Post-Game Quotes
PADRES MANAGER BUD BLACK: On Claytons early struggles: I thought his stuff was fine; he got some stuff up in the strike zone and the Mariners came out hacking. I think the stretch of hitters: the Seager walk, and then Moralesthat was a breaking ball over the plate, fly ball to right, just in the right spot; right-handed hitter hitting a ball in the right field cornerthats a tough one. And then not a good breaking ball to Morse. That put him right behind the 8-ball right away at 4-0. He settled in, got a lot of ground balls after that; we saw a lot of ground balls to Caby [SS Everth Cabrera], to Lexi [2B Alexi Amarista]. What we see is that type of pitcher: a grounder, that type of efficiency, the ball/strike ratio was great, I think right around 90 pitches, 60 strikes, right around there [actual: 89/60]. The Seager-Morales-Morse stretch really put us behind the 8-ball and then the way Aaron [Harang] was pitching, we werent going to get back in that game even though we hit some balls on the nose that could have swung the game a little bit early. We hit some balls right at people, had some good swings. After that, when they stretched the lead against Anthony [Bass], it was a tough one from there. What seemed to be working so well for Harang? Like I said earlier we hit some balls on the nose and their defenders were right there. From there it looks like he gained some confidence. It looks as though the fastball away was effective, he had a nice breaking ball at times, mixed in a couple changeups. Hes thrown strikes all year, it looks as though hes pounding the strike zone all year. Today when we squared the ball up they were there, and then from there he gained confidence. It looked as though the fastball was pretty good today for Aaron.
