journal of undergraduate research
vii
Now in its fifth year, the
Journal of Undergraduate Research
isa peer-reviewed scholarly publication that collects, reviews, anddistributes outstanding academic research and writing producedby undergraduates in the College of Arts and Letters.
e primary goal of the
Journal
is to provide an outlet beyond the classroom foroutstanding undergraduate work. We believe that the quality of re-search among Arts and Letters students is deserving of a wide audi-ence; consequentially, the
Journal
endeavors to reveal that work, andtherefore promote further achievement in undergraduate researchand writing.
e
Journal’s
twenty-two member editorial board, comprising adiverse array of students from the College, has reviewed seventy pa-pers from nearly every department in Arts and Letters.
e four thatare published here, and the three more that appear in the online edi-tion of the
Journal
, particularly highlight the original and outstand-ing research completed in the College. For the editors, the papersselected demonstrate the determined pursuit of knowledge that isat the core of a liberal arts education. It is our hope that the
Journal
readership has a similar response.
