Aug. 10, 2013 Anglers Quest 2013 Sam Rayburn Saturday Team Series # 8 out of The Umphrey Pavilion at Sam Rayburn, TX began with sixty-eight teamed anglers showing up to fish for the $5,970.00 purse. Any team that entered a minimum of six of the Sam Rayburn Saturday Series events automatically qualified for the two-day Rayburn Championship. The top team in points after the series was declared the Team Anglers of the Year. N. Dee Williams and Jeff Wise were awarded free entries to all 2014 Rayburn Saturday Series events. The teams who entered all eight Livingston Saturday Series events automatically qualified for all three of the Lake Series two-day championships. Any team qualifying for an Anglers Quest Championship will be allowed to enter the Tournament of Champions on October 23-27 at Toledo Bend. The eighth event of 2013 started at 6:15 AM. Sam Rayburn water was in good shape, and measured 2.50 feet below normal pool level with water temperatures running 84-86 degrees. The weather at takeoff was a calm 72 degrees, which warmed to 95 degrees by weigh-in time. The fish catching was decent on Big Sam today, as there were ten limits brought to the scales, for a total of sixty bass at 170.24 lbs, making the average bass weight 2.83 lbs. The team of Randy Despino, from Colfax, LA, and Bill Rogers from, Jasper, TX, ran their bass rig to north lake areas with matted hydrilla to catch their bass, throwing rigged baits in 4-10 feet of water. They managed to cull a number of times to finish in 1st place with a sack of five bass at 19.40 lbs. Bill Rogers also had a Foremost insurance policy through the Salamone Agency, and collected a $200.00 bonus. Their winnings totaled $2800.00 for their day on the water. Weighing-in at 18.57 lbs, Tommy Hill and Bubba Frazier finished in 2nd place.
The team of Tommy Hill and Bubba Frazier, from Kountze, TX, ran Tommys Bullett/Mercury to north lake areas to catch their bass throwing TX rigged worms and lizards, along with top water pop n frogs, in 3-7 feet of water. They managed to cull from many keepers to finish in 2nd place with 18.57 lbs, and made $1300.00 for their day on the water. The team of Chris McCall, from Brookeland, TX, and Clayton Boulware, from Zavalla, TX, ran Claytons Nitro/Mercury bass rig to north lake creek areas to probe the grassy areas holding bass to bring 18.00 lbs to the scales. They finished in 3rd, and collected $650.00 for their day on the water. The team of Ricky Guy from Humble, TX, and Eric Hunt, from Buna, TX, ran Rickys West LTD wrapped Ranger/Mercury bass rig to north lake areas over grass to catch their bass in 4-10 feet of water on jigs. They managed to cull several times to finish in 4th place with 16.05 lbs. The team made $450.00 for their day on the water. The team of Rusty Harvey, from Nederland, TX, and Chris Harvey, from Vidor, TX, finished in 5th with 15.96 lbs. They were awarded $350.00 for their day on the water. The team of Mike Needham and Todd Gualandri finished in 6th with 14.50 lbs, and collected $240.00. The Big Bass in this event, brought to the scales by Doc Eddleman and Mark Thompson, was a fine 6.77 pounder that netted them $150.00. Protection is Key to Preventing Sun Damage

For millions of Americans, there is no place they would rather be than on the water enjoying the boating experience. Whether you are water skiing, fishing or just enjoying time with friends on a beautiful sunny day, being on the water is an extremely popular form of recreation. As with any outdoor activity, there are precautions that should be considered, and not all of them revolve around the safety equipment or the safe operation of your vessel. Everyone who spends a lot of time on the water shares a concern about exposure to the sun and, without taking the proper precautions, there is potential of falling victim to a number of health problems that can arise as a result. The sun contains beneficial rays that enhance the bodys natural production of vitamin D, but it also bombards us with potentially harmful ultraviolet rays. The sun is a huge nuclear furnace, 840,000 miles in diameter, that the earth orbits at what would seem a safe distance of 90 million miles. However, the fusion reaction that powers the sun and provides life-giving light and warmth to our water planet also emits UVA and UVB rays that take a mere eight minutes to reach earth. In excess, these rays can be damaging to your skin and eyes. How prevalent are sun-related health risks? According to the American Cancer Society, between 800,000 and 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States alone this year, and more than 80 percent are directly related to sun exposure. That means that the overwhelming majority of skin cancer cases could have been prevented by taking simple precautions to reduce excessive exposure. And, as you will see, a good deal of sun-related skin damage is done at an early age, but shows up later in life, so children and teenagers should take these precautions very seriously. Your Skin, Eyes and the Sun The largest organ in your body isnt your brain, your liver or stomachits your skin. It is comprised of three layers, billions of cells, and accounts for about 16 percent of your total body weight. If you scratch your leg, you probably brushed off a hundred thousand skin cells, yet there are plenty in reserve as new skin cells are constantly generated by your body as old ones are lost. UVA and UVB radiation from the sun penetrates the outer layer of skin and can disrupt this natural cycle by damaging the cell producing collagen beneath. It can change cellular DNA, potentially causing it to mutate into cancer cells. It is estimated that just two severe sunburns before the age of 18 can dramatically increase a persons chance of developing skin cancer later in life. There are three forms of skin cancer: basal and squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma, the most serious form. All three forms have been increasing over the last 50 years, which could be an indication of better screening practices as more people become aware of minor
changes to their skin like the appearance of dry patches, moles or freckling. But prevention trumps treatment. Its not just your skin that can suffer negative effects of overexposure to UV radiation. Studies have shown that sun exposure greatly increases the chance of developing cataracts in your eyes. More recent studies link summer sun exposure at an early age to an increased incidence of macular degeneration in adults. Much like skin cancer, eye damage can be averted by taking simple precautions, in this case wearing sunglasses that prevent UVA and UVB radiation from passing through the lenses and into your eyes. This precaution is important for everyone, but especially for children and teenagers. Undetected sun damage early in life leads to vision degeneration at later ages. Advice from a Pro Fisherman Mark Krowka is a legendary fishing guide who has spent thousands of days on the water with charters and in tournaments over the last 30 years. He lives and fishes where the sun is intense year round. He started his career at a time when little was known about sun exposure and its relationship to skin cancer, and has suffered the consequences. Through my childhood and my early years of fishing, before I became a professional, no one talked about sun exposure or skin cancer. So long days were spent in the sun unprotected, said Krowka. I can remember getting sun poisoning after a bad sunburn with the equivalent of first degree burns on my feet. I started fishing professionally in 1977, and that only increased my time on the water where the sun is even more intense because it reflects off the water and hits you from above and below. Over the years, I have had about 30 squamous cell carcinomas
burned off my body by doctors, but it was a basal cell carcinoma on my nose that really got my attention. I noticed just the tiniest bit of blood on my towel after showering and decided to have it checked out. It turned out that the tumor had grown down into my nose and it had to be removed, which required reconstructive surgery and a lot of pain. After that I changed the way I approached being in the sun. Mark started wearing long-sleeve, hooded tee shirts and used paper clips to cinch them tight above his glasses. He wore long hats and bandanas over his nose, long pants, socks and shoes. In a sun intensive place , I wouldnt trust just sun screen for as much as I am out there, he advised. Today, covering up is a little easier with a host of new clothing products. For head protection there are buffs, a balaclava head covering of light material treated to block UVA and UVB rays that covers your head, face, ears and neck. There are gloves made of the same fabric to keep the backs of your hands protected. Tropical shirts and pants are available in breathable, sun-blocking fabrics. For more casual sun worshippers, boaters and anglers or those who live and play in slightly more northern latitudes, there are all types of sunscreen products, but you should use one that has an adequate SPF-rating for the region. Make sure the bottle clearly states it reduces or blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Clothing remains the ultimate protection, and dont forget good polarized sunglasses that blocks ultraviolet sunlight. Boating and being in the sun go hand-in-hand, but you should know the facts about over-exposure and protect yourself accordingly. In this case, the old adage about an ounce of prevention has never been more true.

