Essay 5
Write an essay that responds to the “This I Believe” invitation found
online at http://www.thisibelieve.org/. Write an essay of 350-500 words
exploring something that you believe. This belief may be related to
family, community, religion, science, education, doubt, or questions,
but it must be something meaningful to you, something that affects
how you live your life.

Express your belief in a clear thesis that introduces the essay. Then
support that idea with specific examples taken from your own life. Find
a way to conclude with a strong expression of how your belief matters
to you.

Develop a strong thesis, an engaging introduction, effective and

relevant supporting details, a meaningful conclusion, well constructed
paragraphs, and clear and effective sentence constructions.

We will begin Essay 5 by reading and listening to sample essays online

at http://www.thisibelieve.org/. We will hold a drafting workshop for
this essay on Thursday, 26 March; bring your planning materials to
begin drafting your essay. We will then hold a revision workshop for
Essay 5 in class on Thursday, 2 April; bring your working draft and
planning materials to participate in group revision activities. Essay 5
will be submitted electronically on Tuesday, 7 April, and graded essays
will be returned electronically before class on Tuesday, 14 April.
