weapon." Magicians are therefore advised not to carry full-length magical daggers (or big-ego swords) in a concealed manner, lest they come into conflict with the Establishment. The Dagger should always be straight and two-edged, showing that it is balanced, right to the point, and can "cut both ways." Curved blades are to be avoided as they denote an indirect energy, and those fancy, wiggly, serpentine blades are an abomination for the same reason. The Sword is the elemental instrument of Air. It is worn on the side of the waist or hip of the magician, or it can be conveniently placed anywhere on the Altar. If it is a dagger, it can be concealed within a sleeve of the magical robe. It represents the mental tools (the intellect) that the magician uses to control his or her work. The blade is inscribed with a word of power, uniquely chosen by the magician to represent the formula he or she will use in performing the Great Work. Any additional designs or artwork are superfluous and serve only to confuse the simplicity of the word. The word should correspond to, and integrate with, the number on the Cup and the design on the Disk. We will examine this corresponding and integration concept further on in this Essay. In ceremonial usage, the Dagger is always aimed horizontally outward or angled downward. It is never pointed upward at an angle.
29

As the Dagger symbolizes the mental, analytical apparatus, it may be aimed at the world around and beneath the magician, but to apply it to (analyze) superior realms would be a mistake, resulting in asking "why?" and "breaking down" (analyzing) the spiritual input coming from above. The only exception to this principle is when the dagger is pointed straight up, implying that the mind is aligned, clear, and poised to receive energy from higher consciousness. In the magical world, the magician would ideally find and operate an iron mine, extracting a portion of pure iron. This would then be smelted and forged into a blade of proper dimensions. This Dagger would then be highly polished in a manner similar to that of the Disk, and the word of power would be inscribed thereon. After purifying, charging, and consecrating the Dagger, it should be kept wrapped in yellow silk or wool. The finest dagger that the author ever saw was made by Frater Shem, who, in the external world, was an engineer, a mechanic, and a dentist. He obtained a large, tempered-steel file, which he ground into shape and polished. A brass hilt and a wooden handle were then attached. It had an overall length of about fourteen inches and was razor sharp. In the more "realistic" world in which we live, we find that we will again probably rely on salesman or websites to help us out. Thus we might accept a commercial steel dagger as a substitute. One can easily find a double-edged, skin-diving knife, or a warlike, military dagger, already manufactured and polished at sporting goods stores or in weapons catalogs. Just avoid cheap, plastic handles, fancy designs and inscriptions, curved blades, and gaudy gems glued into the hilt or grip. Plain, simple, strong, efficient - these are the keywords that should guide your purchase. It is probably best to not adopt a dagger that has been previously used for any purpose - get a new one! The word of power is best inscribed with an engraving tool. Again, take care, for a slip of the tool means regrinding and polishing in order to restore a smooth surface. The word might be in Greek, Hebrew, English, or any suitable alphabet. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Dagger represents the analytical, intellectual mind of the magician that makes it possible to analyze (divide or break down) complex issues.
30

Thunderstick THE WAND is an instrument of power made from a hollow copper tube. It is also called a staff, a rod, a blasting rod, or (when the aspirant is of a military or a musical nature) a baton. Ideally, the Wand is nine or eleven inches in length. This describes the modern version - older versions consisted of simple wooden sticks cut from an oak, acacia, or some specific tree with a magical sword on the day of the Spring Equinox. The Wand is most functional when it is hollow and without excessive ornamentation. It should bear no inscriptions or engraved designs. A Wand is ideally hollow because it is a conductor of fiery energy. Once upon a time, the author, Frater Shiva, obtained a piece of copper tubing that was nine inches long and one-half of an inch in diameter. A cap, designed in the shape of triple tongues of fire, was cast from solid gold and fitted over one end of the hollow tube. The tube was then filled with mercury (quicksilver) and a cap for the other end of the tube was cast in gold in the shape of a coiled serpent. The caps were sealed in place with epoxy cement, thus preventing the mercury from seeping out. It was very heavy, rather compact, and packed a real wallop ! The Wand is the elemental instrument of Fire. It is conveniently placed anywhere on the Altar or held in the magician's hand. It can also be retained in a pouch or pocket that is sewn inside a sleeve of the magician's robe. It represents the fiery will that the magician employs during the evocation of spirits. The Wand is endowed with a deed (an act or a ritual, which is of course, first written down upon papyrus), uniquely designed by the magician so that the Wand is utilized therein. Any additional designs or artwork are superfluous and serve only to confuse the simplicity of the conduction of energy. The deed should correspond and integrate with the design on the Disk, the number on the Cup, and the word of power on the Sword. See integration further on in this Essay.

Another version of the Wand is the Tibetan dorje (thunderbolt).

Numerous fairy, elfin, and sorcerer wands are available from internet-based, and storefront-based, occult supply shops. These often have serpentine wires wrapped around a piece of wood, metal, or crystal, with various gemstones and/or synthetic imitation "stones" or crystals set haphazardly about the wand. These are generally gaudy, repulsive creations that should be avoided by all means. Some of the designs are simple, sleek, and approach the ideal. But a real magician will simply make his or her own wand. The use of a (single) high quality crystal, set in the end of a Wand, is not prohibited, and may in fact enhance the power. In the magical world, the magician would find and operate a copper mine, extracting a portion of pure copper. This would then be smelted and cast into a hollow (preferred) or solid Wand of proper dimensions. This Wand would then be highly polished in a manner similar to that of the Disk, and the deed (the ritual) would be designed. After purifying, charging, and consecrating the Wand, the deed would be performed, and thereafter the Wand should be kept wrapped in red silk or wool. In our "realistic" world, we find that we will probably rely on building supply center spirits to help us out. Thus we may accept a commercially manufactured copper tube or bar as a substitute. You can find copper pipe, already manufactured and semi-polished, at plumbing supply shops. Obtain a length of the straight, hard copper pipe, and forget the rolled-up, soft copper tubing. Avoid buying pre-manufactured wands from occult shops. Fire symbols and emblems may be incorporated into the Wand, as long as they are aligned in a balanced manner. Gaudy gems glued onto the instrument should simply be unacceptable.
32

Plain, simple, direct, powerful - these keywords guide your creation of a suitable Wand. It is not acceptable to obtain a Wand that has been previously used. Now who knows where that has been? In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Wand represents the reproductive organs of the magician that makes it possible to create new vistas and scenarios. Integration THE INTEGRATION of the Elements has been repeatedly mentioned above.

"The deed should correspond and integrate with the design on the Disk, the word of power on the Sword, and the number on the Cup."
Let us view an example of integration: A Disk bears a design consisting of a dot (point) in its center, which is also the center of a four-armed, equilateral cross. The cross is surrounded by a septagram (a sevenpointed star) that is further surrounded (just inside the perimeter of the Disk) by a serpent who is eating his tail. This typifies the 4=7 ratio. The full design could be designated as 1=4=7=. A corresponding Sword might bear the word of power "ADZ" or "ADZ" or "" or " " (these are the Greek letters).

Note that 1=A, 4=D, 7=Z, and Zero =

33

Elements (4) are evoked (using the Wand), and everything is symbolically drawn into a unified point by lighting the overhead central Lamp (1). The full deed could be designated as =7=4=1. Thus the design, name, number, and deed are correlated, synchronized, and integrated into a unified whole.

Light of the World THE LAMP is special. Woe be unto the magician who is content to allow a simple candle to suffice - although, at times, that really can be an acceptable substitute.
34

The Lamp is ideally a bowl carved from a large ruby, emerald or diamond. It is suspended from the ceiling by one or three golden chains. It is filled with oil upon the surface of which is a floating wick. The Lamp is the elemental instrument of Aethyr or Spirit, the great space and electromagnetic field in which the four elements manifest. It is suspended directly over the Altar in the center of the Circle. It represents the spiritual source of all the other instruments, as well as the goal towards which the magician is working. Now there are references to a Lamp that burns without wick or oil, being fed directly by the Aethyr itself. If you happen to actually accomplish this feat in the dense physical realm, then you should probably apply to the Patent Office. Perhaps an approximation of this task could be performed by linking a solar panel to a battery, which in turn causes illumination to radiate from a small light bulb. In a more serious vein, what is implied here is a source of Light within the being of the magician. It is called The Light in the Head and it corresponds to the interaction of the Crown and Brow chakras. Physiologically, it is the interface between the radiating energies of the pineal and the pituitary glands. The oil placed in the Lamp-bowl should be light and of pleasing odor. Kerosene and sticky, thick, rancid oils need not apply. In our "realistic" world, we find that we will rely on home furnishing departments or thrift stores to help us. We may accept a commercially manufactured glass lamp, or a glass bowl, as a substitute. Plain, simple, translucent - these are keywords to guide your acquisition. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Lamp represents the Light in the Head of the magician that is consciousness itself.
35

Dressed in Style THE ROBE is worn by the magician, and no other garments should be worn underneath. It is traditionally black in color for it is intended to conceal the practitioner, and a hood is attached. It also insulates and protects the magician. A probationer (one who has not yet been initiated into the first degree) traditionally wears a white robe, consistent with the process of purification, and there is no hood. The shape or "cut" of the robe is that of the Tau (the Greek letter "T"). The sleeves and hem widen out, signifying that the central energy of the magician expands and radiates outward. With the magician's head on top of the "T," we are reminded of the ancient Egyptian Ankh Magicians are advised to not wear their Robe in public, nor to costume parties, nor to scare little children on Halloween. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Robe represents the Skin of the magician that protects the inner structures.

The Sound of Silence THE BELL is struck at the beginning (opening) and at the end (closing) of ceremonies, and at specific times within a rite.
36

to loop around the magician's waist, outside the robe, thus keeping the Bell and striker handy for use. Otherwise, it is conveniently placed upon the altar. The Bell is used to announce magical workings. Even though it emits a sound, it calls for attention and silence. A genuine magical Bell is made of Electrum Magicum, that is, an alloy of the seven sacred metals:

Take ten portions of gold, ten of silver, five of copper, two of tin, two of lead, one of powdered iron, and five of mercury. These metals must all be pure. When the planets Saturn and Mercury come into conjunction, have fire, a crucible, the mercury and the lead at hand so that the work can be performed during the moments of the conjunction. At that time, melt the lead and add the mercury, and let it cool. Then wait for a conjunction of Jupiter with Saturn and Mercury, melt the lead and mercury alloy in the crucible, and melt the tin in another crucible - pour the two metals together at the moment of the conjunction. Then wait until a conjunction of the Sun and either one or both of the above named planets add the gold to the compound after previously melting it. At a conjunction of the Moon and the Sun, Saturn or Mercury, the silver is likewise added. At a conjunction of Venus with one of the above named planets, the copper is added. Finally, at a conjunction with Mars, the alloy is melted and completed with the addition of the powdered iron. Stir the molten mass with a dry rod of hard wood, and pour it into a previously prepared, bellshaped mold and let it cool. The Bell can then be polished.
Caution - mercury and lead fumes are highly poisonous !
37

On the other hand, you might wish to purchase a ready-made Bell. The Tibetans offer Bells in various sizes and shapes, made from a variety of alloys. Some even claim to be made of Electrum. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Bell represents the Sense of Hearing of the magician. It is also the mental ability to come into a point, otherwise known as a fullyfocused moment of concentration.

Marching to the Beat of a Single Drummer THE DRUM is, of course, a Drum, but may include any instrument or device that furnishes a rhythmic auditory background for a ceremony. This sound effect is optional and is often omitted. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Drum represents the Heartbeat of the magician.

Fire in the Hole THE CENSER is also known as a thurible or a caldron. It is made of brass, iron, or some similar metal. It should stand on three legs, for if it is flat on the bottom, excessive heat may be conducted through to the altar cloth or the altar itself. Some shamans use an Abalone shell.
38

A fire is built within the Censer, either with sticks (for short rituals) or with charcoal (for longer ceremonies). Sometimes the fire is difficult to ignite and a

However, serious rites require a healthy furnace as papers are often burned and sometimes talismans and links are incinerated (in order to set them in motion). If burned, these items must be ignited and reduced completely to the status of a fine ash. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Censer represents the Life Force of the magician, and can be equated with the Oriental medicine concept of Kidney Yang.

Ignition THE FIRE refers to the source of the Fire that is used to ignite the Fuel in the Censer, any Candles, sticks of Incense, and the magical

39

In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Fire represents the Source of the Life Force of the magician and can be equated with the Oriental medicine term Yuan ("source") Qi. It actually comes from the core of the Earth, and iy also corresponds with the source of the fiery Kundalini. Where there's Fire - There's Smoke! THE INCENSE may be wood chips, sticks, powders, oils, or resins. Incense produces a background scent that should correspond with the deity who will be evoked. The incense is the symbolic sacrifice, the fee that is paid in order to produce magical results. Do not hedge on the quality or the cost. Inexpensive incense is suitable only for bathroom purposes. Ideally, drops of solid resin are placed upon the glowing embers that are contained within the Censer. One particularly pleasant background scent, used in stick form prior to a ceremony, is a combination of sandalwood and rose. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Incense represents the function of Metabolism of the magician. In terms of awareness, it corresponds with Aspiration and Sacrifice.

Oil and Water don't Mix THE OIL, also known as the Sacred Oil or the Holy Oil, is blended and kept in a stoppered or capped vial. Cork is not suitable as a stopper or a cap, for it is porous and will allow the volatile essences of the oil to evaporate. The Oil is used to anoint or consecrate all of the other instruments (and even the magician).
40

This is another item that a serious magician will avoid purchasing from the Choronzon and the Seven Dwarfs Occult Book and Supply Shop. The individual oils which will be included should be obtained separately and singularly purified before blending into the final mixture. Beware of "watered-down" oils that are merely an inexpensive base oil to which only a few drops of pure oil have been added. Other "counterfeit" versions are called "synthetic" oils, although they may be the best that you can find that fit your budget. The pure products are called essential oils. Some essential oils are very expensive, but you usually need only the smallest amount of each. Most incense can also be obtained in an oil format. The exact number, derivation, and ratios of individual oils may vary according by referring to the Tables of Correspondence and his or her preferences that result therefrom. Three or four separate constituents are normally sufficient. A full-spectrum, Tree of Life blend (all ten spheres) might include:

Ten parts (drops) Dittany of Crete, nine parts Jasmine, eight parts Storax, seven parts Rose, six parts Frankincense, five parts Dragon's Blood, four parts Cedar, three parts Myrrh, two parts Musk, one part Sandalwood.
Each oil, in it's own vial, must be magically purified, charged, and consecrated. Then the "parts" (drops) are ceremonially added, in turn, to the single vial that will contain the final blend. Use sparingly. A tiny drop is sufficient for consecration. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Oil represents the Endocrine System of the magician, specifically growth hormone. In terms of awareness, it corresponds with Inspiration. Circumferential Support THE BELT may be made of leather, fabric webbing, heavy or light metallic chain, heavy cord or rope. Many magicians prefer to not use a Belt, in order to allow a free flow of energy throughout the Robe.
41

The Belt attaches various instruments to the waist of the magician, especially the dagger, the bell with its striker, and perhaps a small bag (purse) to carry medicine and power objects. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Belt represents the connective tissue of the magician.

