Student Attendance Policy


The Reginald F. Lewis School of Business has established an attendance policy for all business courses. The following procedure is in addition to any University policies that are in effect. The Reginald F. Lewis School of Business faculty and administrators have the right to interpret this policy as they wish in their courses. The Reginald F. Lewis School of Business fully expects students to be in attendance every day that their classes meet. The only exceptions are excused University absences with official notification. It is the students responsibility to contact their professor(s), in writing, prior to being away from campus for an athletic event or other campus sanctioned activity. Written notification from the coach or faculty advisor is required at least 48 hours prior to the absence. Other absences that are considered excused: 1. Illness with a doctors excuse and student has followed University policy and contacted the Academic Success Center to document. 2. Family emergencies with the proper and official documentation and the student has followed University policy and contacted the Academic Success Center. The following are unexcused absences in the Reginald F. Lewis School of Business: One Unexcused Absence Arriving Five (5) minutes late to class is equivalent to: Not showing up at all without prior approval from instructor The instructor has the authority to lock the class at 10 minutes after start time and count you absent!! The Reginald F. Lewis School of Business faculty will adhere to the University Attendance Policy cited in the University Undergraduate Catalog on page 24 (www.vsu.edu/pages/165.asp): Classroom attendance is expected of all students. The instructor may reduce grades for students who exceed four hours of absences for a four-semester-hour course, three hours for a three hour course, two hours of absences for a twohour-course, and/or one hour for a one-hour course. Faculty members must include on the course syllabus any attendance policy that will affect grades, including tardiness and early departures. The Reginald F. Lewis School of Business policy for excessive absences is as follows: 1. Instructors have the right to lower the students earned grade by one full letter grade or a set number of points for three (3) unexcused absences in a three credit course. 2. Instructors have the right to administratively withdraw the student from the course for:

six (6) unexcused absences in a class that meets three times a week for 50 minutes each session, or b. three (3) unexcused absences in a class that meets twice a week for one hour and twenty minutes each session. 3. It is the students responsibility to contact the instructor upon their return to campus after an absence to arrange for completion of any missed work. It is up to the discretion of the instructor whether to allow a student to make up any missed assignments, exams, or projects. a.
