Class Expectations

What you can expect from me:

1. I begin and end class on time and end on time.
2. I come to class prepared.
3. I am accessible during my office hours both in person and by phone for class and
personal business. Please use these times if the business is personal. I am usually
available right before class begins. This is my set-up time, but I can also answer
questions. If you are stuck on a homework problem, then you can contact me at
any time.
4. I will treat you with respect and offer you encouragement. I respect your decision
to continue your education. I assume you are here because you want to be.
5. I will not harass you nor knowingly embarrass you in class. However, I may call
on you to answer questions.
6. I will not countenance bigotry, racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, ageism, or any
form of religious intolerance.
7. I will not tolerate cheating on assigned work or exams. My definition of cheating
is copying someone else's work, looking at someone else's paper during an exam,
writing notes on your hands, using a book or notes when told otherwise and the
like.
8. I will be fair.
What I expect from you:
1. Responsibility for your materials. Read the section of the text we are working on
before you come to class. Bring your book and writing materials to class: paper
and pen or pencil.
2. Absence = 0 Participation Points and 0 Attendance Points. 6 Absences = Fail.
3. If you have membership training you must have your major assistant write you a
note documenting your absence at least 1 week prior to the date of the
membership training. If you do not have a note you will receive a 0 for attendance
and participation.
4. If you are absent due to sickness, medical operation or a family member dies, then
it is your responsibility to provide me with proof; this must be a signed note from
a doctor or family member.
5. Respect for others. Treat classmates and classroom visitors with courtesy.
6. Your best effort. Be responsible for your own learning.
7. Listen when others are speaking. Do not carry on private conversations during the
lectures, guest presentations or work sessions.
8. Attend lectures and labs and be on time. If you must be late, enter quietly and do
not disrupt what is in progress. Do not get up and leave the classroom in the
middle of lectures.
9. If you miss class, you are responsible for the material covered. You should first
attempt to catch up by reading the posted lecture notes, the textbook and from
your classmates. If you have specific questions about material you have missed,
then you should contact me during office hours or by email.
10. Stay for the full lecture period. I do not want to hear shuffling and book-slamming
10 minutes before the period is over. If you must leave early, sit where you can
make your exit quietly.
11. Team work: it is a requirement on the job and in this class. Computer
professionals work with colleagues, managers, clients, users, and potential
investors. You will spend as much time interacting with others as you will
working individually. When you are assigned to work with others, or choose to
work with others, work cooperatively.
12. Do all required assignments and turn them in on time. The deadlines are real.
Time management is a skill to be practiced. Practice it here. Late assignments are
not accepted.
If learning is what you do only when everything else in your life is perfect, please drop this
class. If you cannot abide these class expectations, please drop this class.