Shootin the Breeze: Dont Rock the Boat

So we made it through the dog days of summer, but yet we still did not get enough fishing in. Never mind the hot, humid days of working and sweating all day, just waiting for it to cool down so we can hit the banks. We got together to go night fishing on the river. Once we got out there, it seems like all we did was cruise up and down the river bank deciding which spot would be the hot spot. It is a whole different world out there when the sun goes down. The beauty of the light of the moon shimmering on water kept us slightly distracted as our beacon of the night. As the three of us cousins embarked on our boat ride down the river, I (Troy) on the port side of the boat, and rocking back on the stern side was L.D., white knuckled and yelling oh no, oh no! Kevin and I laughed as I asked: how we looking cuz? and down the river we carried on. (LD cant swim) LD says Kev - you are supposed to be looking out! On it, brother Kev replies. I thought I heard something behind us! Troy shot back You cant shine the spotlight in the captains eyes! Now lets back up and explain ourselves, friends. How did the Three Stooges figure out who went where in our (now this is important folks!) ten foot flat bottomed aluminum boat, complete with bait bucket, coolers, (2 of em because you never knew what Kevin a.k.a. Bucky had in his cooler or how long it had been there) trolling motor and battery? Admit it, thats a lot of stuff in a little boat! Thats easy! Cousin Troy is built like a tank - just better looking and a lot funnier. The heaviest cousin drives the boat. Bucky is as tall as Troy and lanky, not to mention the best catcher in the family by far. Hes in the front guiding us. Where did we put Cousin L.D.? You always put the non swimming short people in the middle to bait limb lines. The insults and put downs that night were Hall of Fame worthy. They just cant be repeated in a family magazine. All this and we had only been on the river a few minutes! Now the guide (Bucky) was facing the wrong
way and shining the spotlight behind us calling out the dead heads (stumps and other objects in our path) without a care in the world. How we looking Cuz cries out the captain. Looking good Bucky replies without a turn of his head because he knows the river like the back of his hand. SLAM! The boat goes to one side, and panic takes a sudden grip wow that was close. We had a sudden collision with an unforeseen obstacle that nearly capsized our boat. We quickly recovered, and laughter rolled
down the river banks as LD screams out you two better tighten up or we can just dock this trip now So why did we shoot a lot of breeze with our tens and tens of loyal readers about limb lining a river our dads taught us how to fish years ago? For the record we got skunked that night, and found out bullfrogs only make good bait if kept in the water. Hard to catch a big flathead when Kevins cant miss bait of the night crawled up on the bank and laughed at us!
As many times as we had fished that river both from the bank and out of a boat we made the biggest mistake anyone can make when they are comfortable with their surroundings. We let our guard down and got careless. R-E-S-P-E-C-T Mother Nature and the great outdoors. Both will remind you in a hurry when you dont. Some dont get another chance like the three of us did that night. Rivers change every year, every day, every hour. At night that honey hole you set up shop at during the day takes on a whole new look at night. Scout where you are fishing before the sun goes down to locate any deadfalls, rock piles or other obstacles. If it is available, buy a topographical map of that body of water. Seeing is believing. Go scout your favorite fishing hole during the winter when most water levels are their lowest. Not only can you see potential hazards, it can give you a better understanding of where that state record just may be resting the next dog day of summer. Did the Knoche Cousins have fun that night we got skunked? Always do when we get together. Get a little lucky? That too. Lesson learned? Thats why we are telling you our story friends. Can you imagine not having your best buddies around to fish and hunt with? We always look out for each other. With a whole bunch of cackles and hot air thrown in for good measure. Its the Knoche way. Lesson of the month? Do your homework. Become familiar with your fishing areas in the daytime while there is plenty of light. Study a map of that water body, especially the portion you plan to fish or boat in if it is available. While its good to have a list of things you think you need for your trip, also be sure you have all of the safety equipment and essential items in or on your boat as required by Parks & Wildlife. Team Castledine-Broussard Take July 27 BNB Rayburn Win

