thelifeoftheAustralianChurch.

The formal Social Teaching of the Church dates to

1891 when Pope Leo XIII issued his encyclical Rerum
Novarum,OntheCondionofLabour,andhasfurther
developed in the intervening years with addional
encyclicals, and the statements of various Bishops
Conferencesaroundtheworld.

AlthoughthemoreformalisedbodyofSocialTeaching
hasarelavelyshorthistoryinthelifeoftheChurch
only some 122 years!the origins of that Social
TeachinggoesbacktotheearlylifeoftheChurch,and
indeed even to the Scriptures themselves, both Old
and New Testaments. It is not, as is somemes
suggested,amodernistaddiontotheChrisanFaith
asunderstoodbytheChurch.

Oen captured by the term social jusce, the

praccal living out of the Social Teaching of the
Church is the natural response to living a life in
relaonship with Jesus Christ, which itself is at the
heart of Chrisan faith. We cannot escape the Social
Teaching of the Church, nor the seeking of social
jusce,evenifwewantedto!

Wedo,however,needtobeclearaboutwhatweare
called to do in seeking social jusce. It is not simply
aboutensuringweundertakeactsofcharity,although
this is indeed part of it. Along with acts of charity
howeveristhecallforChrisans,bothindividuallyand
corporately, to idenfy and seek to remove those
thingsthatcreateinjusce.Theseactsofadvocacyare
as,ifnotmore,importantthantheactsofcharitythat
arenaturallyprovokedinanyreasonablehumanbeing
whenfacedwithinjusce.

Sowhatdoesthismeanforus?

Well, at the very least, the Social Teaching of the

Church should snap us out of our complacency, a
complacencythatcancomesimplybecausewelivein
the lucky country. We need always, however, to
rememberthatjustbecausewearenotthevicmsof
injusce it doesnt follow that injusce isnt part of
thelivesofourworldandthelivesofourbrothersand
sisters.

I would encourage you to read this years Social

So that we might receive Communion in a t and

When we process forward to receive Communion,

we have been asked by the Australian Bishops to
adopt a common and unied gesture of reverence
before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow
of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other
