he animal is a topic of significant import for posthumanities. This course will look at certain writers regarding the animal, animal rights, and the industry of the animal.

In order to establish some boundaries for this type of seminar, we will look at what are the constraints of and for animals and human exceptionalism. We will examine through theoretical and literary readings the topics of human and animal, queer and posthumanities, exceptionalism and politics in order to get some sort of handle on this thing called the animal.

Absences Any absence from class affects your final grade. Seminar Presentations Each of you must make a research presentation based on your final paper on 8 December 2009. The presentation is approximately ten minutes (like a conference paper) followed by comments and discussion. Seminar Participation You will have responsibility for discussion. The presentations will be related to the readings of the day or will take up a topic encom-passing the readings over several weeks. Remember, this is your time to work with each other on topics of mutual interest. Evaluations will be based on evidence, argument, and interest/import. Fifteen-Page Paper Each of you will have to present a 4500-word paper by 9 December 2009 on a topic approved for this class.
