Noble Quran!
Let us look at the following Noble Verses from the Noble Quran:
"And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the living creatures
that He has scattered through them: and He has power to gather them together when He
wills. (The Noble Quran, 42:29)"
This Noble Verse was forwarded to me by brother Frank (www.why-christians-convert-to-

islam.com), who have embraced Islam; may Allah Almighty always be pleased with him.
As we see, "through them" includes the living creatures in both the Universe (heavens) and

Also, "gather them together when He wills" seems to suggest that Allah Almighty would
allow communication, finding and meeting with those scattered creations in the Universe
(UFOs in other words) when "He wills".
Allah Almighty clearly talked about what we call today "space shuttles":
"O ye assembly of Jinns and men! If it be ye can pass beyond the zones of the heavens and
the earth, pass ye! not without authority shall ye be able to pass! (The Noble Quran,
55:33)"
When Allah Almighty revealed to Prophet the Noble Quran 1500 years ago, there were no
flying air planes or man-made objects invented. Yet Allah Almighty talked about humans
passing the zones of heavens by saying "If it be ye can pass....., pass ye! not without
authority" What is that authority? It is the Will of Allah Almighty of course, and the
physical "space shuttles".
"Say: None in the heavens or on earth, except God, knows what is hidden: nor can they
perceive when they shall be raised up (for Judgment). (The Noble Quran, 27:65)"
"Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must come to God) Most
Gracious as a servant. He does take an account of them (all), and hath numbered them (all)
exactly. And everyone of them will come to Him singly on the Day of Judgment. On those
who believe and work deeds of righteousness, will (God) Most Gracious bestow love. (The
Noble Quran, 19:93-96)"
Noble Verses 27:65 and 19:93-96 clearly suggest that there are beings existing in the
Universe in places other than earth.
"Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: 'I will create a vicegerent on Earth.' They said: 'Wilt
Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do
celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?' He said: 'I know what ye know not.'
(The Noble Quran, 2:30)"
When I read this Noble Verse the first time after I watched citing of UFOs on TV, I pondered
upon it for a while. If Adam peace be upon him was the very first human out of all Mankind
that GOD Almighty ever created, then what caused the Angels peace be upon them to be
concerned about Adam's creation and say "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make
mischief therein and shed blood?"??
How did they know that we humans were going to do mischief on Earth and shed blood??
Also, notice that Allah Almighty said that he was going to "create a vicegerent on Earth"
only! So, it could very well be that Adam peace be upon him was the first human being ever
existed on Earth, but not the first human being ever created.
"It is He Who hath created for you all things that are on Earth; Moreover His design
comprehended the heavens, for He gave order and perfection to the seven firmaments; and
of all things He hath perfect knowledge. (The Noble Quran, 2:29)"
"He Who created the seven heavens one above another: No want of proportion wilt thou
see in the Creation of (God) Most Gracious. So turn thy vision again: seest thou any flaw?
(The Noble Quran, 67:3)"
"God is He Who created seven Firmaments and of the Earth a similar number. Through
the midst of them (all) descends His Command: that ye may know that God has power over
all things, and that God comprehends, all things in (His) Knowledge. (The Noble Quran,
65:12)"
In the above Noble Verses we clearly see that Allah Almighty created seven Heavens or
Dimensions! If we are living in one of those Dimensions, and there are six other ones like
the one we are living in, then it is very highly possible that there are other planets that have
living humans in them as well.
Notice carefully that Allah Almighty said in Noble Verse 65:12 "God is He Who created
seven Firmaments and of the Earth a similar number...." This could possibly mean that there
are six other Earths beside ours.
It could also mean that the Earth is made of seven layers as was Geologically proven. Please

ALIENS IN THE QURAN

Introduction
On 7th August 1996,NASA (1) scientists made an announcement that made front page
headlines throughout the world.Within a Martian meteorite,they had found evidence of a
microscopic lifeform that may have existed on Mars more than three billion years ago. (2)
Although other studies were later published which challenged this conclusion, (3) numerous
recent discoveries,for example,the discovery by the Galileo spacecraft, (4) in February
1997,of a possible red-coloured sea under the ice crust of Jupiter's moon,Europa, (5) are
raising hopes that we may soon be able to get an answer to one of the oldest and most
interesting questions asked by humans-"Is anyone out there,or are we alone in the universe?"
However,it may be that none of us may live to see the day when scientists will give us a
definitive answer to this question.For Muslims,that should not be a problem.We already have
the answer.Although many Muslims are unaware of the fact,the Quran (6) explicitly mentions
the existence of extraterrestrial life.
The existence of creatures of a spiritual nature,such as angels,in the universe,is accepted as a

fact by all Muslims,as well as people of other religions, such as Christians.The point that
generates excitement among the public,and scientists is the question of whether material
lifeforms like ourselves,which can be found by science,do actually exist outside the earth. (7)
The objective of this article is to present evidence from the Quran for the existence in the
universe,of MATERIAL lifeforms ("Life as we know it").
"Dabbatun"
In Sura 42,Verse 29 (42:29) of the Quran,we are told, "Among His (God's) signs is the
creation of the heavens and the earth,and the living creatures that He has scattered through
them :and He has power to gather them together when He wills." (8) Before proceeding
further,a point or two must be noted.The word "sama",translated "heavens",is also the Arabic
for "sky".One may object that the verse refers to creatures in the sky (which would be
birds),not in the heavens.However,birds are mentioned seperately from creatures of the
heavens in 24:41, "Seest thou not that it is God Whose praise all beings in the heavens and on
earth do celebrate,and the birds (of the air) with wings outspread?..." (9) In a note to
42;29,Muhammad Asad states,"In the Quran,the expression "the heavens and earth"
invariably denotes the universe in its entireity." (10) The Quran mentions that inanimate
objects also worship God:"Do they not look at God's creation, (even) among (inanimate)
things- how their (very) shadows turn round,from right to left,prostrating themselves to
God..."(16:48). (11) Therefore,may not the creatures spoken of in 42:29 in the heavens,be
inanimate creatures of God.No.The next verse,16:49 goes, "And to God doth obeisance all
that is in the heavens and earth,whether moving (living) creatures or the angels...". (12) The
word translated "living creatures" here is the same as that in 42:29- "Dabbatun".Comments
Asad,"The word dabbah denotes any sentient,corporeal being capable of spontaneous
movement and is contrasted here with the non-corporeal,spiritual beings designated as
"angels" ". (13) In other words,42:29 is referring to precisely the type of lifeforms that
science is searching for,not some metaphysical entities.Yusuf Ali
says,"Dabbatun:beasts,living,crawling creatures of all kind." (14) This is the same word used
in 2:164,"...in the beasts of all kinds that He scatters through the earth...are signs for a people
that are wise," (15) and in 24:45,"And God has created every animal from water:of them are
some that creep on their bellies;some that walk on two legs;and some that walk on four. God
creates what he wills..." (16) Commenting on 42:29,Allama Shabbir Ahmad Usmani
says,"From the verse it appears that like on the earth,there are some kinds of animals- living
creatures- in the heavens also." (17) On the same verse,Yusuf Ali comments, "Life is not
confined to our one little Planet.It is a very old speculation to imagine some life like human
life on the planet Mars...it is reasonable to suppose that Life in some form or other is
scattered through some of the millions of heavenly bodies scattered through space." (18)
From such remarks,the reader will realize that Muslim scholars are well aware of the fact that
42:29 clearly mentions the existence of aliens.
Is there any alien intelligent life ?

Although the discovery of any form of life outside the earth would be dramatic,humankind is
especially interested in knowing whether there is any alien intelligent life in the
universe.NASA previously had a program on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence
(SETI).Although now scrapped due to budget cuts, private SETI organizations (19) have now
been made which continue the search.The Planetary Society, (20) a private organization,in
which the film director Steven Speilberg (21) is a member of the Board of Directors,has the
largest SETI program in the world.So far, no sign of alien intelligent life has turned up.Can
the Quran provide an answer?
Sura 27:65 commands,"Say:None in the heavens or on earth, except God,knows what is

hidden:nor can they perceive when they shall be raised up (for Judgement)." (22) This shows
that,like humans,there are other creatures in the universe that will also be raised from the
dead.We are told in 19:93-96,"Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must
come to (God) Most Gracious as a servant.He does take an account of them (all),and hath
numbered them (all) exactly.And everyone of them will come to Him singly on the Day of
Judgement.On those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, will (God) Most Gracious
bestow love." (23) From these verses we learn that there are alien lifeforms that,like us,will
also be judged according to the works that they do during their lives.Among them are the
believers.Therefore,naturally,there will also be those aliens who are unbelievers.The believers
will be rewarded.The lifeforms being descibed in the above verses can hardly be expected to
be microorganisms.The Quran is referring to creatures of a level of development that makes
them morally accountable beings.They must be organisms possessing qualities which we
would ascribe to intelligent lifeforms.
In Sura 72:14-15,jinn (a type of spiritual lifeform,which the Quran mention as living on the
earth) say,"Amongst us are some that submit their wills (to God),and some that swerve from
justice.Now those who submit their wills- they have sought out (the path) of right
conduct:But those who swerve- they are (but) fuel for Hell-fire." (24) The Quran mentions
that good jinn will be rewarded with Paradise.Summing up from all the above verses,it is
clear that Judgement Day is for creatures in the whole universe (Sura 39:68-"The Trumpet
will (just) be sounded when all that are in the heavens and on earth will swoon, except such
as it will please God (to exempt).Then will a second one be sounded,when,behold,they will
be standing and looking on!") (25) and like jinn,aliens will also be sharing Paradise and Hell
with humans.In fact,the Quran mentions that Paradise is of a size like that of our present
universe- 57:21,"Therefore (vie) with one another for the pardon of your Lord,and for a
Paradise as vast as heaven and earh, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His
apostles." (26) Therefore, it is not surprising that when we are sharing this universe with
aliens,we should share Paradise and Hell with them too.The Quran shows us,therefore,that
not only do aliens exist,but among them are also intelligent beings.
Where can aliens be found?

