6 FIGURE GRID REFERENCES


To give a grid reference for a whole grid square we use 4 figure grid references to locate it on the map. To locate a specific point within the grid square we give it a 6 figure grid reference. This is how you give a 6 figure grid reference for a specific point on a map: 1. Your first task is still to locate the bottom left hand corner of the square you want as it is from here that you take your reading. 2. So the 4 figure grid reference for the whole square is 1844 but you still need 2 more numbers. 3. To find these 2 numbers you need to imagine that the square is divided into 100 smaller squares - and each line divided into tenths. 4. Then you go Along the corridor counting the tenths 5. Then you go Up the stairs counting the tenths. 6. So the 6 figure grid reference for the red circle is
