Hi everyone and welcome to our course on time-lapse photography. I really can't thank everyone enough for teaming up together on this project. I know we are going to have a lot of fun learning together.

Here's what's coming up:
1. At this point you should have already received a copy of the course textbook.

2. Look for a revised class schedule tonight where we will map out the coming weeks in a little more detail.

3. You can always contact me with questions or comments and i'll try to get back to you ASAP. We'll certainly have time to connect and discuss question during the weekly office hour session too.

4. This week is all about gear, the first section in the book and course videos covering the different topics will be posted shortly over the next few days.

P.S. To kick this off here is one of my favorite clips on time-lapse:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gXDMoiEkyuQ

“Beauty and seduction are nature’s tools for survival because we protect what we fall in love with. It opens our hearts and makes us feel we are part of nature and we’re not separate from it.”

“You think this is just another day in your life. It’s not just another day, it’s the one day that is been given to you, today. It’s given to you. It’s a gift. It’s the only gift that you have right now, and the only appropriate response is gratefulness.

If you do nothing else but to cultivate that response through the great gift that this unique day is, if you learn to respond as if it were the first day in your life, and your last day, then you will have spent this day very well.”

Once again thanks and best of light,
-Ryan

Time-lapse Exposure settings checklist:
Heres a review o the important exposure considerations or time-lapse photography:
Shoot in ull manual mode:
Photographing in ull manual mode prevents the camera rom making independent exposure decisionsbeore each image is captured. Any drastic exposure changes in the middle o a time-lapse series might createa kind o icker and should be prevented.
Congure the ollowing exposure settings:ISO:
By deselecting automatic ISO determination and locking in a set number, we prevent the camera rom creating brighter or darker images due to changes in sensor sensitivity.
 Aperture:
By setting a specic aperture we minimize time-lapse icker by preventing the camera rom jumping rom one -stop to another. We also prevent changes in depth o eld throughout the sequenceby keeping a constant range o ocus.
Shutter Speed:
By setting a specic shutter speed we minimize time-lapse icker by preventing thecamera rom jumping rom one exposure time to another.
Focus:
By selecting manual ocus we prevent the camera rom ocus hunting as each photo is taken androm seeking a dierent ocus ranges throughout the compilation. Image stabilization o.
 White Balance:
Selecting manual white balance prevents the camera rom analyzing and adjusting eachphoto independently and avoids tint shits in the nal time-lapse compilation.
Create a little motion blur:
Since our time-lapse images are played back-to-back very rapidly, slight blurring in each individual photohelps to blend them together creating an added smoothness to the entire sequence. As a rule o thumb, try to keep your shutter speed under ~1/100th o a second. In order to get that low o a shutter in daylightconditions we will probably need to use an ND lter.
 Watch your total exposure length:
Your exposure time MUS NO exceed your interval length plus a little extra time or your camera to savethe images to your card.
Check your le ormat:
Make sure you have enough room on your card all your required time-lapse images at the image size that youselected. Do you need to save space on your memory card or other shots today?
Consider a test photo and a quick mini-lapse:
Previewing an individual exposure and possibly scrolling through a ew images in a test time-lapse mightsave a whole aternoons worth o shooting. It’s worth the extra time, trust me.

The time-lapse exposure triangle:Balancing image settings:
Shoot in the RAW image ormat:
I you can aord the large le size shooting in RAW will provide nondestructive creative control over yourimages in post production.
Shoot at high resolution:
Large images provide exibility to crop, pan, tilt, zoom, or shrink when you edit your nal video as well asthe reedom to export to dierent destinations in at the highest quality.
Plan ahead or the HD aspect ratio crop:
When shooting to export to HD video dont orget to account or about a 15% (200 pixel) crop on the topor bottom.