Knowing that aliens,including intelligent lifeforms exist elsewhere, our next question would
be,"Where do they live?"Scientists naturally expect them to live on planets.They look for
other planets around other stars- planets that have the right conditions to harbour life- in other
words,other earths.In October 1995,scientists announced the discovery of the first extrasolar
planet around the star 51 Pegasi. (27) Since then,there have been a string of discoveries of
other planets.At the time of writing of this article,fifteen planets have been claimed to have
been discovered. (28) Although some of these objects have been dismissed as brown dwarfs
(including the object around Pegasi 51) by some scientists, (29) at least some of the fifteen
objects are agreed upon as being planets.Scientists believe that on potential moons around
planets found to be orbiting two stars, the right conditions may exist for life to be present.

In Sura 65:12,we are informed,"God is He Who created seven heavens and of the earth a
similar number..." (31) This verse,although usually translated properly,is very commonly
misinterpreted by commentators.They give their interpretation that space is divided into
seven zones,and likewise,as Yusuf Ali puts it,"the crust of the earth is built up of geological
strata one above another". (32) This interpretation arises due to a misunderstanding of what a
"heaven" is as mentioned in the Quran.Before continuing further about the topic of aliens,it is
necessary to clear up this confusion.The answer can be deduced from verses in the Quran
itself and comparing them with our current scientific knowledge about the universe.
Sura 21:30 asks,"Do not the unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined
together (as one unit of creation),before we clove them asunder?..." (33) Sura 41:11-12 tell
us,"Then turned He to the heaven when it was smoke,and said unto it and unto the earth:come
both of you,willingly or loth...Then We ordained them seven heavens...and inspired in each
heaven its mandate;and We decked the lowest heaven with lamps..." (34) and Sura 71:15-
16,"See ye not how Allah hath created seven heavens in harmony,and hath made the moon a
light therin,and made the sun a lamp?" (35) Sura 51:47 informs us,"And it is We who have
built the universe with (Our creative) power;and,verily,it is We who are steadily expanding
it." (36) Asad,comments on the above verses as follows:about 21:30,"...the above
unmistakable reference to the unitary origin of the universe- metonymically described in the
Quran as "the heavens and the earth"- strikingly anticipates the view of almost all modern
astrophysicists that this universe has originated as one entity from one single
element,namely,hydrogen,which became subsequently consolidated through gravity and then
seperated into individual nebulae,galaxies,and solar systems,with individual parts
progressively breaking away to form new entities in the shape of stars,planets and the latter's
satellites"; (37) about 41:11,he explains the word "smoke" as,"a gas- evidently hydrogen
gas,which physicists regard as the primal element from which all material particles of the
universe have evolved and still evolve..." (38) and says about the verse,"explaining this
passage,Zamakhshari observes:"The meaning of God's command to the skies (heavens) and
the earth to "come"... is this:He willed their coming into being..."";for 41:12,he explains
"seven heavens" as,"a multiplicity of cosmic systems"; (39) about 51:47 he says,"the phrase
"inna la-musi'un" clearly foreshadows the modern notion of the "expanding universe"- that
is,the fact that the cosmos,though finite in extent,is continuously expanding in space." (40)
Finally,three more verses need to be referred to- 50:38,"And verily We created the heavens
and the earth and all that is between them...and naught of weariness touched us" (41)
,21:104,"The Day when We shall roll up the heavens as a recorder rolleth up a written
scroll.As We began the first creation,We shall repeat it.(It is a promise binding) upon
Us.Lo!We are to perform it" (42) ,and 14:48, "One day the Earth will be changed to a
different Earth,and so will be the heavens..." (43)
From the verses above,we learn this from the Quran:a heaven is a material entity which arose
from the same material as the earth originated from.Initially,there was one gaseous mass.A
cleavage process occured resulting in the making of the "seven heavens" and "all that lies
between them".The sun,moon and earth are constituants of a heaven.Therefore,a heaven must
be larger than a star (sun).When the end of the universe is at hand,the heavens,which till then
were in an expanding universe (51:47) will come together.Then,the way our present universe
came into being,in a similar manner,a new creation will come into being,containing other
heavens and another earth.Any astronomer reading these verses can tell you that there is only
one entity that fits the description of a heaven in the Quran- a "heaven" in the Quran must be
referring to a "galaxy".According to modern science,the universe arose from a singularity,at
the Big Bang,and has since,been expanding.From a primordial gas cloud arose hugh
fragments from which the galaxies and their clusters arose.Today,the galaxies are moving
apart from each other in space.They are seperated by intergalactic space in which may lurk
invisible dark matter,making upto 90% of the total mass of the universe.if there is sufficient
dark matter,at some time in the future,the universe will stop expanding and enter a
contraction phase in which the galaxies will finally come close together in a Big Crunch
marking an end to the present universe.The universe would have returned to a singularity
state similar to that from which the present universe arose.Then,once again,scientists
predict,a new universe may rebound from the singularity of the Big Crunch,as another Big
Bang gives rise to a universe with its own galaxies and planets etc.Verses in the Quran agree
amazingly with our current ideas about the universe!
The purpose of our lengthy divergence from the main topic of this article was to prove that
the "seven heavens" are not zones into which the universe is divided,but large astronomical
entities, the galaxies.Some people have interpretted a heaven as being a solar
system.However,while this view may seem appropriate for some verses,it does not tally with
all the verses.
The Quran mentions the creation of seven heavens.Asad explains that,"...as regards the
"seven heavens",it is to be borne in mind that in Arabic usage...the number "seven" is often
synonymous with "several"." (44) I have shown that the heavens are the galaxies and we can
see that millions of them exist.Even if we assume that the heaven are some other
astronomical objects that arose from the primary gas cloud,they definitely are not literally
seven in number,but in the millions.
The relevance of this to our discussion on aliens is that the Sura 65:12 tells us that,as God has
created "seven Heavens",He has created,"of the earth a similar number..." Therefore,as there
are millions of galaxies,God has also created millions of earths scattered throughout the
universe.Usmani comments on 65:12,"The earths as well,He created seven (Usmani thinks
literally seven.We know it actually means "many"),as given in the Tradition of Tirmizi etc.It
is possible they are not visible, it is possible they are visible,but people think them to be stars
or planets,as the scientists of today have predicted the possibility of life on Mars etc..." (45)
An important thing to point out in 65:12 is that God does not use the word "worlds",but
specifically,"earth".An 'earth' would be a planet that harbours life.Scientists also often speak
of looking for other earths.They mean not just any planet,but one sustaining or capable of
sustaining life.In his book,The Bible,The Quran and Science, Maurice Bucaille writes,"...it
comes as no small surprise to the reader of the Quran to find that earths such as our own may
be found in the Universe..." (46)
We have finally arrived at the Quran's answer as to where aliens can be found.They inhabit
the millions of earths that God has created among the millions of heavens (galaxies) in the
universe. The Quran therefore,gives us a magnificent view of the universe- a universe
teeming with life,a place that the late astronomer Carl Sagan described as a "cosmic
fugue,with themes and counter- points,dissonances and harmonies,a billion different voices
playing the life music." (47)
Will we ever discover aliens?
So far,we have learnt from the Quran that extraterrestrial life,inclucing intelligent life, exists
throughout countless earths in the universe.But this is not sufficient to satisfy our
curiosity.We want scientists to actually discover aliens.Only after we have found
incontrovertible scientific evidence that aliens exist,will our (unbelieving) hearts see that the
Quran was correct all along.We actually won't be satisfied till we meet an alien face to face.Is
there any chance that in the future we will actually discover,through science,the existence of
aliens and establish some kind of contact with them or even meet them?
To get some idea on this matter,we must return to Sura 42:29.We are told over there that the
scattering of living creatures in the heavens and the earth is a "sign".What is a sign?Sura
6:104 says,"Momentous signs have come to you from your Lord.He that sees them shall
himself have much to gain,but he who is blind to them shall lose much." (48) Sura
6:109,"They solemly swear by Allah that if a sign be given them they would believe in it."
(49) Sura 7:73,"A clear proof has come to you from your Lord.Here is Allah's she-camel:a
sign for you." (50) Clearly,a sign is something which we can see,or at least,experience with
our senses.Otherwise,it would not be a sign.Some signs are those that God showed to humans
in the past.Other signs remain for God to show us in the future-"Soon we will show them Our
Signs in the (furthest) regions,and in their own souls,until it becomes manifest to them that
this is the Truth" (41:53). (51) THERFORE,SURA 42:29 CONTAINS A PROPHESY THAT
A TIME WILL INDEED COME IN THE FUTURE WHEN HUMANS WILL DISCOVER
ALIENS.
In Sura 55:33-34,we are addressed,"O ye assembly of Jinn and men!If it be you can pass
beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth,pass ye!Not without authority will ye be able
to pass!Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?" (52) Why does God ask us to
go into space? There must be some purpose.Maybe it be for us to fulfil some grand destiny in
store for our species- maybe to become a galactic race,a respectable part of the galactic
community of civilizations.Maybe,it is our travels in space that may lead to our encounter
with aliens and fulfil the prophesy in 42:29.Only time will tell.In anticipation of the time
when we become space-travellers,we are told in Sura 29:22, "Neither on earth nor in heaven
shall you be beyond reach:nor have you any guardian or helper besides Allah." (53)
To reach other civilizations,we must be capable of feasible interstellar transport. Might we