2nd place was awarded to Brian Branum and Keith White for their 20.37lbs catch.
Team Castledine-Broussard took the July 27 BNB win with a 21.47lbs weigh-in. The Big Bass payout went to Team WellsGolden for their early morning 8.98lbs catch. The $240 Big Bass Payout of the day went to the team of Jason Wells and Dannie Golden. The team stated the day started off great, but that a late northern wind proved trying. They fished on the main lake structure at 12-18ft. depths and used Diamond Fishing bait. Team Wells-Golden culled up with the 8.98lbs Big Bass around 6:30AM, definitely starting the day off on the right foot. They would like to thank their friends Lance and Jason for their moral support. Out of the thirty-five teams entered, six ended up in the money. 4th place finishers Albert Collins and Donald Randall won $676 for their 19.67lbs catch. The team of Stanley Burgay and Lance Hughes placed 5th with their 19.45lb limit, and were awarded $500. And finishing out the winnings in 6th was the team of Jack Carroll and Scott Thornton; they won $400 for their 18.66lbs weigh-in. The Bass N Bucks 2013 Sam Rayburn Summer Series wraps up August 10 at Twin Dikes.
July 27, 2013 Saturday, July 27, proved to be as humid as ever on Lake Sam Rayburn for thirty-five teams of anglers. But even amid the muggy weather, anglers still managed to keep in good spirits. Bass-N-Bucks tournament trail wound its way to Lake Sam Rayburns Umphrey Pavilion, July 27, in its second leg of the 2013 Sam Rayburn Summer series. Thirty-five teams turned out to compete for their share of the $7,666 in winnings. Anglers had until 4:00 PM to have their 5-fish limit weighed. Showing up to the scales around 3:30 PM, the team of Todd Castledine and Brent Broussard were all business, confident with their catch. Weighing in at 21.47lbs, the team claimed Saturdays win and $3,000. When asked about their day, the team commented that it was great, obviously. Using Carolina rigs in 15ft. depths, they caught an early limit. The team would like to thank God, Legend Boats, Kicker Fish, Mercury Boats, Power Pole, Combat Lures, and Hometown Tackle. In a humorous fashion, the anglers also wanted to give a shout-out to Pantene Pro-V; though Pantene does not sponsor Team Castledine-Broussard, the two men enjoy implementing Pantene Pro-V products in their daily hair-care regimen. With luscious locks, its hard to tell if the team used honed angler skills or the art of hair-attraction to cull the winning catch. Perhaps both. Coming in 2nd place with a weigh-in of 20.37lbs was the highly acclaimed team of Brian Branum and Keith White. Over the course of the day, the team culled more than a dozen fish, catching their last keeper around 2:00PM. Using Santone jigs and Gambler lures, the team commented that the day started off pretty slow; they culled only two fish by 12:00PM. Even with a slow-action

Aug. 11, 2013 Anglers Quest 2013 Sam Rayburn Individual # 8 out of The Umphrey Pavilion in Sam Rayburn, TX began with twenty anglers showing up to fish for the $1240.00 purse. This eighth event of 2013 was started as a trailoring event at 6:15 AM. The weigh-in time was conducted at 4:00 PM. Any individual that entered six of the eight Rayburn Individual Series events automatically qualified for the two-day Rayburn Individual Championship. Ricky Guy was the top Individual in points after eight events, and, thus, was declared the Angler of the Year and awarded free entries to all 2014 Sam Rayburn Individual Series events. Individuals who entered all eight Rayburn Individual Sunday events automatically qualified for all three of the Lake Series twoday championships. Any individual who qualifies for an Anglers Quest Championship will be allowed to enter the Tournament of Champions on October 23-27 at Toledo Bend. Sam Rayburn water was in good shape, and measured 2.50 feet below normal pool level with water temperatures running 82-86 degrees. The weather at takeoff was 72 degrees, but warmed to 96 degrees by weigh-in time. The fish catching was decent on Big Sam today, as there were six limits brought to the scales, for a total of thirty-three bass at 90.34 lbs, making the average bass weight 2.73 lbs. Eagle Rock Energy presents $27,974 to C.A.S.A.
For the past 16 years, Eagle Rock Energy has headed up a fundraising crappie tournament on Sam Rayburn. C.A.S.A., (Court Appointed Special Advocate) has been the biggest of several recipients of the funds raised at their annual event. This year nearly $28,000 was given to the organization. The event is an opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy fellowship during the fishing tournament, fish fry and live auction. Goods and services are donated for the auction, and volunteers line up to cover every facet of the event. The CASA program that advocates for abused and neglected children in the court systems was named as a beneficiary of the 2013 Eagle Rock Energy Crappie Tournament. Funds received will be used to help CASA sustain its mission of advocating for children in the court systems and to train new CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers who will be the voice of a child in court. Keith White and Brian Branum won the Rayburn Summer Series finale with room to spare. Their winning sack weighed in at 21.98 lbs Aug. 10, 2013 Huddled under anchored tents, both anglers and spectators re-defined the term dedication at Saturdays Bass-N-Bucks tournament. All watched and waited, perhaps not so patiently, the tournaments proceedings amidst the torrential downpour plaguing Lake Sam Rayburn Saturday afternoon. Bass-N-Bucks Lake Sam Rayburn 2013 Summer Series came to a finish Saturday, August 10. Twenty-eight teams turned out to compete as it rained bass and bucks, rather than cats and dogs. Weighing-in early at 11:00AM, the team of Brian Branum and Keith White took Saturdays win with a weight of 21.98lbs. Over the course of the day, the team culled more than a dozen fish, catching their last keeper around 2:00PM. Using Santone jigs and Gambler lures, the team commented that the day was slow, due in no small part to the rainfall. Even with the slow-action, Branum and White still managed to showcase their master angling know-how by winning the tournament and $2500. When asked about their newly acquired AOY title, the anglers commented that they thought it was pretty cool. With the beginning of hunting season just around the corner, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Wardens would like to remind hunters to have fun, be safe and BE LEGAL. Here is check list hunters should follow before heading to the field: *Check for legal means and methods in the county you are hunting. *Carry your current hunting license as this may have your hunter education number listed below your name and address. *Clearly identify your target before pulling the trigger. *Carry a sharp knife; cut out the date (month and day) of kill on deer and turkey tags and immediately after kill, attach appropriate tag to the deer or turkey. *Carry a ball-point pen; fill out ranch and county name on back of deer and turkey tags, and dont forget the deer log on the back of the license. *Carry a state drivers license or state personal identification certificate if you are 17 years of age or older. *Fill out a Wildlife Resource Document to accompany any wildlife resource, or part of a deer or turkey that you give to someone else. *Keep all game animals and game birds in an edible condition. *As an additional safety precaution, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, and keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.

