Entering Phase II
In 2010 we envisioned four phases for our ministry in Angola: Phase One: Build the foundational knowledge and relationships we need to be successful mentors and church planters. During phase one we will focus on (1) learning and research and (2) building relationships. Phase Two: Begin church planting and implementing strategy on a small-scale in Huambo province, with our Angolan partners, in order to gain experience and momentum. Phase Three: Expand church planting to the national level, focusing on equipping Angolans to continue this work. Phase Four: Phase ourselves out of the ministry in such a way that the work will continue without our presence. The past year marked our transition from our first ministry phase to phase two. We have made steady progress toward our phase two goals despite some discouragement. For the coming months we will continue to focus on 4 young church plants, striving to help these congregations mature and grow. Praise God for His work in Angola and pray with us for the continuation of His harvest.

Ministry Report
Over the last year, we have employed 2 approaches in local ministry: home Bible studies and church plants. First, we helped begin and sustain three home Bible studies with the aim of helping existing Christians mature in their faith. Second, we helped our Angolan coworkers launch four new church plants. Two congregations in Kuito (a two-hour drive from Huambo) have been blessed by the leadership of Simo a mature Christian man who spent a decade working with the church in the Maheba refugee camp (Zambia). The two congregations in Huambo have struggled, largely due to leadership problems. In the Lossambo congregation, no local leadership emerged after nearly a year of our involvement in the community due to apathy among those who might be church leaders. We have withdrawn much of our effort in this neighborhood and shifted focus to a new area, Calilongue. In the So Lus congregation, the church struggled through a transition in which the Angolan church planter, Francisco, showed poor judgment, installing a corrupt man to lead after Franciscos departure. The congregation endured a series of taxing conflicts, but emerged on a healthier path with a core group of young men who are growing in maturity and leadership abilities. As we continue developing a nation-wide strategy, we traveled with national church leaders from Luanda to visit the church in 9 provinces. These travels afforded an excellent opportunity to form deeper relationships with these men and form a clearer picture of how we might serve the church in other provinces with the greatest impact.