one day be capable of undertaking such a voyage?Sura 16:8 says,"And (it is He Who creates)
horses and mules for you to ride...and He will yet create things of which (today) you have no
knowledge." (54) The latter part of this verse is often translated in the present tense but as
Asad points out,"The use in this context,of the aorist "yakhluqu" implies the future tense ("He
will create") ...Since this reference to God's continuing creation comes immediately after a
mention of primitive means of transport,it obviously relates to other- as yet unknown- things
of the same category:that is to say,to new means of transport which God unceasingly creates
through the instrumentality of the inventiveness with which He has endowed man's mind."
(55) Therefore,it is possible that we may one day make the spacecraft required for interstellar
travel.After all,God Himself has encouraged us to,"pass beyond the regions of the
heavens".Sura 42:29 ends with the statement that God has the power to gather the creatures
of the heavens and earth together if He wills.This also points to the possibility of our meeting
aliens in the future.However,this gathering may well refer to that which will occur on
Judgement Day as mentioned in Sura 19:93-96 (see above).
Man's position among creation

The most revolutionary discoveries in history have been those which altered the way humans
perceived themselves in the universe.We discovered that the earth was not at the centre of the
universe.We discovered that our Sun was a very ordinary star located in an insignificant part
of an ordinary galaxy,which was only one of millions of galaxies.These discoveries should
have humbled us.Yet,even today,many of us triumphantly proclaim ourselves as being the
most supreme creation of God.It is common to ascribe our cherished position among all
living things to our higher intellectual abilities.If we were to find out that there are other
intelligent beings in the universe,and that some may be intellectually more superior to
us,where would that leave us ?Would we finally be dethroned?
Sura 17:70 informs us,"Verily We have honoured the children of Adam...and preferred them
above many of those whom We created with a marked preferment." (56) Many translations
fail to mention the "marked preferment" in the verse,although the verse contains the Arabic
"tafzelan" which conveys this.Note that the verse mentions that there are other creatures
besides humans,who have also been given a position of distinction,and humans have been
preferred above many,not all,of these creatures.Usmani states in a comment on this
verse,"Under this verse a debate is opened:Who is superior- Man or Angel?But logically this
verse does not decide the issue." (57) Another scholar has written,"From this (verse) it is
evident that whatever superiority humans have got over other creatures is not whole.Allah's
creatures contain such creatures upon which humans have got no superiority."It must be
remembered here that while so far we have been discussing material alien lifeforms,the
debate of man's position in creation includes both material and spiritual creatures of
God.Some early authorities,such as Hasan,have not accepted the word "akser" mentioned in
17:70 as meaning "many".Hasan maintains that the word "akser",as used in 17:70, should be
understood as meaning "all",since the same word is used in 26:233 and 10:36,where it would
be inappropriate to take its meaning as "many" but rather as "all".With such a substitution in
verse 17:70,the meaning would be altered to mean that man is preferred by God over all
creatures.
The debate on man's status continues among scholars and also among the public.Let us make
an analogy to the debate of whether man is superior to woman.Suppose for a moment that we
hand the trophy to man and let him enjoy his "superior" position.On the Day of Judgement,it
will only be deeds that count and good women will go to Paradise and bad men will burn in
Hell.Who would have been more superior?As you can see,in the final analysis,any debate on
the status of a race,or species is useless.From earlier verses mentioned in this article,the
reader will remember that,according to the Quran, God will judge humans as well as aliens
on the basis of their deeds and reward them accordingly.Many humans will be sent to Hell for
their wrongdoings. At the same time there will be aliens who will be rewarded for their good
deeds.Who would be more superior- the unbelieving human or the faithful alien?The answer
is obvious.Therefore,what's the use of debating this point?Status of a creature is relative to its
moral conduct.Sura 95:4-5 states, "Surely We created man of the best stature,then We
reduced him to the lowest of the low." (58)
Islam and the geocentric universe

It is the fanciful idea of religion-bashers that the discovery of extraterrestrial life will
undermine any remaining credibility that religion may have.In the case of Islam,as one can
see from this discussion,that can hardly be the case.On the contrary,such a discovery would
verify the truth of the statements contained in the Quran relating to the subject of alien
life,and strengthen the position of Muslims.The vision of Islam is that of a truly universal
religion.It is far removed from the exclusiveness of Judaism ("We are the Chosen Ones for
God's message").It is a pity that the image of all religions has suffered a setback from the
great scandal of the Church- its treatment of Galileo,for (rightly) challenging their views of a
geocentric universe,in which Man was The Central Figure in God's Plan of Creation,living on
a planet around which all the rest of creation revolved.
The Quran gives us a picture of our place in the universe that is quite different.In Sura
40:57,God says, "Assuredly the creation of the heavens and the earth is a greater (matter)
than the creation of men:yet most men understand not." (59) Comments Yusuf Ali,"Man is
himself a tiny part of creation.Why should he be so ego-centric?" (60) No one race of humans
was chosen to be the exclusive custodians of the truth.Sura 16:36 tells us,"For We assuredly
sent amongst every People an apostle,(with the command),"Serve God,and eschew Evil":of
the people were some whom God guided,and others on whom Error became inevitably
(established).So travel through the earth,and see what was the end of those who denied (the
Truth)." (61) According to some Traditions of The Prophet (pbuh), 124,000 messengers have
been sent into the world by God,throughout the ages to people all over the world.No nation
was denied access to the Truth.Even on earth,guidance was provided not only to humans,but
also the Jinn who co-habit this planet with us- 6:130:"(Then He will say):"Jinn and men!Did
there not come to you apostles of your own who proclaimed to you my revelations and
warned you of this day?" (62) .God's bounty,according to Islam,is not confined to creatures of
the earth because He is,"...Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth,the Lord of the Worlds"
(45:36). (63) To the people were sent revealed Books also,the last of which is the
Quran.About the Quran itself,we are told in 43:4,"It is in the Mother Book with Us,sublime
and full of wisdom." (64) About other planets,S.Bashir-ud-din Mahmood has this to say,"On
the basis of the interpretation of verse 65:12 by Ibn-e-Abbas (May Allah be pleased with
him),we can say that inhabitants of these worlds must have their religion like ours and so the
Holy Books.They all come from the same "Supreme Source" of revelation from where the
Holy Quran originated for us on the Earth.It is evident from the verse of the Holy Quran"
(ie.43;4.All Books come from the "Mother Book with Us"). (65) The very first verse of the
Quran begins,"Praise be to Allah,Lord of the Worlds." (66)
Summing up,while the Quran does point out that man has a favoured position on earth,
(2:30-"Behold,thy Lord said to the angels:"I will create a vicegerent on earth.""; (67) 2:34-
"We said to the angels:"Bow down to Adam..."" (68) 95:4- We have indeed created man in
the best of moulds." (69) ) there are other creatures of God who have also been favoured in
the universe (17:70).Humans are just a small part of God's creation (40:57).When they act
wrongly,they are reduced to the lowest of the low (95:5).Salvation is not only for some race
of humans, but for all humans and creatures throughout the universe.There is a grand destiny
planned by God for all of them.All humans as well as aliens who follow the guidance that
God sent to their respective planets,will be rewarded (19:96)."...it is God Whose praise all
beings in the heavens and on earth do celebrate..."(24:41). (70) All will return to Him.How
far the picture of the universe that Islam paints is from that of a geocentric universe!
Conclusion - a "secret" waiting to be told If the Quran is so explicit