The Great Outdoors has always been a huge aspect in my life. I have always lived in the woods, in a cottage type house. Its absolutely wonderful and I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world. In my personal preference I would love to live further in the woods. I find peace in the outdoors and love what God has given us; the serenity and the workmanship that I find in the outdoors prove to me that there is a God, and he is wonderful. I love all the opportunities that the great outdoors provide: hunting, fishing, swimming, canoeing, and especially camping. The list could go on and on. Being a part of the outdoors is like being a part of the community; you have to give back to it for the outdoors to give back to you. The outdoors provides us with nutritious food and natural resources that support our lives. Being a part of the great outdoors makes for a more sustainable life and a better tomorrow; providing a future for the generations to come. Every year, the Sportsmans Bass Club of Southwest Louisiana puts back a portion of the funds from their tournaments to help others. Their summertime open team night tournament is their annual fundraiser for the bass club. They use the money raised from the tournament to award cash scholarships to graduating seniors in the area. Texas dove hunters should see plenty of opportunity this fall as conditions are shaping up for an above average season, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). Dove season kicks off Sunday, Sept. 1 across most of the state. Texas dove hunters number upwards of 250,000 and collectively bag between 5-6 million doves during the 70-day season. Thanks to new rules approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) this year, hunters can possess up to 45 birds three times the daily bag limit. Previously, the possession limit was twice the daily bag. Daily bag limits still apply. The USFWS also approved for this year an expanded Special White-wing Dove Area (SWWDA) in South Texas. The SWWDA will now extend eastward along its current boundary and continue south along Interstate 37 from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, effectively doubling its current size. For the last two decades, white-winged dove populations have steadily expanded both their numbers and their geographical extent, said Dave Morrison, Small Game Program Director with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. We believe, and the Service agrees, an
expansion is appropriate to take advantage of additional hunting opportunities. To take advantage of the earliest possible opening dates for the special area, the season will run Sunday, Sept. 1 through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, and then reopen Saturday, Sept. 7 and Sunday, Sept. 8. The daily bag limit during the combined four-day season is 15 doves in the aggregate to include no more than two mourning doves and two white-tipped doves and hunting during the early season in the SWWDA is permitted only from noon to sunset. Dove season in the North and Central zones will run concurrent from Sept. 1-Oct. 23 and Dec. 20-Jan. 5. The South Zone dove season is set for Sept. 20-Oct. 27 and Dec. 20-Jan. 20, with the regular season in the SWWDA Sept. 20-Oct. 23 and Dec. 20-Jan. 20. According to Shaun Oldenburger, TPWDs Dove Program Leader, hunters can expect to see an increase from last year in dove numbers. It appears that breeding dove numbers have increased from last year in many regions of the state, he said. Increased precipitation helped improve dove production and generate ample food supplies. It should be a good season.

Great news! We have located our long lost Backroads & Backlashes author Jim Binns. Hes GONE FISHING! His latest adventure? Taking his grandson Drake out on Toledo Bend. Boy did they have a great weekend. ( Jim) Had my grandson Drake in for a few days before he goes to college, and here is a quick fishing report... Day 1 - Had a great top water bite - total bass 9 with biggest being 4lb. Had 3 blowups, and onewas
a really nice bass but came unbuttoned. The action was over at 9am.Best baits we used were Zara Spook (white/silver) and Chug Bug in silver and bone finish.Fished nickel jigging spoons for 42 yellow bass,6 crappie and I caught a 15-lb catfish (18- to 22 feet). Day 2 - Caught three basson topwater baits. Had one really big bass hit the bait twice, but didnt get hooked up. I think it hit with a closed mouth but it was a dandy. Topwater bite was very slow with almost no action of baitfish on top. Worked jigging spoons for8 really nice crappie and then we caught a 15-7, 13 and 6 lb catfish .. all on the jigging spoons. My grandson caught the big one, and he was excited!

Jeremy Burge & Kraig Welborn with nice limit of 20.38 lbs which earned them 1st place. August 18th started off with unusual summer temperatures. Anglers were greeted with cooler temps and lower humidity. Did this help the fishing or just the anglers? There were 24 teams that were eager to find out! It was a close race for the win as the total margin in the top three places only had 0.27 lbs separating them. Jeremy Burge & partner Kraig Welborn ended up on top taking the win. They had a nice five fish limit that weighed in at 20.38 lbs. This earned them 1st place and a nice payout of $2,400.00 for their day on the water. Dicky Newberry and John Gunnels came in 2nd with their five fish limit that weighed 20.19 lbs. Their day gave them a payout of $1,400.00. Third place and the final 20 pound bag was weighed in by anglers Billy Gatewood & Jim Furr, their 5 fish weighed 20.11 pounds and earned them $722.00. Big Bass honors and 4th place was won by Randy Despino & Kevin Lasyone. Their five fish limit that weighed 18.19 pounds included a nice Toledo Bend lunker that weighed 6.09 lbs. Their total payout was $630.00. With this being the final 2013 Toledo Summer Series event, the Anglers of the year race was tight. Shane Gibson & Jimmy Johnson earned this title with a total of 65.95 lbs for all three events. Congratulations to both of these anglers! Now it is time for championships and fall tournaments! Control of feral hogs in Texas

