Wednesday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. the Cambridge Historical Society & Museum will hold the third in a series of summer Wednesday night programs at the Museum on Broad Street. Mr. Ken Gottry, a local historian, will speak of his project - the history of the Yellow Brick Road celebrating its 100th anniversary. In the 1800s the flooding of Blairs Brook (now Owl Kill) made Main Steet and Spring Street impassable for days even after the briefest of showers. The East End and West End were physically, politically, and economically separated. In 1913 the village voted to pave Main Street with yellow bricks. While the project served its ultimate goal of uniting the two communities, it also emphasized their long-held sense of independence. Following in his fathers footsteps, Ken Gottry, a traveling computer consultant, dabbles in local history. Ken will relive the villages history, culminating in the construction of the Yellow Brick Road by his great grandfather, William Hitchcock. Come out on August 14 at 7:00 p.m. and hear Ken relive this important event in the history of Cambridge. The Museum will open at 6:00 p.m. for tours with refreshments to follow. CHICKEN BBQ- Ashlar Masonic Lodge in Greenwich is trying something new this year. Take out chicken barbeque from Giffys Barbecue in Clifton Park every Sunday until the fair at the lodge rooms on Rt. 40 North in Greenwich. Serving from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or until sold out. Menu includes 1/2 chicken, baked potato, cole slaw, rolls & butter. Price $10.00. THE FLAMINGOES ARE BACK! A FUN FUND RAISER! Residents of Washington County and the surrounding area should keep their eyes open for a wayward flock of pink flamingoes that just might show up on a front lawn in your neighborhood! The flamingoes are on the move to benefit the Haynes House of Hope, a comfort care home for the terminally ill in Granville. If you wake up to find the flock resting in front of your house, the only way to make them leave is to make a $25 donation to Haynes House. For this donation, you get to decide where the flock will land next. Its all in good fun and for a good cause. To arrange for a flocking, call Haynes House at 518-642-8155. The flock is willing to travel throughout the area, so lawns far and wide can be visited by the fabulous flamingoes. The Haynes House of Hope, located at 7187 State Route 140 in Granville, serves the terminally ill and their families. The residents stay and care are provided free of charge. Since Haynes House receives no funding from insurance or government agencies, it is totally dependent on fundraising events, donations, grants, and the generosity of the community to fulfill its mission. More information is available at www.thehayneshouseofhope.com or by calling 518-6428155.

August 9, 2013 www.addigest.com CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS- Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited to exhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at home at the 2013 Warren County Youth Fair on Saturday, August 10th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. In addition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources, vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thursday. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged based on the capability of the youth, and not by comparing one youth and/or exhibit against another (referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhibits must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 10th from 9:00AM to 4:00PM at the fairgrounds. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. For more information on how to exhibit at the Youth Fair please contact the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center in Warrensburg (623-3291 or 668-4881) or visit Extensions web site at: http:// www.cce.cornell.edu/warren THE CCC CONTINUES TO REACH FOR THE STARS. The Salem Courthouse Community Centers newest club, the Salem Astronomers, is in its second year and continues to grow in popularity. Under the direction of Bill Frederick, the club has attracted much interest and has a growing membership. The club meets at the CCC at 7 pm on the third Wednesday of each month with the objective of sharing a common interest in astronomy and learning more about the cosmos. Bill is a hands-on club director emailing members daily with updates so they can navigate their way through the night skies. Guest speakers of interest are invited regularly, and Bill has offered members the opportunity to observe the night sky using the powerful telescope at his home. New members are always welcome, and Bill invites anyone to email his recently changed address directly at wfrederi@wildblue.net for additional information. STEAK ROAST: The Fish Creek Rod and Gun Club will have its Steak Roast on Saturday 17 August at the club house starting at 12 noon thru 6PM. Price per ticket is $20.00, ticket must be purchased not later then Monday 12 August 2013. For information contact Kathy at 518-788-6388 or Ed at 222-5969. All are welcome to attend, members and non members. 18TH CENTURY ARTISANS TO GATHER AT SCHUYLER HOUSE- Over 25 colonial artisans will ply their crafts at the Philip Schuyler House on Sunday, August 11, from noon to 5 p.m. at the free annual 18th Century Day celebration. Renowned tinsmith Walter Fleming of Ballston Lake uses tin snips, anvil and mallet to create sconces, lanterns, candlesticks and other household items. Members of the Sharp & Spicy 4-H club will serve punch and cookies. A pulled pork dinner will be served from 1-4 pm at the Old Saratoga Reformed Church on Burgoyne Street. Call 695-6638 for reservations. Walk-ins are also welcome. The Old Saratoga Historical Association and the National Park Service sponsor this annual event. For more information call 664-9821.

