Interconnecting NI 5670/5671 Modules

This section describes how to handle the cables used with the NI 5610 and the NI 5421/5441 and
how to interconnect the NI 5670/5671 modules.
Note Published NI 5670/5671 RF vector signal generator specifications assume use
of the included cables. Substituting different cables may affect performance.

Cable Connection Guidelines

Observe the following guidelines to ensure proper installation and use of SMA cables:

Connect the cable center pin on the SMA cable to the SMA connector on the
appropriate device.
Note Ensure that the SMA cable center pins properly align with the SMA connector
to avoid bending the cable pin or damaging the front panel connector on the device.
If the SMA cable does not exactly align with the SMA connector, bend the cable
slightly by hand to align the cable and the connector. The amount of bending should
be minimal. Do not excessively bend the cables as they can be damaged by excessive
bending.

Tighten the SMA cable end on the SMA connector by hand after the cable center pins are
correctly aligned and connected. The cable connectors should tighten without much torque
or effort. If a cable bends due to incorrect alignment, remove the cable from the front panel
connector and repeat step 1 before continuing with this step.

Use a 1 N m torque wrench or torque screwdriver (not included) to complete the tightening
of the SMA cable to 1 N m. Use the torque wrench no more than one revolution to tighten
the SMA cable before reaching maximum torque.
Note The device shipping kit does not include a torque wrench or torque
screwdriver. Visit ni.com/products for information about ordering accessories.

Interconnecting NI 5672 Modules

This section describes how to handle the cables used with the NI 5610 and the NI 5442 and how
to interconnect the NI 5672 modules.
Note

Published NI 5672 RF vector signal generator specifications assume use of the

included cables.

Connecting the Modules

Complete the following steps to interconnect the RF vector signal generator hardware module
front panel connectors, as shown in Figure 4-4.

Cooling Considerations
When installing the hardware, refer to the guidelines in the Maintain Forced-Air Cooling Note
to Users included with the NI RF vector signal generator to ensure that the device can cool itself
effectively.
Caution

Inadequate air circulation could cause the temperature inside the chassis to
rise above the optimal operating temperature for the NI RF vector signal generator,
potentially causing thermal shutdown, shorter lifespans, or improper performance.

Under proper air flow conditions, 25 C (77 F) ambient temperatures, and device use in an
18-slot chassis, the NI 5610 RF upconverter module operates at internal temperatures of
approximately 47 C (113 F), and the NI 5442 module at approximately 37 C (99 F).
Hot Surface If the NI RF vector signal generator has been in use, it may exceed safe
handling temperatures and cause burns. Allow the NI RF vector signal generator to
cool before removing it from the PXI Express chassis.
Tip NI recommends that you install PXI/PXI Express slot blockers between the NI RF
vector signal generator and adjacent hardware modules to maximize cooling air flow.

Under proper air flow conditions, 25 C (77 F) ambient temperatures, and device use in an
18-slot chassis, the NI 5611 I/Q modulator module operates at internal temperatures of
approximately 32 C (90 F), the NI 5450/5451 module at approximately 43 C (110 F), and the
NI 5650/5651/5652 module at approximately 37 C (99 F).

Programming the NI RF Signal

Generator

You can generate signals with the NI RF signal generator using the NI-RFSG instrument driver.
You also can run the NI-RFSG examples to demonstrate the functionality of the NI RF signal
generator.

NI-RFSG Instrument Driver

The NI-RFSG driver configures and operates the NI RF signal generator hardware, performs
waveform programming and generation, and performs basic modulation tasks using LabVIEW
VIs or LabWindows/CVI functions. With the NI 5670/5671/5672 RF vector signal generators,
the NI-RFSG instrument driver operates the NI 5610 RF upconverter module and the
NI 5421/5441/5442 AWG module as a single instrument. In the case of the NI 5673/5673E RF
vector signal generator, the NI-RFSG instrument driver operates the NI 5611 I/Q modulator
module, the NI 5450/5451 AWG module, and the NI 5650/5651/5652 LO source module as a
single instrument.
Optional add-on software available from NI, including the Modulation Toolkit and the
Spectral Measurements Toolkit, extends the capability of NI RF signal generators to include
additional modulation-domain and frequency-domain tasks.

NI-RFSG Examples
Examples demonstrate the functionality of the device, serving as programming models and
building blocks for your own applications. The NI Example Finder is a utility available for some
software applications that organizes examples into categories and allows you to easily browse
and search installed examples. You can see descriptions and compatible hardware models for
each example or see all the examples compatible with one particular hardware model.

a problem may exist with the PXI/PXI Express power rails, a hardware module, or the LED.
Note

The LEDs may not light until the device has been configured in MAX. Before
proceeding, verify that the NI RF signal generator module(s) appear in MAX.