One method that can be used for hog control is trapping them in pens.
Feral hogs have shown themselves to be one of the biggest problems in the wildlife world. Hogs cause a large economic impact, compete with native animals for resources, and have a high reproduction rate to name just a few. Currently, the population is estimated at over 2 million hogs in the state of Texas. There are too many hogs to be eradicated, but the problem can be lessened or controlled. This article will take a look at some of the ways to control feral hogs. Hunting is a very common way to attempt to control feral hogs. Hunting can take many forms including shooting from stands, stalking, and so forth (running hogs with dogs will be discussed later). Often times this is done when hunting for other species. Positives are that hogs are being removed and it can easily be accomplished. The drawback is that hunting alone does not remove enough hogs to accomplish control. This method works best in combination with other methods. Shooting is another method commonly used particularly in more open areas with higher hog populations. This involves trained expert shooters using high capacity weapons to shoot as many hogs as can be seen. This can be done from elevated stands, helicopters, or other vantage points. Shooting can remove a large number of hogs in a short time. However, the habitat needs to have large open areas in which to see hogs to be most effective. Shooting can also become very expensive when paying for helicopters, sharpshooters, permits, etc. Running hogs with dogs entails using one or more dogs to trail and catch hogs. Running hogs benefits wildlife in several ways. First, hogs are removed from the area relieving pressure on the area. Second, harassing hog populations can have some influence on where they are, and may help with keeping hogs off of an area. The drawbacks to this method are that the dogs can be hard to control
(keep in a certain area), may interfere with other operations on the land, risk of injury to dogs, and dont remove a large number of hogs. Snaring hogs is becoming more common. This involves using a steel cable with a loop on the end placed in a trail or crossing. When the hog uses the trail the loop will go over the head and then tighten around the neck as the hog continues to move. This method can be lethal or nonlethal depending on the use of cable stops. The benefit is that it is another tool in the arsenal to remove hogs. The downside is that only one hog at a time is removed and there is a high potential for nontarget animals to be caught. Trapping is another method commonly used. The traps used can vary in size from those designed to catch 1 hog at time to large traps designed to catch entire sounders (group of hogs). Traps are baited with corn most often, but anything that will get the hogs to come into the trap works. Traps should be checked at least once a day. This method has the potential to remove the largest amount of hogs, and can be done with a minimum of time on site. The drawback is animals can become trap shy (hard to trap). Hogs have become a big problem in Texas, and removing them is on many peoples minds. The key to removing hogs is to use your brain. This means to pay attention to what is and is not working and adjusting the method or combination of methods as needed. When hunting pay attention to how and when animals are moving. Shooting requires a person to pay attention to laws in the area, shooting area, and how the shooting needs to occur. Be courteous to other folks in the woods and their interests when running dogs. While trapping and snaring be conscious of nontarget animals and check sites daily. These methods can help to get control of this problem and improve the habitat for native wildlife in Texas.

Ingredients 1/2 cup butter, softened 2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate 1 egg, lightly beaten 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup Grape-Nuts cereal 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 pound sliced bacon, cooked and crumbled Directions In a bowl, beat butter and orange juice. Add egg; mix well. Combine flour, sugar, cereal and baking powder; stir into butter mixture. Fold in bacon. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 11-13 minutes or until edges are lightly brown. Store in the refrigerator. Yield: 2 dozen.

SINGING PRAISES OF THE TEXAS RIG Hello, Anglers. As a guide I am ask a lot of questions about boats, electronics, various lakes, latest tackle, new tow vehicles and many other topics that anglers deal with on a regular basis. One question that I often get is what ismy favorite way to catch bass and another is If you could only have one bait to use, what would it be? The answer to the first one is I really dont have one favorite way to catch fish. I love topwater, Texas rigs, wacky worms, jigs, spinnerbaits, drop shot, jigging spoons, crankbaits to name a few. However, if I could only have one method to fish it would be an easy answer for me......The Texas Rig!! With a Texas rig you can fish in 6 inches of water as well as 40 feet of water and you can use finesse worms plus 10 and 12 inch worms and you can fish them weightless or with a heavy sinker of an ounce or more. I mention the Texas rig because we have caught so many bass on them through the years and it has been a dynamite producer for us the past year. Also,it canbe fished anywhere and in all kinds of structure and cover. It really shines in deep grass and especially in deep, scattered hydrilla which is how we are using it this summer.Anglers have the choice of a straighttail worm, split-tailor one with a swimming tail and then you have multiple presentationsthat are possible. Most all anglers have a few secretswe rarelyshareand some of those are how we work various lures.Correct presentation is vital!! No where is presentation (how we present a lure to a fish) more important than when fishingsuper clear water. The southern one-third of Toledo and the mouth of main creeks on south Toledo isvery clear and almost neverstained. Only two times in my 36 years of fishing Toledo have I seen themain lakenear the Texas and Louisiana islands stained. I have seen the mouth of Six Mile stained maybe a half dozen times only to saythat when I make a cast, my boat is usually sitting in clear water. One of the most significant recent improvements in fishing a Texas rig in clear wateris improved technology in fishing line...... mainly fluorocarbon. I basically would not even consider fishing a Texas rig currently without using fluorocarbon. There are a few (but not many) high quality fluorocarbon lines available today but my favorite is Berkley Pro Grade Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon. I use 17 and 15 lb. test most of the time but also use 12 and 10 lb. as well. When using fluorocarbon line with a Texas rig, you have the advantage of it being totally transparent, it has almost no stretch for a solid hook set, improved sensitivity to feel the lightest bite, is extremely abrasion resistant and is super strong. It is an awesome product and once youstart using it, monofilamentjust doesnt cut it. One reminder: Fluorocarbon sinks so it does not work on topwater applications. Finally, one of the best, if not THE best technique for fishing heavy brush is a Texas rig. Theres nothing quite as exciting as crawling a Texas-rigged 10 inch Berkley Power Worm through a deep brush pileand feel that tap-tapandset the hook on a monster

I will say that one of my most productive methods the past few months has been Texas riggingBerkleys Havoc Bottom Hopper and Trick Worms. We are working theseon the outside edge of south Toledos submerged hydrilla (grass). It is important to work it slow and depth has been 16 to 25 feet. Through the August heat and rain Mike Price won the Many Bass Clubs August tournament with a 4 fish 12.40 pound stringer. Price caught his fish in the San Miguel and 1215 area of Toledo Bend using a Carolina rig and jig in 10 to 20 feet of water. William Sims won second place with a 4 fish stringer weighing 11.94 pounds and Larry Dickerson claimed third
place with another 4 fish stringer weighing 11.52 pounds. Jimmy Campbell was this months Big Bass winner with a 5.21 lb lunker caught near the Pendleton Bridge. A total of 51 fish were caught weighing 120 lbs for an average fish weight of 2.40 lbs. Are the bass getting bigger in Toledo Bend Reservoir? Looking over the club tournament data for the 2013 year,
it is clear that the fish being caught and weighed-in at the club tournaments, both stringers and individual fish, has increased. Twenty three fish have tipped the scales above 5 lbs with one over 10 lbs and most stringers at the 15 lb range with one over 21 lbs. I can remember during and following the drought , the winning weights not exceeding the single digits.

