What is MDX?

Language for OLAP/multi-dimensional query, calculation, referencing. Defined in 1998. Operates on pre-defined cubes, dimensions/hierarchies, levels, measures, properties Vendor support:

The Product

Todays presentation includes a demo of Excel connecting to Oracle 11g OLAP Option via Simba Technologies MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP It allows Excel PivotTables to connect natively to Oracle 11gs OLAP Option. Excel sends MDX queries out via an interface called OLE DB for OLAP (ODBO). The product implements the ODBO interface to provide MDX service to Excel.

MDX Provider Pre-requisites

Windows XP SP2 or Vista SP1 Microsoft Excel 2007 (Excel 2003 and XP also work) Oracle 11g R1.0.7 (OLAP Option B patch optional) OLAP Option An Oracle OLAP cube TNS service name from a tnsnames.ora file User name and password for Oracle server

Install and Configuration

Install similar to an ODBC driver Only takes a few seconds Then create a MS-Office Data Source Name (DSN) pointing at an entry in your Oracle tnsnames.ora file In Excel 2007, then Data tab > Get External Data > From Other Sources to build an Office Data Connection (.odc) to your Oracle cube. Details in MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP User and Admin Guide.

There are three options for using MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP: Basic Option Uses your cube as is immediately Server-Side Formatting Option Augment your cube with metadata to enable server-side measure formatting Advanced Option Extend your cube with additional attributes to support MDX default member, all member, custom ordering, and child cardinality The latter two options require cube administrator tailoring