Blinkys Random Thoughts

Paraprosdokians are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently humorous. 1. Where theres a will, I want to be in it. 2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But its still on my list. 3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 4. If I agreed with you, wed both be wrong. 5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public. 6. War does not determine who is right - only who is left. 7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. 8. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research. 9. I didnt say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you. 10. In filling out an application, where it says, In case of emergency, Notify: I put DOCTOR. 11. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. 12. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice. 13. I used to be indecisive. Now Im not so sure.. 14. To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target. 15. Going to church doesnt make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car. 16. Youre never too old to learn ... something stupid. 17. Im supposed to respect my elders, but its getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

P.O. Box 620, Shaftsbury, VT 05262 802-375-2898 Mon. closed; Tue. 11-3:30; Wed. 11-7; Thu. 11-3:30; Fri. 11-7; Sat. 11-3:30; Sun. 12-3 My name is Ana and Im a 3yr. old calico who was brought to Second Chance after I was found as a pregnant stray. Im a little shy at first but once I get to know you, Im friendly and mellow. I also have a bit of an independent streak! I would be fine with other cats or children, but Im not too sure about dogs. If I sound like the girl for you, please come and visit me and give me my forever home! Hi Im Ashley and Im a pretty and petite little girl. I can be a little shy until I get to know you. Once Im comfortable with you though, I love attention and to be petted. I have a bit of an independent streak in me so Id be most happy in a quiet home that allows me to be an indoor/outdoor kitty. Since I came to Second Chance after living on a farm, that might be just what I need again. So if you are looking for a kitty to complete your life and I sound perfect for you, please come by and meet me! Hi my name is Rocky! I am a 6 month old American Shelter Dog. I came to Second Chance because I was too much for my previous guardian to handle. I love attention and to play with all sorts of toys! I would really like a home where I can have someone to run around and play with and I love the water!! I can go to a home with children 6 years or older; cats and dogs upon introduction. If I sound like the guy for you, please come see me at SCAC!! Hi my name is George! Im a very friendly and affectionate two-year-old Coonhound. I came to Second Chance Animal Center from another shelter that was too full. I long for a family who will spend time with me taking me for long walks and hikes! Once we are done, Id love to snuggle up with you on the couch at the end of the day. I would prefer a home with a fenced in yard when Im not on my walks. I can share my home with kids 8 years old and older. I can be a little picky about four-legged companions, so I will want to be your one and only. As a dog that has lived outside my entire life, my new family will need a little patience while I learn to live inside, but I promise Im worth it. Im a good boy with a lot of love to give and I deserve a chance to experience life with someone who will love me back.