The Badge of Identity THE LAMEN is a Seal or Coat-of-Arms that identifies the magician and his or her aspirations. It should correspond with the design on the disk, the word of power on the dagger, the number on the cup, and the deed associated with the wand. But it should be kept simple, using ascending or descending symbols that vertically portray the individual's approach to the Great Work. The Lamen may be made of metal, wood or fabric. It may be hung around the neck, embroidered on the robe, or made into a Seal for embedding into soft wax or imprinting onto magical stationary or esoteric documents. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Lamen represents the pericardium of the magician. In terms of awareness, it corresponds with the Magical Identity. Carry a Big Wand but Tread Softly THE SANDALS are worn upon the feet. Magical Sandals are for use in ceremonial rites and should not be worn when shopping or attending social functions.
42

The traditional design includes straps that are used to secure the Sandals to the feet and ankles, which are shaped like an Ankh. In fact, the Egyptian word Ankh means "a sandal strap." The soles should be of leather. Rubber or plastic soles should be avoided as they "insulate" the magician from the Earth, and he or she needs to remain "grounded" at all times. Grounded means alert, practical and firmly-established . Not grounded implies floating, wavering thoughts, and is typified by the colloquial appellation, "space cadet." The Sandals protect the feet and are not necessarily required for indoor rites, as many practitioners prefer to work barefooted. However, unless one has well-conditioned feet, Sandals are recommended for outdoor rites. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Sandals represent the soles of the feet of the magician. In terms of awareness, they correspond with the ability to go and to remain grounded. Three Corners to Contain a Spirit

THE TRIANGLE of Evocation is placed just outside the magical circle and is inscribed in a manner similar to that of the circle. It is designated as the place wherein a spirit (or demon) is evoked. Some Triangles are formed with the apex pointing away from the circle, while others are aimed toward the circle. The three corners are often inscribed with pentagrams upon which burn three small censers, lamps, candles, glow-sticks, or incense-sticks.
43

A dense smoke cloud arising from incense is particularly suitable for providing a medium in which a spirit may condense or appear, thus bringing it into full, physical manifestation and into the sight of the magician. After a spirit has been evoked, it is traditional to command the demon to place his hand upon an instrument or a talisman in order to impress it with his energy, or to signify that he will comply with the terms of the "charge" (the magician's bidding or instructions).

This can be somewhat dangerous as the magician is now required to extend his arm outside of the circle and into the Triangle - During this procedure, it is vitally important that the practitioner radiate energy out from his or her exposed arm. Any absorption of energy (an inflow of energy from the triangle or the spirit) may result in physical damage, emotional possession, or mental obsession. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Triangle

silver or gold), or paper. The traditional format is true papyrus or parchment.

44

Parchment is nothing more than the prepared skin of some poor animal, like a sheep, goat, calf, etc. Vellum is simply the name for a fine grade of parchment. Paper-makers also manufacture paper sheets that simulate parchment or papyrus. Digital printers can print parchment or papyrus backrounds. Various symbols, sigils, or letters are written on the Talisman (or engraved if the object is metallic), and these indicate the nature of the energy - that is, what the talismanic energy is, or is intended to accomplish. A magical pen, preferably the old style that must be dipped into ink, is desirable and it should only be used for talismanic purposes. Traditionally, India Ink (called Indian Ink in Great Britain) is used for paper or parchment.

India ink was first invented, in the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, by Neolithic cultures in China. The source of materials to make the carbon pigment was later traded from India, thus the term India ink. The traditional Chinese method of making the ink was to grind a mixture of wet animal hide glue, carbon black (charcoal), lampblack (soot), and bone black pigment (char bone), with a mortar and pestle. The manufacture of India ink was well-established by the Cao Wei dynasty, 220-265 AD. - condensed from Wikipedia
Potent Talismans are often written in the E N O C H I A N (Enochian) alphabet. These characters were delivered to John Dee (1527-1609) by the same angels who were said to have communicated with the biblical Enoch. Take care! Enochian magic and talismans (of any variety) are perhaps the most powerful forms of wizardry available, and they commonly display bizarre, negative side-effects. Here's what one looks like:

This one shouldnt cause much trouble because it is simply the well-known TARO-ROTA square

45

Both the Reiki and the Tibetan Sirius empowerment systems offer Level 2 training that includes the art of designing a talisman for long-distance healing and the art of manifestation. Interestingly, these simple talismans seem to work just as well as the somewhat dangerous Enochian variety, and they also appear to be free of negative side effects - this is probably due to the fact that the evocation of demons is not involved. Sometimes, a Talisman is made, inscribed, activated, and then burned in the Censer in order to "set it in motion." In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Talisman represents the hands and fingers of the magician. That is, the means of performing selective, specific tasks. Liberation THE LIBATION is a substance that is defined as a drink, offering, sacrifice or oblation. It is also a ritual pouring of a drink as an offering to a god or a deceased person. It was common in the religions of antiquity. Another interpretation is an act or instance of drinking and includes the substance which is consumed. The contemporary meaning here is getting drunk with an alcoholic beverage and the beverage itself. Magically speaking, a Libation is a substance that frees the consciousness of the magician so that he or she can communicate with his or her god (who otherwise might be too far removed for a chat). After all, the root lib- forms the basis of words like liberty and liberation. Native American cultures refer to Libations as Power Plants
46

Power Plants POWER PLANTS are naturally-occurring herbs that can (under certain circumstances) loosen and/or shift the Assemblage Point. The Assemblage Point is the place where consciousness is locked in place and firmly anchored. It cannot be moved except by magical means - or perhaps by a sharp blow to the head.

Power Plants include Rye-ergot, Morning Glory seeds, Lophophora Williamsii (Peyote cactus), assorted specific Mushrooms, Ayahuasca (Amazonian vine) plus psilocybin shrubs, bufo-toads, and Cannabis Indica or Sativa (in large doses). Psychotropic Drugs are synthetic pharmaceutical chemicals that are made in a laboratory, usually copying or enhancing the psychedelic chemical structure of extracts from power plants - they are highly concentrated and will easily loosen an Assemblage Point. These include LSD-25, Mescaline, Psilocybin, and many modern, legal, research chemicals.. Power Plants and their derivatives have been used recently, and for aeons past, by (in alphabetical order): adepts, hippies, Indians, initiates, lamas, magicians, oracles, psychologists, seers, shamans, warriors and yogis in every culture from every time anyone can think of or name. Coruscatio The Magical Cactus Voice vii
Some schools of thought state that Power Plants will rush your development and ruin your efforts through premature exposure to cosmic fire. Other schools of thought state that Power Plants will not harm you at all. It all being a lie, this foolish notion of harm against oneself.
This information on Power Plants has been presented as a public service. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and no claims of diagnosis, treatment, or cure of any condition is intended or implied. You are the final judge.

47

Coronation THE CROWN is, of course, worn upon the head. But let's not get carried away and assume that this will be some elaborate affair similar to that worn by the King or Queen of England. The most common form used by the ceremonial magician is that of the Ancient Aegyptian Nemyss, which can be made up from a square piece of striped cloth and perhaps held in placed with a band of metal that curves around the upper forehead. Some magicians, who are affiliated with mysteries that derive from Hindu or Arabic lineages, prefer to wear a turban. The Crown represents the Accomplish-

Making the Connection THE LINK is an item that represents (or comes from or is associated with) the end result. A Link must have some energetic connection with the situation, person(s) or object that is to be influenced. The Link can be merely touched with a charged talisman or with the wand, or activating symbols can be traced over it.
48

Examples of links include (but are not limited to) articles of clothing or jewelry, business cards, or even the written name of a person or a political body. The best link would be something coming directly from the person to be influenced, like clipped fingernails, a lock of their hair or (as preferred by shamans and black magicians everywhere) a drop of their blood. In terms of magical anatomy and physiology, the Link represents nothing of the magician, for it is an external object.

When you don't have Time to Open the Machine Shop THE IMPROMPTU INSTRUMENTS include everything listed above. The text of this Essay, so far, has included words like must, should and traditionally, but none of these imperatives are inescapable. For one thing, some people are not mechanically inclined. Other folks may have budgetary restraints. And there are individuals who simply are not in a position to have magical doo-dads lying around.

This is exactly the approach that was taken by the author in his first major ceremony of self-initiation [0=0 ] in 1964.
49

A small circle of eighteen inches in diameter was set up on an end table. Most of the instruments were miniatures. In the center, a tiny brass incense burner (the censer) sat upon a large coin (the disk). A charcoal incense block rested in the censer. A blue dental dappen dish served as the cup. A small candle was the lamp. Eleven smaller birthday candles were set equidistant around the perimeter of the circle. It was a series of tiny items, but there were a few fullsized items: the dagger, the matchsticks, the kimonostyle robe, and the straw hat that served as a crown. A banishing was performed around the end-table altar, and the Invocation of Thoth was carried out facing east in front of the miniature temple. Then, the Oath of a Probationer (AA) was signed and an appeal sent forth unto the secret chiefs of the Order, begging admission to the ordeal of probation.

Exactly one year later, the Neophyte ceremony was bestowed, and not as an act of self-initiation.
From another viewpoint, let's imagine that you are visiting magically-inclined friends and you determine that the time is right to perform a ceremony. But you have brought no instruments and your friends have neither temple nor tools. So ... You arrange the furniture in the living room around a circular rug. An end table is used as the altar, candles make up the lamps for the circle and the magical Lamp itself. A trip through the kitchen finds the elemental weapons (plate, knife, goblet, and a three-pronged, wooden salad-fork for a wand). A metal ashtray makes a fine censer, cedar shavings provide incense, and multicolored bathrobes are worn. The libation, of course, needs to be the genuine article. This can be informative, effective, and fun, but don't get carried away! Impromptu rites are the exception, not the everyday rule. You are still expected to do things the right way in your search for Truth, Justice, and the Magical Way.

50

The Final Power of the Sphynx SILENCE is the final secret - one that is often neglected. After all the preparation, purification, consecration, invocation, evocation, and settingin-motion through talisman and link, it is absolutely necessary to ... Let it go! If the final result is "hung onto," then how can the spirits go out and influence that happy ending? Thus, there is a certain detachment that must take place as soon as the energy has been set in motion, and this letting go of any result should take place even before the closing of the ceremony. This is one reason why talismans, and even links, are often burned.

have directed you to bring more harmony into your life and your workplace. Consulting the Tables of Correspondence (which surely, you have already committed to memory), you look up "Harmony" and find that HARMONY is a quality of the Sphere of the Sun.

The corresponding Aegyptian deity is Ra. The color is Yellow or Gold. The number is Six. The incense is Olibanum (frankincense). The gemstone is Topaz. The animal is the Phoenix. The instrument is the Lamen.

So you gather the instruments and set about preparing the temple and its arrangement as follows ...
51

A golden temple is built, rented or otherwise simulated. A circle is prepared that is six feet or meters in radius (twelve feet in diameter), which has six hexagrams at its periphery upon which sit six golden lamps. Within the circle, which is laid down in yellow paint, are inscribed six names for the solar deity:
SOL OM ON HELIOS RA - SUN

The altar is covered with a golden cloth in the center of which rests the golden disk that supports a golden censer, next to which is a container of frankincense. A wand is prepared with a pointed Topaz set in its head, and a Lamen is designed that bears an image of a Phoenix rising from the fire. An invocation of Ra is prepared on golden-colored papyrus, and a selection of music will be chosen for its harmonious nature. Once the rite begins, everywhere the magician looks he or she will see gold and yellow and six. The perfume (incense) inhaled will be Olibanum and the hearing will perceive naught but harmony. Thus, all the senses are attuned to Ra and the sphere of the Sun.
The first time this is done it will have no basis for stimulating memory. But with repetition, the senses will be re-stimulated (again and again) so that the exalted consciousness of the sphere of
52

the Sun is associated with these visual, auditory and olfactory cues. Perhaps it will come to pass that even a whiff of Olibanum will be enough to activate a Solar state of awareness. Of course, this needs to be done with the other spheres as well, and that amounts to a lot of practice. The correspondences must be memorized and ultimately applied to every object and sensation in daily life. When this is accomplished, one is truly leading a magical life.

Cross on Over to the Other Side THE PASSING ON OF THE INSTRUMENTS takes place at an advanced stage. We know that you can't take it with you, so it therefore follows that the magician must eventually "let go" of his or her instruments in order that their essence can become a fully operative, internal power. In The Book of Life (and Death) it was said:

The symbolic material signs must be transformed into Spirit. Do this: Transfigure these things into yourself. You have made them matter; now make them Holy. Restore them unto your Self. Sacrifice the form unto me. viii

53

Of course, the books don't actually need to be piled up and incinerated, but they will be set aside in favor of direct union. Perhaps they can be auctioned on eBay. Anicca, Anicca! - Everything passes away! Anicca means "impermanence."

On the Passing of the Instruments

The first "word" that was inscribed upon my dagger was AShTh circa 1964. Its number was 701, but only the beginning and the end, Ath (401), was engraved on the cup. The disk design started in the center with a point (A) and radiated out in 4 directions (4 x 100). It was all balanced and integrated and (to me) the entire set was quite powerful. Other people thought it was a bit powerful as well. My guru confiscated my complete collection of magical instruments on more than one occasion - only my silver talisman remained safe from seizure. In this first case, the instruments were "donated" to the arisen Solar Lodge temple. I had received a new name and the old name, the old formula, and the old implements, which had conjured the four elemental kings, passed away as I began to rebuild the whole, personal, Temple of Sol all over again. ix

Chapter 3

The Dynamics
Modern Western magicians generally state magic's primary purpose to be personal spiritual growth. Modern perspectives on the theory of magic broadly follow two views, which also correspond closely to ancient views. The first sees magic as a result of a universal sympathy within the universe, where if something is done here, a result happens somewhere else. The other view sees magic as a collaboration with spirits who cause the effect.

I T FINALLY COMES TIME to put it all together in a sequential manner. This chapter examines the various stages of a complete ritual in the order that the author deems ideal. The Seven Stages of any ceremony include Preparation, Opening, Banishing, The Oath, Invocation, Evocation and Closing. The Labor of Preparation PREPARATION is a magical power unto itself and is technically called The Labor of Preparation. It includes Determination, Correlation and Preparation. It also includes a lot of hard work.
55

DETERMINATION is when one determines just exactly what they intend to accomplish. If it is just a question of practicing, then a simple schedule can be established wherein the various rituals (Banishing, Invocation, etc.) are repeated on a regular basis. Let there be no mistake here, there needs to be a lot of routine practice. If it were a matter of celebration, perhaps a Solstice or an Equinox, then the astrological calendar may be consulted. If it were an undertaking to obtain esoteric information or to expand one's consciousness, then this would be similar to routine practice, but one does need to necessarily decide the exact nature of the objective beforehand. However, if there is to be a special rite conducted for the purpose of advancing the evolutionary process, then one simply doesn't step in and change the course of destiny. Like a good soldier, who only acts after receiving orders from a superior officer, the original concept or impulse must come from some realm of higher consciousness. The magician must first attain to The Vision, that is, an overview of what is intended by the evolutionary forces as the goal for humanity. Then he or she must gain access to The Plan, which is the method for obtaining that goal. Of course, a practitioner might simply receive instructions from the Secret Chiefs or the Solar Angel. But what if you were to decide to change things just because you don't like a particular politician and rush out to influence the outcome of an election? Well, that sounds a bit like Black Magic. In any case, you first get the idea from on high. Then you proceed to organize matters and make plans. CORRELATION is that process discussed earlier under Integration of the Elemental Instruments. It involves consulting (memorized?) Tables of Correspondences and selecting the arrangement and the instruments that conform to the goal. PREPARATION is where one's mind is put to work and the hands often get dirty. The chosen instruments must be polished, and the arrangement of the temple, the numbers, the colors, and the incense must be laid out. At this point, there are usually magical scavenger hunts conducted that take the magician into the outer world in order to find and obtain some obscure item.
56

Then the circle must be drawn and the instruments must be gathered and placed in their appropriate positions within its circumference. Newly obtained items must be ceremonially purified and consecrated, and this process may well constitute one or more separate rites, conducted in advance of the actual ritual itself. The date and time of the ceremony will, of course, be astrologically selected. It is not unusual for the entire labor of preparation to consume weeks, months, and even years. Prior to the rite, the participants will bathe, groom, and perhaps adorn with a (consecrated) scent befitting the nature of the ritual. Finally, everything is in its place and there inevitably comes the hour of commencement. These are the elements of a generic ceremony ...

The Grand Opening OPENING is the process of starting the ceremony. The magus, and any assistants, are properly robed and armed. The telephone is disconnected, the door is locked, the personnel enter the circle, and the background incense sticks are lit. If an evocation is to be performed (an entirely optional event), the three corners of the triangle are activated with fire (or perhaps this is belated - see evocation, below), and a period of meditation ensues.
57

At the appointed time, the magus or maga steps up to the altar, faces east (other directions may apply in certain rites), raises the bell and strikes the battery. The battery is the number and sequence of the tones struck upon the bell. The striking must not be rushed - each set of tones should radiate out to silent infinity. In general openings, 3-5-3 is appropriate, for eleven is the number of magic.

