Microsoft and Sony Consoles Coming Closer Together

Microsoft continues to backpedal on the vision of the Xbox One that was unveiled during the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo. As they backpedal, the differences between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 become smaller and smaller. First, Microsoft went back on its vision of electronic sharing, removing family sharing and digital-only versions of games (hard copies would be saved to the consoles storage). This was a direct response to vocal dissenters who rose up on the Internet and claimed the Xbox One was a symbol of greed and corporate interests over consumer desires. So, gamers lost a few potentially interesting features -- sharing games between friends and family -- but now the console doesnt have to check in online every 24 hours (only on initial setup) and hard copies of games can be traded between friends as usual. Now Microsoft is changing the way it handles independent developers, something that seems to be a response to Sonys PlayStation 4 campaign of Sony hearts devs. Sony pitched their indie game market as a self-publishing platform where small developers dont have to team up with large publishers just to get space on the market, a model that Microsoft has used up to this point. The Xbox Ones new position on independent games is similar. The Xbox Live Indie page previously on Xbox Live will now be fused with the Xbox Live Arcade into one big independent market page. All developers have to do is submit their game to Microsoft, get it quality control approved and the developer can set their release date and pricing. The big move Microsoft made with the switch to self-publishing for games is allowing each Xbox One console to be turned into a dev kit, which allows independent developers to test their games on the Xbox One before submitting it to for quality testing. PlayStation 4 dev kits will have to be purchased separately at the moment. PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One are almost philosophically identical. Both systems allow self-publishing for independent developers; there is no push for digital-only on the system and both systems require paying yearly subscription to play games online and all of the consoles features. Nothing these two systems are doing is pushing gaming into the future (and neither is the Wii U, but I rarely find that system in the conversation anymore). As the PC market rides the waves of kick-starter games and a growing independent scene, Microsoft and Sony are playing catchup by finally admitting they cant rule over smaller teams because those developers jump over to Steam and Good Old Games (GoG.com). This means gamers are going to have greater access across all platforms for independent developers and it means those developers will be courted heavily, which should be a win for both gamers and creators. The big-budget games, however, may be a different story. The games may look cooler, more refined and have greater online support, but those upgrades may come with a price. With incredibly similar systems, both Sony and Microsoft are going to be courting the bigger developers for exclusive deals. Gamers are going to find themselves more and more watching awesome trailers for upcoming games and lamenting the fact that it exists on the console they dont own.

Review: Rogue Legacy

(out of 5)
If you have $15 and a PC, Rogue Legacy is the game for you. Taking cues from Castlevania, this sidescrolling action game is a tough jaunt through a randomly generated castle that refreshes itself when you die. Oh, and death is permanent. When you die you must choose between three offspring of the hero who died. But the offspring have different traits and quirks such as vertigo (the castle is upside down) and obsessive compulsive disorder (breaking objects replenishes magic). The goal is the game is to use the offspring to collect gold, which is used to purchase upgrades, equipment and new classes. So each play-through means the heroes offspring get just a bit stronger, and the goal is to defeat the five different bosses. You will die. A lot. The first batch of heroes is weak, taking only a couple of hits before dying. But as things go forward, enemies will go down in last attacks, your heroes will take more damage and new classes and upgrades will grant access to special abilities and magic attacks that make it easier to bring down each boss. The game can feel too hard at times, and some layouts of the castle are unfair, especially if the class you select cant handle some of the opening rooms. But overall, the game is a steal at $15 and should be required gaming if you have a PC.

Music Mel Guapo

Oklahoma, Behind the Music

Person of Interest: Joshua Rehanek
It was an electric neon night in December with wet pavements and light reflections, if my memory serves me correctly, and I found myself at The Deli amidst a crowd of familiars and unfamiliars alike asking feverishly what all the fuss was about. I found a full beer on the bar and turned to Ricky Carly, a trusted source. ADDverse Effects was the name on the crowds lips. Allegedly, this was their second show, but three songs in the whole bar were singing along to the hooks, fists full of beer in the air, bouncing to the groove. It was hip-hop with a live band, guitar loops and a tight rhythm section. The front man looked punk. More importantly they sounded like theyd been playing for years and their following looked like theyd been following for years. Since that fast December night, ADDverse Effects has been all over the Norman music scene from NMF6 to the Blackwatch Studios Summer Series and routinely packing out venues like Opolis and The Deli. I recently interviewed Oklahoma native and front man for the group, Joshua Rehanek, about music as art and the philosophy behind the band. Why does music matter? There are so many reasons music matters. To me, music matters because it gives me both something to relate to and a voice. Music is my passion. I encourage everyone to find what theyre truly passionate about and pursue it, even if its just a hobby. What is the philosophy behind ADDverse Effects? ADDverse Effects is meant to spread positivity and bring integrity back to hip-hop. Theres so much negativity in our genre (violence, classism, materialism, ignorance, misogyny, etc). Were just trying to quell the negative connotation that has latched onto hip-hop and bring the artistry back to the craft. What experience and/or values--in general or specifically--do you bring to your music that makes you important and/or legitimate as an artist? Interpret that question however you like. Honestly, all my writing comes from personal experiences in my life: family, friends, college, parties, love, heartbreak, financial burdens, mind expansion, s----- jobs, books, movies, social issues my music comes from whatevers on my mind when the pens in hand. Nothing is off limits. Would you rather be loud or understood? Understood. I hate it when I go to a show and I cant hear what the artist is saying. Im trying to get my message across as clearly as possible; thats the only way to get people to relate to the music.