in stating the existence of living organisms in the universe (42:29),we would suppose that the
Muslim population would generally be aware of the fact that the Quran mentions
extraterrestrials.Unfortunately that is not the case.A significant proportion of Muslims have
no idea that this exciting piece of information is provided in their Holy Book.I have quoted a
number of scholars in this article,who have commented on the verses relating to
extraterrestrials.Among them are those such as Yusuf Ali and Muhammad Asad,whose works
are known to Muslims throughout the world.Allama Shabbir Ahmad Usmani was a prominent
figure in the Freedom Movement of Pakistan.All scholars quoted are from the mainstream of
Islam. So,at least,Muslim scholars are aware of the Quran mentioning aliens.Yet,there are
scholars also who have no idea about this subject.Surprisingly,even Maurice Bucaille,whose
brilliant book, The Bible,The Quran and Science is extensive in its coverage of scientific
topics in the Quran,completely overlooked the mention of aliens.
How aware were the early Muslims,about the existence of extraterrestrials,or verses in the
Quran on this topic?Bashir-ud-Din Mahmood writes,"The idea that there is life elsewhere in
the universe also,was derived from the Prophet of Allah (pbuh) when he told Muslims,"When
you sit down in the prayer for the Attahiyat and say: "Peace be upon us,and the righteous
servants of Allah" you actually send peace on all the righteous people living on the Earth and
in the heavens."This clearly implies that all type of people,good and bad live in the other
worlds as they live on our Earth." (71) He also writes,with reference to the Rasial Imam
Ghazali,"According to Imam Muhammad Ghazali (11th Century),people in some of these
planetary worlds have learnt to travel and communicate with each other." (72)
The case of Ibn-e-Abbas is interesting.He was one of the Companions of the Prophet
(pbuh).The Prophet (pbuh) had prayed to God specially to endow Ibn-e-Abbas(73) with
knowledge of the Quran,and he became one of the great scholars of the Quran.Maulana
Maududi writing in his Tafhim-ul-Quran,tells us that,"Ibn-e-Abbas (may Allah be pleased
with him)...believed with confidence that there are many more earth-like bodies in the
heavens. ...He not only thought that such earths are inhabited by intelligent beings but also
that their people are exactly like the inhabitants on the Earth.He even went so far as to say
that they may have a Prophet like Muhammad (pbuh),and had a Adam,like our Adam,a
Noah,like our Noah,an Ibrahim like our Ibrahim,and a Jesus like our Jesus (pbut)." (74) The
knowledge of the existence of aliens and that they are mentioned in the Quran, has been
present among Muslims from the earliest days of Islam!
There is something else that we know about Ibn-e-Abbas.He did not widely publicize his
views about aliens. Rather,he was quite secretive about this matter.The reason is that he was
afraid that his ideas would confuse people.In fact,he was afraid that people would be in
danger of becoming unbelievers by not accepting the truth of this matter,which the Quran
itself attested to.Perhaps it was such considerations that lead Muslim scholars of later times
not to touch on the topic of aliens much,and so today,also,so many Muslims remain unaware
about this matter.But times have changed.We've come a long way in our voyage of discovery
of the wonders that surround us.The recent discoveries of extrasolar planets,of ice on the
moon (75) ,of microbes deep beneath the earth's surface and around thermal vents in the
oceans (76) ,of water on the sun (77) and many other amazing findings are setting the stage
for a grand finale.The public is mentally prepared to hear soon about the discovery of life
outside the earth.
In recent times,Muslims have missed golden opportunities of propagating their religion to the
peoples of the world.For example,the Quran mentions the expansion of the universe.This
phenomenon was discovered by scientists only in 1929.If Muslims had let the world know
beforehand,that the Quran mentioned this fact, then upon its discovery,a big impact could
have been made on the non-Muslim world.We would have shown the world the power,the
miracle,of the Quran.Of course,even today,the miracle remains that the Quran mentions the
expansion of the universe,but non-Muslims tend to say,"Now you tell us,after science has
already discovered this!You must be construeing the meaning of Quranic verses to suit your
wishes."
Today,as we stand at the threshold of making the most revolutionary discovery in the history
of humankind,we Muslims should ask ourselves,"Hasn't the time finally come for the "secret"
that Ibn-e-Abbas held to be made known to the whole world?"Yes,the time is ripe.Let the
world know,before it discovers for itself,that 1400 years ago in the deserts of Arabia,a
prophet received revelations,mentioning the existence of extraterrestrial life through
countless heavenly bodies in the universe,and prophesying that one day, humans will indeed
discover aliens.
The Quran contains many amazing statements relating to science.There is no reason to

believe that it has finally yielded all of its scientific secrets and as we enter the next
century,we can be confidant that the Quran will continue to shed light on some of the most
enduring and intriguing scientific mysteries of our times.

RUSSIA: FLYING SAUCER JEOPARDIZES ARMY NEAR CHECHNYA
MAJACHKALÁ -- Last week we reported on a UFO over Russian troops near Daguestan, a
Republic bordering Chechnya on November 14, 2000. Apparently Russian aircraft were
launched to intercept a low flying UFO near the Caspian Sea. Muslim rebels are fighting
against Russian forces north of the Caucasus for over a year and a half. The UFO caused the
Russian to sound battle stations. Some garrisons noted the object was flying at low altitude of
only a 100 meters and had three fluorescent lights above with two meter spaces between
them. The Muslim rebels hailed the UFO phenomenon as a sign from Allah. Muslim leaders
in Dagestan claimed "the strange phenomenon was a portent which bore a message from
Allah himself. An Islamic spiritual leader stated that, "Without any doubt it was 'a JINN, an
angel or another heavenly being, since Allah's Garden of Bliss is filled with these.'"
Editors Note: Powerful Islamic forces are rising in the Middle East using UFOs as an
influential motivating factors. Islamic forces are fighting in Israel, Iraq, and Russia. To help
you understand the significance of these sightings, I have included the following data about
JINN'S (popular genie) and UFOs.
THE TRUE NATURE OF THE "UFO ENTITIES"
(See also above-Ed) Gordon Creighton of Flying Saucer Review writes: One of the more
curious features of the followers of the various religions is that, being so dogmatically certain
that in their own particular little faith they already possess the whole truth about all things in
Heaven and Earth, it almost never occurs to any of them to look elsewhere and find out what
the followers of other religions may know or may have discovered. This is certainly a pity, for
study of all the great world religions -- and notably Islam one of the world's great religions --
yields valuable clues as to the true nature of the "UFO Phenomenon" Islam knows, in fact, of
the existence of three entirely separate and distinct species of intelligent beings in the
Universe, and indeed can furnish surprisingly precise details regarding their natures and
roles and activities. Angels, Men, and JINN'S.
The first category is that of the Angels or Messengers. The second are Men, with planetary
physical bodies assembled from the mineral and chemical elements of our Periodic Table.
The third category, is the category of those beings created before man was who are referred
to collectively in Arabic as Al-Jinn that means. "to hide or to conceal" indeed a very fitting
derivation for the name of these creatures. Whereas the bodies of Angels are of light, the
bodies of Al-Jinn consist of "essential fire," or "essential flame," or "smokeless fire," or
"smokeless flame." It is specifically stated in the Qur'an (Surah XV, 26 and 27) that they
were created before mankind and some scholars speculate these might be the "Pre-Adamic
men" whose existence is hinted at here and there in the "Holy Bible." Western occultists
have tried to describe them as ether, or as etheric or astral planes. I have also seen it
suggested that some sort of plasma is indicated.) The Source of the Jinn's is not very distant
from us, yet at the same time somehow very far from us. In other words, on some other
dimension, or in some other Space/Time framework, "right here", some other Universe that
is here, behind Alice's mirror: "a mirror-universe on the other side of the Space-time
Continuum" as it has been neatly put by some investigators.
Although, the Qur'an (Koran) is not clear on this, it looks as though some of the Jinn's could
be fully physical and what we call extraterrestrials, while other species of them are of an
altogether and finer sort of matter, corresponding to what various UFO investigators have
tried to indicate by such terms as "ultraterrestrial" or "metaterrestrial." In thinking about these
ideas, we might bear in mind the theory of the Russian philosopher P. D. Ouspensky
regarding the possible existence of other, more subtle, levels of matter on which the
elements of the Periodic Table of our own chemical world are repeated -- and, if I understand
him aright, repeated more than once, on more than one level. The early writings of Dr.
Meade Layne in the USA about the "Dense Etheric World" from which he maintained that the
UFO entities and their craft originated should also be borne in mind. (His book The Coming
of the Guardians, was published in 1958, and may prove to have been very important.)
Certain of the benevolent Jinn's may well be our "Guardians."
That there is some close affinity, or some link of destiny between Jinn's and Mankind seems
certain, for although the vast majority of the Jinn's are devils, shaytans, nevertheless we are
assured in the Qur'an that some among their many species are "goodies" and are capable of
salvation. For it is specifically stated that Muhammad was sent as a Messenger to both
Mankind and the Jinn's, so that, in the Final Days, some of the Jinn's will enter into Paradise,
while the rest of them will be cast down into Hell. Their revelation to IBLIS, the Top Devil (=
"SATAN") is in general somewhat obscure. In the Qur'an Iblis is certainly described as a
Jinn, but elsewhere in the Qur'an he is also described as an Angel. (Surely the explanation is
that Iblis is that same high being, originally of Angelic status, who rebelled against God and
is named in the Christian texts as "Lucifer") Had we the space, much more might be said
about the Jinn's and their doings, but only a brief account of their main characteristics can
here be given. Their principal features, as listed below, are as I have gathered them from all
the Muslim written and traditional sources that I have been able to consult over the past 15
years. The reader can see for himself the parallels with the reported features of UFO entities
and can draw his own conclusions.
The Chief Characteristics of the Jinn's are:

1. In the normal state they are not visible to ordinary human sight.
2. They are, however, capable of materializing and appearing in the physical world. And they
can alternately make themselves visible or invisible at will.
3. They can change shape, and appear in any sort of guise, large or small.
4. They are able also to appear in the guise of animals.
5. They are inveterate liars and deceivers, and delight in bamboozling and misleading
mankind with all manner of nonsense. (See the average Spiritualist séance for examples of
their activities, and also the usual "communications" from UFO entities in close-encounter
cases.)
6. They are addicted to the abduction or kidnapping of humans. (The Scotsman Robert Kirk,
who wrote "The Secret Commonwealth" in 1691, evidently "knew more than was good for
his health," and was killed by them.)
7. They delight in tempting humans into sexual intercourse and liaisons with them, and
Arabic literature abounds with accounts of this kind of contact by mankind with both the
"goodies" and the "baddies" among the Jinn's. There are also even a considerable number
of accounts of encounters between the "goodies" and famous Muslim saints.
In official Islam - and this cannot be overemphasized -- the existence of the Jinn's has
always been completely accepted, even legally, and even to this day, in Islamic
jurisprudence. The full consequences implied by their existence were worked out long ago.
Their legal status, in all respects, was discussed and fixed, and the possible relations
between them and mankind -- especially in relation to questions of marriage and property! --
were seriously examined by jurists, as the greatest and most authoritative Western source,
the Encyclopedia of Islam, confirms. Stories of sexual commerce between Jinn's and
mankind have been of perennial interest to Arab readers, and it is important at this point to
mention that in Chinese literature there is also a considerable tradition of this sort which
awaits examination by Ufologists. The great Arabic literary catalogue known as the Fihrist,
compiled in the year 373 of the Muslim Calendar ( = A.D. 995) by Muhammad bin Ishaq bin
Abi Ya'qub al-Nadim al-Warraq al-Baghdadi, lists no less than sixteen works dealing with this
theme. (Compare also the European occultists' records of sexual contact between men and
female Sylphs, as well as the copious medieval Christian records relating to Incubi and