--

The Banishing THE MAGUS replaces the bell and takes up the Dagger. A Banishing Ritual is then performed. Note that most clearing rites consist of four stages: a preliminary centering, followed by a dynamic projection of the pentagram out into the four quarters, succeeded by a declaration of having cleared the circle, and concluded with a final centering. The author recommends that only the first three stages should be carried out at this point - the final centering being part of the Closing that comes at the far end of the ceremony.
58

Upon completing the declaration of the cleared circle, the magus will set aside the dagger and proceed to kindle the fire in the censer - taking time to ensure that any coals are indeed properly ignited, for there is a tendency at this point for the phlogiston to easily expire and render the inferno extinct.

The Oath THE MAGUS will now proceed to recite the (optional) Oath, which is a magical affirmation that states the intent of the ceremony accompanied by a vow to indeed follow through to its accomplishment.

The Invocation THE MAGUS will now place the primary Incense upon the glowing embers in the censer and proceed with the Invocation. Ideally, the Invocation will have been memorized. An Invocation that is read from a piece of paper or a book tends to reduce the effectiveness of the rite.
59

It is appropriate to first take up the Cup or the Wand. For a solitary Invocation, without an evocation to follow, the receptive Cup is adequate. But if an evocation will come next, then the Wand would be more applicable. It is also appropriate to simply invoke without taking up any instrument. When beginning an Invocation, a different battery may be struck upon the bell. For example, in an Invocation of Ra (whose number is six), 1-4-1 might be appropriate, or even 3-3, or 2-2-2, or simply 6 in a row.

AN INVOCATION is often quite lengthy and it is composed of five distinct subdivisions. In the first part, the deity is called forth, along with a description of his or her qualities and attributes. In the second part, it as though the deity itself were speaking, announcing his or her characteristics and nature. In the third part, the magus and the deity become one. In the fourth part, the deity overshadows the magus, using the magician's physical vehicle and voice to radiate his or her energy and essence. In the fifth part, the light of the deity is grounded. Only the first four stages should be carried out at this point the final grounding being part of the Closing that comes at the far end of the ceremony. An Invocation requires that the magician be firm but humble. After all, one is performing a supplication. This is not a case of commanding a demon, but rather a matter of setting aside the ego in favor of a receptive, reverent attitude. Any attempt to impose one's will upon a god or goddess will end in failure or distress. The magus should be completely overshadowed and energized by the deity. In fact, there should be no difference between the two entities. The magician will probably feel high, expanded, and electrified, but sometimes there is a tendency to feel faint (need a little more practice, do you?). It is only in this exalted state of consciousness that the magician is properly prepared to light the magical Lamp, an act that is now performed.

60

Also, only in this state is he or she sufficiently protected in order to proceed with the process of evocation.

The Evocation THE MAGUS will have previously ensured that the three corners of the triangle are activated (before the Opening). If incense sticks were used, they must be of sufficient length to continue burning for quite a while. If fluorescent glow-sticks are in place, they will undoubtedly last throughout the entire rite, but they are not preferred as they produce no smoke. If short incense sticks or cones are used, they must now be lit, or if censers have been placed and previously ignited, resins, gums or woods need to be added. This incense is usually different from the perfume used in the invocation and should be selected according to the nature of the work (and thus according to the nature of the spirit). During this procedure, it is essential that the practitioner radiate energy out from his or her exposed arm, because part of the physical vehicle will now be extended beyond the perimeter of the protective circle. With desirable clouds of pungent smoke arising through and about the triangle, the magician will proceed to call forth the chosen spirit. The wand is used to command the demon, but the dagger must be close at hand in case the specter becomes recalcitrant and requires discipline. Any talisman that will be charged (if there is one) must also be nearby within the circle.
61

Evocation is divided into four stages. There is the conjuration or calling forth, followed by the charging or instructions, which are succeeded by the token or confirmation, and ending with the license to depart. Perhaps an example of the language and gestures is advisable:

"Ashmodel! Ashmodel! Ashmodel! In the name of the mighty and terrible one, Ra the magnificent, I conjure and constrain thee, oh mighty spirit Ashmodel ! Come forth from your abode and appear here before me within this triangle of art - that you might receive instruction for activity to be performed in the furtherance of the Great Work."
The demon should now appear in the smoke within the triangle. The appearance may be distinct or vague.

"Oh! Ashmodel! You are hereby commanded to "

[name the task that is to be performed - be very specific in order to avoid mistakes, sideeffects, or other undesirable results].

"As a token of compliance, I now call upon you to set your hand upon this wand in confirmation of your obedience to the accomplishment of this task."
[The wand is extended into the triangle - you better remember to radiate energy out through the wand!] Or - if a talisman is being charged

"I command you to set your hand upon this talisman in order to charge it with your essence and in confirmation of your future obedience to come forth and execute its intent whenever it might be taken from its secure place and set in contact with the link to be affected."
[The talisman is extended into the triangle - again, remember to radiate energy out through the talisman!] A tingling energy or heat in the wand or talisman is often felt when the spirit complies. The object is then withdrawn back into the circle.
62

License to Depart "I now give you license to depart in peace unto your abode, causing no harm or disturbance unto any person or place and showing no visible sign of your presence or departure."
A pentagram is then traced in the air with the wand or dagger. All signs of the spirit must now disappear before proceeding to the next stage. Once the spirit has departed, any talisman that has been charged should be placed in a (previously-prepared) container, such as a book (of talismans), or a leather, wool or silk case, pouch or envelope (do not use a paper envelope or a plastic or synthetic case - these leak energy). Having thus conjured, charged and dismissed the spirit, and having secured the talisman, the magician may proceed to the Closing.

The Closing CLOSING is the process of ending the ceremony. First, the invocation is closed by completing the fifth part, wherein the light of the deity is grounded or made manifest. After grounding, the invocation is finalized by striking the battery upon the bell that was used at the beginning of the invocation.

63

.Next, the banishing is drawn to a close by performing the fourth part, wherein the final centering is enacted. When closing the banishing ritual, the battery used at the beginning of the entire ceremony is struck upon the bell.

--
This essentially closes the circle. All fires should be extinguished and the instruments should be cleaned and wrapped in their wool or silk coverings. The magus, and any assistants, may now exit the circle, unlock the door, resume "civilized" clothing, and plug in the telephone.

Chapter 4

Dramatic Rituals
A ritual may be performed on specific occasions, or at the discretion of individuals or communities. It may be performed by a single individual, by a group, or by the entire community; in arbitrary places, or in places especially reserved for it; either in public, in private, or before specific people. - Wikipedia xi
T HIS SHORT CHAPTER examines rituals that involve dramatic performance. This type of rite usually involves two or more magi and is thus also known as a group ceremony. The stages and procedures are similar to the ceremonial dynamics expounded in the previous chapter, so here there will only be the briefest mention when the same principles apply, but a rather extended exposition when the standards relate specifically to group working. The Labor of Preparation

Preparation is, of course, required for dramatic rituals.

65

In addition to the usual Determination, Correlation and Preparation, there is also the consideration of a script. That is, who will perform which action and who will utter what words. It is just like putting on a play, except there probably will be no rehearsals. Different magicians will usually perform the various parts. That is, one person might arrange the temple, while another might see to locking the door and performing the banishing. If there is to be an evocation, then the magus who performs the invocation should also conjure the spirit - after all, it's his or her consciousness that's on the line! The Opening A Group Opening may vary from the singular, one-person ritual. Sometimes a few magi may link hands in an esoteric manner, or a preliminary dialog may serve as the words that open the temple, lodge or camp. However, at the appointed time, a magus or maga steps up to the altar, faces east, raises the bell, strikes the battery, and performs the Banishing. Upon completion of the banishing, this magus will set aside the dagger and proceed to kindle the fire in the censer. The Oath The magi then proceed to recite the Oath (if there is be one), which is usually intoned by the high magician (the primary magus) and repeated by the others. The Invocation The high magus will now place the primary incense in the censer and proceed with the Invocation. The Drama The Dramatic Presentation then follows. Obviously, each part is enacted by a different magician. There is not much that can be said about the drama, except that each participant should get his or her lines right and utter them at the correct time. The Closing Closing is simply the reverse of the Opening. First, the invocation is closed and the battery struck upon the bell.
66

Next, the banishing is closed with the final centering and the battery struck upon the bell.

--
This closes the circle. All fires should be extinguished and the instruments should be cleaned and wrapped in their wool or silk coverings. The magus, and any assistants, may now exit the circle, unlock the door, resume "civilized" clothing, and plug in the telephone.

Rites of Initiation INITIATION CEREMONIES are usually group ceremonies. The script will usually have been written, or memorized, and the details will have been standardized, according to the traditions of the group or the society. In addition to other descriptions and definitions given in the first chapter of this Essay, we may add the following

Initiation is Shock !
That is, it is expected that a magical ceremony of initiation will include at least one element of shock or agitation that is intended to jolt the candidate. This surprise may, or may not, actually shock the aspirant, depending on the nature of the ceremony and the applicants nature. But it is at least symbolical of a crisis that is encountered in the real-life initiation events that inevitably move the Assemblage Point.
67

Just prior to an initiation ceremony, many aspirants will suffer from acute anxiety. This is to be expected in many instances, simply because the candidate knows that some sort of indignity is going to be applied, and yet the exact nature of that abuse usually remains unrevealed. However, once the ordeal is over, it is not normal for the anxiety to prevail.

Chapter 5

Overshadowing
Overshadowing means to take precedence over, be superior to, tower above, steal the limelight from, leave or put in the shade, render insignificant by comparison. - thefreedictionary.com

69

O VERSHADOWING is the process by which an entity influences or becomes the magician. When we invoke a god or goddess, that deity descends from a higher level of consciousness into the magical circle and hovers over, interpenetrates, or becomes the magician. This is known as overshadowing, although other terms may apply. A higher level of consciousness means an expanded state of consciousness or being, normally not available to human awareness. As previously defined, the magical circle represents the energy field or aura of the magician. It is assumed that the circle (aura) has been cleared (banished) of all considerations prior to performing an invocation or otherwise establishing contact with higher forces. Overshadowing has many variations, including telepathic contact, trance channeling, conscious channeling, and full atonement. There is no place here for the magus to be overshadowed by a spirit or demon, because if that were to happen it would be a serious mistake and is known as possession. TELEPATHIC CONTACT is like talking on the telephone. The entity is still far away, but an image, vision or verbal message is transmitted to the recipient. Sometimes a complete two-way conversation will take place. The telepathic connection is established through some form of meditation or invocation. In addition to contact with deities, there is also contact with "guides." Guides are astral entities who are often tinted with excessive glamour. They can be higher beings, or discarnate individuals ("dead people"), or simply projections from the magician's subconscious mind. They can be liars, or they might easily be misinterpreted. If they regularly communicate accurate information, they can be valuable. In 1971, the author made contact with three "guides" on the inner planes. They were a North American Indian named Sunrise, a black-robed man called Alnomnia, and an Adept of no name. These entities were his constant companions, advising him in all matters, physical and metaphysical. It was like having his own company of attendant fortune tellers. Were these real, independent entities, or were they projections of his unconscious? Who cares? This can be said for them: They were always 100% accurate - 70

never once was their information found to be false or even slightly misleading. But in 1974, the author received a message from "higher sources" that said he should "discontinue contact with these beings," for he was then in preparation for the central rite of white magic, the invocation of the Solar Angel. And how could he expect to communicate with such an exalted entity when he was still talking with astral guides? So he broke off communication with them - but they certainly were informative. He said, Thanks, guys! With messages or information being received via (any form) of telepathic contact, one of the most common questions posed by aspiring mystics and magicians is, " But how do I know if this is real information? How do I know if the message is coming from my higher self or some advanced being, or is it simply a product of my wishful thinking and power of imagination? It could be that I am just kidding myself." This is a valid point and a well-founded question that every person who indulges in telepathy must ask, and answer, for themselves. There are no guarantees or lie-detector tests available. The following rules-of-thumb may apply to this dilemma: 1. If a message (or even a passage in a book) intuitively internally "rings true" it should be accepted as being true. Of course, this assumes you're not wrestling with the intuition versus desire issue. There is a lot of room for error in this. 2. If a message can be verified through a Table of Correspondences, it is valid. This assumes you are a skilled Qabalist or Numerologist and you are able to convert symbols or words into numbers and interpret the result. 3. Any entity may be examined by the trial-and-error method. This is where you get messages over a period of time and you keep track of them, seeing if they hold up as being true, or if they prove to be false. After a period of time, you develop a sense of discrimination. TRANCE CHANNELING is when a channel (a receptive person) is completely taken over by an entity and he or she goes into a trance, which means the entity temporarily utilizes the mind, emotions and physical body of the recipient.
71

As he or she is in a trance, the channel is usually unaware of any messages delivered and he or she usually remembers nothing of the experience. Trance channels are sometimes called spirit mediums or simply mediums, although these terms are vague and variable. A trance is established through meditation or invocation or hypnosis. There is no place in Magick for trances. The initiated magus is required to exercise free will and to remain in full, conscious awareness at all times. CONSCIOUS CHANNELING is when a channel (a receptive person) is impressed by an entity, but he or she does not go into a trance, which means that the entity temporarily utilizes the mind, emotions and possibly the physical body of the recipient. As they are not in a trance, the channel is usually completely aware of any messages delivered and he or she will remember the experience. Like trance channels, conscious channels are also called spirit mediums or simply mediums. Sometimes they are simply known as consultants. A conscious channeling connection is established through meditation or invocation. There may well be a place in magic for conscious transmission. The channel is usually seated in a chair or an asana (yoga position). Sometimes the channel is standing or even walking around. ATONEMENT, in this case, means AT-ONE-MENT, which describes being of one-mind. This is our definition of magical overshadowing and implies that the entity utilizes the mind, emotions and physical body of the magus or maga. The magician is completely aware of his or her alteration in consciousness and will remember the experience. A conscious, magical overshadowing is established through invocation. This is the objective in magical practice. The magus is completely able to sit, stand or move around. Overshadowing may involve various entities, including gods, goddesses, angels and masters. Spirits, demons and ghosts need not apply.
72

Overshadowing is also applicable to some interesting concepts, including the transmigration of positions and the manifestation of avatars. THE TRANSMIGRATION OF POSITIONS involves a person who holds an "office" or a certain esoteric status within a group. The group is overshadowed by an Order that exists on the astral plane (and hopefully higher), and individual people occupy specific positions that are singularly overshadowed by entities from the inner plane group. When a person quits their position (or proves unworthy and is simply by-passed), this individual "loses" the overshadowing. Invariably, another member in the group (or a new member) soon takes up that position. This has nothing to do with being elected or appointed. It seems to simply occur. Most groups have noticed that when someone leaves, another person comes along and members begin to whisper, "Why he's just like so-and-so." This process occurs within groups that are formal or informal, white or black, ancient or recent, truth-based or illusionary. Overshadowing from the mental or astral (emotional) planes, without higher linkages, will be muddled and deceptive, yet it is common, for many groups and orders exist in the astral realm that are without a higher linkage or lineage. The Tibetans are particularly adept in locating and recognizing the reincarnation of a deceased lama. A tulku is a particular highranking lama who can choose the manner of his (or her) rebirth and who is able, on their deathbed, to make known the place of their next birth. When found, such a person is known as a recognized incarnation. Each tulku has a distinct lineage of rebirths. For example, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama is held to be the reincarnation of each of the previous thirteen Dalai Lamas, who are in turn considered to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara, or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The vast majority of tulkus (and lamas, as well) are men, although some are women. THE MANIFESTATION OF AN AVATAR is a rare event. It involves the direct incarnation of a cosmic being. Overshadowing of an initiate by an avatar is a bit more common.
73

An Avatar is a being who comes into the world in order to advance the evolutionary process. Thus he is a white magician of the highest order. By strict definition, he is born fully awake to his nature and purpose and this awareness never goes away. It might be said that all humans are born fully awake, but then the rigors of parental discipline, toilet-training, and society's imposition of "reality" soon causes all awareness of cosmic consciousness to be repressed. Sometime, much later in life (if at all), the individual is inspired to regain his or her universal consciousness, and they enter the spiritual path - this is also called The Path of Return.

