PREFACE
This is one of a series of five cash crop case studies undertaken by the socio-economics section of ZCCFSP in Zanzibar. The main aim of these studies isto analyse the different factors which have led to local cash cropdevelopment, with a view to forming policy recommendations and devisingpractical interventions which might further facilitate and promote this kind ofdevelopment in the future. We hope that the lessons which are drawn fromthese studies will be of relevance to the Ministry as a whole, and not just toprojects like ZCCFSP whose primary interest is in encouraging sustainablecash crop production and marketing. The present study examines the development of sweet orange production inNdijani, in central Unguja. It is based upon fieldwork and library researchcarried out by the staff of the socio-economics section of ZCCFSP on Unguja. Here we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the farmers in Ndijaniwho discussed the history of sweet orange production with us, as well ascolleagues in ZCCFSP Unguja who provided additional backgroundinformation on Ndijani and its environs.Martin Walsh (ed)Socio-economics SectionZCCFSP PembaWete, August 1995