Fishing Forecast
Fall is in the air and Big Sam will start to come out of the grip of another hot summer. The nights will be getting longer and things will start to cool down. You should find the lake level somewhere around 6 feet low unless we get some heavy rain by the end of Aug. Keep that in mind when youre running around the Lynn Atkinson lake as you may start to see a lot more cell 979-220-0251 timber above the water. That also means Reel Um N Guide there is a lot more lurking just under the Service, surface. If youre new to the lake get a www.rayburncountry.com couple of maps because each map will show things a little differently. Look at the areas that have timber then add a little to the timberline, that will help you stay a bit safer. There is still timber that moves around from time to time so always keep an eye open for what we call floaters. One day they maybe just off a point and the next 100 yards or further away. As the water drops you will start to see more sandbars and long points just under the water. Be a little cautious as a change in water color from a green tint to a sandy color could mean youre coming up to one of those places. Big Sam is the biggest lake that is solely in Texas with miles of shoreline to fish, most of it undeveloped. There will be a lot of schoolies chasing shad in open water and off points. They can be lots of fun to catch as they push the shad to the surface. So keep something like a Pop-Rs or spoon handy to catch some of them. This is when the topwater bite gets exciting over the grass and lily pads. A lot of different baits come to mind as the grass will be on the surface in a lot of places. This will make for an exciting frog bite over the grass so have a good rod and heavy line on to pull them out of the thick cover.I like to use an American Rodsmiths 7 to 76ft med heavy to set the hook and yak them out of there. A Stanley Ribbit frog is one of my favorites to throw over the grass then burn it back to the boat for some great action. Here are a few more baits for topwater, the Buzz Bait, Spook, Yellow Magic and Pop-Rs. There will be a lot of fish setting on the outside edge of the grass lines. Working the outer edges with a Stanley Spinner Bait or Crankbait can really shake things up. On the deeper edge the fish will be holding on points and creek channels as they move back to the pockets. Heres where a Carolina or Texas rig comes into play working the deeper edge. Then some fish are holding in the deeper grass, thats where the grass jigs come into play. The Stanley Grass jig has put some nice fish into our boat on days when we couldnt get anything going. Its a lot of work and the bite feels a lot different. With practice you learn how the baits work and thats what makes the difference in catching fish. The Crappie will start to get more active around the brush piles as fall gets here. They should start to get into the fall pattern before moving up the river and creeks as they do each year.Dont sit at home and miss out on the fun. Everyone has loved the pontoon with the shade and the changing room with the port-o-potty. We even have a fan that can help if you get hot out there.It makes the trip a lot nicer for everyone. September brings with it little taste of fall. Im not saying that its going to cool down just yet, but most of the time we will start to get a few little cool fronts. Not much temp change but a few days with north wind breeze around the lake which makes all the difference. With that breeze, and of course, with the start the Stephen Johnston, hunting season we can believe that fall Cell# 409-579-4213 is here! Dove season opens on September Johnstons Guide 1, and the dates for teal season will soon Service be released by the Texas Parks & Wildlife gofish@johnstonfishing.com Department, and deer season is right around the corner, all signifying fall. However, we still have lots of fishing to do since the fall season is also a great one for fishing on Sam Rayburn. You will see the start of the early fall patterns for the bass. The hydrilla that has been growing all over the lake will set up things up for great fall top water action. Its time to get your Yellow Magic, Spittin King, Spooks and V&M Buzz baits out and work them down the edge of the hydrilla. Most days the bite will be good early in the morning but on those overcast days they will eat it all day long! Colors for the top water and buzz baits really wont make that much difference but I like to stay with a shad colored pattern. Swim jigs trailed with soft plastic swim baits is another lure that will work great during this month. You can work this around the outside of the scattered grass. V&M makes many different colors of swim jigs from shad to perch. Once you have your jig color chosen, then match the trailer to that. On a white swim jig go with a white trailer, on a perch colored jig you can go with a watermelon seed or watermelon red trailer (for the basics, there are plenty more colors to choose from each with a little different twist to them). A stick (Senko) style bait will work great on the edge of the grass and if there are any holes in the grass you can cast into them too. You can either rig it weightless or with a light slip sinker. Or you can rig it wacky-style and fish it that way too; its just a great all around bait for the fall. V&M makes one called a Chop Stick in several different lengths. September is one of the best months for working a Texas rigged worm off the edge of the grass. I like to use a 1/8 oz, or 3/16 oz Strike King tungsten weight with my rig. You can use from a 7 inch to a 10 inch worm. The crankbait fish will get going later in the month as soon the water temp starts to drop a little. Keep an eye on the temp gauge and be ready for some cranking when it happens. A Strike King 6 or 10 XD on main lake points and ridges from 10 to 16ft of water will be the deal! There isnt grass on the main lake ridges so the fish are always on the move, following the shad around. Make sure and use your Humminbird Down Imaging to help find the bait and thats where you will find the fish. Literacy (and fun) in the garden By Margie Saulsbury, Jasper Master Gardener
September is back to school, but the best education can be life lessons learned in the garden and great outdoors. Pulitzer winner Rick Bragg, who writes about his childhood in Possum Trot, Alabama, says, People ask all the time, whats wrong with kids today? I have long held that they have been brain mushed by too much screen timeI think they do not know how sweet it is to feel the mud mush between their toes. The Outdoor Learning Center, Arboretum and butterfly garden on Water Street in Jasper are the perfect antidote to what many educators call NDD Nature Deficit Disorderthe idea that the cure for what ails our children is just outside the window. Part of the master gardener mission, and master naturalists as well, is to get kids outdoors to find out what they are missing, exercise their imagination with more than glowing screens, and let them discover where fresh food comes from and what it tastes like. Hugh and Beth Pickle still chuckle over the first time they served their grandson broccoli. He looked at it a long time, Hugh said, and then he said to Beth, But Ganny, I dont eat trees. Hed never seen broccoli before and I guess it does look like a little tree. Julia McCormick takes a fanciful approach with granddaughter Lilley. She says, The key to fun in the yard is to find something they like and expand on the idea. Shes four years old and