74

Chapter 6

Pure White Magic

The white magician is one who is in touch with his soul. He is receptive to and aware of the purpose and the plan of his soul. He is capable of receiving impressions from the realm of spirit and of registering them in his physical brain White magic works from above downwards, is the result of solar vibration and therefore of [soul] energy, and is not an effect of the vibration of the form side of life, being divorced from emotion and mental impulse. - Bailey xii
T HE W HITE S TYLE OF M AGIC is concerned with benefiting the whole at the expense of one's self. Of course, if the whole benefits then so do its parts, including the white magician. White magi often perform external, magickal ceremonies to enhance the evolutionary process and bestow an expanded, higher level of consciousness upon humanity. When we refer to Pure White Magic, it is the term Pure that merits consideration. Pure means that the process is purely spiritual. That is, there are no external, ceremonial, magical techniques utilized, including rituals, talismans, and/or links. Pure White Magick is engaged in the following manner: Will (with a capital W ) is defined as The Universal Will or Higher Will, the impulse to cause change that comes from higher
75

sources (including God, the Universe, the Planetary Hierarchy or White Brotherhood, the Supernal Triad, the Higher Self, or the Solar Angel). Will must not be confused with personal willpower, desire or want, each of these being a force that is part of the personality. The term Will is derived from the Greek word, Thelema, or perhaps from the Latin verb, Velle ("to Will"). Contemporary authors and teachers, including yogis, shamans, and metaphysical pundits, now often exclusively use the word, Intent, instead of Will. But they are essentially the same thing, although an analytical distinction can be made. The original cosmic impulse to cause change is generated in higher realms and is registered in the Atmic (atomic) level of consciousness, but it is intuitively perceived at the next level down, the Buddhic level of intuition-understanding. It then must descend through The Abyss to be recognized by the human consciousness at the higher Manasic level (the "higher" mind - as differentiated from lower Manas the "concrete" mind, or intellect). This information is then absorbed from the "higher" mind into the "concrete" mind, or intellect, where it can be formulated into a symbolic thoughtform or image (the process is called imagination). The thoughtform is then energized with astral energy (emotional desire) in order to empower it with an impulse to influence the etheric-physical level, where it can easily manifest in the dense-physical realm, where it then become "reality." In external ceremonies, a link, and/or a talisman, is normally used in order to effect a change in matter through the agency of sympathetic magic. The talisman and the link are composed of symbolic elements consisting of both the cause and the effect. But this astral-etheric-physical methodology is not employed in Pure White Magick, as the pure art is of a strictly spiritual and higher mental nature. However, no matter what the style, there is always an element of astral motivation involved, for any concrete thoughtform is automatically bound up with some form of desire The Hindus call it Kama-Manas ("desire-mind"). Except in the case of an incarnated Avatar, the aspirant to, and practitioner of, white magic is essentially going to evolve through three distinct stages in his or her career: The Outer Order, the Inner Order, and the Supreme Order. Let us examine these stages in terms of magical practices - Outer, Inner, and Supreme:
76

Outer Magic THE OUTER ORDER, as we have seen, involves the development and alignment of the persona (which means "mask" and is the superficial personality). Magical practices performed at this level are external and always involve some element of selfishness, for the personality, or "outer" person, is incapable of contacting the higher realms in order to determine cosmic intent. There is much experimentation and basic practice involved at this beginning-level of external rites. Thus it is said that these earlier rituals invariably contain aspects of black magic. What the Neophyte is supposed to be doing is practicing and developing his or her powers as a prelude to the central rite of the Inner Order. Inner Magic THE INNER ORDER includes the task of contacting one's Solar Angel. Magical practices carried out at this level are usually both internal and external, and should involve consultation with the Angel in order to determine the nature of the rites to be performed. However, the Adept is not yet freed from personal karma, and some element of personal confusion still exists, for the causal body, or "inner" person, is indeed capable of contacting the higher realms in order to determine cosmic intent, but many "blind spots" still exist. It is possible, even at this advanced level, for the initiate to fall prey to illusion and engage in the practice of (selfish) black magic. Some individuals are said to have completely failed in their attempt to remain in contact with their Solar Angel, and instead to have established communication with their Evil Genius - which is just a fancy way of saying that they got wrapped up in their karmic web and have been influenced by a need for power, sex, and/or material domination. What the Adept is supposed to be doing is expiating his or her karma in preparation of the ultimate tasks of the Supernal Order. Supreme Magick To be working within the SUPERNAL ORDER implies the attainment of a stable position on the Buddhic (Binah) or Atmic (Chokmah) levels of consciousness. Therefore, only in conjunction with these rarified levels is the practice of Pure White Magic possible.
77

The Magister [The Master of the Temple] has indeed cleared away his or her personal karma, but it has been replaced by the necessity of dealing with universal karma. Thus terms like evolutionary advancement and cosmic evil are applicable. The Magi of the Supreme Order may indeed initiate external rites in order to serve the purposes of advancing and protecting humanity, yet the ideal methodology is purely an intuitive-causal (abstract mental) approach. After all, he or she has grown up now and should be able to influence progress without resorting to the playthings of the beginning magician.

Chapter 7

Raja Yoga
Raja Yoga ["royal yoga", "royal union"], also known as Classical Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga, is concerned principally with the cultivation of the mind, using meditation (dhyana) to further one's acquaintance with reality and finally achieve liberation. Wikipedia xiii
THE TERMS used in describing or practicing Yoga are mainly derived from Sanskrit. Sometimes the words can get quite lengthy. We see references like Shivatmadarshana,1 and wonder if we need to go to ancient Indian language school. That is why we try to keep the terminology simple, and always accompanied by English meanings. Raja Yoga RAJA YOGA is the "Royal" Yoga of ancient times. One depiction of this format is that it was practiced by the upper classes, or royalty, due to its non-ascetic nature. It could even be performed while sitting in a chair - How civilized! Of course, it really can be practiced by anyone, in any financial or civil position. The point is, one does not have to be a Rajah sitting in a chair ... or ... a dirty, scantily-skinned hermit who sits on woven mats or animal hides deep in the wilderness of poverty.
1

Shivatmadarshana is The Vision of the Destruction of the Higher Self. 81

Or, that's exactly what you can be ...

RAJA YOGA has eight (8) divisions. The first two (2) are moral/ethical in nature, and have no specific technique associated with them. The next four (4) are practices to be undertaken - they each have their own specific techniques. The final two (2) are results, and therefore are merely descriptive. YAMA 1. YAMA - The Code of Conduct "Thou shalt not ... " Yama really means "control" or "restraint." This consists of not doing bad works.

82

These are the restraints (non-indulgences) we employ in our dealings with the external world. Although many examples are given in Indian texts and in western codes like the Ten Commandments, one merely needs to find out what actions result in making your conscience unhappy ... and then don't do it! Patanjali's five Yamas are: Harmlessness (this is the "main" yama - the others support it), Truthfulness, Non-stealing-covetingentering into debt, Divine conduct (non-lust), and Non-greed. NIYAMA

codes, one merely needs to find out what actions result in making your conscience happy. .Patanjali's five Niyamas are: Purity, Contentment, Austerity, Spiritual Study, and Self-Surrender. Some Considerations of Any Moral Code These concepts (yama and Niyama) involve the establishment of a "Moral Code," with the idea that once you formulate it, you will stick by it. Two difficulties now present themselves: (1) Morals, including the terms "good and bad," are later (at higher levels of consciousness) discovered to be completely relative to any given situation and, perhaps, totally irrelevant. (2) The "Moral Code" that one establishes for one's self might not be one that is held by one's subconscious mind. Thus, exposure to higher states of consciousness may inflame moral behavior that differs greatly from one's consciously chosen code of conduct.
83

ASANA 3. ASANA - control of posture Asana really means "control of the physical body." It is practiced by choosing a position and sitting absolutely still in that position for long periods of time. It doesn't matter which position you choose, because any position is going to get uncomfortable, so you might as well choose a position that puts the least amount of strain on your body. After beginning the practice, thinking another position might be better, and then changing to a new position, is discouraged and is merely the equivalent of starting all over again. However, some positions might place undo strain on certain parts of the body, for example - the lower back or the knees. If asana practice results in chronic low back pain, then a new position is unavoidable. This is why the initial choice should be well thought out. Generally, for westerners, the simplest positions are best. The Practice of Asana THE PRACTICE: Sit in your asana (your chosen position) for a predetermined period of time each day. Ten minutes is recommended in the beginning. You will probably need a clock or a timer. Do not move. You may breathe normally - do not pay any attention to your breathing. Observe your body. You are looking for physical "breaks." A break is an ache, an itch, a twitch, a cramp, or some similar distraction. Keep a running count of the total number of breaks. Some people like to use an hourglass as a timer or count breaks on a string of beads.
84

At the end of each practice session, write down the date, the position, the time in asana, and the total number of breaks. At first, as the days proceed, there is a tendency for the breaks to stabilize, then decrease, then greatly increase, and then stabilize again. Then it's time to increase the daily practice from ten to fifteen minutes. One would think that by the time you got up to an hour per day, and several weeks or months (or years) had gone by, that you would gradually have taken control of the body's insistent messages - and to a certain extent, that is true. But that's not the effect your looking for! The Result: The posture becomes steady and easy. There is a specific feeling associated with this event: Although it can easily be stated, we will not describe it here, for it is the password to be whispered by the student unto the teacher when he or she is ready to announce success! Anyone who skips asana, and moves directly into advanced practices, will find that even mediocre results at the "higher" levels will simply stimulate breaks in the physical body and further progress will cease. The so-called standard test of Asana, wherein the initiate sits still for one hour with a bowl of water filled to the brim upon the head without spilling a drop, may be considered an idealized joke. There is no evidence that Frater Perdurabo, or any other initiate, ever passed such a test. The goal of asana is not a rigid body the goal is to eliminate any distracting physical sensations during mental concentration. If you are concentrating, and you are disturbed by itches, twitches, pain or cramps, then more work in asana is indicated. The Positions of Asana THE POSITIONS: One would be wise to avoid the pretzel-bent "poses" of Hatha Yoga unless one was actually practicing that style. For meditation purposes, the chosen position should be "easy." Typically, people just sit down, cross their legs, and rest their forearms on their lower, inner thighs just above the knees.
85

A Word of Caution: Many Oriental people become accustomed to sitting flat on the floor because they have done it since they were children. Westerners (and anyone else accustomed to chairs and couches) may find that they display lower back pain after sitting flat on the floor. If so, the use of a sitting cushion may be necessary. Each person must determine, through trial and error, how thick is must be. It may vary from one to eight inches. Thus, standardized, manufactured, meditation pillows may, or may not, be inadequate. A simple, third, floor-contact position is called The Dragon. You kneel, making certain that your feet and toes are pointed directly backward. The full body weight rests on the backs of the leg, and the hands rest flat on the thighs. This is the standard position that is assumed by teacher and students at the beginning of Japanese martial arts classes. If any of the above floor-sitting (or cushion-sitting) positions are unsuitable, then one really should consider using The God position. A simple, straight-backed chair is utilized, preferably one that is not fluffy and soft. The feet are flat on the floor, the knees are touching (they will probably tend to separate), and the palms rest flat on the thighs.
86

In all of the above positions, the spine is straight and the head is erect. If the neck is held too straight, the ideal alignment will be off-centered. To obtain the proper alignment, tilt your head forward slightly until you find the perfect balance point: when you relax your neck muscles, your head should neither tend to drop forward nor want to fall back. There are also various lying-down positions: There is The Corpse (flat on your back) with your arms at your sides. And there is The Dying Buddha (on your side), with your head supported by the hand and bent arm that is closest to the floor. And there is the Dead Osiris on His Back , where the arms are crossed at the wrists over the heart. These positions are generally not recommended. Corpses tend to go to sleep and Dying Buddhas have difficulty in performing pranayama (the next step). .There are also various standing-up positions:

87

Two Hands - Ten Fingers THE HAND AND FINGER POSITIONS: Once the practitioner is seated in his or her chosen position, the question may arise: "What do I do with my hands and fingers?" This is a matter of convenience. Remember, when counting breaks, the fingers may be needed to flick beads along a string, or one may count breaks by using the fingers like a child performing basic addition. There is one hand position, popular amongst "new age" yogis, wherein the open palms are placed facing upward. They explain that this is an attitude of "reception," as if the cosmic energy will be descending from above and will enter their palms. Although it is possible that a certain amount of environmental Prana (Chi or "energy") may be drawn into the palms, the ultimate goal of Yoga is to become one with the primordial consciousness, and that is found deep inside the practitioner's consciousness. So the "palms up" hand position is merely symbolic and represents an attitude of wishful thinking. The typical hand position involves making a circle with the fingers, usually with the thumb and middle finger touching (see half-lotus image, above). Other fingers may be thus encircled. It is said that this circular pattern "closes the energy circuit" and reroutes the energy back into the main system. It is also said that this circular pattern announces to other people that "I am closed" in meditation please do not disturb. There are also complex hand and finger positions called Mudras. These are reminiscent of the pretzel contortions of Hatha Yoga. Each mudra is said to produce a specific effect (i.e., the overcoming of grief, or to gain prosperity, etc). The simplest sitting position is recommended, with the hands free to count breaks and also free to be used in the next stage ...

PRANAYAMA 4. PRANAYAMA - "control of breathing." Pranayama really means "control of energy." It is practiced by sitting in an asana position and regulating the breath. This is commonly called "breathing exercises." Some commentators suggest that the energy can be directly regulated, and that breathing merely accompanies this act. However, all translated and correlated terms seem to mean the same thing:

Prana = energy = Ki = Qi = Chi = "breath"

There are literally hundreds of regulated breathing techniques. The basic format involves closing one nostril at a time as you breath in and out, from side to side. Next comes breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth. Finally, the breath is held in between inhalation and exhalation, and sometimes between exhalation and inhalation. This "holding of the breath" (called Kumbhaka) has been described as the most beneficial act that one can perform, as well as an action that can permanently damage one's health. Okay - this is one of those controversial topics ! We have never known anyone who suffered ill effects from its performance. Pranayama directly controls the mind and the emotions. Each inhalation and exhalation (and the Kumbhaka, as well) is timed.
89

For example: Breathe in for seven seconds, hold for seven seconds, exhale for seven seconds - doing this for seven cycles. As the days and weeks go by, the length of each action is increased. At the end of each practice session, write down the date, the type of pranayama, the time (in seconds) for each type, and the number of cycles. The written record, used for all practices ( asana, pranayama, dharana, and any results) can be invaluable at a later time when tracking your progress. Moving ahead with the practices, while neglecting the written record, is definitely not recommended. Of course, the yogis in India do not necessarily keep a written record. At least its is not included in the ancient texts. However, more than one contemporary, esoteric Order has strong feelings on the subject: "In the absence of a written record, any attainment whatsoever will not be recognized." Case History FRATER KUAT was born into a family of genetically-induced, overweight ancestors and siblings. As a long-time member of Solar Lodge [seventeen years], he was introduced to the entire spectrum of magical and mystical practices. By his own admission, he did not engage in the regular practice of these arts, except for pranayama. For approximately one year, he performed pranayama on a regular, daily basis. His energy level rose. He enjoyed a state of euphoria. His weight, normally over three-hundred pounds, dropped to one-hundred and eighty. This period was the best era of his entire life, physically and mentally. For reasons unknown, he came to discontinue the breathing exercises. His weight regained its normal level that exceeded the number, three-hundred. There is a moral hidden somewhere in this brief case history. Can you find it? The Essentials PRANAYAMA comes with many tales, instructions and techniques. Lets forget the nonsense and look at the important points. There are two keys and one beneficial modification: [1] Use of the diaphragm, [2] slow exhalation, and [3] paradoxical breathing.
90

USE OF THE DIAPHRAGM means you must inhale and exhale with the thoracic diaphragm muscle.

muscles to breathe results in shallow breath. It is deep breathing that is desired. Also, the breath rate must be controlled by the diaphragm. That is, one must not control the rate of inhalation, exhalation or holding with the throat muscles, as this puts an unnecessary strain or pressure upon the entire respiratory system. You know when you are doing this properly when there is neither a sighing noise in the throat, nor a feeling or sense of air passing through the larynx (voice box) or pharynx (throat). Proper use of the diaphragm is common to yoga, martial arts and physical disciplines of many kinds. SLOW EXHALATION means that you must exhale at a slower rate than the inhalation. When they are exited or under stress, most people will rapidly blow out their breath, often with a puffing or sighing sound. The brainwave frequency is directly influenced by the inhaleexhale ratio. The discipline of yoga requires the slowest brainwave frequency that can be achieved, if proper results are to be attained. The inhale-exhale ratio is summarized in TABLE I.