Extra-terrestrial life or life on other planets has been a subject of interest for quite some time not only
for the writers of science fiction but also for scientists exploring the remote parts of our planetary
system. H.G. Wells wrote a novel, The War of the World, in 1898A.D about the intelligent beings like

In 20th century science and technology made great strides. Many space missions have been sent to
explore the existence of living organisms on other planets & theirs moons. In the eighties of the
previous century a great project named as Meta was started. In the simplest term Meta is a huge
telescope of 98feet diameter which enabled man to explore remote parts of the universe. The
electronic devices fitted with this telescope can process and record 10 lack radio frequencies at a
time. (2)
The space scientists believe that if some intelligent beings dwell any-where in the universe would
send some radio signal to the inhabitants of the earth and it is important to catch that signal and find
the location where-from that signal is being transmitted. In America the SETI Institute has begun to
draft reply messages of the sort that might some day be sent to intelligent beings around other stars.
The institute is using the language of math: and science to compose interstellar messages that
describe altruism as it is being encountered on Earth by us. (3)
Mars has long been thought favourable for the existence of biological life. The reasons for this are:
Mars has the same rotation period as that of the earth, has the same atmosphere and perhaps has
substantial water at least in polar caps. It is also known to have Nitrogen, Carbon dioxide and other
gases. Mars does not have extremes of temperatures. Because of these reasons, planetary
explorations by spacecrafts were strongly supported by both the U.S and Russian governments.
Several spacecrafts have been orbited and landed on Mars. The first spacecrafts to study Martian soil
in detail were Viking Landers in 1976. They carried special instruments meant to detect traces of life.
However, final results of these studies were negative and no substantial traces of life were found.
Recently, meteorite ALH84001 found in Antarctic and is known to be from mars - - -because of
composition of its gases - - - has created a lot of excitement in researchers busy in the study of
extraterrestrial life. They suspected remnants of microscopic life embedded in this meteorite. Mars is
still a favorite candidate for life, therefore, many more missions are planned; but life on mars is bound
to be microbial and could be very different from that on the earth.
Currently, Jupiter’s moons, Europa and Ganymede are the best candidates considered on the basis of
spacecrafts explorations. Europa is suspected to have vast amount of liquid water ocean beneath its
thin icy crust. The question of debate is how far the ocean lies below the icy surface. If it is too far
even the most tenacious ocean life could be cut off from its energy source—the sun. Ganymede is
also suspected to have similar atmosphere. Future spacecrafts will be directed at these moons and
few other satellites.Saturn’s satellite Titan is known to have an extensive atmosphere of methane and
ammonia. The Cassini spacecraft is expected to reach Saturn and its moons in July, 2004 and will
drop a probe to explore titan and look for signs of life. Venus is a twin of the earth but much closer to
the sun. It has a dense atmosphere and looks to have undergone a runaway greenhouse effect with
surface temperature into several hundred degrees. Therefore, possibility of life is eliminated. (4)
Here we want to add the opinion of biologists about the nature of extraterrestrial life. Neil A Campbell,
Lawrence G Mitchell and Jane B Reece write in Biology—concepts and connections:
“Although it is almost certain that earth is the only life bearing planet in our solar system, it is
conceivable that conditions on planets elsewhere have resulted in the evolution of life… Organisms
on other planets might be very different from the ones we know…The molecular basis of heredity on
another planet might not DNA; the biological molecules there might even be based on an element
other than carbon.” (5)
John Baross, a biologist at the University of Washington and co-chairman of the Committee on the
Origin and Evolution of Life at the National Academy of Sciences, the America’s premier scientific
organization said:
"We are looking for organic life that might be different from Earth life," ( 6 )
David Deamer, a biochemist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, said:

There is "a 50-50 chance" extraterrestrial life would have a different chemistry from life on Earth. The
genetic code of every earthly creature, from bacteria to whales, is written in an alphabet of four letters:
A, C, G and T. Each stands for a chemical compound known as a base. "Weird life," however, might
have different or additional bases and hence be written in a different alphabet, say B, C, G and H. In
addition, all proteins and the building blocks of terrestrial life 8B are assembled from a set of 20
chemical compounds known as amino acids. But researchers have created deviant proteins using
more than 20 amino acids. (7)
Leslie Mullen in his article, Living in the Dark, appeared on the website of NASA has given interesting
findings of the research conducted about the unusual community of methanogenic organisms by the
research team of the University of Massachusetts and U.S. Geological Survey. He writes:
Now, scientists have discovered an ecosystem where sunlight or organic molecules are not needed
for energy. Deep underneath the Beaverhead Mountains in Idaho, one-celled bacteria and archaea
live in the 58.5-degree C (137 F) waters of the Lidy Hot Spring. The microbes living in these waters
are completely cut off from organic carbon and sunlight. Instead, the microbes exist by combining
hydrogen and carbon dioxide gasses dissolved in water. This chemical reaction produces methane
and generates the energy needed to sustain life. (8)
A member of the afore-said team, Lovley said:

The microbial community we found in Idaho is unlike any previously described on Earth. This study
demonstrates, for the first time, that certain microorganisms can thrive in the absence of sunlight by
using hydrogen gas released from deep in the Earth's surface as their energy source... Scientists
have searched for at least a decade for a community of microorganisms that could survive on
hydrogen rather than sunlight or organics. Such a community could teach us about potential life on
Mars or on Jupiter’s moon Europa. Life could exist in pockets of underground water on Mars, or in an
ocean under the frozen crust of Europa. Since this life would exist below the surface, it wouldn’t
receive any sunlight and therefore would need an alternative means of fuel. This is as close as we
have come to finding life on Earth under geological conditions most like those expected below the
surface of Mars. The microbial community found at the Idaho site is remarkably similar to what
geochemists have postulated might be found below the surface of Mars, based on what they know of
Martian sub-surface chemistry. (9)
Some of the findings of the research conducted by Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence
are given in an article written by Steven M. Greer on the website www.cseti.org
These findings are very astonishing and interesting. Steven M. Greer writes:
Some UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft (ETS) which are piloted by extraterrestrial biological
entities (EBEs) who originate on another planet, and most likely another star system. More than one
extraterrestrial civilization is represented in the current activities involving Earth. These extraterrestrial
civilizations are working in concert and not competitively, although there is some specialization in
function and activities for the various groups. This indicates that there exists either an emerging or
well established organization for these groups. These beings have bases within this solar system and
may maintain temporary bases on Earth, particularly under water. While various reports and
speculations exist, we cannot at this time definitely state which planets or star systems are the home
systems for these beings.
Sudden and fully open contact with human civilization has been avoided because of a number of
interrelated factors, including:
a.The need to avoid an untimely disruption of earth civilization including military, political,
geopolitical, cultural, economic, technological and religious upheaval.
b.Risks to their own civilization and 'people', as well as overall mission, given human xenophobia
and tendencies towards violent armed reactions.
c.Up to this time, such massive and open contact has not been necessary, and has not been
consonant with their overall long-term mission and purpose.
These beings and their craft belong to the same Reality as humans; however their advancement in
the realms of physical science and the science of consciousness has given them competence in a
broader aspect of the Full Spectrum of Reality than is usually experienced by humans.
Some if not all EBEs have advanced mental capabilities which include telepathy, precognition, remote
viewing and others, indicating that they have developed the 'science of consciousness' to a degree
which parallels or surpasses their advanced physical technologies. Humans also possess these
capabilities, but these remain largely undeveloped by most humans. EBEs are more developed or
advanced than humans in a number of respects, but are not superior to humans as beings. (10)
We now turn to the second part of our discussion, i.e., religious sources of knowledge. First we turn to
the Holy Quran in which some verses are very clear on the subject under discussion. In Sûrah 42
verse 29 Allah Almighty says:
Among His signs, is the creation of heavens and earth
And living creatures
He has dispersed therein,
And He is able to gather them together
When He wills.
The commentators of the Holy Quran both in antiquity & in the modern times, while commenting on
the above verse, have indicated towards the existence of intelligent beings like humans in heavens.
Hazrat Ibn-i-Abbas, a disciple and companion of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), was reluctant
to explain this verse for common people.
When someone asked him to explain this verse he said if he explained that verse he would not
believe in it. However, his explanation of the verse has been narrated through different sources in the
following words:
‘Every earth has a prophet like Muhammad, Adam like our Adam, a Noah like our Noah, and Abraham
like our Abraham, and Jesus like our Jesus (peace be upon them)’. (11)
The author of the commentary KHAZIN (VOL: 6, p.104) says:

”It is possible that different creatures created by Allah in the heavens might be moving about like
human beings.” (12)
According to commentary SADI-ALAL-JALALAIN there is nothing to stop from adopting the literal
interpretation of the above verse, i.e., Allah has created living beings in the heavens which move
about in the heavens as humans do on the earth (vol:4, p:34). (13)
The commentator of RUH ALMAHANI commented on the verse thus:

The authentic traditions of the prophet prove the existence of living creatures in the heavens…also it
is not far fetched to believe that there exist living creatures and beasts in the heavens which have
such shapes and conditions which are not in our knowledge(page:526). (14)
Maulana Maududi comments on the verse in the following words:

It is a clear indication that life not only exists on the earth but also on other planets. (15)
Bashiruddin Mehmood, a Pakistani scientist, explains the above verse thus:

It is obvious from the verse that living creatures, as on earth, must be widely scattered among the
heavenly worlds also. It also means that cosmos has innumerous living worlds with all types of
animals beasts and human beings dispersed therein. (16)
Another verse of the Holy Quran which refers to the existence of life supporting heavenly bodies is
verse 15 of SURA 65.The verse is:
Allah it is, who has created seven heavens,

And of the earth like thereof----
The commandment comes down
Among them gradually,
So that you may know that
Allah is able to do all things,
He surrounds all things in knowledge (65:15)
Maulana Maududi interprets the above verse in the following words: WAMINALARDH MISLUHUN (i.e.
AND OF THE EARTH LIKE THEREOF) means that as this earth is the abode of living creatures there
do exist other earths like bodies which are the abode of living beings. Hazrat Ibn-i-Abbas among old
commentators of Holy Quran is the only one who stated this fact in that era when no one was ready to
accept the fact that there could be any other abode than the earth where intelligent beings do exist.

The interpretation of the verse as given by Bashiruddin Mehmood is:

In the verse the statement COMMANDMENT COMES DOWN AMONG THEM GRADUALLY is also of
great significance; this means that development of each one of these earth systems is a slow
evolutionary process. Turbulence is basically a feature of the hot and active systems such as nebulae
etc. But once a heavenly body is destined to become a life supporting place, the process of change is
slowed down there. An example of this slow change is our own earth. According to the current
scientific thought, it is about 4 to 5 billion years old and has evolved to its present state. First signs of
life appeared on it after several billion years of its existence. Even after that it took hundred of millions
of years to have mature life on it…. The concept that other earths are like our earth, implies that their
development in space may be guided by the same set of rules, and life pattern in them should be
exactly ours. This must be so because, God Who is the Maker of scientific laws is the same
everywhere. (18)
According to the Holy Quran jinns were created from the fire. The Holy Quran says:
And the jinn race, We had before (the creation of man) from the fire of scorching wind (15:26).
And:
And He created jinn from fire free of smoke (55:15)
Before the advent of man the earth was the abode of jinns. We know that the earth took a lot of time
to become habitable for man. Before man Allah almighty created such intelligent beings on the earth
which can reside in a hot environment. Therefore, jinns matter of creation was fire suited to the
conditions of the then earth. Allama Shahabuddin Nadvi, an authority on Science & Islam, explains the
above mentioned verses thus:
It is possible that in the creation of jinns there might be an excess of combustible element or elements
like Hydrogen, Carbon, Phosphorus, Sulphur, etc. (19)
The above discussion leads us to the conclusion that the intelligent beings dwelling elsewhere in the
universe could be created of elements different from the human beings which suit their environment.
Both Science and Islamic sources of knowledge hint to the existence of extraterrestrial biological
entities.

The Jinn from a Scientific(?) Viewpoint

This article came about as a result of a discussion concerning the nature of the JINN, and
their apparent activity in the UFO and psychic fields.
The assumption that underlines the following viewpoint is that the Jinns are beings which
dwell on a parallel level to man, but due to their existing at a different vibratory rate, they
are not normally visible to us or detectable by us.
In spite of this invisibility, when UFO events or psychic events occur, there are often changes
in an energy that we can measure - and this is the electro-magnetic spectrum.
This article, then, is an attempt to bring together (1): observed effects associated with UFOs
and with psychic events; (2) traditional "occult" wisdom; and (3) contemporary scientific
knowledge.
Our starting point is with the traditions of Islam, and, in particular, the Qur'an, which contains
some quantity of information of a metaphysical nature, a proportion of which deals with the
Jinn. This material is summarized in Gordon Creighton's article, "A Brief Account of the True
Nature of the UFO Entities", published originally in FSR 29/1 (October 1983) and reprinted
in FSR 33/3 (September 1988).
The Jinn and the Infra-red
In that article, the Jinn are described as having "bodies of essential flame",1 or "smokeless
flame",2 or "smokeless fire".
In the same article by the Editor, ANGELS are described ( according to the Qur'an) as having
bodies of light.3 Since they are generally invisible to us, and also for reasons which I will put
forward later, I would suggest that the Angels' bodies are of an invisible energy from the
opposite end of the spectrum, i.e. - the ultra-violet.
Before I get too involved with technical discussions, I would just like to point out that there is
another well known Islamic book that also deals extensively with our unseen neighbours. In
fact one might call it a manual of mankind's interaction with the Jinn! And this is "THE ONE
THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS",4 or "ARABIAN NIGHTS".
Why did UFOs Appear En Masse in 1947?
One of the questions that often crop up in the UFO field is: "Why did UFOs start to appear in
great numbers, around and after 1947?"
Although plenty of UFOs were undoubtedly seen long before the year 1947, it does seem that
something may have provoked their increased activity, and increased appearances, at that
time.
Well now - an interesting answer to our question has been provided by the New Zealander
Trevor James Constable in his second book, "The Cosmic Pulse of Life", in which he states
that UFOs began to appear in numbers around the time when man started to use Radar. Or -
to put it another way - the UFOs began to appear around the time when man started to fill
the Earth's atmosphere with microwave radiation.5
Since the use of Radar became commonplace throughout the world shortly after World War
II, the dates certainly coincide, and, if we look at the nature of Radar - bearing in mind that
the Jinn may possess bodies of infra-red - then we can certainly see a good reason for their
becoming concerned!
Microwave radiation is just below infra-red in the electro-magnetic spectrum (i.e. - just
above Radio waves) - therefore our projection of microwaves into the Earth's atmosphere
may well disrupt, or disturb, the bodies of the Jinn and the medium in which they live and
dwell.
How the Jinn Materialize
In the Islamic texts it is stated that the Jinn are able to materialize or disappear at will. This
would imply one of three things:- (!) They have control over the matter that we consider to be
"everyday reality"; (2) They have control over certain aspects of our own psyche, and can
create in us the subjective experience of matter; (3) They can create illusions of an external
and very realistic nature in the same way that we create holograms. It is possible that this last
suggestion includes the first.
The reason for this is as follows:-
A Blueprint for all Matter?
Various researchers on the cutting edge of nuclear physics (i.e. Paul Davies) and also in the
border-line medical field (i.e. Harry Oldfield)6 have speculated that there exists a kind of
blueprint for physical beings and physical materials - this may be an electro-magnetic lattice
or hologram which tells each atom r molecule what to do and where to go.
The reason for this kind of speculation is that our present knowledge of natural control
systems is unable to explain the degree of specialization that many atoms/molecules/cells
exhibit.
The Mysterious "Crashed Discs"
Suppose, then, that the Jinn were able to construct and to destroy electronic blueprints, and
suppose, further, that, once set up, a blueprint will attract to it, from our environment, the
necessary minerals, gases, etc., in order to make up the corresponding physical form. When
the blueprint is removed or destroyed, the physical form will disintegrate or "return to dust".
This may provide an explanation for the physical reality of the crashed discs, whilst still
allowing that they are actually of etheric origin.
Jinn may function on Two Levels?

