Only a few years separate us from the tercentennial of Jonathan Edwards's birth in 1703. Before that anniversary, however, the
world will mark the coming of a new millennium, a moment which promises to overshadow all other celebrations. In all
likelihood festivities surrounding the year 20002001 will exhaust our collective capacity to commemorate most other historic
moments with more than a passing glance. And yet, if present evidence is any indication of future prospects, the odds are rather
good that 2003 will not pass without substantial attention being paid by some to Jonathan Edwards, who is, arguably, America's most significant religious thinker.

Were Edwards alive today and moving with us toward the close of the century, there is reason to believe that he would be fully
engaged with watching the waning years of this millennium, probably urging his parishioners and his readers to be ready for an
impending event of great significance. As a young man, in the fall of 1723, Edwards speculated that the year 2000 is the
moment at which "Satan's kingdom in the world" will be "totally overthrown" and ''receive its finishing stroke." He expected
that the "sabbath of rest," or the millennial age, would be inaugurated at that time. 1 More than twenty years later, he was less
confident about his forecast, suggesting that it might take a miracle for the progress of the gospel in the world to be sufficient to
meet that deadline.2 Either way, for certain his own birth date would have faded in significance for him when compared with
the potential events anticipated at the turn of the millennium.

Historians, fortunately, are not required to be accurate predictors of the future, and so my speculations about future directions in
the study of Jonathan Edwards are exactly thatspeculations. And yet there are substantial grounds for offering such a judgment.
The study of Jonathan Edwardshis life, thought, and influenceremains a growth industry today. No more striking evidence of
this fact exists than the recent publication of a new updated bibliography of works focusing on Edwards.3 An astonishing amount of scholarly attention is being lavished on him today. And there appears to be no end to this stream of publications.