PARADOXICAL BREATHING means reversing the direction of the abdominal muscles. This is called fetal breathing, because its what a fetus does before birth, exerting a pumping function in the umbilicus to promote blood flow from the mother. Usually a person breathes in by pulling down (contracting) the diaphragm, creating a partial vacuum in the lungs that draws in fresh air. And the abdomen gets larger. The Tibetans call this normal breathing. Usually a person breathes out by pushing up (relaxing) the diaphragm to its resting position, forcing stale air out of the lings. And the abdomen gets smaller. The Tibetans also say this is normal breathing. In PARADOXICAL BREATHING, a person breathes in by consciously pulling in the abdomen, while creating a partial vacuum in the lungs that draws in fresh air. And the abdomen gets smaller. The Tibetans call this correct breathing.

In PARADOXICAL BREATHING, a person breathes out by contracting the abdominal muscles (around the hara or tan-tien), while forcing stale air out of the lings. And the abdomen gets larger and harder. The Tibetans also say this is correct breathing. All you have to do is sit down and breathe deeply in this paradoxical manner, for about five breaths, and you will quickly see what effects it produces. Ideally, the yogi or yogini would use this reversed-breathing procedure throughout his or her pranayama schedule. Martial artists and qi gong practitioners are trained to use this method when generating or directing ki or chi. These are the secrets of pranayama: Exhale slower than you inhale, or hold the breath still in between, and reverse the actions (directions) of the abdominal muscles. Empowerments bestow the ability to activate certain healing energies; it is recommended that they be enhanced with pranayama.

PRATYAHARA

xiv

5. PRATYAHARA is often defined as "introspection. Pratyahara really means "removing indriyas [tentacles] from material objects." This is the stage in which a yogi controls the tentacles of consciousness that are called indriyas in Sanskrit.
94

Prayahara is possibly the most difficult stage to describe due to many historical mistranslations and cultural-linguistic misunderstandings. It has been translated as Introspection, Abstraction, Withdrawal, Sublimation, Drawing Back, Retreat, Control of the Senses, Inhibition, Internalization, Looking Inward, and Cutting the Ties that Bind. .These terms all imply that the practitioner turns his or her attention away from the external world and looks inward. The concept of indriyas exists only in the Indian spiritual culture. Westerners, calling upon their sometimes simple, and sometimes complex, religious ideas, are often incapable of understanding this concept. Even when translating from the Indian languages, they almost always substitute senses for the word indriyas, and the term comes to lose its original meaning. The most common translation of pratyahara is control over the senses. However, the senses are not all that is included in the term indriyas, for indriyas also includes the mind. The image of tentacles associated with the word indriyas gives rise to a subtle understanding of how the mind functions, as well as the methods for controlling it. Whenever we think about something or someone, the mind creates its own indriyas. Highly sensitive people can sense other peoples indriyas touching them. In some cases, they can even see the indriyas and are thus able to influence them. Indeed, concentration on any object via any sense organ, or with mind, is energetically the same as extending a tentacle to it from ones body. These tentacles are also known, by clairvoyants who can see them, as streamers, cords, or ribbons. One of the techniques that a practitioner must learn is how to draw all the indriyas away from the material world and the mental thoughtforms, and gaze inwards. Then one is free to extend the indriyas into inner awareness in order to embrace the primordial consciousness. This allows the yogi to see into the subtle (supra-mental) layers of multidimensional space, as well as to exit the physical body into these subtle layers, and to be in them, accustoming himself to their qualities. When we are completely engaged in regulating the breath in pranayama, pratyahara automatically occurs - to a certain extent.
95

In this case, the mind has become so occupied with the breath control that all links between the mind, the senses, and any external objects (that do not involve the breath) are cut off. A person experiences pratyahara, to a certain degree, just before drifting off to sleep and upon awakening. There is an awareness of what is happening externally, but there is a greatly reduced influence from the senses and the mind. One should be ably to enter a similar state at any time of the day by practicing pratyahara. A practitioner who is influenced by outside events and sensations, and by mental thoughtforms, can never achieve oneness with the primordial consciousness. The essence of pratyahara is to gain a reasonably effective power of inhibition over any type of thought. The yogi will probably persist for weeks and months, examining thoughtforms while attempting to suppress or "cut" them. There are techniques for stopping (inhibiting) thoughts. There are also techniques for actually cutting (severing) the tentacles (indriyas). Both of these can be correlated with the magical concept of "banishing."

Eventually, this "cutting" or "stopping" power will manifest in full force all at once. Without losing any power of observation, the mind will suddenly stop. This has also been called "Stopping the World" and Escape from the Matrix. Success in this practice is accompanied by a genuine sense of peace and tranquility. Regardless of whether the "stopping" power is partially- or fully- acquired, the practitioner will (sooner or later) advance to the next phase: Dharana, which is concentrating the mind on a single object ...
96

DHARANA

6. DHARANA is "mental concentration." Dharana means "immovable concentration of the mind." It is practiced by sitting in an asana position and mentally visualizing an unwavering image of a single object. This is a simple task when beginning to practice, but it becomes much more difficult when one when trying to maintain the concentration. Here is the starting point: (1) Pick a simple geometric shape with a basic color.. For example, a red triangle or a yellow square. Ancient texts recommend using one of the five Tatwas:
A black egg, blue circle, red triangle, silver crescent, or yellow square

(2) Close your eyes and visualize your chosen object.

mind resisting control ).

97

(4) Start with short periods - One minute a day is enough. Do it for the exact same period of time each day and keep a written count of the "breaks" (each distortion or color change - or distraction of any kind - is a break ). At first the number of breaks will tend to increase each day. Then, as you gain control, they will reduce. When they reduce, it is time to increase the timespan of the daily practice. (5) Do this until you can hold a steady image for long periods (at least ten minutes). (6) Proceed to a combined image with two shapes. Repeat everything over and over until you can finally add more and more complex objects - eventually leading to images of trees and people. At any time in this exercise the yogi may undergo ego-loss and may actually become the object of the concentration. The actual becoming is called dhyana ...

DHYANA 7. DHYANA means "meditation. Dhyana is actually a "result." It is attained by losing awareness of one's self (ego) and becoming the object of one's concentration. The term, "meditation," comes from the same root as "mediation," the process of bringing two things together (as in "labor" and "management").
98

The yogi's consciousness is "brought together" with the object of his or her concentration. Ideally, this would be the union of the "lower" consciousness and the "higher" consciousness. One can meditate on/with an automobile engine, a blue bird, a floor mat, the heart chakra, the Solar Angel, a god-form, or one's own "higher self." In this Essay, we will only be examining concepts that refer to expanded consciousness or spiritual development. However, even union with a lowly floor mat requires the "loss of ego consciousness" that is the hallmark of dhyana. This "ego loss" is usually accompanied by a clicking or popping sound and/or a flash of light. These are audio-visual representations of the "ego bubble" collapsing. The state can be short-lived or extend for a lengthy period of time. Many people have experienced dhyana without the necessary moral, physical and energetic preparation. They then demonstrate bizarre "side-effect" or "after-effect" reactions: One lady was meditating and she experienced dhyana. A few minutes later, she was out on the street corner, grabbing pedestrians by their sleeves and (in a loud and excited voice) attempting to explain the nature of reality to them. A well-known man in the metaphysical seminar circus was driving his automobile over a bridge when he suddenly experienced dhyana. Based on this single insight, he went on to design and present classes to the general public. He was quite successful (monetarily). His students appeared to benefit from the instruction, but the insights and high-energy states tended to dissolve after six weeks. Anyway, the state of dhyana is a result. Thus, there are no practical techniques for inducing it, except for the continual performance of dharana (concentration). After dhyana is experienced a few times, the yogi becomes more adept at allowing it to occur. Many expounders of yoga state that dhyana is not describable (being beyond time and space and all that). They then proceed to fill up several pages of description.
99

SAMADHI 8. SAMADHI implies Cosmic Union. Sam means equal, entire, same, and all. Adi means first, beginning, prior, primary, and preeminent. Do not be confused by the "h" in - adhi. The letter "h" is inserted as a phonetic device almost everywhere in the Hindi/Telegu written languages. Just as often, the "h" is merely omitted. For example, we equally see Shiva and Siva, depending on the translator. Thus, we use the term Adi to denote the first (highest) level of consciousness depicted in The Seven Planes Chart. On the Tree of Life, it is attributed to the nothingness that surrounds the Tree. Samadhi is an "expanded" result, similar to dhyana, but greatly enlarged beyond simple union with the single object of concentration. It is as though the yogi experienced union with a floor mat, but then the mat radiated outward to include all things.
100

This has been called cosmic consciousness and union with god, plus many other appropriate phrases. Any tendency to put an accurate name to it, or to describe it in detail, is doomed to failure. Several written depictions of both dhyana and samadhi further divide these states into subdivisions, each with its own particular descriptive qualities. The result of all this practice is that duality disappears. This event generally strikes the mind of the yogi like a lightning flash. Although many attempts have been made, it cannot be adequately described, even by the yoga masters. All of the yogi's image-making ability and sense-feeling apparatus dissolve in bliss by an experience that unhinges the mind and reduces the Matrix (the external world) to inconsequential trivia.

MIND'S EYE

Visualization is the act of forming a mental image. In psychology [and metaphysics] it is a technique involving focusing on positive mental images in order to achieve a particular goal. thefreedictionary.com
D YNAMIC V ISUALIZATION is not a part of tradiional Raja Yoga. Although dharana (concentration on a single object) may involve visualization, the earlier-viewed items (the Tatwas) are designed to be static and non-moving. In what we call Visualization, a scenario unfolds, just like watching a motion picture. Visualization has also been called Reverie and Guided Meditation. Do not confuse it with "daydreaming," although there are some similar characteristics. The idea is that one either listens to a guide, who describes a scenario aloud and the student follows along in his or her "mind's eye" - or - one memorizes the guide's scenario (or a written scenario) and then enacts it the "mind's eye." For some reason, most people are able to easily follow along in a dynamic visualization exercise, whereas many of these same people have absolutely no control over fixed objects ( dharana). Ideally, these visualizations would actually be carried out on the astral plane (with vision interaction) and not merely a passive imagining (like watching television).

Mantra Yoga
HEARING
WITH THE

MIND'S EAR

In Hinduism [and western metaphysics], a Mantra is a sacred verbal formula repeated in prayer, meditation, or incantation, such as an invocation of a god, a magic spell, or a syllable or portion of scripture containing mystical potentialities. - thefreedictionary.com
T HE CONSTANT REPETITION of a word or phrase, either aloud or mentally, is designed to constrain the mind to a single concept, process or realization. Our minds tend to consistently do this, with or without the conscious discipline of Mantra Yoga. For example, how often have you enjoyed the continual melody and lyrics from a popular song, or the endless reciting of a recent communication in which there was a misunderstanding? So why not take advantage of this process and impose your own (spiritually significant) word or phrase, and use it as a tool in your effort to gain union with the primordial consciousness? The word OM (or AUM) is probably the single most-popular mantra, having been used by yogis and meditators for centuries. There is also the phrase, Om Mani Padmi Hum.
104

Om Mani Padmi Hum is the six-toned sound of the Bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokitevara. The middle part of the mantra, Mani Padmi, is interpreted as "jewel in the lotus." Om is recognizable as the sacred syllable prefix of many mantras, and the Hum is an exclamation ! The Tibetans pronounce it Om Mani Peme Hung. AUM and OM Which spelling is correct? Actually they both are, but many people are confused and think they are variations of the same word, which simply is not the case at all. In a way they are similar, but each spelling and pronunciation is different, and the implied processes are in diametrical opposition. AUM is sounded in three distinct aspects (A-U-M). This symbolizes the process of Creation - wherein Spirit is brought down to the physical plane and anchored by the force of its outgoing, grounding vibration. It is the sound of enchantment, the vibratory process that is the source of illusion. OM is a dual sound (O-M). It signifies the Return of the Soul from the realm of illusion back unto its source. It is the sound of entering the silence, the vibration which tapers off into nothingness. AUM begins with the sound , and OM begins with the sound o. AUM is actually correctly sounded in seven distinct sounds, rather than the (seemingly obvious) triple sound. The OM is correctly sounded in one round sound. The Upanishads says, Those who sound the AUM return again, but those who sound the OM come not back and seek not again the form. Popular Lyrics and Mysticism Wonderful, operative Mantras are to be found throughout the realms of common ballads. The following interpretations rest solely with the author and do not represent the only concepts available. Siddhis
E XCEPTIONAL P RACTICES S IDDHIS are "magical powers." Almost all yoga texts refer to them and indicate that exposure to higher levels of consciousness will provide the practitioner with "supernatural powers." They are not "supernatural." They are completely natural - but only when one is operating in an adequately expanded level of consciousness. To the mundane awareness (the "common" person), a display of magical power or enlightened insight is bewildering and frightening, and is thus considered to be "supernatural." Some gurus say that the acquirement and use of magical powers is to be avoided, for all of one's energy is supposed to be focused on Union with the primordial consciousness. The exercise of magical powers reduces the total energy pool available for accomplishing that Union actually, it takes everything you've got! Other teachers merely indicate that these powers may or will be encountered and, presumably, will be regulated by your own highly-enforced Code of Conduct of yama and niyama.
107

Astral Projection ASTRAL PROJECTION can be encountered at any time. This is the wellknown Out-Of-the-Body (OOB) experience. Some gurus say that one should not leave the body because this will detract from the goal of Union with the primordial consciousness. Other teachers state that this may or will happen and that the aspirant should use this ability to soar higher into expanded consciousness. .Of specific fascination is the concept of the "silver cord" that connects the astral body to the physical body. Many people who report astral travel also comment on the presence of this etheric umbilical cord.

Yet, a few other travelers note that there is no such thing. What is going on here? It all depends on the status of the projector> That is, the presence of a silver cord is a matter of the individual's initiatory level. At a certain point on the spiritual path, the silver cord is severed (just like in physical death) and the adept ( yogi) is sustained solely by a meditatively-built connection of consciousness (the Antahkarana) that is anchored "above" (in the Monad at Kether). Yet his or her physical body continues. This is a rather high attainment and relatively rare.
108

When exiting the physical body, one usually passes out through one of the chakras. For example, departure through the Solar Plexus (a relatively common gateway) results in entry onto the Astral Plane - a realm composed of illusion and glamour. This exit is not recommended for the yogi or the initiate. The ideal doorway, both for astral travel and in the event of physical death, is the crown chakra.

Austerities AUSTERITIES are impositions that yogis can place upon their bodies and lives in order to further their efforts in performing the Great Work, which is attaining Union with the primordial consciousness. Typically, austerities are practices that are engaged by practitioners who are known as ascetics. Ascetics tend to live alone (or go away on meditation retreats), eat little or nothing, hold their breath for long periods of time, whip themselves with chains, lay on beds of nails, pierce themselves with arrows, do not take baths (or bathe many times each day), have few or no material possessions, cut their arms with razor blades upon thinking forbidden thoughts, and generally astound or amuse the rest of humanity with their strange behavior. They are found in all cultures. American Indians go away, for 24 hours up to several months, on a "Vision Quest" in order to determine their true identities and spiritual purpose. Pious Christians walk on their knees for miles. Japanese martial artists meditate under a waterfall for two years. Disobedient children are sent to their rooms, without the benefit of television, when they display recalcitrant behavior. Austerities of such a severe nature are not part of Raja Yoga, but they certainly may be applied - if that is your desire.
109

110

Chapter 10

The Chakras
Chakra means wheel.

111

There is a metaphysical concept that states, "Where two nadis cross, you have an acupuncture point, where seven nadis meet, we find a plexus, where twelve or more nadis intersect, that is a chakra (center)."

