Quayle is probably deluding himself if he thinks that his book Standing Firm can help bring him back from political oblivion and prepare the way for a president bid in 1996. It is not that the Republican nomination in entirely beyond his grasp. There are still a good number of Republicans who actually respect him as a man of convictions who fought for conservative corner in an administration characterized by mush, drift and reflexive appeasement of the Washington liberal establishment. Quayle was a victim of former Security of State Jim Baker who secretly organized and masterminded the Dump Quayle movement. Although the field is fragmented for Quayle with a deep rift between the establishment wing of the party and the social conservatives, the hot choices are Robert Dole and Colin Powel, the former chairmen of Joint Chiefs of Staff. But it is not yet clear Powel is a Republican. But dont write off Quayle.