Troubleshoot this issue by completing the following steps:

1.

Power off the PXI/PXI Express chassis.

2.

Disconnect any signals from the PXI/PXI Express module front panels.

3.

Remove any module front panel connections from the NI RF signal generator hardware
module(s).

4.

Remove the NI RF signal generator hardware and inspect for damage. Do not reinstall a
damaged device.

5.

Reinstall the NI RF signal generator in different PXI/PXI Express slot(s).

6.

Power on the PXI/PXI Express chassis.

7.

Verify that the NI RF signal generator module(s) appear in MAX.

8.

Reset the NI RF signal generator module(s) in MAX and perform a self-test. Refer to the
chapter for your device for information about performing device resets and self-tests in
MAX.

9.

If either ACCESS LED still fails to illuminate and failures continue, contact NI technical
support or visit ni.com/support.

A Hardware Module Does Not Appear in MAX

If an NI RF signal generator hardware module does not appear in MAX, complete the following
steps:
1.

In the MAX Configuration pane, click Devices and Interfaces.

2.

Expand the Chassis tree to see the list of installed devices, and press <F5> to refresh the
list.

Troubleshooting

3.

If the module is still not listed, power off the system, ensure that all NI RF signal generator
hardware is correctly installed, and restart the system.

4.

Select StartControl Panel and navigate to the Device Manager.

(Windows XP) Select SystemHardwareDevice Manager.

(Windows Vista) Select System and MaintenanceDevice Manager.

(Windows 7) Select Device Manager.

5.

If you are using a PXI controller, verify that a National Instruments entry appears in the
system device list. Reinstall NI-RFSG and the NI RF signal generator hardware modules if
error conditions appear in the list. If you are using a MXI controller, right-click
PCI-to-PCI Bridge, and select Configure from the shortcut menu to verify that the bridge
is enabled.

6.

If either module still fails to appear in MAX, contact NI technical support or visit ni.com/
support.

A Module Fails the Self-Test

The MAX self-test performs a brief test of device resources. If an NI RF signal generator
hardware module does not pass the self-test, complete the following steps:
1.

Restart the system.

2.

Launch MAX, and perform the self-test again.

3.

Reinstall the failed module in a different PXI/PXI Express slot as described in the device
chapter.

4.

Perform the self-test again.

5.

If the module still fails the self-test, contact NI technical support, or visit ni.com/
support.

Thermal Shutdown Error

The thermal shutdown error appears when device temperatures exceed safe limits. The NI RF
signal generator shuts down until temperatures fall to acceptable levels and you reset the device
in MAX.
To re-enable the NI RF signal generator after thermal shutdown, complete the following steps:
1.

Power down the chassis that contains the device.

2.

Review the procedure in the Cooling Considerations section of the chapter appropriate to
your device and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that the device is effectively
cooled.

3.

Perform a device reset in MAX, or call the niRFSG Reset Device VI or the
niRFSG_ResetDevice function. The thermal shutdown error continues to be reported
until the device has been successfully reset.

Note To perform a device reset in MAX, right-click on the device name in the
chassis tree, and select Reset Device.

Performance Issues Using A MXI Connection

When using a MXI-3 connection to control the PXI chassis, you must run the MXI Optimization
Application prior to using the NI RF signal generator. By default, this application runs
automatically when Windows starts. Using a MXI connection without running this application
may result in a time exceeded or internal software error, an initialization timeout,
or performance issue when using an NI RF signal generator.
For MXI-3 optimization, select StartAll ProgramsNational Instruments MXI-3
MXI-3 Optimization. MXI-4 optimization is performed automatically by the MXI-4 hardware.
If the MXI software is not installed, refer to the setup instructions included with the MXI kit to
install the software from the MXI software media or the National Instruments Driver DVD.
After installation, you may be required to restart the computer before using the MXI application.
If you continue to have initialization or performance issues, refer to the MXI documentation
included in your MXI kit, or visit NI Technical Support at ni.com/support.

The NI 5673 Seems to Generate Before Trigger

Appears or After Generation Stops
The NI 5673 may seem to generate before a trigger appears or after signal generation stops. This
issue is likely due to finite carrier suppression of the NI 5673. NI 5673 carrier suppression is
calibrated and is specified in the NI PXIe-5673 Specifications as approximately less than
65 dBc. When the NI 5450 is stopped, no modulation is present, and the carrier appears at the
center frequency at a power level equal to the calibrated carrier suppression. For information
about correcting this artifact, refer to the NI RF Signal Generators Help.