www.addigest.com GHOST CARAVAN REGISTERING GUESTS FOR TOUR OF THURMAN SITES; Thurman Station Association (TSA), announces that registration is now open for participation in its August 17th Historical Hauntings of Thurman Ghost Tour: A Journey through Time ($20). This ghost caravan will meet at Thurman town hall and wend its way to four sites in that town where paranormal activity has been experienced and recorded by Sally Feihel of Adirondack Spectral Investigations. Feihel, who organized her group to provide free help to property owners who seek explanations for otherwise inexplicable happenings in their homes, will lead a morning and afternoon tour that day. The morning group will assemble at 10 a.m. at Thurman town hall, and guests will follow Feihel in their own vehicles to four sites where they will hear about the investigations conducted there and be encouraged to open themselves up to the sensation of lingering presences. Ride sharing is encouraged, due to limited parking space at sites. The afternoon group is asked to arrive at town hall by noon, and from noon to 2 p.m. both groups will be served light refreshments and see a demonstration of the evidencecollecting equipment used by Feihel and view some of the recordings taken at area sites. The afternoon tour will caravan out at 2 p.m., returning at 4. Feihel encourages those interested to sign up early, and will offer a discounted fee of $15 for those registering at Thurman Station Showcase on July 27 (1883 Stony Creek Road, Thurman, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or a discount of $3 to those signing up in July at Thurman Monday Night Concerts in the Park, 7-9 p.m., at Veterans Memorial Field, 311 Athol Rd., Athol (ask about tickets at the concession stand). ORIGINAL MUSICAL, WINNING THE LOTTERY OPENS AT FORT SALEM THEATER Fort Salem Theater ends its summer Mainstage season with the World Premiere of an original musical, Winning the Lottery, running for two weekends, August 2-11, at the Salem, Washington County venue. Winning the Lottery begins, for three women who work together in an office, with the realization of everyones dream: they continually play the same numbers, and one lucky day they win forty-four million dollars. Artistic Director Kerr chimes in: How they deal with winning and losing, the people around them, and their own futures creates the dramatic tension and opportunity for song and dance that make musicals entertaining, relevant, funny and even thoughtprovoking. Look for some intrigue, plot twists, and more than a little romance, promises Kerr. Maybe you wont feel like youve won $44 million when you leave the theater, but youll have a good time. And its air-conditioned, adds Budde. So its cheaper than staying cool at the mall! Winning the Lottery plays Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 2 PM, with senior and group discounts available. More information is available on the website (fortsalemtheater.com) or by calling the theaters box office at (518) 854-9200.

The Stovery - Home of Soothing Fires NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for homeuse, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email wchs@wchs-ny.org. THE BATTLE OF BENNINGTON TO BE COMMEMORATED. The Battle of Bennington, fought on August 16, 1777, will be commemorated at the New York State Bennington Battlefield Historic Site on Friday, August 16, starting at 7:00 p.m. The ceremony will be conducted by members of Chapters of the Empire State Society Sons of the American Revolution, The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and other local historic groups in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The commemoration includes a wreath-laying ceremony and a salute with a blackpowder cannon modeled on the one from the Revolutionary War. The Commemoration of the Battle will continue on Saturday, August 17, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a display of art and other material related to the American Revolution by members of the Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution. The Battlefield is located on New York State Route 67, approximately three miles east of the intersection of New York State Routes 67 and 22 in North Hoosick, New York. The Battle of Bennington was fought in the then area of Walloomsac, N.Y. and was a significant victory for American forces. It paved the way for the important American victory in the Battle of Saratoga in October of that year. The Battlefield site offers information about the Battle and wonderful views of the surrounding area. It is open to the public, free. RE: ORAL HISTORY PROJECT The Warren County Historical Society will be conducting oral history interviews during the Rural Heritage Festival and Youth Fair at the Warren County Fairgrounds in Warrensburg, NY on August 10th . The Warren County Historical Society is searching for individuals who would like to participate and are specifically interest in talking with individuals who have some knowledge in three specific areas: World War II Memories: We are looking for individuals who have memories of The Home Front during WWII (1941-45). Do you remember Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the election of 1944, and FDRs death? Also do you remember V-E Day and V-J Day, rationing, victory gardens, movies, songs, etc.? Fairs in Warren County: We are interested in talking with individuals who remember the various County Fairs in Warrensburg and perhaps other locations through the 1960s. Churches: We are looking for individuals who have an interest in the importance of churches in the development of a community. It would be especially interesting to learn why a particular congregation formed in a particular community, and what influence the people of the church had on the community, and the role of the church in creating a gathering place for people to meet for social events. If you are interested in participating in these interviews, you can call the Warren County Historical Society before August 10th (518-743-0734) to make arrangements to be interviewed.
