Considering potential healthrisks generated by inappropriate manufacturingpractices in milking and livestock, the ColombianGovernment issued a decree that designatesrequirements for commercializing of raw milk for directhuman consumption, including health conditions forproduction, storage, and distribution guidelines.There are approximately 619,000 people linked toinformal milk chain in Colombia, and 4,000 peopleinvolved in the municipalities of “Cuenca Lechera delCauca”. For these people to accomplish the currentregulation and to participate in the raw milk marketwith safe products, it is necessary to incorporateinnovations that ensure safe conditions in production,cold storage and distribution.

En Via Lacta is launched under the public-privatepartnership “Alianza Pioneros de la Innovación Social”that includes the National Agency for OvercomingExtreme Poverty (ANSPE), ten private enterprises in thecountry, the Multilateral Investment Fund and threefoundations, whose efforts are focused on marketincentives at the base of the pyramid.This opportunity was identified by three milk producersasociations Asiapromiras (located inside the IndigenousReservation of the ‘Ambalo’ ethnic group, in themunicipality of Silvia, Cauca), Ascemol (made-up by theindigenous people of the ‘Kokonukos’ ethnic group, inthe ‘Paletará’ Council), located in ‘El Molino’ village, in themunicipality of Purace) and Santa Helena in Popayan.Their mission is to improve living standards of itsassociates by means of generating stable income fromthe commercialization of raw milk and its derivatives.Asiapromiras and Ascemol have being working jointlywith ‘Fundación Alpina’ as part of small Agro-Industrialalliance of Producers in the state of Cauca with thepurpose of strengthening competitiveness and improvethe wellbeing of associated families.Besides this organizations, the opportunity will bedeveloped in partnership with the Association of rawmilk Distributors of Popayan (ASEXLECP), needtechnology to (ASEXLECP), that is located in Cauca state.