Whats more important: rhythm or a hook? Equal. Ive had books of lyrics written for awhile but they meant nothing without music to put them to. In the same way Boyd had a ton of instrumentals hes been sitting on for a long time, but he needed an MC to be complete tracks. Separately you have two great pieces of work, but together you have ADDverse Effects, ya dig. What do you think of poetry? True art. PUT POETRY BACK IN THE OLYMPICS! I was writing poetry before I ever started out as an MC. I think that helped me out tremendously. Some of my favorite MCs also write poetry Common, Mos Def, Saul Williams those guys understand the true art of being an MC. I respect that. I also get down with Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Maya Angelou and, locally, Lauren Zuniga and Mason Parker. How do you feel about politics? And how does that feeling relate, if at all, to your music? [Expletive] POLITICS! In your opinion, what is important in life? Family, friends and doing what you love. Do you consider yourself foremost an artist or an entertainer? Being an entertainer has always come naturally to me but becoming an artist took a lot of persistence and hard work. Of course Im an entertainer but Im incredibly proud to have earned the right to call myself a true artist. What attracts you to music? Everything. Music is my life. It has been since I was young and it will continue to be long after my body is gone from the earth. Upcoming shows The Opolis Friday, August 30, 2013 ADDverse Effects 8 PM - 2 AM | $8 21 and up

Plans for Your Mid-Summer:

Normans Midsummer Nights Fair has art to suit all tastes.
Arts fairs always have plenty to showcase, but if youre searching for one with a more intimate feel, then Normans Midsummer Nights Fair is a go! Hosted by the Firehouse Arts Center, the fair begins at 6 PM and goes until 11 PM, at least. Thats how long the vendors are required to be out there, but it has been known to stretch into midnight and beyond. In the field with the famous giant head statue, attendees can peruse the art stands arranged in a town-square formation. Food vendors will also be providing refreshments carnival favorites and more. This year our very own Mark Doescher is one of the 30 art vendors for the first time, and he said hes excited and nervous. Hell be displaying his photographic artwork from his trips abroad. Theres a tie-dye vendor run by this lady who does stuff Ive never seen before: fading black tie-dye shirts that change slightly each time theyre washed, fulllength dresses and stuff like that, says Doescher. He added that purchases range from a couple bucks to nearly $1000. I suspect probably even more. Even still, there are a wide variety of art forms from the aforementioned tie-dye shirts to photography to sculptures and woodworking. There is no cost to enter but those who come will find that the Midsummer Nights Fair has something for everyone. According to the Norman Firehouse Art Center website, The fair is a great opportunity to speak with artists and purchase original works of art priced for every budget, from student to collector. Because the fair is smaller and primarily comprised of local Norman artists, theres a more interactive atmosphere. Local bands provide background music as attendees buy food, witness demonstration art (think glassblowing) and can purchase custom-made marbles. Thats right, customers can pick a marble color and swirl colors to design it the way they want. For younger attendees there is a kids area where they can paint and make their own creations. Outstanding works of art will shine when the jury of judges chooses winners in 2D and 3D categories. Aside from that, this bazaar-like fair is all about meeting with artists, showcasing local talents visually and aurally and getting attendees involved in art. Doescher believes this year will be huge considering the fair coincides with the start of school. Be sure to come early; parking fills fast!

Bite Your Tongue

You ever call your best friend a moron over a burger? How about telling your mother at a dinner party how utterly gear-grinding you find her opinion? To be fair, at some point in our lives weve all jabbed a loved one below the belt in front of other people. Youve not only been that person, but no doubt youve been witness to someone else bleeding their partner to death with paper cuts while the surrounding audience cringes in awkwardness. Ive seen this happen so many times Im starting to wonder if this is the new MO for couples. Most adults practice self-control on a daily basis. Its necessary in order to be accepted, liked, loved and to function successfully in society. In saying that, we dont ride unicorns to work, speak in rainbows and live by the code of Care Bears. Irritation with your partner is inevitable, and any day of the week I would rather be angry than pretend that Im not. The point here is that there is an appropriate time and place to show that anger. Scenario time: Ladies, you and your man have been fighting but you already have plans with friends that you just cant break. A silent car ride and a few drinks later, youre lubed up enough to get a little cocky. It might be the look on his face or the tone in his voice, but something happens and you decide he sucks and everyone needs to know. This is a double whammy of bad behavior because it not only makes YOU look bad, but it also slides the needle off the record. Who wants to listen to your supposed to be private fight mid-dinner? Nobody. You shining a spotlight on your partners stupid remark, bad haircut or lack of attention he pays to you at home impresses no one. Want to finish him off Mortal-Kombat style? Go home! Otherwise youre only proving one thing: Youre the dominant rhymes with witch who thinks its cool to cut your mans virility off. Everyone else is just happy THEY dont have to go home with you. To make a relationship a lasting one, you must learn to be tolerant and careful with your words. Those small hits on your partner add up over time, especially when you sandwich them with public humiliation. I once read words are nails going into a fence. If you regret one, you can pull it out, but the hole remains. Being verbally cutting and condescending to your partner without doubt is detrimental to your relationship. Keep doing it. Theyll leave you sooner or later - usually the minute someone else is nice to them. The big picture is the person youre hating in the moment is also the person youve been loving for a much longer amount of time. Show some respect. Swallow your irritation while out and settle things in private. Dont say things you cant take back. Then, when the dust settles, you can get creative on how to make up. Thats the whole reason love quarrels were invented.
