Johnsbury Athenaeum Tickets are $50 per person All are welcome
We are pleased to announce our plans for the largest annual fundraising event for the Athenaeum. The Hidden Treasures Gala will feature multiple displays stationed throughout the Athenaeum. We will invite our guests to discover and explore the many hidden treasures that highlight key items in our extensive collection. Some of these items have never been shown to the public. Here are examples from a few exhibits:

The Farwell Collection

Horace Fairbanks daughter Isabel married Albert Farwell and in 1890, they traveled the world. This extensive photograph collection depicts landscapes, people and buildings. The above picture shows the group in Egypt.

Rare Books
Selected books of the Poole collection, the books from the Athenaeums original collection, will be on exhibit as well as important items from bibliographer Henry Stevens, first editions of Lynd Wards classic wordless novels, Janssonius Atlases from 1640 and many examples of early chromolithographic printing.

The Civil War

In 1999 the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum received a collection of civil war materials from the estate of local Civil War historian Gerald A. Heon which is housed in the balcony and vault of the Athenaeum. The collection has over 700 items. The above picture shows the Third VT Regimental Band in 1861.

Our Special Guest! Author Howard Coffin will be joining us at the Gala to introduce and sign his new book Something Abides: Vermont Civil War Stories and Places. Howard Coffins fourth book on Vermont Civil War history lists more than 3,000 Civil War sites that survive throughout the state. Coffin is a seventh generation Vermonter with six ancestors who served in Vermont Civil War regiments. He has given more than 300 talks on the Civil War in Vermont alone, and leads tours of Civil War battlefields.

We hope you can join us! Tickets are on sale now at the Athenaeum or by mail. For additional information, call 802-748-8291. If you cannot attend, please consider sending a donation in support of the Athenaeum. Thank you!