fascinated with fairies, and she can play with them for hours. For an all-day project, Pawpaw drilled holes in the bottom of an old wash tub and half-filled it with sand for drainage.
Lilley was excited to make an awesome polka dot palace for the fairies that live in my yard. They needed some place to get out of the rain, she told us. She picked out plants at the garden center and painted fairy dwellings from a hobby shop, Julia says. The rest of the day was spent placing the plants, houses and pebbles, and a bright pink umbrella for shade. Finally, Lilley placed fairies in their temporary location because, according to her, the fairies dont stay in one place for very long, Julia says. Sue Singletarys granddaughter Paige is no stranger to gardening, and has been picking strawberries since she could walk. Now shes old enough to accompany Granny on a tour of Watson Preserve near Kountze, and its amazing what little ones can remember. The nature parks director, Pauline Singleton, slit open a pitcher plant to show Paige how this plant catches and digests bugs, a sight many adults have never seen. As Pauline named each bug the plant ate flies, snails, antsPaige repeated each word. Sue says two-year-old Paige can remember the names of many plants and bugs, and the fact that she can identify them later shows shes acquiring skills that will help her when shes ready for school.

They were always curious about my garden as I grow many different vegetables, some of which they had never heard of. Broccoli and kohlrabi were certainly foreign objects to them, Joanie says. As I gently picked the peas, they asked what are those? I told them, English peas. Ewwwww was the comment as they mentioned canned peas cooked by their mom, Joanie explains. She picked a couple of pods, shelled them, and handed each boy a few to sample smiles came upon their faces as they both exclaimed, Sweet!...mmm good! Joanie says they proceeded to help harvest her pea patch and she gave them a bag of fresh peas to munch on and show their mom. They were quite excited that a green pea could taste so good! I cheerfully told them they could eat them raw or have their mom cook them for a few minutes, put a pat of butter on them, and eat away. Maybe I made a couple of young converts that day, Joanie says. FCS agent Cindy VanDevender and volunteers have done many a taste test demonstration to show people how to use fresh fruits and vegetables. The fast food generation is amazed how simple and tasty fresh foods can be.

Newton agent Cathy Pearson plans to teach eating your alphabet with a book called Growing Vegetable Soup. We can teach so many school-readiness skills, Cathy says. Counting; sorting by colors, sizes and shapes; alphabet recognition, with all the excitement out in the garden. Cathys own children always looked forward to digging potatoes. It was a treasure hunt, not just to find potatoes but we also made it a game to sort the shapes, to find a heart shape or one with a face. Cindys program ties in with Butterfly Festival (Oct. 5 in Jasper) with the Very Hungry Caterpillar, a story about what a caterpillar needs to eat become a beautiful butterfly. Were going to plant seeds in an ice cream cone, something the kids can take home to plant
in their garden, cone and all, Cindy said. Agent Chadd Caperton got the kids in 4-H Shooting Sports to lay down arms long enough to learn how to plant a deer food plot. We rarely see youth involved in agriculture nowadays with the competition of video games, smart phones and social media. But that doesnt mean we should give up trying. Getting them involved is easy when a project interests them. One such project was planting wildlife food plots. They planted Ironclay peas for Whitetailed deer. The kids spread seed by hand and by using a spreader over an unprepared seed bed and also over a tilled seed bed. They put up a game camera to monitor wildlife. Each kid came away with more understanding of how soils and plants work together, but more importantly, that a prepared seed bed grows more numerous and healthier forages, Chadd says. My First Shooting Sports Tournament

On August 3, 2013 I shot in my first 4H shooting sports tournament. Ive been watching my brother compete for a while and finally decided I would give it a try. When we first got there I had butterflies in my stomach. I was gonna have to shoot over 100 shots! That was more than Id ever shot in one day! I was on the team with one of my best friends, Rayley. It was her first tournament too. We let the grown-ups go first so we could see how to angle our guns and which clay to shoot first. We shot 10 stations with 10 shots at each station and then a Mulligan station at the end. So I shot a total of 110 shots that day. My arm was so sore! At the end of the day we tallied my score and I had hit a total of 26 out of 110! I was super proud of myself! Ive started practicing more at home with my step-dad and brother and even got a new gun! I cant wait til the next tournament! I know Im gonna do even better!

Recently Texas Parks and Wildlife just finished up field work on Toledo Bend where we were looking at our largemouth bass stocking success in different kinds of aquatic vegetation. It was a big project for a big place with potentially some big ramifications. The thing I realized here at the end is that maybe it is the more subtle details that may yield success or failure than a mile and half stretch of a certain kind of vegetation or even how many bigger fish are lurking around that will potentially eat our stocked baby bass. The purpose of the project originally began out of concern that predation by larger fish (mainly other bass) was hindering our stocking contributions. Those concerns are valid, and TPWD has determined that as much 25% of our stocked largemouth bass can be preyed upon within 24-hours of stocking. We typically stock at least 500,000 largemouth bass into Toledo Bend each year and if those predation rates hold true then just within 24-hours we are already down to 375,000 of our fish still out there with a long way to go yet. Over the course of two seasons we individually marked nearly 110,000 juvenile largemouth bass before they headed out of the hatchery to the lake. We put those fish in selected stocking sites just as we normally do for a typical stocking. Three weeks later we went back to see how many of our fish we could find we didnt find many. The good news is we didnt have too much trouble finding good numbers of naturally
produced largemouth bass. That was to be expected and for our purposes the data is the data. One thing we did do was to go back with all of the fish we collected to see what they had been eating or even if they had been eating. There is a difference in how the juvenile bass are foraging in the different vegetation types we looked at. The three main things we saw in all those juvenile bass stomach samples we looked at was daphnia (a small zooplankton genus Daphnia), grass shrimp (genus Palaemonetes),
and to a lesser degree insect larvae (mayfly and dragonfly). It was either a fish had been eating one of these three things are hadnt been eating at all. We saw that juvenile bass in denser vegetation had a higher incidence of having empty stomachs than in our more sparsely vegetated stocking sites. There was definitely a reliance on grass shrimp with most of the shrimp we pulled from the stomachs measuring between a - inches long. Yes there are a freshwater species of shrimp in
our lakes and they are quite common. Like most shrimp they do well in areas with vegetation and feed on decaying plant material and are important in recycling nutrients in the system. Im sure grass shrimp do not like for themselves to be eaten and they live their shrimp lives accordingly. They are more active at night when the chances of being seen by a predator are less. They also stay on or near the bottom during the day. It is well documented that bass foraging ability has a breaking point in denser vegetation with some happy medium in between. Most likely the reason we saw more empty fish stomachs in the denser vegetation was due to the juvenile bass being hindered in their foraging ability for grass shrimp. They were certainly present as we could see them popping up out of the water while we were electrofishing (grass shrimp are sometimes called popcorn shrimp). Like most things it always comes down to the ability to recognize the little things and in the case of little bass I guess it is no different. Incidentally, grass shrimp are easy to catch and make great bait. running about four feet below high pool. Were heading into the home stretch of summer with shorter days and cooler weather just around the corner. Going into September, well still be fishing a typical summer pattern and hopefully later in the month well start seeing more top water and schooling action on the lake as it gets cooler. Early morning and late evening were working the shallows close to deep water with top water plugs, stick baits, frogs, buzz baits, spinner baits, shallow diving and lipless crank baits and finesse plastics (Senkos, Flukes, and Trick worms). When the sun gets overhead or the bite slows down, back out to deeper water along creek channel drops, river ledges, timberlines, main lake ridges and humps, secondary and main lake points with mid to deep diving crank baits, slab spoons, tail spinners and Texas or Carolina rigged soft plastics. Watch for schooling bass and keep a lipless crank bait, shallow diving crank bait and top water plug handy. The White Bass are running all over the lake chasing shad and you never know when they will blow up. Concentrate around boat lanes, roadbeds main lake points and flats throughout the day. Keep a Rat-L-Trap, shallow diving crank bait or top water plug handy when they are schooling and a slab spoon or tail spinner when they go down.

