Artifact 5: Literacy Learner Project Program Goal: 1 Standards: 4 This artifact shows how much a teacher can gain

by working with just one individual student. Every day in my classroom I work with over 120 students and try to help each of them as much as possible but obviously I am not able to work with each student one on one as much as I would like. The literacy learner project from TE 846 accommodating differences in literary learners was a way for me to look closer at how my teaching can affect one individual student. I was able to take reading comprehension lessons I would like to use with a whole class and see how they work with one individual student. This helped me develop skills to teach reading to different literacy learners. The focus of this class was on developing reading skills within all the different types of students we have in class with us. My focus was on developing skills to read between the lines in fictional texts. I knew from the research I conducted that I needed to provide students with multiple strategies that she can utilize when reading fictional complex texts on her own. I helped the student with her note taking strategy and her questioning techniques when reading fictional texts. Through this one on one instruction, she was able to improve her ability to read beyond the surface level of a text and answer questions regarding what is being said beneath the lines. This artifact is important because it shows how I have developed as a reading teacher through the MATC program. As an English teacher, I knew that had skills for teaching reading that other colleagues may not have had but I knew that I could still improve. I used this class and this assignment as an opportunity to develop reading strategies I could teach to all of my students and share with my colleagues to use as well. It is important that we all teach reading strategies to our students so that they are more prepared to do reading they will encounter after high school.