In ascribing intelligent behaviour to the Jinn, it must be accepted that they have at least two
levels of functioning - i.e. (1) the body of electromagnetic energy, and (2) a psyche of some
finer energy. This might be called "etheric", or possibly "astral", in the Western Occult
Tradition.) The reason why I am unsure about this terminology is that it may well be the case
that the term "etheric", as used, is a traditional, empirical description of the electromagnetic
environment which surrounds us. Therefore the psychology of the Jinn would have to be on
what we call the "Astral Level".
Here I think it necessary to clear up a misunderstanding which often occurs with regard to the
term "Ether" or "Etheric".
The Etheric Level
In the Western Occult Tradition, the "Etheric" is described as the innermost of a series of
"bands" around the Earth, penetrating deep into the Planet, and reaching to a certain height in
the Atmosphere. Higher above that in the Atmosphere is the "Astral";7above that is the
"Mental"8 - and so on, depending on which terminology you prefer to use.
At some point one of the unseen levels must be so expansive that it is - in fact -
interplanetary. (This would perhaps be the "Spiritual" or "Casual" Level.)
Another use of the word "Ether", which conflicts with the occult method of usage, is to
employ it in order to describe the interplanetary medium.9 This application of it was used, up
until the late 19th century, by astronomers and philosophers, but, as I have explained above,
the "interplanetary medium" would in occult terminology probably be called the "Casual" or
"Spiritual" Level.
Trevor Constable's "They Live in the Sky"
Therefore problems can occur, as, for example, in Trevor J. Constable's10 first book, "They
Live in the Sky",11 where the (apparently beneficent) contacting entities describe themselves
as being "from the interplanetary Etheric". Later in the same book, they are responsible for
protecting Mr Constable from attack by a lower order of unseen entities which I would call
"Etheric", using the occult terminology to refer to the unseen "band" closest to the Earth.
Be it noted, therefore, that any reference in the present article holds to the usage of the term
as employed in the Western Occult Tradition.
Having thus set out the basis of this idea concerning the nature of the Jinn, I would now like
to bring in some corroborating examples from the field of Psychical Research.
Changes of Temperature and Psychic Phenomena
In the typical "Ghost experience", a change in temperature is often felt around, or preceding,
the appearance of the apparition.
Since, to my knowledge, our experience of heat is directly related to the amount of Infra-red
present, then if an apparition were created by concentrating or converting localised electro-
magnetic energy, one would expect there to be a drop in Infra-red (and probably other
frequencies) around the phantom, - hence a drop in temperature?
Matthew Manning
Matthew Manning12 the British psychic, describes in his book "The Link"13 how, when he was
sleeping in his boarding school dormitory, "poltergeist" activities would occur. On one such
occasion a large red circle appeared on the wall, and it became very hot. This - it turned out -
was a way of attracting his attention, used by the earth-bound spirit of a girl who had died
some fifty years before in tragic circumstances.
The obvious inference is that the red circle that became hot (so hot in fact, that the people
were afraid of a fire starting) was a concentration of Infra-red.
"Psychic Photographs"
There have been in the past many psychic and paranormal photographs. Many admittedly
were probably fakes. However, a proportion remain which have been authenticated. In his
book "Beyond the Spectrum",14 Cyril Permutt surveys many of these photos and he describes
the techniques required for securing paranormal psychic photography of this kind. He found
that the best results could be secured with Infra-red, and this again would seem to bear out a
theory which I will put forward in the following paragraphs.
The Earth's atmosphere
Pursuing the idea of there being various different Planes in the unseen world, which surround
the Earth, and pursuing also the thought that they might be connected with electromagnetic
energy., I began an investigation of the Earth's Atmosphere and it's practical structure.
Putting it in a simplified form, it seems that High Energy Radiation (Cosmic Rays, etc.), from
the Sun, penetrate right through the Earth's atmosphere and are absorbed by the Earth, to be
re-emitted as Infra-red, Radiation, producing most of the warmth that we experience. The
Infra-red is kept in the lower part of the Atmosphere by clouds and by the Ionosphere (Ozone
Layer) from which it is reflected.
"Infra-red" denizens could dwell inside Earth!
Lower-frequency Infra-red penetrates deep into the Earth. Consequently, if a being had a
body of low-frequency Infra-red, it could live deep down inside the Earth, interpenetrating
what we consider to be solid materiality.
The Ionosphere has - as is presently well publicised - another function: this is the reflection of
Ultra-Violet coming from the Sun and hence reducing the amount of it that reaches us.
Therefore it can be said that above the Ozone Layer there is a comparatively high level of
Ultra-Violet and a low level of Infra-red, whilst below the Ozone Layer there is a much
higher amount of Infra-red, but comparatively little Ultra-Violet.
The Angels dwell in Ultra-Violet
If we take the Islamic description of ANGELS15 as having bodies of Light, and if we ascribe
this to the lighter or finer end of the spectrum (i.e. the Ultra-Violet), then we have an
explanation for the age-old tradition that Angels live "in the clouds", i.e., above the Ozone
Layer, where Ultra-Violet prevails.
Lower-level creature inhabit Infra-red
This is why, I suspect, Cyril Permutt, author of "Beyond the Spectrum", had greater success
with his Infra-red photography, since we humans dwell in the Etheric, where Infra-red
predominates. It must be comparatively rarely that the "FORCES OF LIGHT" come down
and help us on our way. Conversely, of course, most "ghost experiences" occur in darkness or
in dark places, from where the "Forces of Light" (Ultra-Violet) have receded.
From the "occult" point of view, as given in the Western as well as the Eastern Traditions, it
may very well be that the upper limit of the so-called "Etheric Plane" is the Ozone Layer
(Ionosphere), and that above and beyond this lies the "Astral".
The tradition that unseen beings originate from different areas within the Etheric (i.e. Dense
Etheric) may be explained by variations in frequency of Infra-red: i.e. Dense Etheric around
1012 Hz., and Finer Etheric nearer 1014 Hz., which would seem to imply that there should be a
corresponding frequency gradient through the lower part of the Atmosphere, the frequency
rising with the height above the Earth's surface. (Whether this is a fact or not remains to be
seen.)
At this point I would like to make it clear that, whilst it is possible that electro-magnetic
energy is the medium of the Etheric, it is equally possible that electromagnetism interacts
with a finer energy which is the true Etheric medium, but that it interacts in such a way as to
be like a stain or indicator, showing the form of the unseen Etheric/Psychic energy.
Baron von Reichenbach
The German scientist Baron von Reichenbach16 wrote, in the last century, about what he
called "the Odic Force", visible to sensitives, and emanating from each end of a natural
crystal, one end being OD POSITIVE (red and warm), and the other end producing OD
NEGATIVE (light blue and cool). Could these be the Infra-red and Ultra-Violet respectively?
Trevor J. Constable17 suggests that if one looks through a red filter at ordinary daylight for
some time and then looks at a living thing without the filter, the aura of that thing becomes
visible for a short while. This information probably originates with the British Dr W.J.
Kilner,18 who worked during the early part of this century on the human aura, employing
magenta filters. Now, if the eye accommodates in the same way as our other senses do, then,
after looking for some time through the red filter, it may begin to recalibrate the visual range,
taking red as it were the usual light blue (of the sky in daylight). Hence, when the filter is
removed, the usual range may, for a short while, extend down into the Infra-red.
Clairvoyant faculties
This latter idea brings up an interesting explanation for psychics like the Anthropologist Dr
Rudolf Steiner,19 who are able to see into the Spiritual Realm. Suppose that for reasons of
exceptional physiology (or possibly only of mental programming) they are able to perceive a
greater range of frequencies than is normal, and can therefore see into the Infra-red and the
Ultra-Violet realms?
In conclusion, I would like to bring a few points to the fore:-

Man's pollution of both the material level
and the finer levels?
Ever since the Industrial Revolution, spurred on by 19th century Rationalism, we have been
poisoning and disturbing life for other types of physical beings on this Planet. Perhaps with
the harnessing and mass employment of electromagnetism, we have now started on yet a
further stage, i.e., the poisoning and disturbing for a whole variety of beings dwelling on the
subtler levels of this Planet?
If so, is it any surprise that many of them should be hostile towards us?
I see no reason to consider the lower unseen kingdom - i.e., the Lower Etheric - to be in any
way different from the Animal Kingdom in which we ourselves live. Some of the animals
here like us humans. Some of them hate us. And some are simply benign and objective.

(Incidentally, one very highly-placed British-trained Arab doctor, Dr Adil

Mosa Al-Nahhas, MB, Chb (Baghdad), MSc (London), who was educated and
trained at London University and St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and
who in 1984 was the Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, in the
Institute of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, Aliwiya, Baghdad, Iraq, had this
to say in a letter to me about the UFOs and the "JINNS" dated March 22,
1984, and which I subsequently published on page iii of FSR Vol.29, No.4
(1984).
"Regarding the explanation of the verse from the Holy Qur'an which you
quoted on page 8 of FSR Vol.28, No.6, I could not find in any of my reference
sources a better explanation for the UFOs than yours. The sources all speak of
some sort of 'smokeless fire, a pure flame which penetrates even the orifices of
the skin and which kills!'"
(In further private correspondence with me, Dr Al-Nahhas, who has long been
a subscriber to FSR, agreed with me that maybe plasma, or something of the
nature of plasma, may be involved. At any rate - something - as he says, that
is not yet known in our modern Science.)
Apropos of this matter of the "Islamic theory about UFOs", it is to be noted

that, in the new and enlarged 1989 edition of her very important book "The
Tujunga Canyon Contacts" (first published in 1980. See her article "Can We
Battle These Entities?", in FSR 33/3, 1988), Ann Druffel, FSR Consultant and
Contributing Editor to MUFON UFO JOURNAL, has shown herself to be the
only person in the Western world who has had the guts to state that she thinks
the "Jinn Theory" may very likely be right. (Several other leading "Ufologists"
have written privately to me to say that they too think there "might be
something in it". Not one of them has had the guts to say so publicly).
On page 285 of the new paperback edition of the "Tujunga Canyon Contacts",
Ann Druffel discusses the "underground denunciation, slowly increasing to
diatribe, directed against FSR, mainly by English researchers who disagree
violently with Creighton".
Some of my correspondents seem to think that this deluge of venom is directed

at me "because I am a Muslim"(!). I don't happen to be a Muslim. I have been
a student of Hindu Vedanta and of Buddhism for almost 50 years. And I
happen to detest a great deal of modern Islam, and the modern Ayatollahs, for
their cruelty and bigotry and sub-human intolerance, in which they are even
far worse than the Christians have ever been. (And that is saying something!)
The reason for the hate-FSR campaign is far simpler and far easier to find than
that. It is:-
In the seven years since I took over the editorship, FSR has not foundered
without trace, as they all hoped it would. Several of the venom-bags even
wrote to me at the outset giving me details of how they intended to bring this
about. The objection to me is in any case not based on any "religious" grounds,
since none of these individuals is remotely "religious", as their conduct proves.
(On the other hand, had I been a Commie, like some of them, things would no
doubt have been very different.)
(3) While the Qur'an has several express references to the fact that the physical
body of man is made of "soil", or "clay", or "loam", as it is rendered by
various translators, and that the bodies of the Jinn are of "smokeless fire" or
"smokeless flame", as already stated, the description of the bodies of the
Angels (Malak, pl. Malayikat) as consisting of "light" (nur) is not to be found -
so far as I can see - within the Qur'an itself, but in the body of traditional notes
and references known as the Hadith.

