Experiment 7.6 : Investigating the level of pollution in several different sources of water Problem statement : Does different water sample have take different time to decolourise methylene blue solution? Aim : To investigate the level of pollution in several different sources of water : Drain water take longer time for the methylene blue solution to decolourise compare to other water sources. : Manipulated variable : Drain water, pond water, pipe water Responding variable : Time taken for 1 ml methylene blue solution decolourise Constant variable : Volume of sources of water Concentration of methylene blue solution : Methylene blue solution, water samples, reagent bottles (250ml) with stopper, beakers, syringes and a stopwatch.

Hypothesis Variables

Materials and Apparatus Technique Procedure

: Measure and record the time taken for the methylene blue solution in all the samples of water to decolourise with stopwatch :

1. Water samples are collected from three different water sources. 2. The reagent bottles are labelled P, Q and R. 3. The reagent bottles are filled with 250ml of the following water samples. P : Pipe water Q : Drain water R : Pond water 4. If the water samples you are not tested immediately, the reagent bottles should be wrapped in aluminium foil or black paper to shield the samples from light. 5. The tests for all the water samples are run on the same day. 6. A syringe is used to add 1ml of methylene blue solution to the base of each of the water samples.

7. The reagent bottles are closed quickly. The content of the bottles cannot be shaken. 8. All the bottles are placed inside a dark cupboard and the stopwatch is activated.

9. The bottles are examined from time to time. 10. The time taken for the methylene blue solution in all the samples of water to decolourise is recorded. 11. The results are recorded in a table.

Discussion

Time taken for the methylene blue solution in pipe water to decolourise is the longest because it is more clean and least contaminated. Whereas, time taken for the methylene blue solution in drain water to decolourise is the shortest because it is too contaminated. Time taken for the methylene blue solution in pond water to decolourise is longer than drain water, but shorter than pipe water because it is not too contaminated compared to drain water. Conclusion :

Drain water take shorter time for the methylene blue solution to decolourise compare to other water sources. Hypothesis is rejected.