Each wheel is a vortex, spinning as it draws energy into its funnel. The visual effect is just like a stagecoach rolling down the road in a western movie - You have surely seen how (because of the

clockwise (as viewed by a person who is looking into the funnel) and the electro-magnetic shape should be round. Reverse-spinning, or oblong-ovoid shaped, vortices can easily be corrected, even by beginners of the art of magnetic, energetic healing.
112

The chakra funnels also appear within the emotional, mental and spiritual energy fields. In other words, they are present at all levels, except the dense-physical plane, where they manifest as nerve plexi and endocrine glands. The openings of the funnels are approximately four inches away from the surface of the body. Each funnel draws energy into the central channel, where it is incorporated into the totality of the energy body. Each chakra is associated with a color and a number. Each chakra governs an aspect of consciousness. Some forms of yoga incorporate practices that work directly with the chakras, either as objects of dharana or as dynamic energy centers. The popular assignment of colors to the chakras lines them up like a rainbow. Starting at the bottom, the order is red - orange / yellow / green / blue / indigo / violet . These colors are then superimposed over the energy centers, with red at the bottom and violet at the top. This is what comes from reading books and failing to see for one's self - It is not correct! This general trend continues along, rapturously supporting the illusionary Myth of the Rainbow correlation. Some schools of thought are particularly obsessed with assigning the color green to the heart chakra. The merest mention that this attribution may not be true is enough to severely shake their belief system and may, in fact, cause them to become angry and speak in a loud voice. The colors of the chakras, as seen clairvoyantly, do generally follow the pattern listed above. However, the sacral chakra is actually pink, the solar chakra is actually green (with a lot of yellow), and the heart chakra is a radiant golden-yellow (just like the sun). There are many yogis who adhere to this color scheme presumably, because they can actually see clairvoyantly. Note that this color scheme is specifically named and linked to the respective "wheels" in the ancient epic, the Mahabharata:
RED-ORANGE

/ PINK / GREEN-YELLOW / GOLD / AZURE BLUE / INDIGO / VIOLET

113

The Base Chakra THE BASE OR ROOT CHAKRA is physically located between the anus and the external genitalia, although most people simply say, "at the base of the spine." It is directly accessed and regulated by the acupuncture point Ren 1 ("Perineum"). Its color is said to be Red, although it actually is an orange-red (commonly called "Chinese Red") with some yellow and a whitehot core. It looks just like molten lava or a very bright fire. It is also referred to as the Kundalini Chakra. It is associated with three symbols: A Red Square (for visualization purposes), a yellow cross on a red background (as it actually appears to the inner vision as it is rising up the Sushumna, or "central channel'), and a Red Triangle (for symbolic reference). Think of looking down the primary vent hole of a volcano. The energy is seen as lava-like, whirling, ascending energy. The Root chakra has been erroneously identified with the sexual organs and with sexual processes. This is not the case, for the gonads are linked to the next higher, sacral chakra. Although sexual activity may draw energy up from the root chakra, this fourlotus of four petals is concerned with the prime directive of Survival.
114

In order to determine which is the most "primal" drive, look at it this way: If you were given the choice between "continuing to live" and "having sex," which one would you choose? Yeah! Sometimes it's a hard decision to make.

The Sacral Chakra THE SACRAL CHAKRA funnels are physically located behind the sacrum and in front of the lower abdomen. This center is directly accessed and regulated by the acupuncture points Ren 4 ("Hinge at the Source"), Ren 6 ("Sea of Chi"), and Du 4 ("Gate of Life"). Its color is commonly said to be Orange, but this is a widelyspread misconception. It is actually Pink, and a whitish-pink at that. The color is just like subtle, pink, cherry blossom leaves. It is associated with two symbols: A Pink Triangle (for visualization purposes) and a six-petaled flower (or six-spoked wheel). This chakra governs the kidneys, the gonads, and the availability of "reserve energy." It is often depleted or deficient in modern, civilized people due to what the Chinese call "excessive sex" and "exuberant lifestyle." The Sacral chakra has been mistakenly called the "Spleen Chakra," due to that name being published by a Theosophical author about a hundred years ago. It has also been called the "Navel Chakra." Both of these terms are inaccurate. This six-petaled lotus does not govern the Spleen, for that organ provides immediately-available energy, not "reserve" energy, and the sacral chakra is actually located several inches below the navel.
115

The Solar Chakra THE SOLAR CHAKRA funnels are physically located behind the midpoint of the spinal column and in front of the Solar Plexus. They are directly accessed and regulated by the acupuncture points Ren 12 ("Middle Cavity") and Du 7 ("Middle Axis"). This energy center governs, and is affected by, the emotions. It is a direct gateway onto the astral plane. A self-respecting yogi would never exit the physical body through the Solar Plexus, although people do it all the time. Its color is commonly said to be Yellow, although this is another, popular misconception. Its essential color is actually Green, but this is always offset with Yellow. It looks like a "bull'seye" target. The presence of orange flecks indicates Irritation or Anxiety.

Areas of Red denote Rage or Anger ("Liver Fire"). It is associated with two symbols: A Green Spiral (for visualization purposes) and a green-yellow target (as it actually appears). This chakra governs the liver, gall bladder, stomach and spleen, and provides immediately-available energy in terms of "Let's get up and go!
116

The solar plexus energy (Zhong Chi) is often depleted or deficient in modern, civilized people due to what the Chinese call "improper diet" (junk food) and "impure food" (including alcohol). It is also congested because of bad tempers and angry attitudes. This ten-petaled lotus also governs the pancreas, and it is associated with the "Soma-Zero" point (an acupoint that floats, but is usually around Ren 12). This point is the dynamic balancing fulcruum of the totality of the human energy system. This accounts for several of its designations, including middle, central, and solar.

The Heart Chakra THE HEART CHAKRA funnels are physically located behind the Heart and in front of the Heart. This center is accessed and regulated via the acupuncture points Ren 17 ("Chest Center") and Du 11 ("Spirit's Path"). The heart energy governs the so-called "holistic neurocircuit," and is attributed to "spiritual endeavors." It is a direct gateway onto the higher mental plane and is the seat of compassion and euphoria. Its color is commonly said to be Green, and we examined that misconception earlier in this Essay. Its color is Gold, but is often called Golden-Yellow. It looks like a Sun. There is a technique, particularly applicable to Guru Yoga and Bhakti Yoga, wherein the practitioner builds a small compartment within his or her own Heart Chakra. Within this compartment, he or she maintains an image of his or her Guru, or an image of the deity to whom he or she is devoted.
117

The presence of dark spots, resembling sunspots, indicates impediments to the full energetic awareness of the "Spirit" consciousness. These spots are called Karma. This center is associated with two symbols: A Yellow Cross (for visualization purposes) and a Solar Disc (as it actually appears). The twelve-pealed lotus governs the Heart (consciousness).

The Throat Chakra THE THROAT CHAKRA funnels are physically located behind the Neck and in front of the Throat. They are accessed and regulated by the acupuncture points Ren 22 ("Heaven's Prominence") and Du 15 ("Mute's Door"). This energy center governs expression, both in speech and mannerisms. It is related to the more elevated subplanes of the higher mental plane (the causal plane). Its color is Blue, enhanced with Silver threads, which may weave a subtle pattern or coalesce into specific symbols.
118

This center is associated with two symbols: A Blue Crescent (for visualization purposes) and an Hourglass (which describes its function).

The sixteen-pealed lotus governs the Throat, including the thyroid and parathyroid endocrine glands (metabolic rate).

The Brow Chakra THE BROW CHAKRA funnels are physically located behind the Head and in front of the Brow. They are accessed and regulated by the acupuncture points Yintang ("Seal Hall" or "Hall of Impression") and Du 17 ("Window to the Mind"). Many people believe the brow chakra is centered in the forehead, but its center is actually located between the eyebrows. This energy center is also called "the third eye" as it is the seat of visualization and imagery. It is a gateway onto the Buddhic (intuitional) plane and is receptive to "impression" from higher (Atmic or Atomic) sources.
119

There is a Star image associated with this center, both looking inward and gazing outward. The internal Star is dealt with more fully in the Chapter on Illumination. Many people have had a fleeting vision of the external Star, but when they "go looking for it directly in front of their eyes, it disappears! Rather, one must look up a bit (without actually raising the eyes), and the Star appears just above what would be considered the normal range of vision. So you really need to be looking with the "third eye." Its color is Indigo, and it looks somewhat like an Eye flanked by two wings.

This center is associated with two symbols: An Indigo Hexagram or Hexagon (for visualization purposes) and a Winged Disc (as it actually appears when enhanced with wings or petals). A third symbol is simply its true nature, a point of light a Star.

Modern medical science has dubbed the Pineal gland, the "third eye," but that was because it anatomically appeared to be approximately the same shape as an eyeball. So, don't get confused. The brow chakra is the "third eye" of mysticism, and it is associated with the Pituitary (the so-called "master gland"). This two-pealed lotus governs the ability to see, both externally and internally.
120

The Crown Chakra THE CROWN CHAKRA funnel is physically located at the top of the head (the "crown"). It is accessed and regulated by the acupuncture point Du 20 ("The Hundred Meetings" - so called because all the energetic channels [the nadis] converge and meet at this point) . This energy center governs spiritual consciousness. It is a direct gateway onto the monadic plane (the "Adi" or Ain Soph Aur). Its color is Violet, but it is also the source of the rainbow radiance seen in the aura of the realized adept. This specific radiance is examined closely in the next Chapter on Illumination.

This center is associated with two symbols: A Violet Lotus (for visualization purposes) and a multi-colored White Diamond (as it actually appears). The thousand-pealed lotus governs the Pineal gland, and thus influences both the Pituitary gland and the entire body.
121

The Eighth Chakra THE EIGHTH CHAKRA is physically located about two feet above the "crown." The meaning of it, and its location, are highly controversial. It is neither accessed nor regulated by acupuncture points, unless one has activated the crown chakra and then energetically focuses about two feet above Du 20 ("The Hundred Meetings"). The designation of two feet is arbitrary and approximate, for some individuals in an expanded state of awareness have manifested this chakras location at two hundred feet. Were not in Kansas anymore, Toto! xv This is a gateway to the cosmic astral plane, which also is the realm of Ain Soph Aur on the Tree of Life.

This chakra is dark, that is, it is barely perceptible except for a dim outline. This is the realm of the UFOs and it is the plane of the archetypal deities as described in the works of Kenneth Grant.
122

This is also the realm of work for the Nirmanakayas, the planetary creative Contemplatives, who are said to be the Custodians of the Plan [the energetic blueprint].

Nirmanakayas are said to function in deep meditation at a point midway between the Hierarchy [at Kether the crown chakra, and Tiphereth the heart chakra] and Shamballa [at Ain Soph the ninth chakra] - so this much higher group of Ray Lords [secret chiefs] functions in the deepest cosmic meditation between our planet and extraterrestrial [or cosmic] realms. xvi

The color of the eighth center is said to be Ultraviolet. It is the light higher than eyesight. The eclipsed light (a dim glow), which makes this center visible, radiates in the orange-gold subplane of the ultraviolet band. 2 This ultraviolet range concept should be considered an allegory, a metaphor, a parable. It merely gives a dim description of a dim realm known to metaphysicians as the realm beyond the planetary ring pass-not.

The frequency range would be from 7.5 x 1014 cps [Hz] to 3 x 1016 cps [Hz]. 123

The Ninth Chakra THE NINTH CHAKRA is physically located three feet above the "crown," speaking energetically for the purpose of acupuncture therapy or energetic work such as qi gong. This is the Blazing Diamond - the higher holographic version of the "eye" that is portrayed within the triangle. This is a gateway to the cosmic mental plane, which also is known as the realm of Ain Soph on the Tree of Life. This chakra is dazzling, that is, it is a brilliant source of clear light. The only thing visible to human consciousness is the radioactive furnace, dazzling high up above one's head, which pretty much looks just like the star, Sirius, when viewed in the external, three-dimensional world low in the eastern sky on a clear, moonless night. This is the realm of the so-called Great White Lodge, which is said to overshadow Shamballa, an energetic title of this ninth chakra. This is the province of Sirius as described by Alice Bailey, Dion Fortune, and Kenneth Grant. The ninth center can be compared with the radioactive gamma and x-ray frequencies, whose photons are able to pass through matter.
124

The Tenth Chakra THE TENTH CHAKRA is physically located seventeen feet above the "crown," speaking symbolically. This is comparable to the cosmic buddhic plane - the higher holographic version of which Binah is a reflection. Although the hara line seemingly has an infinite number of centers in extension above the crown, consciousness can exit the top of the line through a gateway that leads to cosmic pralaya, wherein there is nothing but the metaphor of a dancing Shiva Nataraja, not as a man, but as a vibrating X at its gateway.

The deepest recesses of your consciousness directly intersect Spirit itself, in that supreme identity This is not a state you are bringing into existence for the first time, but simply a timeless state that you are recognizing Spirit manifests in all four quadrants equally, and so all ought to be taken into account in order for the realization of Spirit to be full and complete and unbroken ... the essential point is that they disclose deeper or higher stages of consciousness, to the point that the individual I discovers its prior identity with Spirit, however you wish to conceive that. The Buddhists would say that the individual I discovers its prior nature as Emptiness
125

The Sufis call it The Supreme Identity In Zen we have the True Self that is no-self, or no individuality self at all, this primordial Emptiness that is the transparency of all Form. Ken Wilbur xvii
This is known as Ain on the Tree of Life. The tenth center can be compared to the phenomena of cosmic rays.

Chapter 11

Illumination
T HE PERCEPTION
OF

L IGHT

ILLUMINATION is: The act of illuminating; The state of being illuminated; A source of light; Decorative lighting; Spiritual or intellectual enlightenment; Clarification or elucidation. - thefreedictionary.com
I LLUMINATED means "lit up with light." Illumination means "the process of giving off light." Enlightened means "being in light" or refers to "seeing the light." Advanced spiritual beings radiate more light than normal humans, and that light can often be seen or felt by the common person. Such "realized" adepts are said to be illumined. Thus, much of the terminology that refers to the attainment of higher, expanded levels of consciousness is associated with Light. This light is both internal and external. Let's examine each case by itself ...
127

Internal Illumination Aside from the various colors and images, which the practitioner may perceive in relation to his or her energy field and/or chakras, there are two distinct sources of Light that are commonly seen. These are the Heart and the Head.

Light in the Heart THE LIGHT IN THE HEART is usually seen as a golden glow. This can be anything from a glow, a candle flame, a roaring fire, to a blazing sun-like radiance. The Flame in the Heart is often used as an object of dharana.

Light in the Head THE LIGHT IN THE HEAD is a bit more complex. There is a Star image associated with the brow (ajna) center, when looking either inward (Binah) or outward (Chokmah). There is also a Star image associated with the crown center, again, both looking inward and outward, although these directions will easily lose their meaning.
128

The external crown Star, seen directly over the top of the head, can be associated with the crown chakra, and also with the ninth chakra. There is an esoteric connection here between the eighth and ninth chakras and the star, Sirius. But right now we are looking at the Internal Star or the "Light in the Head." If you were to look inward from the brow chakra, a light can be seen. This is a tricky technique. The eyes are physically "rolled up" and then the vision is directed backward towards the brain and a light is seen. Of course, the physical eyeballs dont really look directly backward, but this gesture assists as a physiological catalyst that promotes inner vision. However, if the eyes are simply rolled straight up, there is a certain physical strain placed upon the ocular muscles and the light may not appear. The proper method is to close the eyelids, stare straight ahead, then roll the eyes around the orbital socket until looking upward (like the hands of a clock moving up to 12:00) then the vision can be directed backward with ease. This particular technique is aimed at the pituitary gland, which is the physical seat of the brow chakra. This light may merely be a "glow," or it may be "star-like." But the actual Light in the Head is a different matter: It is said to be dependent upon the relationship between the electromagnetic fields of the crown center and the brow center. After a period of time, during which the aspirant makes definite progress is his or her meditation practices, the radiatory effect of the two head centers is reported to eventually become so strong that these two vibrations will impinge upon each others field of action and a unified electromagnetic field will be created. This will become so powerful, brilliant, and pronounced that the meditator, when closing his or her eyes, cannot fail to see it. Eventually, it will affect the optic nerve and activate the subtle aspects of physical vision. There is no way to prove any of this.
129

One will then be able to see etherically and view the etheric counterpart of any physical object. This is a physiological ability and not a "psychic power" or "clairvoyance." This "seeing the light" falls into specific, sequential stages and occurs at definite points in the initiatory development of a human being, but it is most likely found to occur during the earlier stages. Thus, the light in the head is described as the result of an energetic bridge-building process, a realistic metaphor that is seen in several ways and locations throughout the aspirant's etheric and physical vehicles.

