Counihan-Sanchez Housing Campaign (CSHC) Smash the bedroom tax! Cap rents not benefits!
It is estimated that 2,500 households in Brent will be affected by the hated bedroom tax and the benefit cap. Nationwide the bedroom tax will affect 600,000 households who face an average loss of 728 per year. The bedroom tax is targeted at poorer workers and those on benefits. It is not about saving money - nothing is being done about massive Housing Benefit payments to private landlords. People receiving benefits in Brent will lose an average of 680 per year. We need a mass campaign against the bedroom tax led by working class communities similar to the movement which defeated the Poll Tax in 1990. We need open democratic campaigns led by those affected by the cuts. According to Brent Council, 1100 families in our borough will lose an average of 100 a week as a result of the total benefit cap from July. Many of these households will be made homeless or sent out of the borough. CSHC opposes all cuts. No deals or concessions to Tory, Liberal or Labour party cutters who say they will retain the bedroom tax.
