King Leads Schauer for Democratic Nomination

38%-31% in Informed Ballot Question
EAST LANSING, Mich. Although former Congressman Mark Schauer is the only announced Democratic candidate for governor, a new Mitchell Poll of 361 likely Democratic voters in the August 2014 Primary Election shows that UAW president Bob King (38%) leads Schauer (31%) in a two-way race after voters hear a brief description of both candidates. Thirty one percent are undecided. When voters hear a brief description of 2010 Democratic Secretary of State candidate Jocelyn Benson as well as King and Schauer, King (34%) leads Schauer (27%) by 7% and he leads Benson (10%) by 24%. The automated survey (N=361) was conducted last night, May 28, 2013, and has a Margin of Error of + or 5.16% at the 95% level of confidence. I have been hearing from some union friends that UAW president Bob King is being urged to run by labor leaders. I wanted to see how he would do if he actually challenged Mark Schauer in the Democratic Primary. Although Schauer leads before information is provided about the two candidates, King goes ahead by 7% when a brief description is read about both of them. King has strong support from union members who make up more than half of the respondents , Steve Mitchell, chairman of Mitchell Research & Communications, Inc. said. Looking at some key crosstabs: King (44%) leads Schauer (31%) with union members but his lead is much narrower in non-union households where King leads 32%-31%. By gender, King (41%) leads Schauer (35%) with men and he leads with women 37%28%. By race, King 41%) leads Schauer (25%) with African-Americans and he leads with White voters 38%-31%. By area, King (45%) leads Schauer (24%) in the Detroit Metro Area while King (35%) and Schauer (35%) are tied outside of the Detroit Area.

Mark Schauer has higher name identification: Schauer has a favorable of 31% and an unfavorable of 7% while 23% are aware of the name but cannot say if their impression is favorable or unfavorable. Thirty-nine percent are not aware. King has a favorable of 13% and an unfavorable of 7% while 31% are aware of the name but cannot say if their impression is favorable or unfavorable. Forty-eight percent are not aware.

The candidates were described as follows: Mark Schauer is a former state legislator from Battle Creek. He served one term in Congress before being defeated for re-election. Schauer has been endorsed by a number of important Democrats. Bob King is the current president of the United Auto Workers. While working on the line or working for the UAW, he graduated from college and law school. He is one of the most respected labor leaders in America. He was a strong opponent of the Right-toWork law passed by Gov. Snyder and the Republicans. Jocelyn Benson is a law professor and was the Democratic candidate for Michigan Secretary of State, losing a narrow race in 2010.

This poll shows that if Bob King were to enter the race, he would be a strong candidate in the Democratic Primary. Now, we will have to see if he or anyone else joins the campaign against Mark Schauer, Mitchell concluded. -30-