(5) We should not overlook the claim, which has been repeatedly voiced, and
appears to be well-founded, that curiously enough - it was the Americans'
radar which brought about the malfunctioning and resultant crashes of the
first discs in 1947 and 1948!

made a remarkable impact upon the medical profession and the hospitals in
recent years. With his books and articles and his School of Electrocrystal
Therapy, and his many journeys overseas to demonstrate and to lecture, he has
really "started something", and that "something" deserves attention.

(7) It seems difficult to establish when this term "astral" was first employed by
Western mystics and occultists. Interestingly enough, however, it is a fact that
away back in the earliest Sanskrit literature of 2,000 years ago, there is a
philosophical or metaphysical term, "Akasha", which may possibly encompass
both "astral" and "etheric". And it is also a highly interesting fact that, when
the British scholars in the 19th century set about translating India's great
classical texts into English and making the richness of Vedanta known to the
world, they cast around for a long time in search of a good rendering for
"Akasha", and finally they plumped for the words "Ether" and "Etheric".
According to the ancient Hindu philosophy and cosmology, "Akasha" is in fact
one of the seven recognized states of matter. Whereas we in the West perceive
and recognize "matter" in three forms - solid, liquid, and gaseous - the ancient
Hindu writers state emphatically that there is also "Ether" ("Akasha"), and
that there is not merely one form of Ether, but four different levels of it, thus
giving a total of seven levels on which existence is possible.
During the 19th century the hypothesis of the existence of the Ether (from the
classical Greek word for the upper atmosphere) as a substance filling all space,
inclusive of those volumes occupied by ordinary matter, and serving to
transmit those forces (gravitational, electric, magnetic) which one material
object exerts on another located at a distance, seems to have been accepted by
all competent Western scientific authorities, although there was, of course,
diversity of opinion as to the Ether's possible properties. So far, then, one
might have said that this Western concept of the all-pervading Ether
corresponded very largely and very neatly to the old Hindu idea. By 1850 the
concept of the existence of the Ether appeared to have triumphed, but the
failure of the famous Michelson-Morley Experiment in 1881 dealt it a fatal
blow, and by 1900 it seems that no Western scientists any longer believed in it.
Nevertheless I recall that by the 1920's, so important a scientist as Paul Dirac,
who died only recently, was expressing most emphatically his conviction that
"we would have to return to the Ether Theory".
So - who knows? Maybe the ancient Hindus were right after all!
(8) and (9) What is called the "Mental Level" in Western philosophical, religious, and
"occult" speculations corresponds very exactly with the level of what is called
in Sanskrit "Manas", MIND, cognate with the Latin word MENS. In the Hindu
scheme of things this was another one of the seven levels of which the
Universe is constructed.
(10) and (17) Trevor James Constable, a New Zealander by birth, was serving as the Radio
Officer aboard the huge British luxury liner RMS Queen Mary in the years
immediately following World War II. And our Editor of that time, Waveney
Girvan, published the first article by Trevor James (the pen-name being used
then by Constable) in FSR Vol. 5 No. 6 (Nov/Dec. 1959), under the title
"Saucers And Psychism".
Subsequent articles were "Scientists, Contactees & Equilibrium" FSR Vol. 6,

No. 1 (Jan./Feb. 1960); "Space Animals - A Fact of Life", in FSR Vol. 6 No. 4
(July/Aug. 1960); "Get Off The Defensive" in FSR Vol. 6, No. 5 (Sept./Oct.
1960); "The Case For Contact", in FSR Vol. 7 No. 6 (Nov./Dec. 1961) and
Vol. 8 No. 1 (Jan./Feb. 1962); "Ufology: Something More Than A Science", in
FSR Vol. 8 No. 4 (July/Aug. 1962).
Naturally, Trevor James Constable's claims to have made Infra-red

photographs of some mysterious and unknown forces or energies or even craft
or living beings (some of the photos look, as Constable says, merely "two-
dimensional") have been received with total suspicion by not only all
scientists, but also by all laymen who cling to the purely materialistic
explanation for everything. I regret that I lack the necessary knowledge
required to say more about it. But I will state most emphatically my complete
confidence that Robert James Constable is no trickster, but, more likely, a
great pioneer. (As such, he cannot expect to be treated any better than his
remarkable contemporary, Dr Wilhelm Reich, who had the misfortune to re-
discover - as Constable has done - some of the things that the great German
scientist Baron Karl von Reichenbach (1788-1869) had been investigating.
Though pilloried then and forgotten today, Karl von Reichenbach at least did
not die t the stake or on the scaffold, as so many pioneers have done. But Dr
Wilhelm Reich did. He died in 1957 as the result of incarceration in a United
States prison, and because he had discovered too much. Such a termination of
life is called murder. And justly so.)
(11) They Live In The Sky!", by Trevor James, appeared in 1958, when he was 26
years old, and was his first book. It only underwent two impressions and the
photographs in the first were much better and clearer than the second. The
brave sponsor and publisher of this "uncomfortable" book was Dr Franklin
Thomas, and there were plenty who felt no surprise when they learned that Dr
Thomas had died very soon after its appearance. Trevor James Constable's
second, and far better known, book, is "The Cosmic Pulse Of Life", published
in 1978 by the Merlin Press. It discusses at length the ideas of Dr Rudolf
Steiner and Dr Wilhelm Reich and likewise the hounding and persecution of
another equally important pioneer investigator of "unpopular" subjects, Dr
Ruth Drown, who was also "legally murdered".
(12) The young British paragnost, Matthew Manning (born 1956) has obliged
not a few doctors and scientists to take "psychic phenomena" seriously. In June
1974 he was the subject of extensive tests and experiments on Toronto.
Twenty-one leading scientists, among them Britain's Nobel Prize Winner in
Physics Prof. Dr Brian Josephson, and Dr George Owen, examined Matthew
and his abilities, and having done so they at once stated publicly that he was
probably the most gifted psychic in the western world. The scientists'
discovery in Matthew of an entirely new brainwave pattern has set a milestone
in psychical research. With his three books and numerous lectures and
cassettes and many TV and radio appearances, Matthew Manning has become
known to most households in Britain and many overseas. He is also a healer
with many remarkable successes to his credit, and there are cases of people,
formerly gravely ill, who have been cured simply by listening to his tapes.

(16) BARON VON REICHENBACH (1788-1869). A remarkable pioneering
German scientist, who, like so many others whom we have mentioned, had the
misfortune to be born far ahead of his time. There is a mysterious vital force or
energy that permeates all Nature. It is bluish in colour. It can be demonstrated
visually, by heat, and by electrical charge, in plants, animals and human
beings. It may well be the most important Force in the Universe. But it has one
strange and perplexing characteristic: it can only be perceived by individuals
of great sensitivity under careful guidance by sympathetic scientists. In other
words, it is in the same predicament as the study of telepathy, clairvoyance,
and other subjects of Parapsychology. Baron von Reichenbach was not the first
human to have stumbled upon this mysterious force, to which he gave the
name of OD. Two thousand years ago and more, the sages and gurus of India
knew all about it. And they had a name for it. They called it PRANA (the Life
Principle). It was also the Vis Medicatrix Naturae (Healing Power of Nature)
of Hippocrates in the days of ancient Greece. It has been rediscovered many
times, and continues to pop up, as the Mana of the Polynesians; the Telesma of
Hermes Trismegistus; the Pneuma of Galen and the Greek Stoics and others;
the Astral Light of the Kabbalists; the Spiritus of Fludd, and the Magnetic
Fluid of Mesmer. And nearly a century after the death of Baron von
Reichenbach, another German, Dr Wilhelm Reich, was rediscovering it and
calling it ORGONE - and lost his life on account of his "unwelcome"
revelations.
Von Reichenbach had a brilliant career as a metallurgist, building some of the

first big steelworks, blast-furnaces etc., and achieving vast wealth as an
industrialsist. He was also a recognized expert on meteorites. But all to no
avail. None of that earned him a decent hearing anywhere once it became
known that h e had discovered this new universal cosmic force and named it
OD.
In 1845 he published his findings. From then until the day of his death in 1869
he and all his indefatiguable studies were totally ignored or condemned
without a hearing. But they remained the precious possession of a small
number of scientists and students who have kept the memory of von
Reichenbach and his work alive for posterity.
The most important of Baron von Reichenbach's publications are the

following:-
1. Untersuchungen uber die Dynamide des Magnetismus, der Elektrizitat, der

Warme, des Lichtes, in ihren Bezihungen zur Lebenskraft. (2 vols.) (English
title: Researches Into The Forces Of Magnetism, Electricity, Heat, and Light,
in relation to the Life Force.) The English translation by Dr William Gregory,
Professor of Chemistry in the University of Edinburgh, came out in 1850.
2. Odische-Magnetische Briefe. (1852). (English title: "Odic-Magnetic

Letters".)
He also wrote a mass of other material, none of it, I believe, ever translated
into English. In his native land, Germany, Baron von Reichenbach had a vast
reputation as a scholar and a scientist. Today you will not even find his name
in the Encylopaedia Brittanica! Yet Chemistry, in particular, owes him several
important discoveries, notably those of paraffin (1830), eupion (1831),
creosote (1832), and pittacal (1833)! In the field of geology, he was the first
person to produce an exact, scientific account of the geological formation of
Moravia (now part of Czechoslovakia). This was published in his
"Geologische Mittheilungen aus Mahren", in 1834.
