Sustainable Design with Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2010

The course contains six lessons following the outline and learning objectives below. Course Introduction This project-based curriculum explores an information modeling approach to sustainable design that spans architecture and related engineering disciplines and addresses key topics of sustainability in the field of building construction. This curriculum is intended to be part of building information modeling (BIM) methodologies that support the development SD in construction. The use of this curriculum will prepare learners for the integrated practice of sustainable design and multi-disciplinary collaboration with Autodesk Ecotect Analysis.

Course Outline Lesson 1: Modeling and Sustainability

Overview Many different analysis tools are available to study and aid in sustainable design. The industry struggles with the unification of the data into a format that can be used by all parties. Because of the diverse nature of the analysis processes, this goal of a common format for all analysis tools will be difficult to attain. This section takes a look at a few of the formats available and shared by several Autodesk tools: gbXML DXF IFC Lesson Objective After completing this lesson, you will be able to: Describe the difference between an analytical space model and a geometric model. Import a gbXML file into Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2010 software. Import a DXF file into Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2010 software. Exercises The exercises in this lesson are: Exercise 1-1: Import a gbXML File into Ecotect Analysis Exercise 1-2: Import a DXF File into Ecotect Analysis

Lesson 2: Modeling the Sustainable Building Site

Overview In this lesson, you study the site macro issue of regional and local climate. Objectives After completing this lesson, you will be able to: Discover where to find weather files. Review the differences between various weather data sources. Load weather data into different analysis tools. Convert weather data exported from Autodesk Green Building Studio software to Autodesk Ecotect Analysis software. Exercises The exercises in this lesson are: Exercise 2-1: Add and Review Weather Files in Green Building Studio

Lesson
Exercise 2-2: Comparative Discovery Using Weather Files in Ecotect Analysis Exercise 2-3: Convert a Green Building Studio CSV File to an Ecotect Analysis WEA File

Lesson 3: Building Placement, Massing, and Layout for Sustainability

Overview This lesson demonstrates how to use some of the tools available for studying the impact of form and orientation on the energy use of a building. Additionally, it illustrates how to use the Right-To-Light tool found in Autodesk Ecotect Analysis software to establish encroachment planes to minimize impact on the adjacent development. Objectives Analyze the impacts of the massing and layout of a building on energy consumption. Analyze the impact of rotation of a building mass study on energy consumption. Identify the form constraints imposed by Right-To-Light issues with the adjacent development. Exercises The exercises in this lesson are: Exercise 3-1: Massing Impact on Energy Use Exercise 3-2: Impact of Rotation on Energy Consumption Exercise 3-3: Right-To-Light Massing Studies

Lesson 4: Modeling Human Comfort

Overview Once the massing is studied, understanding the needs of human comfort will help establish the parameters of the sustainable design. This lesson introduces the concepts and measures of human comfort. Once the basic factors are understood, designing for these factors will be addressed in the next lesson where you work with the building shell, analyzing specific features and their impact to human comfort. Objectives After Completing this lesson you will be able to: Discuss the key factors in determining human comfort Discuss the differences between Predictive Mean Vote and Percent Dissatisfaction Use the psychrometric tools Exercises Lesson The exercises in this lesson include: Exercise 4-1: Psychroometrics Exercise 4-2: Predictive Mean Vote and Percent Dissatisfaction

Lesson 5: Optimizing the Design of the Building Envelope for Sustainability

Overview In this lesson you will look at material qualities and their affect on daylighting in the building. Objectives After Completing this lesson you will be able to: Perform a daylight analysis in Ecotect Change materials assignments in Ecotect and Green Building Studio

Exercises The exercises in this lesson include: Exercise 5-1: Daylighting Exercise 5-2: Create a Glazing Material

Lesson

Lesson 6: Modeling the Design of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Systems for Sustainability
Overview In this lesson you will work through analyzing the Mechanical loads for a building using Autodesk Revit MEP 2010 Objectives After completing this lesson you will be able to: Add a Design Alternative with an alternate mechanical system to your Green Building Studio project. Review the monthly space loads on a building and review the source of energy gains or loss. Create a detailed Heating and Cooling Loads report for a building Exercises The exercises in this lesson include: Exercise 6-1: Whole Building Energy Analysis with Green Building Studio Exercise 6-2: Monthly Space Loads with Ecotect Analysis Exercise 6-3: Heating and Cooling Loads with Revit MEP