External Illumination THERE IS A LIGHT around the Head of adepts that can often be seen, sometimes even by "normal" people. This light is an externalization into the energy field (aura) from the internal Light in the Head. It may be seen in various colors, but its essence is Gold.
130

It is the source of paintings that show a "halo" around the head of Saints, with the common hoop-like halo of cartoon characters being a simple portrayal of this radiance. There is also a Light around the entire body in everyone, commonly known as the Aura. All people normally exhibit an electromagnetic radiation that extends in all directions for approximately seventeen feet (at rest) and displays various bands, patterns, images and colors. But in the enlightened yogi, or adept, this energy field can be greatly expanded, far beyond the range demonstrated by undeveloped individuals, and its symmetrical bands and colors are much higher in brightness and in hue (they are more pastel). The term "Aura" is derived from Aurum, which means "Gold."

Although ability in aura-seeing (auravoyance) is a physiological siddhi, and seemingly not required in any spiritual system, it is nonetheless a rather valuable instrument for assessing spiritual status, energetic healing work, acupuncture, psychology and medical diagnosis. Detailed information on the human energy field can be seen at the ENDNOTE > xviii The enhanced radiation of light comes about as a result of another example of spiritual bridge-building, namely the
131

The Rainbow Bridge THE MECHANISM of enlightenment and radiation depends on the spiritual journey, the walking of the "path." This path is actually a highway of light that is built in meditation. It is an actual, energetic channel that connects the heart center with the crown chakra. This pathway has many names, including The Lighted Way and The Rainbow Bridge. The Tibetans call it the Antahkarana.

Through meditative effort, a connection is built that leads from the heart to the head. When that connection is completed, cosmic consciousness and human consciousness unite. The effect of this union is the rising of the kundalini from the base chakra, all the way up to the crown, where its energy breaks forth in a rainbowcolored pattern in the adept's energy field. Light in Extension SOME HIGHLY-ADVANCED ADEPTS appear to radiate energy for seemingly unbelievable distances. For example, at the time of his passing into Nirvana, Siddhartha, who became the Gautama Buddha, was said to have an aura that extended for two hundred miles. But then, none of us were there to see that. So, who's to say?
132

However, some of us were there when certain, modern adepts displayed their consciousness and their energy fields ...

Living Examples MANY ACCOUNTS of illumined beings have been recounted in myths, legends, histories, books and motion pictures. The author has had the opportunity to be with Lama Govinda, Alan Watts, Rolling Thunder, Black Elk, Timothy Leary, Robert Anton Wilson, and a number of other well-known exponents. Their auras were somewhat disappointing when compared to what one might expect from such illustrious beings. The following are descriptions of the energy field radiation of a few people whom your author has actually encountered, and who were able to "deliver the goods" in an amazing display of illumination. The "Legendary" Jack Schwarz
xix

JACK SCHWARZ had an aura that was crystal clear with a slightly gold tinge, much like looking into the solar disk. It completely filled any room in which he was lecturing, and it activated and energized the energy field of anyone in attendance. The author remembers that, During a recess in our activities, I sat down next to him on a bench (thus placing myself within ten inches of him). My entire physical body became intensely electrified with a radioactive sensation, and when I reached down to pet his little dog, I noticed that I could not tell where I ended and the dog began. He was, indeed, the man with the x-ray vision.
133

Hunbatz Men xx HUNBATZ MEN is a Mayan Elder, proclaimed by some to be the leader of the indigenous Mayan culture that still exists in Mexico. As he was speaking one summer evening, explaining the subtleties of various dimensions, he asked, "Do you want to see me shift dimensions?" Of course, everyone said, "Yes!" He was simply standing erect, dressed in the simple white garb of an Indian peasant. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and shifted into another dimension. He did not disappear, but the energy level in the room went up several notches. His energy field became expanded and very clear. His aura radiated a sensation of floating - of being "lightened" and lifted up. The Conference in La Jolla

La Jolla had the highest home prices in the nation in 2009, the average price of a fourbedroom home being $1.842 million.
ONCE UPON A TIME, around 1994, there was a two-day Conference in La Jolla, California. It was designed to bring together and present a number of people who were supposedly enlightened, and who would actually speak to the audience. This was a great opportunity to see some enlightened auras. Three people qualified
134

Purple laced with Silver A RELATIVELY YOUNG, American lady, whose name has escaped, was a meditation teacher. She took to the podium and spoke a few words. Her aura was rather expanded, but the chief quality of this energy field was its perfect steadiness and a perfectly clear, deep Purple radiation, tinged at the edges with a Silver corona.

The Rainbow Baba AS ANOTHER PERSON was speaking, an elderly man entered the council chamber. He was rather small, dressed in white clothing, obviously of origin in the Indian subcontinent or thereabouts. He appeared to be completely lost and bewildered
135

As he moved uncertainly up the aisle toward the speaker's platform, people were heard to whisper excitedly, "Baba is here !" and to exclaim aloud, "Look! It's Baba!" He clasped his palms together and gave little bows to various people as he hesitantly moved forward. We had absolutely no idea who Baba 3 was, but these other people obviously knew and recognized him. Through all of this he wore a broad smile, as though he were thoroughly enjoying himself and was wonderfully amazed at everything he beheld. Sitting up on the stage, the Mistress of Ceremonies saw Baba and motioned for him to come on up - which he did. Someone pulled a chair out for him, but he looked at it as if he had never before seen such a thing. He simply sat down on the floor right next to the Mistress and took her hand in his. He was not introduced. He just sat there, grinning, as he looked out upon the audience. He appeared to be a simpleton. The energy radiating from him was absolutely astounding. Perfectly concentric circles of various colors radiated out across the large room in pastel, rainbow hues. Although the "rainbow bridge" usually appears arched over the head of an adept, we can attest to the fact that, in its full-blown form, the radiant rainbow of light completely dominates and fills out the entire energy field.

Francis Lucille ON THE SECOND DAY of the Conference, the main event turned out to be Francis Lucille.
3

Baba is an affectionate term applied to many people. It means father, grandfather, or holy man. 136

From over his head, what is described as energy from another dimension radiated down into him, and then radiated out in a powerful wave that filled the room. Several people, receiving the full impact of this energy, immediately dropped their heads (as if going to sleep) and then repeatedly jerked their heads back up (awake) again. They were nodding out. After that, we went several times to meet with Francis in small groups. Each and every time, the exact same pattern was perceived in his energy field: He would sit down, compose himself, take a deep breath, and close his eyes. Within ten seconds, a wave of extraordinarily powerful energy would radiate out from him and fill the room. This energy was perfectly clear, but it had one, specific quality - It was filled with golden, rapidly-rotating, scimitar shapes (like little crescent moons) that would simply cut right through any and all other energy fields. The effect was the immediate dispersal of any heavy, negative vibrations that one might be harboring. His aura was not necessarily electrifying or energizing. It was simply strong, powerful and terribly deep.

The Last Two Vibrations NOW THERE ARE only two final energy fields to discuss. Penultimatum Since the author, Frater Shiva, has been so critically bold in his assessment of other people, it is only fair that his aura should be displayed so that you might know where he is coming from. Being entirely too modest to hold himself up for review, as perceived by himself,, he has asked another competent clairvoyant to describe his energy field ...
137

"Blue and Gold. An absolutely cold, ice blue with a golden corona and gold-flecks radiating throughout, similar to Lapis Lazuli. "At a deeper level, the energy is such a deep, deep blue that it appears to be purely black. It's like a Black Sun! 4

"Here, look, said the reader, I just now finished reading a perfect description in this book. It may be hard for some people to understand, but it says

"Another light is then perceived, the clear cold light which is not light but darkness in its purest purity - the LIGHT of God Himself. It renders dark all else beside Itself; all forms fade out and yet the whole of life is there. It is not light as we know light. It is that pure essential essence of that Light which reveals Itself through light." - Bailey xxi
"And that's it ..." she said. And so, I guess, that's it. Jack Schwarz, in his quaint Dutch accent, once said to the author, "Yours is the second ray, Azure Blue and Electric Gold. You know, we come from the same place, you and I. Its color is Black. And our job is to teach higher consciousness." Ultimatum OUR FINAL CASE of Living Examples is You ! You are a complex, multi-dimensional holon, 5 who can be compared unto a Tree
4

The reader was not aware of the phrase, See the Black Sun Rise from the Solar Lodge lyrics from Solar Lodge 1984 by Coil. The term, holon, identifies a unit with parts that simultaneously are selfcontained wholes to their subordinated parts, and dependent parts when seen from the inverse direction. 138

Thats you, the physical human person , in the bottom circle (sphere), divided up into four sections. Earth (solids) Water (liquids) - Air (gases) Fire (electrical ) The next circle up is your astral body. It turns out (later) that this is merely an intermediate body, and that the astral plane and your astral aura are merely glamorous illusion.

139

But on your elevator ride up the middle pillar, the hara line, the central channel, you may access your astral body by allowing your awareness (your sense of I) to travel up the tunnel overhead.

This tunnel actually exists. It is routinely described by people who have out-of-the-body experiences, or who have a near-death encounter in a surgical theater. The individual then travels up the tunnel to the end, where he or she meets an angel or their deceased parents or friends. Invariably, they choose - or are told - to return. They have met others on the astral plane. You can visit this realm. What you encounter there, you will radiate out into your astral aura (about eighteen inches). In fact, what you are encountering on this plane at all times is simply sensed in your emotional-feeling nature, and can be seen in your astral aura. The task of the grade, so to speak, is to stabilize your emotional nature, so that no glamorous entities arise and your astral aura shows forth in balanced, luminous patterns. This tunnel and this process are reflected in the twenty-second Tarot Trump: Atu XXI The World or the Universe. Complete success would be measured against a perfectly clear, translucent astral body or aura. THE NEXT CIRCLE (sphere) up the central line is your causal or soul body. Again, it turns out (later) that this is another case of an intermediate body, and that the mental plane and your causal aura are illusion, although that deception is said to endure for aeons, ages and epochs a long time.
140

However, on your ascent up the central line, you will access your causal body by causing (or allowing) your awareness to align, and thus attain a perfect balance whose net weight is zero.

In this case, its not so much a tunnel, because its more like finding the opening in a veil or a curtain. This opening (or split) actually exists as a gap in consciousness. It is sometimes described by adepts in conjunction with the Veil of Paroketh. When it opens, and it will only open for an aligned persona, you will pass through the opening in the curtain, where you may encounter various visions, especially the one of the Sun or the source of the radiant, whitish-gold Light. You have met yourself on the higher mental plane. Whatever you encounter here, you will radiate out into your causal aura (about five feet). In fact, what you are experiencing on this plane at all times is sensed in your egoic lotus, within your heart, and can be seen in your causal aura. Any sunspots or symbols seen in your causal aura are said to be your karma. These things must be cleared or burned-off. The task of the grade is to burn up your karma with the light of the soul, so that nothing remains but a clear, radiant causal aura. Entrance to this process, is reflected in the eighteenth Tarot Trump, Atu XVI titled Temperance or Art - the magical practice of which is called Rising on the Planes, but whose mystical practice is known as alignment. Complete success would be measured against a perfectly clear, translucent causal body or aura.
141

THE UPPERMOST CIRCLE (sphere) on the central line is your Monad, the central core of your higher self. And even again, it may (ultimately) turn out that this is a further matter of an intermediate body, and that the entire cosmic physical plane (the Tree of Life) and your Monad are illusion. Yet there is a holographic concept that says

Kether , in any given dimension, is the Tiphereth of the next-expanded holon

T HE HOLOGRAPHIC T REE

LIFE

Access to the Crown is gained via the Antahkarana. This Lighted Way directly correlates with the third Tarot Trump, Atu II known as The High Priestess. What you are at this level of consciousness at all times is registered in your Monad, deep within your head, and can be seen in your outermost, cosmic aura (seventeen feet in radius when at rest). This is the deepest, and most expanded, sphere of your energy field.

The Symbology of Numbers

NUMBERS are an expression of the universal geometry. Examples of numbers in the external world abound in nature:

A man has five fingers on each hand. An image of the Sun or a star, or any point of light captured on film or diffracted from a polished gemstone, usually displays six rays. A rainbow exhibits seven distinct colors.

For amusement and wonderment, pictures of various geometric crop circle designs are included within the following discussions.

THE NUMBER ZERO () represents nothingness, emptiness, or perfect balance. Intellectually, it is a difficult notion to grasp. Zero can be compared to the Taoist notion of Tao, and to the ancient Greek concept of Chaos, which derived from Gas and implied the nothingness of pure energy from which all manifestation issues. Due to the misunderstanding of early Christian translators, the meaning of Chaos has changed to mean "disorder," which has nothing to do with the original concept. Creation is expressed in the Zero equals Two equation (=2), which refers to nothingness producing a matched pair of opposites. Modern astrophysics has confirmed this equation through the observation of Black Holes.
149

A Black Hole is surrounded by an Event Horizon, the equivalent of a magic circle. Inside the Horizon, nothing escapes the potent gravity of the Black Hole. Outside the Horizon, nothing is directly influenced by the Black Hole. However, energy is constantly being emitted from the Hole. Paired, ionized (positive and negative) particles are thrown out of the Black Hole and past the Event Horizon. Then, one of four scenarios is enacted: 1. Both ions (positive and negative) fall back into the Black Hole. 2. The positive ion escapes, but the negative ion falls back into the Hole. 3. The negative ion escapes, but the positive ion falls back into the Hole. 4. Both particles (positive and negative) escape. However we look at it, the net effect is that a Black Hole () is constantly adding energy to the Universe. ZERO can be identified with the mystical states of Nirvana, Samadhi and Satori, etc., wherein all duality (i.e., the seer and the thing seen) disappear.
150

It is unlikely that the magician will enact an entire ceremony based on the number , although that should be the numerical equivalent of the thoughtforms remaining within the circle after a thorough banishing or a successful meditation.

1
THE NUMBER ONE (1) represents unity. It is an illusion. In mundane numerology, it is the number of the lonely pioneer. One can be correlated to the concept of a single unit, and it has many uses in mathematics. But when the mystic cries out, "It is all one!" he is falling short of the true picture. We have seen that creation is =2, there being no place for a "1." Likewise, when the mystic synthesizes duality and enters Samadhi (2= ), the transition is direct and, again, there is no place for a "1." It is unlikely that the magician will enact an entire ceremony based on the number 1, although that should be the numerical equivalent of his or her intent, or the one-pointed concentration.

2
THE NUMBER TWO (2) represents duality. It is illusion itself. But it is also the basis for further creation (of more illusion). In mundane numerology, TWO is the number of the diplomat. TWO can be correlated to the concept of a dual unit. This embodies all possible opposites, including light-dark, male-female, yin-yang, hot-cold, god-devil, et cetera ad infinitum.
151

The positive-negative units in any these dual units are both opposite and complimentary. No unit(y) can exist without its antipode. So, creation is =2, there being no place for a "1." It is unlikely that the magician will enact an entire ceremony based on the number 2, but supposedly it could be done.

3
THE NUMBER THREE (3) represents the trinity. THE TRIUNE FORCE is a further creation (of more illusion), because when two (2) opposites unite, the result is a third unit. Thus, something new has been created. In mundane numerology, THREE is the number of the creative artist, the musician or the actor.

152

GO DOWN FOUR HOLONS 1 AND IT BECOMES REALLY SIMPLE THREE can be correlated to the concept of a triple unit. This embodies all possible expressions of the triad, including protonelectron-neutron, father-mother-child, persona-soul-spirit, IsisOsiris-Horus, Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva, Father-Son-Holy Spirit, the three officers in a ceremonial initiation, et cetera.

The Holy Spirit is often referred to as the Holy Ghost, which is an interesting term. However, it is merely a mask over the face of the feminine energy.
1

A holon is a holographic particle at a specific level. Going down four holons implies Human > Physiological Organ System > Cells > Molecules > Atoms (the elements). Hydrogen, the simplest element, is explosive it contains one proton (+), one electron (-) and one neutron (). It can be seen in action by glancing at the sun only the quickest glance please, to avoid retinal damage. 153

The priests of Amoun-Ra and Osiris, now primarily known in the west as Christians, have gone to great lengths in order to conceal and repress female involvement in their theology.

