Mr. Rex W. Tillerson ExxonMobil Corporation 5959 Las Colinas Blvd. Irving, TX 75039 Re: As Autumn Approaches -- Innovative Industrial Initiative vs. Impasse Dear Mr. Tillerson, This is my second letter of five As Autumn Approaches. Autumn foreshadows death and dormant darkness. The growing darkness of Autumn nights is symbolic of humanitys end game as we struggle to end the unfettered release of carbon dioxide which is taking us on a path to destruction. Our governments are unable to deal effectively with solving the problem. We are at an impasse due to paralysis by analysis and opposing ideologies. There is simply too much at stake for the impasse to continue. Few mediocre solutions using regulatory procedures would be too little too late if what the scientists foresee turns out to be true. Run-away global warming will affect those who believe the scientists, as well as deniers and skeptics, alike.

We need effective action to be taken quickly.

You recently stated that you believe we will adapt to increased regional droughts and less water.

You recently responded to Rev. Michael Crosby at the Annual Shareholder Meeting, how do you want to deal with that great social challenge to what good is it to save the planet if humanity suffers in the process of those efforts when you dont know exactly what your impacts are going to be, so we have taken a much more balanced view and we said lets manage the things. What if climate and ocean effects from continued unfettered burning of oil, gas and coal turn out to be horrific -- worst case? What if we cannot adapt -- let alone quickly?

I will continue to remind you about your speech at the Boy Scouts of America Annual Meeting in May (video http://bit.ly/rex-main-thing). Imagine yourself the captain of a ship of state leading a change of course toward a world of lifepreserving carbon-free energy.

You and the ExxonMobil Board can do something extraordinary to cover all of our bases, by simply resolving to take initiative with innovative leadership and management to avert the down-side risks of being wrong on the premises above. If the worst case is that humanity would perish -- that outcome is unacceptable -- there are a few alternatives, including ExxonMobil taking the bull by the horns and deciding to shift all new investments in capital projects exclusively to renewables -- gradually phasing out fossil fuels while managing the transition in a financially sound and responsible fashion.
