Contest
Rules
1. The contest is limited to students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 attending Middle (also K-8) Schools and grades 9, 10, 11,
and 12 of High Schools within The School District of Philadelphia.
2. Essays must be on the topic, “How Can Parents Partner With My School?” and should be no longer than 250 words
for Middle Scholars and 350 words for High Scholars. (The term parent refers to anyone who shares responsibility for
the well being of a child and is actively engaged in his/her education.)
3. If hand written, the essay must be neatly printed on every other line.
4. If typed, the essay must be double spaced, using Times Roman font no larger than 14 point and no less than 12 point.
5. All entries must have a cover page that includes the student’s name, current school, grade, mailing address or e-mail
address and home phone number.
6. All entries must be received by Friday, August 7, 2009 at 3 p.m.
7. Entries that do NOT follow the suggested format will be disqualified and will not be read.
8. Entries should be brought or mailed to The School District of Philadelphia, 440 North Broad Street, Room 114;
Philadelphia, PA 19130; ATTN: Denisa Hurst or The Parent and Community Resource Center at 440 North Broad
Street. They can also be faxed to 215-400-4048, or e-mailed to: dhurst@philasd.org
9. Entries will be reviewed and the Parent Appreciation Day Planning Committee members, Parents, and/or District staff
will pick winners.
10. All decisions made by the Committee in determining contest winners are final.
11. Representatives from the Planning Committee, our sponsors, or their families are not eligible to enter.
12. Our sponsors, The School District of Philadelphia or any member of the Planning Committee cannot be held
responsible for lost entries.
13. The top contest winners for each grade will be announced at the Parent Appreciation Day event on Saturday, October
3, 2009 at noon at 440 North Broad Street.
14. The winners‚ names and likeness may be used for publicity purposes without further compensation.
15. Participants agree that the sponsors, The School District of Philadelphia, or any member of the Planning Committee
will not be liable for any injury that may occur in connection with this contest or the receipt of any contest prize.
16. The top eight (8) contest winners (one for each competing grade) will receive an Apple brand IPOD. Additional prizes
may also be available for the top contest winners.
17. One 1st place winner in grades 5-8 and 9-12 (total of two) will win a Laptop.