It is unlikely that the magician will enact an entire ceremony based on the number 3, although it is possible, especially in the rite of The Lion and the Eagle.

4
THE NUMBER FOUR (4) represents solidity, matter and practicality. FOUR can be expressed as a square or a cross. This symbolizes all expressions of the quaternary, including the four directions, the four dimensions, the four elements, four walls, and so forth. ATOMS OF GOLD PRESENT THEMSELVES IN A SQUARE (CUBOIDAL) SHAPE >
154

The four elements are relegated to the four directions. But hardly anyone agrees with anyone else about the attributions. One set of western correspondences is: water-blue-north air-yellow-west

fire-red-south The number four is supposed to be solid, practical, and fixed. However, each culture seems to have its own version of these directions and correspondences. F OR EXAMPLE , SEE T HE M AYAN D REAMSPELL ARRANGEMENT > Gold atoms fit together like blocks, and their smooth surfaces are aligned this allows the gold to be worked - the term is

Malleable
In fact, the four element system is also quite slippery and malleable due its quality of being easily manipulated. One may conveniently utilize the four directions as long as one agrees with one's self about the correspondences and doesn't get stuck in the illusion that there is a cosmic significance inherent in any particular arrangement or set of correspondences. Beware of the tendency to pick one set of correspondences, saying, "This is the true four-element configuration, and the others are in error." In mundane numerology, FOUR is the number of the mechanic. It is quite likely that the magician may enact a ceremony based on the number 4, for this is a very common arrangement - perhaps the most common.

155

5
THE NUMBER FIVE (5) represents action, travel, conflict and war. It is the Microcosm. FIVE can be expressed as a pentagram or pentagon. This represents the human form (two arms, two legs, and a head). When a pentagram is pointed downward, it is said to represent the devil. Since there really is no such being as the devil, except in our own egos, we should recognize it to merely be the symbol of man with his head directed toward matter and materialism.

The US Army and Air Force, the Red Army, and many police badges (especially older versions) all utilize a five-pointed star.
T HE US
MILITARY HEADQUARTERS IS LOCATED IN A FIVE - SIDED BUILDING , THE

PENTAGON >

The five elements are sometimes relegated to the four directions, plus one called Aethyr or Spirit in the center. Aethyr is defined as "the matrix, or space, within which the four elements are manifesting."
156

The problem with this arrangement is that same instability we encountered with the four elements - nothing has changed, except a fifth "element" has been added in the center. The five elements can also be arranged in a pentagonal fashion. The problem with this arrangement is that it usually cannot be harnessed and used for practical purposes. Like the number four (4), the unstable placement of the five (5) elements is arbitrary. For efficient practicality, we must look to the Chinese version

They call their system the five phases, implying that there is only one Qi (Chi), one energy, that undergoes five consecutive and recurring transformations (phases). The order of transformation is exact. There is no arbitrary changing of positions.
157

The five phases stand supreme for interpreting phenomena in nature and in human beings, especially when used for medical diagnosis and treatment. In mundane numerology, FIVE is the number of the warrior and the traveler. In general terms, it is the number of a human.

It is likely that the magician might enact a ceremony based on the number 5, as this is a common arrangement.

6
THE NUMBER SIX (6) represents harmony and the macrocosm. THE NUMBER SIX is man - the microcosm (the little world), as we have seen. The number SIX is god - the macrocosm (the big world). SIX is symbolized as a hexagram or hexagon. The hexagram depicts two interlaced or overlapping triangles - the ascending triangle represents the three-fold, aspiring human (body-emotionsmind), while the descending triangle is the cosmic force (causal-intuition-spirit). THIS DESIGN IS COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH AN ANCIENT TANTRIC SEX MAGIC SYMBOL, A QABALISTIC SYMBOL, THE STAR OF DAVID, SOLOMON'S SEAL, AND THE SIGN OF JUDAISM
158

However, this has always been an universal symbol - with the Jewish association developing gradually. It began as the symbol of the Jewish community in Prague in the 17th century and only became generally recognized as the symbol of the Jews in the 19th century.

The standard hexagram cannot be drawn in one continuous line, but must be constructed from two separate triangles. Unicursal (one-line) forms are convenient for ritual work, as symbols are traced in the air with magical instruments, and a unicursal hexagram was devised for this reason by a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn. In mundane numerology, SIX is the number of the professional and of responsibility. In general terms, it is the number of doctors, and of god, but only when compared to the number five.

It is possible that a magician might enact a ceremony based on the number 6, although this is not necessarily a common arrangement. It would be proper to a rite of Tiphereth and the Solar Angel.
159

7
THE NUMBER SEVEN (7) depicts the levels of consciousness and is a symbol often used to represent the feminine. SEVEN is portrayed as a septagram or septagon. A septagram is the seven-pointed star, a symbol of synthesis and mystery. Seven is an integrating number, encapsulating as it does the hierarchical orders of classical mystical thought: There are seven planetary spheres governed by the seven planets of classical astrology, seven colors in the rainbow, seven days of the week, seven chakras (centers) in a human form, seven distinct energy fields in the aura, and seven notes in a diatonic musical scale. 2 SEVEN and the septagram can be considered as representing the sum of Heaven and Earth, alluding to the seven directions of space, with two directions for each dimension plus the center. In mundane numerology, it is the number of the philosopher or the librarian that represents a withdrawn person who likes to read a lot (and be left alone). In more general terms, it is the number of metaphysics. It is probable that a magician might enact a ceremony based on the number 7.
2

However, the Chinese musical scale only has five notes. 160

8
THE NUMBER EIGHT (8) depicts fullness and is a symbol of prosperity.

common symbol for infinity that takes the form of a figure eight on its side, and through its correlation with the eight primal deities of ancient Aegypt, the ogdoad:

The octagram's associated polygon, the octagon, is intermediate between a square and a circle, moving fixed manifestation towards the infinite, and confirming the sense of spiritual regeneration. For this reason, many baptismal fonts are octagonal.

In mundane numerology, EIGHT is the number of the businessman or businesswoman.

It is possible that a magician might enact a ceremony based on the number 8, especially considering that eight is a common number when the four directions are divided.
162

9
THE NUMBER NINE (9) depicts completeness and is a symbol of initiation. influenced by 9 (through their name or by a date) are often unfathomable by persons ruled by other numbers. Nine is composed of a trinity of trinities (3 x 3), thus it represents the utmost sacredness. The nine points of the nonagram radiate all these connotations. There are nine known planets in the solar system and nine Muses of Greek mythology.

Nine is the number of deities in the Great Ennead of Heliopolis, headed by Path and followed by Shu and Tefnut (the deities of air and moisture), Geb and Nut (earth and sky), Osiris and Isis, and Set and Nephthys. In mundane numerology, NINE is the number of the spiritualist. It is possible that a magician might enact a ceremony based on the number 9, although this is not necessarily a common arrangement.
163

ADDENDUM

10
THE NUMBER TEN (10) depicts a result and is a symbol of the material world. In mundane numerology, TEN does not exist - for the temporal system deals only with the single digits, 1 through 9. Thus 10 (1 + 0) is reduced (10 = 1 + 0 = 1). In Qabalistic terms, TEN is Malkuth (the Kingdom) and is not considered to be a principle of, but rather an appendage to, the Tree of Life - It is suspended below the nine principles of the Tree and it is where all the higher forces manifest and come to bear. Welcome to Planet Earth!

It is possible that a magician might very well enact a ceremony based on the number 10, especially when the temple is horizontally oriented with ten altars positioned according the shape of the Tree of Life.

Tables of Correspondence
T HE T ABLES OF C ORRESPONDENCE refer to an intellectual exercise. Correspondences are used to catalog and arrange the contents of the concrete mind. They are not the actual concepts or items themselves, and they are widely subject to variation according to the individual user. Correspondences are mental linkages wherein any item can be correlated or equated to other items that fit within the same specific category. There are many formats.

The Big QBL

QBL
IS A

HEBREW WORD MEANING TO RECEIVE

QBL is the root of words like Qabalah or Kaballah. 3 This refers to a process of direct perception of truth. It is similar in meaning to the terms Gnostic and Jnana yoga. There is also a written Qabalah. 4 This is composed of many books, scrolls, tables, sheets of paper or computer data, A large, full-range, Qabalistic Table will list the words or names associated with all numbers, normally limited to One [1] through the Thousands [3,200+], but theoretically leading up to Infinity. Each number is correlated with all the words adding up to that number. There are Tables for learning the letters and numbers.

An amusing example would be "LSD" L = 30, S = 60, D = 4 LSD = 94

There are many English spellings of QBL in use. There are many versions of lbQ [QBL] Tables in use. Sepher Sephiroth by Bennett and Crowley is an excellent introduction. Each aspirant must build his or her own Qabalah 167

ATU
IS AN

WORD MEANING

K EY OR KEYS OR TRUMP

A T RUMP SUIT , in cards, outranks all other suits. The Tarot Trump Cards, the Atu of Tahuti, are said to be the Keys to the Mysteries. There are twenty-two Atu, corresponding to the twenty-two Hebrew letters and the twenty- two Paths of the Tree of Life. This leads to a shorter, more condensed Table of Correspondence system, which is based on the Atu, wherein all numbers above 22 are reduced to their inherent number found between One [1] and twenty-two [22]. For example: The date April 8, 1904 (4-8-1904) is reduced by adding each separate digit into a sum total: 4 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 0 + 4 = 26 If the sum total is greater than 22, the figure will be further reduced: 2+6 = 8 Thus, it might be said that this date was influenced by the number 8, whose letter and sound is Ch and whose Atu is The Chariot. Any and all dates, words, personal names, magical titles, corporate designations, physical addresses, websites, emails and telephone numbers can be identified, summed up, and reduced to a single Tarot Trump card, accompanied by a differentiated dynamic symbol and an unique number. This is all interpreted into meaningful, practical insight and application, according to the level of consciousness and the perspective of the operator. Wonderful systems have been developed, 5 wherein astrological wheels are integrated with the twenty-two Atu, according to the individuals birth data and destiny. This system is for synchronizing the events of daily life with a concrete mental interpretation. It stabilizes the intellectual mind by attuning to a pantheon, which may also be from Tibet, India or Central America, according to ones genetic predisposition.

The QBL of Nine

NINE IS A NUMBER OF GREAT DEPTH AND IT IS UNFATHOMABLE A T ABLE based on the basic numbers will include only One [1] to Nine [9]. This system is the most practical when applied to the physical world. We will now examine a brief summary. In this system, all numbers higher than NINE are reduced, meaning the single digits are added together until a basic number is reached. For example: 777 = 7 + 7 + 7 = 21 = 2 + 1 = 3 Thus 777 reduces to 3 This is basic or mundane numerology. It is used to analyze birth names (birth certificate designations) and birth dates. It can also be used for nicknames, addresses, telephone numbers, etc. The individual personalities, the nature of specific addresses, and the method of interfacing with the world, are summed up in these nine TYPES: 1 The Pioneer 2 The Diplomat 3 The Creative Artist 4 The Mechanic 5 The Scientist 6 The Professional 7 The Philosopher 8 The Business Person 9 The Spiritualist TO DETERMINE FOR EXAMPLE:

Each number and color is linked to a Stone

the realm that precedes, and is "outside," the Tree of Life. This color foreshadows the Aegyptian symbol of the Nile Star (Sirius) - which is fixed in a single location (#1) at the galactic arch of our Milky Way. Its magical "instrument" is the Silence from which all manifestation proceeds. Its stone is Moldavite, not because of its (greenish translucent) color, but due to its extraterrestrial origin.

Moldavite is a green vitreous substance formed by a meteorite impact ~50,000 years ago. It was named for the town of Moldauthein, in the Czech Republic, the only place on Earth it is found. It exerts a specific physical energetic sensation when held. It is not radioactive.

INDIGO is also associated with the state of Samadhi, wherein all manifestation disappears. For our purposes, it may be (loosely) referenced to the Tao. And as for the rest of the Stones

Power Centers
T HE HUMAN BODY has chakras, electrical nerve centers, and acupuncture points. THE EARTH also has electromagnetic centers these are commonly known as vortices (singular: a vortex). These are well-known places, for they affect (disrupt or cause deviations in) navigation instruments. Oh yes, there are other magnetic deviation spots located on maps, but these are simply places where iron ore deposits cause a magnetic fluctuation in a compass. The major vortices show no signs of iron ore being involved and investigators continue to be baffled as to why they exert their unusual effects.
FAR 91.155 (Federal Aeronautic Regulations): "Approach control should be advised and a revised clearance or instruction obtained when compliance with an assigned route, heading and/or altitude is likely to compromise pilot responsibility with respect to terrain and obstruction clearance, vortex exposure, and weather minimums."

There are many lesser vortices that can be compared to the individual acupoints on the human body. Let's take a look at two vortices The Oregon Vortex This sightseer attraction has been amazing visitors since 1930. The phenomena are real and not like many other tourist traps that have copied it and rely on optical illusions to separate guests from their money. It is located in Gold Hill, Oregon, just off of Interstate 5. This vortex is a small area that fluctuates in diameter (alternately gets larger and smaller), with the diameter of the circle wherein space distortion is demonstrable being (on average) 220 feet. But the electromagnetic effects are sometimes noted in Redding, California, which is 120 miles away ! The Oregon Vortex fluctuates, but it fortunately remains stable or plugged at the center, so tourists simply don't disappear, like in the Bermuda Triangle.
179

Upon entering the site, the first thing that one might notice is that all the trees in the surrounding area grow normally straight up.

But within the vortex itself, each tree is weirdly warped in various directions.

Pilots of airplanes flying overhead risk disorientation because both magnetic and gyroscopic compasses have historically been totally disrupted up to an altitude of 40,000 feet. To make matters even more interesting, somewhere around 1990, the US Air Force flew over the vortex at 60,000 feet and noted the same effect.

180

From one point of view, the main attraction is when two people stand at opposite ends of a level board.

After noting their heights, they switch positions and the height change is markedly different.

The Oregon Vortex is privately owned. You will probably not be able to camp here and perform rituals. The Great Einstein visited the vortex. He looked around and said, "These effects are caused by a relativity shift." Thank you, Albert! He had no explanation as to why there was a shift in relativity.

The vortex is a small area that radiates an unusual energy for about a half-mile.

The center of the vortex is an inverted, pyramidal depression having four distinct sides and it is situated where one has to walk about a quarter-mile to get to the center of the pyramid. But the effects can be magically utilized for at least a half-mile away, so pedestrian access is not required.

This power center has been used many times in the past in order to perform ceremonies that were intended to gain access to higher levels of consciousness. And there is indeed a gateway here that leads to other dimensions but, luckily, tourists and magicians do not mysteriously disappear!

THE INNER TEACHER EXERCISE is designed to promote Alignment in preparation for engaging in a dialog with the Solar Angel

AN INTEGRATED VERSION of this exercise involves seeing all three centers simultaneously, as a final dharana (visual concentration). At any time, the vision may merge into dhyana (meditation). Dhyana with the Heart center may involve a verbal dialog with The Secondary Clear Light, the so-called Solar Angel. This is also known as attaining to the knowledge and conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. Dhyana with the Brow (ajna) center may involve a visual exchange of imagery with The Secondary Clear Light. This is sometimes known as attaining to the vision of the Plan. The ajna is also the center from which the practitioner projects creative energy in furtherance of the Plan, when operating in magical mode this is one definition of doing ones Will. The Plan is the so-called Spiritual Blueprint. Dhyana with the Crown center suggests a union with The Primary Clear Light and is a probable entrance into samadhi. Amusing concepts such as the notion of an individual, separate Self (lower and higher) may completely disappear. This is sometimes called union with the primordial consciousness.

188

THE EXERCISE may be expanded, at any time, to include the visual construction of the Antahkarana from the Heart to the Crown.

AN ADVANCED VERSION of this exercise, which is much more complex, involves the clearing of the three energy fields, coupled with a format for accessing the Antahkarana, the Rainbow Bridge. It is known as The Temple of the Sun.