Bass ~ Good. Start early with a Strike Pro Hunchback wakebait in 3/4 oz. camo color fished around grass or lily pads in 3 - 8 ft. of water. As the day warms up, move out onto humps or into creek bends with 16 - 28 ft. of water. Throw
a 5/8 oz. football head jig rigged with a green pumpkin twin tail grub or a Carolina rig with an Ol Monster worm in blue watermelon. Night fishing is still excellent on Texas rigged Ol Monster worms in blue bruzer color. For best results fish your hunchbacks on a 7 3 medium TFO rod with 30# Fins Windtamer braid. For jigs and Carolina rigs go to the TFO 7 3 heavy action Tactical Series paired with a 20 lb. fluorocarbon. For the Alabama
rig guys TFO has a 7 11 extra heavy. Crappie ~ Slow. On minnows over brush, should pick up later in the month and start hitting jigs in Texas avocado color. Catfish ~ Excellent! Over baited holes along river in 20 - 32 ft. of water on Catfish Charlie and CJS punch bait in crawfish.

LAKE CONDITIONS: As we move into September the lake level is around 168with both generators running on limited schedules usually a few hours on weekdays and shut down on weekends. Water temperatures have dropped slightlyto lower 80s.The lake is in good shape as far as water conditions with north Toledo slightly stained, mid-lake mostly clear and south Toledo very clear. More and more aquatic vegetation is becoming visible as the lake slowly recedes which is a normal situation for late summer and early fall. In some ways, this makes ridges, humps and points easier to read as the grassy areas show up the shape of these structures. FISHING REPORTS/BASS: We continue to use various patterns to catch bass with topwater patterns still in the mix. Some mornings the top-water approach yields significant results
while other mornings it is slow. Basically, I use a walking type bait when there is a wind and wave action and if we have minimal winds and slick surface we usually go with a popper such as Chug Bug, Pro Pop or Yellow Magic which are all poppers with teaser/feathered tails. I usually give the topwater pattern5 to 10 minutes and if no action we go to another approach. I always start on an area where I know there are bass so if they dont want to hit our top-water offering, we move to something else. Our early morning time is too valuable to waste casting a bait that the bass are not hitting. Another pattern we continue to use is a Texas rig on the deep grass in 15 to 25 ft. Depending on wind conditions, we are using sinkers/weights ranging from 1/8 to 3/8 oz with 3/16 and 1/4 being the normal. Thehook size depends on what worm we are using as we select2/0 and 3/0 XPoint high carbon off-set hooks with Berkley Bottom Hoppers and Trick Worms and 3/0 and 4/0 with Berkley Power Worms (7 and 10 inch). Line choices for worm rigs are15 and 17 lb test Berkley 100% Pro
Grade Fluorocarbon, Veritas rod (73 medium heavy) and Revo MGX (Abu Garcia) baitcast. This is a great set-up that can land the biggest bass in the lake and it also is easy to use and surprisingly light weight. The reelweighs only 5.4 ounces. Drop shot patterns are atechnique we have used for the pastseveral months and September is one of my favorite months using this pattern. We are workingdrop shot rigs in depths from 16 to 30 ft. withseveral different set-ups from 6 to 10 lb test, 1/8 to 1/2 oz. sinkers, hooks ranging from #1 to 2/0 and soft plastics from 4.75 to 7 inches. I normally make a short-to-medium pitch from the boat, let it fall vertically andslowly bring it to the boat. Most strikes are light or your line justloads up and feels heavy with a slight movement. Carolina rigs and 1/2 & 3/4 oz. Stanley Bugeye football jigs are usedon points, humps and ridges in 18 to 30 ft.that are void of grass or have scattered grass. Deep diving crankbaits are working on suspended bass and we are using Bill Normans DD22s and their new NXS. I also have used the

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department issues about 2.1 million hunting and fishing licenses annually through the agencys 28 field offices, more than 58 state parks and at over 1,600 retailers across Texas. Licenses may also be purchased online through the TPWD Web site at www.tpwd.state.tx.us/buy or by phone (800-895-4248) with a $5 convenience fee required for each transaction, Call center hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday Friday. The online transaction system is available 24/7. A transaction receipt may be printed at the time of purchase for online and a confirmation number is provided for phone orders, and the physical license is mailed separately. Confirmation numbers will verify that a license has been purchased, which is sufficient for dove hunting, but will not allow hunters to take fish or wildlife that require a tag.
